24CHECKING BRAKE PEDAL CLEARANCE
G180A01A-GAT You need a helper to check the brake pedal clearance. With the engine run- ning, have your helper press down onthe brake pedal several times and then hold it down with a force of about 490N (50 kg, 110 lbs). The brakepedal clearance is the distance from the top surface of the brake pedal to the asphalt sheeting under the floormat. If the brake pedal clearance is not within the limits specified in the illustration, have it inspected by yourHyundai dealer and adjusted or re- paired if necessary. 45.1 mm (1.78 in.)

CHECKING DRIVE BELTS
Drive belts should be checked peri-
odically for proper tension and ad- justed if necessary. At the same time, belts should be examined for cracks, wear, fraying or other evidence of deterioration and replaced if neces-sary.
Belt routing should also be checked
to be sure there is no interference between the belts and other parts of the engine. After a belt is replaced, the new belt should be adjusted again after two or three weeks to eliminate slack resulting from initial stretchingafter use.

CHECKING THE BATTERY
G210A01A-AAT
WARNING:
Batteries can be dangerous! When working with batteries, carefullyobserve the following precautions to avoid serious injuries. The fluid in the battery contains a
strong solution of sulfuric acid, which is poisonous and highly corrosive. Be careful not to spill it on yourself or thecar. If you do spill battery fluid on yourself, immediately do the follow- ing: o If battery fluid is on your skin, flush
the affected areas with water for atleast 15 minutes and then seek medical assistance.
o If battery fluid is in your eyes, rinse out your eyes with water and getmedical assistance as soon as possible. While you are being drivento get medical assistance, continue to rinse your eyes by using a sponge or soft cloth saturated withwater.
o If you swallow battery fluid, drink a large quantity of water or milk fol- lowed by milk of magnesia, eat a raw egg or drink vegetable oil. Getmedical assistance as soon as possible.
While batteries are being charged
(either by a battery charger or by the vehicle's alternator), they produce explosive gases. Always observe these warnings to prevent injuries fromoccurring:
o Charge batteries only in a well ven- tilated area.
o Do not permit flames, sparks or
smoking in the area.
o Keep children away from the area.

Checking the Battery
Keep the battery clean. Any evidence
of corrosion around the battery posts or terminals should be removed using a solution of household baking sodaand warm water. After the battery terminals are dry, cover them with a light coating of grease.
WARNING:Always read the followinginstructions carefullywhen handling a battery.Keep lighted cigarettesand all other flames orsparks away from the bat- tery. Hydrogen, which is a highly combustible gas, is always present in batterycells and may explode if ignited.

CHARGING SYSTEM WARNING LAMP
The charging system warning lamp should illuminate when the ignitionswitch is turned to the "ON" position and should be extinguished when the engine is started. If the lamp fails toilluminate when the ignition is turned "ON" or fails to extinguish after starting the engine, the nearest Hyundai dealershould be contacted. If the lamp illumi- nates whilst the vehicle is being driven, stop the vehicle as soon as it is safe todo so and check the condition of the alternator drive belt. If the belt is in place and the tension is satisfactory, the advice of a Hyundai authorised repairer should be sought.
CAUTION:
If the drive belt (generator belt) is loose, broken, or missing while thevehicle is driving, there may be a serious malfunction, engine could overheat because this belt alsodrives the water pump.
SB210P1-E LOW FUEL LEVEL WARNING LAMP
The low fuel warning lamp serves to warn the driver that the remaining fuelquantity is approximately 9 litres and that the vehicle should be refuelled. If the vehicle is driven for an extendedperiod with the low fuel warning lamp illuminated there exists a possibility that misfiring due to fuel shortage mayoccur. This situation must be avoided to prevent damage to the catalyst oc- curring.

DOOR OPEN (AJAR) WARNING LAMP
The door ajar warning lamp indicates that a door is not correctly closed.Ensure that the lamp is extinguished prior to driving the vehicle.
B260B01JM-EATSRS (Airbag) Service Re- minder Indicator (SRI)(Not all models)
The SRS service reminder indicator (SRI) comes on for aproximately 6 seconds after key is turned to the "ON"position or after the engine is started, after which it will go out. This light also comes on when the SRS is not working properly. If the SRI does not come on, or continuously remainson after operating for about 6 seconds when you turned the ignition key to the "ON" position or started the engine, orif it comes on while driving, have the SRS inspected by a Hyundai authorised repairer.
SB210N2-E HATCHBACK DOOR OPEN WARNING LAMP
The hatchback door warning lamp in- dicates when the hatchback door isopen or is not fully closed. Ensure that the lamp has extinguished prior to driving the vehicle.

DRIVING YOUR HYUNDAI

SC170A1-E The onset of winter conditions subject motor vehicles to greater operating demands. Therefore, the following suggestions will assist in maintainingpeak performance and reliability dur- ing these periods: WINTER MOTORING
ZC170B1-E Electrical System Winter conditions impose severe de- mands upon vehicle electrical systems, particularly the charging circuit. The battery condition and performance along with the alternator performanceand drive belt condition should be checked prior to the onset of winter.SC160A1-F Avoid braking or gear changing in cor- ners, especially when roads are wet. Ideally, corners should always be taken under gentle acceleration. If you followthese suggestions, tire wear will be held to a minimum.SMOOTH CORNERING
ZC170C1-E Anti-freeze/Corrosion inhibitor The cooling system must always con- tain an Ethylene-Glycol based anti- freeze solution. The system is filledduring manufacture with solution of the correct strength which should be checked before the onset of winter andadjusted or changed as required. NOTE: The anti-freeze solution contains a corrosion inhibitor to prevent deg-radation of the aluminum castings contained within the engine. There- fore, never, drain the system andrefill with water only.

CHECKING ENGINE DRIVE BELTS
If a belt is loose, adjust it by:
1. Loosen the adusting bolts just enough so that the components can be moved.
2. Whilst pulling outward on the pry bar or screw driver, test the beltdeflection with your thumb.
3. After tightening the adjusting bolts,
be sure to recheck the belt tension.Overtightening drive belts can cause excessive wear and failure in driven components and belts.
