9LOCKING DIFFERENTIAL
!
cially careful when braking, acceler- ating or shifting gears. On a slipperysurface, an abrupt change in ve- hicle speed can cause the drive wheels to lose traction and the ve-hicle to go out of control.
WARNING:
o Avoid high cornering speeds.
o Do not make quick steering wheel movements, such as sharp lane changes or fast, sharp turns.
o Always wear your seat belts. In a collis ion crash, an unbelted person
is significantly more likely to die than a person wearing a seatbelt.
o The risk of rollover is greatly in-
creased if you lose control ofyour vehicle at highway speeds.
o Loss of control often occurs if
two or more wheels drop off theroadway and the driver oversteers to reenter the roadway.
o In the event your vehicle leaves the roadway, do not steer sharply.Instead, slow down before pull- ing back into the travel lanes.
o Never exceed posted speed lim- its. D190A01HR-GAT (If Installed) A locking differential, if equipped, is for the rear wheel differential only. Thefeatures of this locking differential are described below: Just as with a conventional differential,the wheel on one side is allowed to turn at a different speed from the wheel on the other side when the vehicle iscornering. The difference between the locking differential and a conventional differential is that if the wheel on oneside of the vehicle loses traction, a greater amount of torque is applied to the rear wheel on the other side toimprove traction. NOTE: In a stationary position, the LD (Locking Differential) will operate when the difference of the revolu- tion speed between the rear rightwheel and the rear left wheel oc- curs.
The following procedures can be used to confirm that the locking differentialis functioning properly:
(1) Position the vehicle so that one
wheel is on a dry paved surface and the other on ice, snow, mud, etc. Drive the vehicle, and observe theoperation of the locking differential. The vehicle should not become stuck if the differential is function-ing properly.
(2) Depress the accelerator pedal
gradually, and then when traction isgood, depress it forcefully. If the vehicle accelerates well, the differ- ential is functioning properly.

8. Lower Vehicle and Tighten
Nuts
Lower the car to the ground by moving the jack handle up and down. Then position the wrench as shown in the drawing and tighten the wheel nuts. Besure the socket is seated completely over the nut. Do not stand on the wrench handle or use an extensionpipe over the wrench handle. Go around the wheel tightening every other nut until they are all tight. Thendouble-check each nut for tightness. After changing wheels, have a techni- cian tighten the wheel nuts to theirproper torque as soon as possible. OHR058118D060H02O-AAT 7. Re-install Wheel Nuts To reinstall the wheel, hold it on the studs, put the wheel nuts on the studsand tighten them finger tight. The nuts should be installed with their small diameter ends directed inward. Jigglethe tire to be sure it is completely seated, then tighten the nuts as much as possible with your fingers again.

o Brake Hoses and Lines Visually check for proper installation, chafing, cracks, deterioration and any leakage. Replace any deteriorated or damaged parts immediately. F070G02A-GAT
o Brake Fluid Check brake fluid level in the brake fluid reservoir. The level should be between "MIN" and "MAX" marks on the side of the reservoir. Use only hydraulic brake fluid conforming to DOT3 or DOT 4.

o Suspension Mounting Bolts
Check the suspension connections for
looseness or damage. Retighten to thespecified torque. F070M01A-AAT
o Steering Gear Box, Linkage &
Boots/Lower arm Ball Joint
With the vehicle stopped and engine
off, check for excessive free-play in the steering wheel. Check the linkage for bends or damage. Check the dustboots and ball joints for deterioration, cracks, or damage. Replace any dam- aged parts.

o Power Steering Pump, Belt
and Hoses
Check the power steering pump and
hoses for leakage and damage. Re-place any damaged or leaking parts immediately. Inspect the power steer- ing belt for evidence of cuts, cracks,excessive wear, oiliness and proper tension. Replace or adjust it if neces- sary.

o Brake Pads, Calipers and
Rotors
Check the pads for excessive wear,
discs for run out and wear, and cali- pers for fluid leakage.

o Exhaust Pipe and Muffler
Visually inspect the exhaust pipes,
muffler and hangers for cracks, dete-rioration, or damage. Start the engine and listen carefully for any exhaustgas leakage. Tighten connections or replace parts as necessary.

