The catalytic converter is part of the exhaust emission control system. Its purpose is to remove certain engine emission products from the engine'sexhaust. It looks something like a muffler and is located underneath the car in the exhaust system.

About the Catalytic Converter
Exhaust gases passing through the
catalytic converter cause it to operate at very high temperatures. As a re- sult, the introduction of large amountsof unburned gasoline may cause it to overheat and create a fire hazard. This can be avoided by observing thefollowing:
o Use unleaded fuel only.
o Maintain your engine in good con-
dition. Extremely high converter temperatures can result from im- proper operation of the electrical,ignition or fuel injection systems.
H020D01S-GAT CATALYTIC CONVERTER ; For a diesel engine Hyundai vehicle is equipped with oxi- dation type catalytic converter to re-duce the carbon monoxide, hydrocar- bons and particulate contained in the exhaust gas.
o If your engine stalls, pings, knocks,
or is hard to start, take your car toyour Hyundai dealer as soon aspossible and have the difficulty cor- rected.
o Avoid driving with a very low fuel level. If your run out of gasoline, it could cause the engine to misfireand result in excessive loading of the catalytic converter.
o Avoid idling the engine for periods longer than 10 minutes.
o Your Hyundai should not be either pushed or pulled to get it started.This can cause the catalytic con- verter to overload.
o Take care not to stop your Hyundai over any combustible material suchas grass, paper, leaves or rags. Asthese materials could come in con- tact with the catalytic converter and could cause a fire.
o Do not touch the catalytic con-
verter or any other part of the ex-haust system while the engine is running as it is very hot and could result in burns.
o Remember that your Hyundai dealer is your best source of assis-tance.

C020A03O-EAT BEFORE STARTING THE EN- GINE Before you start the engine, you should always:
1. Look around the vehicle to be sure
there are no flat tyres, puddles of oil or water or other indications of pos-sible trouble.
2. After entering the car, check to be
sure the parking brake is engaged.
3. Check that all windows, and lights are clean.
4. Check that the interior and exterior mirrors are clean and in position.
5. Check your seat, seatback and
headrestraint to be sure they are intheir proper positions.
6. Close all the doors.
7. Fasten your seat belt and be sure
that all other occupants have fas- tened theirs.
8. Turn off all lights and accessories that are not needed.
9. When you turn the ignition switch to
"ON" check that all appropriate warn- ing lights are operating and that you have sufficient fuel.
10.Check the operation of warning lights and all bulbs when key is in the "ON"position. WARNING: (DIESEL ENGINE)
To ensure that sufficient vacuum exists within the brake system dur-ing cold weather start-up conditions, it is necessary to run the engine at idle for several seconds after start-ing the engine. SC040A1-F COMBINATION IGNITION SWITCH AND STEERING LOCKTo Start the Engine
o If your Hyundai is equipped with a
manual transaxle, place the shift lever in neutral and depress theclutch pedal fully.
o If your Hyundai has an automatic
transaxle, place the shift lever in "P"(park).
o To start the engine, insert the igni-
tion key and turn it to the "START"position. Release it as soon as the engine starts. Do not hold the key in the "START" position for more than15 seconds.
NOTE: For safety, the engine will not start if the shift lever is not in "P" or "N"Position (automatic transaxle).
!WARNING:
Always wear appropriate shoes when operating your vehicle. Unsuitable shoes (high heels, ski boots, etc.) may interfere with yourability to use the brake and accelera- tor pedal, and the clutch (if installed).
!WARNING:
When you intend to park or stop the vehicle with the engine on, be care- ful not to depress the acceleratorpedal for a long period of time. It may overheat the engine or exhaust sys- tem and cause fire.

C055B01B-GAT STARTING AND STOPPING THE ENGINE FOR TURBO CHARGERINTERCOOLER (DIESEL EN-GINE)
(1) Do not race the engine or sudden
accelerate the engine immediately after start it. If the engine is cold, allow the engine to idle for severalseconds before it is driven to en- sure sufficient lubrication of the turbo charger unit.
(2) After high speed or extended driv- ing, requiring a heavy engine load,the engine should be allowed to idleabout 1 minute before turning it off. This idle time will allow the turbo charger to cool prior to shutting theengine off.
WARNING:
Do not turn the engine off immedi- ately after it has been subjected to a heavy load. Doing so may causesevere damage to the engine or turbo charger unit.
WARNING:
Be sure that the clutch is fully de- pressed when starting a manualtransaxle vehicle. Otherwise there is the potential to cause damage to the vehicle or injury to someoneinside or outside the vehicle as a result of the forward or backward movement of the vehicle that willoccur if the clutch is not depressed when the vehicle is started. SC060B1-E FUEL ECONOMY The following suggestions are made to assist in achieving the greatest degreeof fuel economy.
o Maintaining a constant check on
fuel consumption will enable the most economical use pattern and driving style to be adopted.
o Avoid using the vehicle for very short journeys if possible, particu-larly when a cold start is involved.
o Ensure that tyre pressures are main- tained at the correct level.
o Use only the recommended grade of fuel.
o Avoid carrying unnecessary weight,
and if a roof rack is in use, removeit as soon as possible after use.
o Anticipate the road and conditions
ahead to enable adjustments in speedto be made smoothly. Avoid heavy acceleration and sharp braking.
o Avoid cruising at unnecessary high speeds.
o Always ensure that the periodic main-
tenance services are performed by a Hyundai authorised repairer at the time and/or mileage intervals specified.
o Use the air conditioning only when necessary.
5. Turn the ignition key to the "Start"
position and release it when the engine starts.

