To keep locks from freezing
To keep the locks from freezing\b
squirt an approved deicer fluid or
glycerine into the key opening. If a
lock is covered with ice\b squirt it with
an approved deicing fluid to remove
the ice. If the lock is frozen internally\b
you may be able to thaw it out by
using a heated key. Handle the heat
ed key with care to avoid injury.
Use approved window washerantifreeze in system
To keep the water in the window
washer system from freezing\b add an
approved window washer antifreeze
solution in accordance with instruc
tions on the container. Window wash
er antifreeze is available from an
authorized HYUNDAI dealer and
most auto parts outlets. Do not use
engine coolant or other types of anti
freeze as these may damage the
paint finish.
Don't let your parking brake freeze
Under some conditions your parking
brake can freeze in the engaged
position. This is most likely to hap
pen when there is an accumulation
of snow or ice around or near the
rear brakes or if the brakes are wet.
If there is a risk the parking brake
may freeze\b apply it only temporarily
while you put the shift lever in P (for
Automatic Transaxle/Continuously
Variable Transaxle) or in first or
reverse gear (for Manual Transaxle)
and block the rear wheels so the
vehicle cannot roll. Then release the
parking brake.
Don't let ice and snow accumulate underneath
Under some conditions\b snow and
ice can build up under the fenders
and interfere with the steering. When
driving in severe winter conditions
where this may happen\b you should
periodically check underneath the
car to be sure the movement of the
front wheels and the steering com
ponents is not obstructed.
Carry emergency equipment
Depending on the severity of the
weather\b you should carry appropri
ate emergency equipment. Some of
the items you may want to carry
include tire chains\b tow straps or
chains\b flashlight\b emergency flares\b
sand\b shovel\b jumper cables\b window
scraper\b gloves\b ground cloth\b cover
alls\b blanket\b etc.
Don't place foreign objects or materials in the engine compartment
Placement of foreign objects or
materials which prevent cooling of
the engine\b in the engine compart
ment\b may cause a failure or com
bustion. The manufacturer is not
responsible for the damage caused
by such placement.

The hazard warning flasher serves
as a warning to other drivers to exer-
cise extreme caution when
approaching, overtaking, or passing
your vehicle.
It should be used whenever emer-
gency repairs are being made or
when the vehicle is stopped near the
edge of a roadway.
To turn the hazard warning flasher
on or off, press the hazard warning
flasher button with the ignition switch
in any position. The button is located
in the center console switch panel. All turn signal lights will flash simul-
taneously.
• The hazard warning flasher oper-
ates whether your vehicle is run-
ning or not.
• The turn signals do not work when the hazard flasher is on.""

turns over slowly • Be sure the shift lever is in N
(Neutral) or P (Park) if it is a
Continuously Variable Transaxle
vehicle. The engine starts only
when the shift lever is in N
(Neutral) or P (Park).
• Check the battery connections to be sure they are clean and tight.
• Turn on the interior light. If the light dims or goes out when you operate
the starter, the battery is drained.
Do not push or pull the vehicle to
start it. This could cause damage to
your vehicle. See instructions for "Jump Starting"
provided in this chapter.
If the engine turns over normally but doesn't start • Check the fuel level and add fuel if
necessary.
If the engine still does not start, we
recommend that you call an author-
ized HYUNDAI dealer for assistance.

may cause the catalytic converter
to overload which can lead to
damage to the emission control

• Only use a 12-volt power supply (battery or jumper system) to jump

Jump starting procedure 1.Position the vehicles close enough that the jumper cables will reach,
but do not allow the vehicles to
touch.
2.Avoid fans or any moving parts in the engine compartment at all
times, even when the vehicles are
turned off.
3.Turn off all electrical devices such as radios, lights, air conditioning,
etc. Put the vehicles in P (Park, for
Continuously Variable Transaxle
vehicle) or neutral (for Manual
Transaxle vehicle), and set the
parking brakes. Turn both vehicles
OFF.