o Rear Brake Drums/Linings
Parking Brake
Check the rear brake drums and lin-
ings for scoring, burning, leaking fluid, broken parts, and excessive wear. Inspect the parking brake system in- cluding the parking brake lever andcables. For detailed service proce- dures, refer to the Shop Manual.

o Brake operation, including parking
brake
o Manual transmission operation, in- cluding clutch operation
o Seat control condition and operation
o Seat belt condition and operation
o Sunvisor operation If you notice anything that does not operate correctly or appears to be functioning incorrectly, inspect it care-fully and seek assistance from your Hyundai dealer if service is needed.

o Wheel condition and wheel nut torque
o Exhaust system condition

!WARNING:
Be very careful when draining the engine oil as it may be hot enough to burn you!
4. When the oil has stopped draining, replace the drain plug using a new gasket and retighten by turning it clockwise.
Tightening torque : 3.5 ~ 4.5 kgf.m
5. Remove the oil filter by turning it counterclockwise with a oil filter wrench of the proper size. A certainamount of oil will come out when you remove the filter. So be sure to have your drain pan in place underneathit.
6. Install a new oil filter in accordance
with the instructions on the carton oron the filter itself. Do not over-tighten.
Tightening torque: 2.3 ~ 2.5 kgf.m Be sure that the mounting surfaceon the engine is clean and that theold gasket is removed completely. Lubricate the new gasket on the filter with clean engine oil beforeinstallation.

7. Remove the engine oil level dipstick.
8. Refill the crankcase with the recom- mended engine oil slowly. Refer to the specification in chapter 9 for engine oil capacity.
CAUTION:
o Slowly pour the recommended oil by using a funnel. Do not overfill not to damage the engine.
o Do not spill engine oil, when add- ing or changing engine oil. If youdrop the engine oil on the engine room, wipe it off immediately. 9. Start the engine and check to be
sure no oil is leaking from the drainplug or oil filter.
10. Shut off the engine and recheck the
oil level.
NOTE: Always dispose of used engine oil in an environmentally acceptable man- ner. It is suggested that it be placedin a sealed container and taken to a service station for reclamation. Do not pour the oil on the ground or putit into the household trash.
WARNING:
Used motor oil may cause irritationor cancer of the skin if left in contact with the skin for prolonged periods of time. Wash your hands thoroughlywith soap and warm water as soon as possible after handling used oil.

I070A01A-AAT TIRE BALANCING A tire that is out of balance may affect handling and tire wear. The tires on your Hyundai were balanced before the car was delivered but may needbalancing again during the years you own the car. Whenever a tire is dismounted forrepair, it should be rebalanced before
being reinstalled on the car. I080A01A-AAT TIRE TRACTION Tire traction can be reduced if you drive on worn tires, tires that are im-properly inflated or on slippery road surfaces. Tires should be replaced when tread wear indicators appear. Toreduce the possibility of losing control, slow down whenever there is rain, snow or ice on the road. I090A01S-GAT WHEN TO REPLACE TIRES
Tires should be rotated every 5,000 km (3,000 miles). If you notice that tires arewearing unevenly between rotations, have the car checked by a Hyundai dealer so the cause may be corrected.After rotating, adjust the tire pressures and be sure to check wheel nut torque.
WARNING:
Do not mix bias-ply and radial-ply tires under any circumstances. Thismay cause dangerous handling char- acteristics.

o Driving on worn-out tires is dan- gerous! Worn-out tires can cause loss of braking effectiveness,steering control and traction.
When replacing tires, never mix radial and bias-ply tires on thesame car. If you replace radial tires with bias-ply tires, they must be installed in sets of four.
o Using tires and wheels of other than the recommended sizes maycause unusual handling charac-teristics that may cause death, serious injury or property dam- age.
The original tires on your car have treadwear indicators. The tread wear indica-tors appear when the tread depth is 1.6 mm (0.06 in.). The tire should be re- placed when these appear as a solid baracross two or more grooves of the tread. Always replace your tires with those of the recommended size. If youchange wheels, the new wheel's rim width and offset must meet Hyundai specification.