o Do not attempt to engage reverse gear when the car is in motion.
o To avoid damaging the selector mechanism, do not use the gear shift lever as a hand rest. Releasethe lever immediately the shift is completed.
o To avoid premature clutch wear, do not use the clutch pedal as a footrest, and do not hold the vehicle on a gradient using the clutch.
o Ensure that the engine is not over- revved by upshifting before thetachometer needle enters the redzone.
o Do not coast with the shift lever
at the neutral position.
o When descending long gradi- ents, make use of the engine brak-ing to assist the footbrake toavoid brake fade or over-heating.
o When slippery conditions are en-
countered, increased cautionshould be exercised when gear changing, braking or accelerat- ing. Abrupt changes in speed maycause a loss of traction or control of the vehicle.
C070A02TB-EAT MANUAL TRANSAXLE The five speed fully synchronized transaxle is controlled by a floor mounted shift lever upon which the shift pattern is indicated. It is importantthat when changing gear, the clutch pedal is fully depressed to avoid transaxle damage. When shifting into reverse gear, pull the mis-shift prevention tab and shift intoreverse gear position. (Type B: Diesel type)
o During cold weather, shifting may
be difficult until the transaxle lu-bricant has warmed up. This is normal and not harmful to thetransaxle.
o If you 've come to a complete
stop and it's hard to shift into 1stor R(Reverse), put the shift lever in N(Neutral) position and release the clutch. Press the clutch pedalback down, and then shift into 1st or R(Reverse) gear position.
o Do not use the shift lever as a handrest during driving, as thiscan result in premature wear of the transaxle shift forks.

!WARNING:
If your vehicle has a manual transaxle not equipped with a ignition lock switch, it may move and cause aserious accident when starting the engine without depressing the clutch pedal while the parking brake is re-leased and the shift never not in the N(Neutral) position.

YC090A1-E SELECTOR POSITIONS o P (Park): With the selector in this position, no drive is transmitted from the engine and the transaxle output and thereforethe front wheels locked. The engine may be started with the selector in this position.

CAUTION:
The selector must NEVER be shifted to the "P" position whilst the ve-hicle is in motion, otherwise seri- ous transaxle damage will result. DC110C1-E o R (Reverse): With the selector in this position, re- verse gear will be engaged. The en-gine may not be started with the selec- tor in this position.
CAUTION:
The selector must NEVER be shifted to the "R" position whilst the ve- hicle is in motion.
! DC110D1-E o N (Neutral): With the selector in this position, no gear is selected and no drive is trans-mitted from the engine. The engine may be started with the selector in this position.
!
CAUTION:
Do not coast with the selector at the "N" position. DC110E2-E o D (Drive): Bring the car to a complete stop before shifting the selector lever to "D" posi-tion. With the selector in this position, first gear will be engaged from rest and thetransmission will automatically upshift to second, third and fourth depending upon the vehicle speed, throttle posi-tion and the position of the overdrive switch. The engine may not be started with the selector in this position. DC110F1-E o 2 (Second Gear): With the selector in this position, first gear will be engaged from rest. Thetransmission will upshift to second gear depending upon the vehicle speed and throttle position. No upshift to third orfourth will occur. The engine may not be started with the selector in this position. DC110G2-E o L (Low Gear): With the selector in this position, first gear will be engaged from rest. No upshift will occur regardless of vehiclespeed and throttle opening. The en- gine may not be started with the selec- tor in this position.

CAUTION:
Do not move the selector to the "L" position when the vehicle speed is in excess of 50 m.p.h.

o The brake pedal should be de-
pressed when shifting from NEU- TRAL to a forward or reversegear.
o The brake pedal fully depressed
in order to move the shift leverfrom the "P" (Park) position to any of the other positions.
o It is always possible to shift from "R", "N", "D", "2", "L" position.