are generally not covered by war-
ranties and you may be charged for
labor, parts and lubricants used.
Owner maintenance schedule When you stop for fuel:• Check the engine oil level.
• Check the coolant level in coolant
reservoir.
• Check the windshield washer fluid level.
• Look for low or under-inflated tires.
• Check the radiator and condenser. Check if the front of the radiator
and condenser are clean and not
blocked with leaves, dirt or insects
etc.
If any of the above parts areextremely dirty or you are not sure
of their condition, we recommend
that you contact an authorized
HYUNDAI dealer.
While operating your vehicle:• Note any changes in the sound of the exhaust or any smell of
exhaust fumes in the vehicle.
• Check for vibrations in the steering wheel. Notice any increased steer-
ing effort or looseness in the steer-
ing wheel, or change in its straight-
ahead position.
• Notice if your vehicle constantly turns slightly or "pulls" to one side
when traveling on smooth, level
road.
• When stopping, listen and check for unusual sounds, pulling to one
side, increased brake pedal travel
or "hard-to-push" brake pedal.
• If any slipping or changes in the operation of your transaxle occurs,
check the transaxle fluid level.
• Check Continuously Variable Transaxle P (Park) function.
• Check the parking brake.
• Check for fluid leaks under your vehicle (water dripping from the air
conditioning system during or after
use is normal).

Be careful when checking your
engine coolant level when the
engine is hot. Scalding hot coolant
and stea m may blow out under
pressure. This could cause burns
or other serious injury.
WARNING

AAt least monthly:• Check the coolant level in theengine coolant reservoir.
• Check the operation of all exterior lights, including the stoplights, turn
signals and hazard warning flash-
ers.
• Check the inflation pressures of all tires including the spare for tires
that are worn, show uneven wear,
or are damaged.
• Check for loose wheel lug nuts.
At least twice a year (i.e., every Spring and Fall):• Check the radiator, heater and air
conditioning hoses for leaks or
damage.
• Check the windshield washer spray and wiper operation. Clean
wiper blades with clean cloth
dampened with washer fluid.
• Check the headlight alignment.
• Check the muffler, exhaust pipes, shields and clamps.
• Check the lap/shoulder belts for wear and function.
At least once a year:• Clean the body and door drainholes.
• Lubricate the door hinges and checks, and hood hinges.
• Lubricate the door and hood locks and latches.
• Lubricate the door rubber weather- strips.
• Check the air conditioning system.
• Inspect and lubricate Continuously Variable Transaxle linkage and
controls.
• Clean the battery and terminals.
• Check the brake/clutch fluid level.

Information
Continuously Variable Transaxle fluid
color is basically light amber.
As the vehicle is driven, the
Continuously Variable Transaxle fluid
will begin to look darker.
It is normal condition and you should
not judge the need to replace the fluid
based upon the changed color.
The use of non-specified fluid (even
marked as compatible with genuine)
could result in shift quality d eteriora-
tion and vibrations, eventually, the
transaxle failure.
Use only specified Continuously
Variabl e Transaxle fluid. (Refer to
"Recommended lubricants and
capacities" in chapter 8.)Brake hoses and linesVisually check for proper installation,
chafing, cracks, deterioration and
any leakage. Replace any deteriorat-
ed or damaged parts immediately.Brake fluidCheck brake fluid level in the brake
fluid reservoir. The level should be
between "MIN" (Minimum) and
"MAX" (Maximum) marks on the side
of the reservoir. Use only hydraulic
brake fluid conforming to DOT 3 or

#!$$Draining water from fuel filterThe fuel filter for diesel engine plays
an important role of separating water
from fuel and accumulating the water
in its bottom.
If water accumulates in the fuel filter,
the warning light comes on when the
ignition switch is in the ON position.
If this warning light turned
on, we recommend that
the system be serviced by
an authorized HYUNDAI
dealer.If the water accumulated in the fuel
filter is not drained at proper times,
damages to the major parts such as
the fuel system can be caused by water permeation in the fuel filter.
Extracting air from the fuel filterIf you drive until you have no fuel left
or if you replace the fuel filter, be
sure to extract air from the fuel sys-
tem as it makes it difficult to start the
engine.
1. Pump up and down(1) approxi- mately 50 times until the pump is
hard.
2. Extract air from the fuel filter by removing the bolt(2) with a cross-
tip screw driver and reinstall the
bolt(2).
3. Pump up and down(1) approxi- mately 15 times.
4. Extract air from the fuel filter by removing the bolt(2) with a cross-
tip screw driver and reinstall the
bolt(2).
5. Pump up and down(1) approxi- mately 5 times.
Information
Use cloths when you extract air sothat the fuel is not sprayed around.
Clean the fuel around the fuel filter or the injection pump before start-
ing the engine to prevent fire.
Finally, check each part if the fuel is leaking.i

3.Install the new blade assembly by inser ting the center part into the
slot in the wiper arm until it clicks
into place.
4.Make sure the blade assembly is installed firmly by trying to pull it
slightly.
