RESPONSIBILITY FOR MAINTENANCE
The maintenance requirements for your new Hyundai are found in Section 6. As the owner, it is your responsibility to see that all maintenance operations specified by themanufacturer are carried out at the appropriate intervals. When the vehicle is used in severe driving conditions, more frequent maintenance is required for some operations. Maintenance requirements for severe operating conditions are also included in Section 6.

The manufacturer also recommends that all service and maintenance on your car be performed by an authorized Hyundai dealer. Severe engine and transmission damage may result from the use of poor quality fuels and lubricants that do not meet Hyundai specifications. B070A01P-GAT MAINTENANCE It is necessary to maintain your vehicle in top operating condition in order to enjoy safe and pleasant driving.Some maintenance items can be done by the owner (Consumer information), while others should be done only by anauthorized dealer (periodic inspection and maintenance). For the maintenance items to be doneby the owner, prepare the appropriate materials and tools and follow the pro- cedures given in the "Consumer infor- mation" section of this manual. However, the periodic inspection andmaintenance should not be attempted by the owner, but should be done by an authorized HYUNDAI dealer.Correct performance of the periodic inspection and maintenance items re- quires specialized knowledge andequipment. Having these items performed by an authorized HYUNDAI dealer with thelatest technology and equipment will ensure that your vehicle is maintained for optimum performance, economy,and safety. In addition, having all periodic inspec-tion and maintenance done by an au-thorized HYUNDAI dealer is a prereq- uisite for validity of the warranty on your vehicle in the event of a claim.Refer to the separate "Service Book- let" for the periodic inspection and maintenance items and intervals. o When the SRS is activated, there may be a loud noise and fine dust will be released through the ve- hicle. These conditions are nor- mal and are not hazardous. How-ever, the fine dust generated dur- ing airbag deployment may cause skin irritation. Be sure to washyour hands and face thoroughly with lukewarm water and a mild soap after an accident in whichthe airbags were deployed. B240B05L
Passenger's Airbag
B240C01HP-GAT SRS Care The SRS is virtually maintenance-free and so there are no parts you cansafely service by yourself. The entire SRS system must be inspected by an authorized Hyundai dealer 10 yearsafter the date that the vehicle was manufactured. Any work on the SRS system, such as removing, installing, repairing, or any work on the steering wheel must beperformed by a qualified Hyundai tech- nician. Improper handling of the SRS system may result in serious personalinjury.
o The SRS can function only when
the ignition key is in the "ON" position. If the SRS SRI does not come on, or continuously re- mains on, after flashing for about6 seconds when the ignition key is turned to the "ON" position, or after the engine is started, orcomes on while driving, the SRS is not working properly. If this occurs, have your vehicle imme-diately inspected by your Hyundai dealer.
o Before you replace a fuse or dis-
connect a battery terminal, turnthe ignition key to the "LOCK" position or remove the ignitionkey. Never remove or replace the air bag related fuse(s) when the ignition key is in the "ON" posi-tion. Failure to heed this warning will cause the SRS SRI to illumi- nate.

If you need to accelerate rapidly, press the accelerator pedal all the way to thefloor. The transmission will automati- cally shift to a lower gear, depending on the speed. NOTE: Turn the overdrive switch on for good fuel economy and smooth driving. If engine braking is neededin the "D" range or if repeated up- shifting and downshifting between the 3rd and 4th gear is needed whenclimbing a gentle slope, it is recom- mended that the overdrive switch be turned off. Turn the overdriveswitch back on immediately after- ward.
CAUTION:
o Shift into "R" and "P" only when the vehicle has completelystopped.
o Do not accelerate the engine in
the reverse or any of the forwardpositions with the brakes applied.
o Always apply the footbrake when
shifting from "P" or "N" to "R","D", "2" or "L" position.
o Do not use the "P" position in
place of the parking brake. Al-ways set the parking brake, shift the transmission into "P" and turn off the ignition when you leave the vehicle, even momen-tarily. Never leave the vehicle unat- tended while the engine is run-ning.
o Check the automatic transmis-
sion fluid level regularly, and addfluid as necessary. See the maintenance schedule for the proper fluid recommen-dation.
! D080A01P-GAT OVERDRIVE SWITCH (If installed) When the overdrive switch is turned on, the transmission will automatically upshift to the second, third and over- drive gears. When the overdrive switchis turned off, the transmission will not upshift to the overdrive gear at all. For normal driving, the selector levershould be left in the "D" position and the overdrive switch turned on. To move the selector lever, the push but-ton on the selector lever handle may have to be depressed first.HSR3039