CAUTION:
o Shift into "R", "D" and "P" only when the vehicle has completely stopped.
o Do not accelerate the engine in
reverse or any of the forward posi- tions with the brakes applied.
o Always apply the footbrake when shifting from "P" or "N", to "R", "D", "2" or "L" position.
o Do not use the "P" (Park) position
in place of the parking brake. Al- ways set the parking brake, shift the transaxle into "P" (Park) and turn off the ignition when you leave the vehicle, even momentarily. Never leave the vehicle unattended whilst the engine is running.
o When accelerating from a stop on
a steep hill, the vehicle may have a tendency to roll backwards. Shift- ing the shift lever into 2nd gear will help prevent the vehicle from rolling backwards.
o Check the automatic transaxle fluid
level regularly, and add fluid as necessary.

o The button in the selector handle
must be depressed before the se- lector can be moved.
o The engine may only be started
when the selector is at position "P"or "N".
o Ensure that the footbrake is firmly
applied when shifting from "P" or"N" to "D", "2", "L" or "R" and vice versa.
o Always engage the parking brake when the vehicle is unattended,never use the "P" position in place of the parking brake.
o Under normal circumstances, the selector should be placed in the "D"position and the transaxle allowedto select the most ideal ratio for the circumstances. In this position maxi- mum fuel economy will be achieved.
o When descending steep gradients where engine braking is required,the selector should be placed at the"2" or "L" position depending upon the vehicle speed.

SC130A1-E OVERDRIVE SWITCH
The overdrive switch prevents the transaxle upshifting higher than third gear when the switch is turned "OFF".The transaxle will start from rest in first gear and upshift to second and third gear depending upon the roadspeedand throttle opening but will not upshift to fourth gear. When the overdrive switch is turned "ON", the transaxlewill start from rest in first gear and will upshift, depending upon roadspeed and throttle opening to second, thirdand fourth gear. Therefore, when the overdrive switch is turned "OFF", the transaxle performs as a three speedunit and the overdrive warning light located in the instrument cluster will be illuminated. When the overdrive switch is turned "ON", the transaxle functionsas a fully automatic four speed unit with the maximum fuel economy po- tential of the vehicle being realized. SC140A1-E EFFECTIVE BRAKING Braking system performance and fric- tion material life are greatly affected by the driving style adopted. The follow- ing suggestions are made to assist inachieving the best results from the braking system.
o Anticipate the road and conditions
ahead in order that heavy braking may be avoided.
o When descending long gradients, use the engine to assist in retardingthe vehicle to minimize the possibil-ity of brake fade occurring.
o When trailer towing, ensure that the
trailer brakes function correctly anduse engine braking to assist the vehicle braking system. o Use only genuine Hyundai replace-
ment brake pads and shoes to en- sure consistent friction characteris-tics and wear rates.
o After driving through deep water
(e.g. fording), the brakes may be-come wet and performance reduced. Always check brake efficiency after emerging from the water and dry thebrakes by lightly depressing the brake pedal several times whilst driving slowly.
o Apply the parking brake only when the vehicle is at rest.
o Since the power assistance pro- vided by the brake servo is derived from the engine, coasting with the engine turned off or towing of thevehicle with the engine turned off will result in greatly increased pedal pressures being required to stop thevehicle.
o Do not hold the vehicle on an incline
with the accelerator pedal. This cancause the transmission to overheat. Always use the brake pedal or park- ing brake.

It is not a substitute for safe driving practices. Factors including speed, road conditions and driver steering input canall affect whether ESP will be effective in preventing a loss of control. It is still your responsibility to drive and cornerat reasonable speeds and to leave a sufficient margin of safety.
WARNING:
Electronic stability program is a driv- ing aid; all normal precautions for driving in inclement weather and on slippery road surfaces should beobserved.
! CAUTION:
Driving with varying tyre or wheel size may cause the ESP system to malfunction. When replacing tyres,make sure they are the same size as your original tyres. C310D01JM-EAT Indicators and Warning The indicators should illuminate when the ignition key is turned to ON orSTART but should go out after approxi- mately 3 seconds. If the indicators do not illuminate, or theESP-OFF indicator does not go out after approximately 3 seconds, have the vehicle checked by Hyundaiauthorised repairer. Should there be any unusual conditions in the device whilst driving, ESP-OFF indicator illuminates as a warning. If ESP-OFF indicator illuminates, pullyour car to a safe place and stop the engine. Then, start the engine again to check ifthe ESP-OFF indicator goes out. If the indicator remains lit even after the engine has been started, have your car checked by Hyundai authorised repairer.
C310B01JM-AAT ESP ON/OFF Mode When the ESP is operating, the ESP indicator in the instrument cluster willblink. If you turn the system off by pressing the ESP switch, the ESP-OFF indica-tor will come on and stay on. In the ESP-OFF mode, the stability control will be deactivated. Adjust your drivingaccordingly. To turn the system back on, press the switch again. The ESP- OFF indicator should go off. NOTE: The ESP mode will automatically be turned ON after the engine is turned off and restarted.
