ESC OFF usage
When driving The ESC OFF mode should only be used
briefly to help free the vehicle if stuck in
snow or mud by temporarily stopping
operation of the ESC to maintain wheel
torque.
To turn ESC off while driving, press the
ESC OFF button while driving on a flat
road surface.✽✽
NOTICE
Turning the ESC OFF does not affect
ABS or standard brake system opera-
tion.
CAUTION
Driving with varying tire or wheel sizes may cause the ESC system to
malfunction. When replacing tires,make sure they are the same size asyour original tires for this vehicle.
CAUTION
To prevent damage to the transaxle:
Do not allow wheel(s) of one axle to spin excessively while the
ESC, ABS, and brake warninglights are displayed. The repairswould not be covered by the vehi- cle warranty. Reduce engine
power and do not spin thewheel(s) excessively while these lights are displayed.
When operating the vehicle on a dynamometer, ensure the ESC isturned off (ESC OFF light illumi- nated).
WARNING
When the ESC is blinking, this indi- cates the ESC is active:
Drive slowly and NEVER attempt to
accelerate. NEVER press the ESC
OFF button while the ESC indicator
light is blinking or you may lose
control of the vehicle resulting inan accident.

VSM OFF condition
To cancel VSM operation, press the ESC
OFF button. ESC OFF indicator light
( ) will illuminate.
To turn on VSM, press the ESC OFF but-
ton again. The ESC OFF indicator lightwill go out. Hill-Start Assist Control (HAC) (if equipped)
The Hill-Start Assist Control (HAC) pre-
vents the vehicle from rolling backwards
when starting a vehicle from a stop on a
hill. The system operates the brakes
automatically for approximately 1.5 sec-
onds and releases the brake when the
accelerator pedal is depressed or after
1.5 seconds.✽✽
NOTICE
The HAC does not operate when the shift lever is in P (Park) or N (Neutral)
(for automatic transaxle vehicle.)
The HAC operates when: - the shift lever is in N (Neutral) or D
(Drive) on up hill.
- the shift lever is in R (Reverses) on
down hill.
(for manual transaxle vehicle)
The HAC activates even though the ESC (Electronic Stability Control) is
off but does not activate when the
ESC has malfunctioned.
WARNING
If ESC indicator light ( ) or EPS
warning light ( ) stays on, your
vehicle may have a malfunction
with the VSM system. When thewarning light illuminates we recom-
mend that the vehicle be checked
by an authorized HYUNDAI dealer
as soon as possible.
WARNING
Always be ready to depress the
accelerator pedal when starting off
on a incline. The HAC activates only
for approximately 1.5 seconds.
CAUTION

Snow or icy conditions
You need to keep sufficient distance
between your vehicle and the vehicle
in front of you.
Apply the brakes gently. Speeding,
rapid acceleration, sudden brake
applications, and sharp turns are
potentially very hazardous practices.
During deceleration, use engine
braking to the fullest extent. Sudden
brake applications on snowy or icy
roads may cause skids to occur.To drive your vehicle in deep snow, it may
be necessary to use snow tires or to
install tire chains on your tires.
Always carry emergency equipment.
Some of the items you may want to carry
include tire chains, tow straps or chains,
a flashlight, emergency flares, sand, a
shovel, jumper cables, a window scraper,
gloves, ground cloth, coveralls, a blanket,etc.
Snow tires
If you mount snow tires on your vehicle,
make sure to use radial tires of the same
size and load range as the original tires.
Mount snow tires on all four wheels to
balance your vehicle’s handling in all
weather conditions. The traction provided
by snow tires on dry roads may not be as
high as your vehicle's original equipment
tires. Check with the tire dealer for maxi-
mum speed recommendations.

Do not install studded tires without first
checking local and municipal regula-
tions for possible restrictions against
their use.

size and type to the vehicle's stan-

CAUTION
When using tire chains: Wrong size chains or improperly installed chains can damage your
vehicle's brake lines, suspension,body and wheels.
Use SAE “S” class or wire chains. If you hear noise caused by chains contacting the body,
retighten the chain to preventcontact with the vehicle body.
To prevent body damage, retight- en the chains after driving 0.5~1.0km (0.3~0.6 miles).
Do not use tire chains on vehicles equipped with aluminum wheels.If unavoidable, use a wire type chain.
Use wire chains less than 15 mm (0.59 in) wide to prevent damage
to the chain’s connection.

Tire care
For proper maintenance, safety, and
maximum fuel economy, you must
always maintain recommended tire
inflation pressures and stay within
the load limits and weight distribution
recommended for your vehicle. Recommended cold tire inflation pressures All tire pressures (including the
spare) should be checked when the
tires are cold. “Cold Tires” means the
vehicle has not been driven for at
least three hours or driven less than1.6 km (one mile).
Recommended pressures must be
maintained for the best ride, top vehi-
cle handling, and minimum tire wear.
For recommended inflation pressure
refer to “Tire and wheels” in chapter 8. All specifications (sizes and pres-
sures) can be found on a label
attached to the vehicle.
WARNING - Tire underin-
flation
Severe underinflation (70 kPa (10 psi) or more) can lead to
severe heat build-up, causing
blowouts, tread separation andother tire failures that can result
in the loss of vehicle control
leading to severe injury or
death. This risk is much higher
on hot days and when driving
for long periods at high speeds.