o Keep your car in good condition. Forbetter fuel economy and reduced maintenance costs, maintain your car in accordance with the mainte- nance schedule in Section 6. If youdrive your car in severe conditions, more frequent maintenance is re- quired (see Section 6 for details).
o Keep your car clean. For maximum service, your Hyundai should bekept clean and free of corrosivematerials. It is especially important that mud, dirt, ice, etc. not be al- lowed to accumulate on the under-side of the car. This extra weight can result in increased fuel con- sumption and also contribute to cor-rosion.
o Travel lightly. Don't carry unneces-
sary weight in your car. Weight re-duces fuel economy.
o Don't let the engine idle longer than
necessary. If you are waiting (andnot in traffic), turn off your engine and restart only when you're ready to go. o Remember, your Hyundai does not
require extended warm-up. As soonas the engine is running smoothly, you can drive away. In very cold weather, however, give your enginea slightly longer warm-up period.
o Don't "lug" or "over-rev" the engine.
Lugging is driving too slowly in toohigh a gear resulting in the engine bucking. If this happens, shift to a lower gear. Over-revving is racingthe engine beyond its safe limit. This can be avoided by shifting at the recommended speeds.
o Use your air conditioning sparingly. The air conditioning system is oper-ated by engine power so your fueleconomy is reduced when you use it.
o Don't "ride" the brake or clutch pedal.
This can increase fuel consumption and also increase wear on these components. In addition, driving with your foot resting on the brake pedalmay cause the brakes to overheat, which reduces their effectiveness and may lead to more serious con-sequences.
o Take care of your tires. Keep them
inflated to the recommended pres-sure. Incorrect inflation, either too much or too little, results in unnec- essary tire wear. Check the tire pres-sures at least once a month.
o Be sure that the wheels are aligned
correctly. Improper alignment canresult from hitting curbs or driving too fast over irregular surfaces. Poor alignment causes faster tire wearand may also result in other prob- lems as well as greater fuel con- sumption.

C190B01S-AAT Trailer Hitches Select the proper hitch and ball combi- nation, making sure that its location iscompatible with that of the trailer or vehicle being towed. Use a quality non-equalizing hitch which distributesthe tongue load uniformly throughout the chassis. The hitch should be bolted securely to the car and installed by a qualified technician. DO NOT USE A HITCHDESIGNED FOR TEMPORARY IN- STALLATION AND NEVER USE ONE THAT ATTACHES ONLY TO THEBUMPER.C190C01P-GAT Trailer Brakes If your trailer is equipped with a braking system, make sure it conforms to fed-eral and/or local regulations and that it is properly installed and operating cor- rectly. NOTE: If you tow a trailer or vehicle, your car will require more frequent main-tenance due to the additional load. See "Maintenance Under Severe Usage Conditions" on page 6-11.
CAUTION:
o Never connect a trailer brake sys- tem directly to the vehicle brakesystem.
o When towing a trailer on steep
grades (in excess of 12%) payclose attention to the engine cool- ant temperature gauge to ensure the engine does not overheat. Ifthe needle of the coolant tem- perature gauge moves across the dial towards "H" (HOT), pull over

C190A01A-GAT TRAILER OR VEHICLE TOWING If you are considering towing with your car, you should first check with yourProvince Department of Motor Vehicles to determine their legal requirements. Since laws vary from province to prov-ince, the requirements for towing trail- ers, cars, other types of vehicles, or apparatus may differ. Ask your Hyundaidealer for further details before towing.
CAUTION:
Do not do any towing with your carduring its first 2,000 km (1,200 miles)in order to allow the engine to prop- erly break in. Failure to heed this caution may result in serious en-gine or transmission damage.

F010A01P-GAT In order to maintain the value of your vehicle, it is necessary to perform regular maintenance using the properprocedure. Be sure to maintain your vehicle in compliance with any perti- nent environmental pollution controlregulations.Carefully select the materials to beused for washing, etc., to be sure thatthey do not contain corrosives; if in doubt, contact an authorized HYUNDAI dealer for assistance in the selectionof these materials. Do not wash the vehicle in direct sun-
light.
Park the vehicle in the shade and
spray it with water to remove dust.Next, using an ample amount of cleanwater and a vehicle washing brush or sponge, wash the vehicle from top to bottom.
Use a mild vehicle washing soap if
necessary. Rinse thoroughly and wipedry with a soft cloth. After washing the vehicle (including washing in an auto- matic vehicle wash), carefully cleanthe joints and flanges of the doors, hood, etc., where dirt is likely to re- main.

Waxing
Waxing the vehicle will help preventthe adherence of dust and road chemi-cals to the paintwork. Apply a wax solution after washing the vehicle, and apply wax at least once every threemonths. F010D01P-GAT
Polishing
The vehicles should only be polished if
the paintwork has become stained or lost its luster. Mat-finish parts and plastic bumpers must not be polished;polishing these parts will stain them or damage their finish.

Wheels
The wheels are painted and, therefore,
require the same care and mainte- nance as the vehicle body.

Chrome parts
In order to prevent spots and corrosion
of chrome parts, wash with water, drythoroughly, and apply a special protec-tive coating. This should be done move frequently in the winter.
F010B01P-GAT Washing Chemicals contained in the dirt and dust picked up from the road surface can damage the paint coat and body of your vehicle if left in prolonged con-tact.Frequent washing is the best way toprotect your vehicle from this damage. This will also be effective in protecting it from environmental elements suchas rain, snow, salt air, etc.