Tire rotation
To equalize tread wear, it is recom- mended that the tires be rotated
every 12,000 km (7,500 miles) or
sooner if irregular wear develops.
During rotation, check the tires for
correct balance.
When rotating tires, check for uneven
wear and damage. Abnormal wear is
usually caused by incorrect tire pres-
sure, improper wheel alignment, out-
of-balance wheels, severe braking or
severe cornering. Look for bumps or
bulges in the tread or side of tire.
Replace the tire if you find either of
these conditions. Replace the tire if
fabric or cord is visible. After rotation,
be sure to bring the front and rear tire
pressures to specification and check
lug nut tightness.
Refer to “Tire and wheels” in chapter 8.
Disc brake pads should be inspected
for wear whenever tires are rotated.
✽✽ NOTICE
Rotate radial tires that have an
asymmetric tread pattern only from
front to rear and not from right to
left.
WARNING
Do not use the compact spare tire for tire rotation.
Do not mix bias ply and radial ply tires under any circum-
stances. This may cause
unusual handling characteris-tics that could result in death,
severe injury, or property
damage.

Wheel replacement
When replacing the metal wheels for
any reason, make sure the new
wheels are equivalent to the original
factory units in diameter, rim widthand offset. Tire traction
Tire traction can be reduced if you
drive on worn tires, tires that are
improperly inflated or on slippery
road surfaces. Tires should be
replaced when tread wear indicators
appear. Slow down whenever there
is rain, snow or ice on the road, toreduce the possibility of losing con-trol.
WARNING
A wheel that is not the correct
size may adversely affect wheel
and bearing life, braking and
stopping abilities, handling
characteristics, ground clear-
ance, body-to-tire clearance,
snow chain clearance,speedometer and odometer cal-
ibration, headlight aim and
bumper height.

Using tires and wheel other than the recommended sizes
could cause unusual handling
characteristics and poor vehi-
cle control, resulting in a seri-ous accident.
Wheels that do not meet HYUNDAI’s specifications
may fit poorly and result in
damage to the vehicle or
unusual handling and poor
vehicle control.
The ABS works by comparing the speed of the wheels. Tire
size can affect wheel speed.
When replacing tires, all 4
tires must use the same size
originally supplied with the
vehicle. Using tires of a differ-
ent size can cause the ABS
(Anti-lock Brake System) and
ESC (Electronic Stability
Control) (if equipped) to work
irregularly.

Tire maintenance In addition to proper inflation, correct wheel alignment helps to decrease
tire wear. If you find a tire is worn
unevenly, have your dealer check thewheel alignment.
When you have new tires installed,
make sure they are balanced. This
will increase vehicle ride comfort and
tire life. Additionally, a tire should
always be rebalanced if it is removedfrom the wheel.Tire sidewall labeling
This information identifies and
describes the fundamental charac-
teristics of the tire and also provides
the tire identification number (TIN)
for safety standard certification. TheTIN can be used to identify the tire incase of a recall.
1. Manufacturer or brand name
Manufacturer or Brand name is
shown.
2. Tire size designation
A tire’s sidewall is marked with a tire
size designation. You will need this
information when selecting replace-
ment tires for your vehicle. The fol-
lowing explains what the letters and
numbers in the tire size designationmean.
Example tire size designation:
(These numbers are provided as an
example only; your tire size designa-
tor could vary depending on your
vehicle.) 165/60R14 64T
165 - Tire width in millimeters.
60 - Aspect ratio. The tire’s chapterheight as a percentage of its width.
R - Tire construction code (Radial).
14 - Rim diameter in inches.
64 - Load Index, a numerical code associated with the maximum
load the tire can carry.
T - Speed Rating Symbol. See the speed rating chart in this chapter
for additional information.

tant information that you need if you
ever have to replace one. The follow-
ing explains what the letters and
numbers in the wheel size designa-tion mean.
Example wheel size designation: 5.0JX14
5.0 - Rim width in inches. J - Rim contour designation.
14 - Rim diameter in inches. Tire speed ratings
The chart below lists many of the dif-
ferent speed ratings currently being
used for passenger car tire. The
speed rating is part of the tire size
designation on the sidewall of the
tire. This symbol corresponds to that
tire's designed maximum safe oper-ating speed.3. Checking tire life (TIN : Tire
Identification Number)
Any tires that are over 6 years old,
based on the manufacturing date,(including the spare tire) should be
replaced by new ones. You can find
the manufacturing date on the tire
sidewall (possibly on the inside of the
wheel), displaying the DOT Code.
The DOT Code is a series of num-
bers on a tire consisting of numbers
and English letters. The manufactur-
ing date is designated by the last four
digits (characters) of the DOT code.
DOT : XXXX XXXX OOOO
The front part of the DOT means a
plant code number, tire size and
tread pattern and the last four num-
bers indicate week and year manu-
factured.
For example:
DOT XXXX XXXX 1613 represents
that the tire was produced in the 16th
week of 2013.
