If you are mechanically inclined, own a few tools that are required and want to take the time to do so, you can inspect and service a number of items. Formore information about doing it your- self, see Section 6. F010F01A-GAT
A Few Tips
Whenever you have your Hyundai ser- viced, keep copies of the service records in your glovebox. This will help assure you can document the requiredprocedures being performed to keep your warranties in effect. This is espe- cially important when service is notperformed by an authorized Hyundai dealer. F020A03S-GAT
SCHEDULED MAINTENANCE REQUIREMENTS
Inspection should be performed any time a malfunction is experienced or suspected. Receipts for all emission control system services should be re-tained to demonstrate compliance with conditions of the emissions system warranty. For severe usage maintenance require- ments, see page 5-7 of this section.

Checking the Compressor DriveBelt
When the air conditioning is being
used regularly, the compressor drive belt tension should be checked at least once a month. To check the drive belt tension, press
down on the belt halfway between theengine crankshaft and compressor pulleys. Pressing with your finger, you should not be able to deflect this beltanymore than 8.0 mm. If you have the instruments to check it with a force of 98N (22 lb.), the deflectionshould be approx. 8.0 mm (0.315 in.). If the belt is too loose, have it ad- justed by your Hyundai dealer. When installing a container of liquid air freshener inside a vehicle, do not place it near the instrument cluster nor on the instrument panel pad surface. If there is any leakage from the air freshener onto these areas (instrument cluster, instrument panel pad or air ventilator), it may damage these parts.If the liquid from the air freshener does leak onto these areas, wash them with water immediately.

SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRA- INT (AIRBAG) SYSTEM

Driver's Airbag
B240A02F-EAT Your Hyundai is equipped with a Supple- mental Restraint (Airbag) System. The indications of the system's presence are the letters "SRS AIR BAG" em-bossed on the airbag pad cover in the steering wheel and the passenger's side front panel pad above the glove box. The Hyundai SRS consists of airbagsinstalled under the pad covers in thecentre of the steering wheel and the passenger's side front panel above the glove box. The purpose of the SRS is toprovide the vehicle's driver and/or the front passenger with additional protec- tion than that offered by the seat beltsystem alone, in case of a frontal im- pact of sufficient severity. NOTE: Be sure to read information about the SRS on the labels provided on the reverse side of the sun visor and in the glove box.
WARNING:
o As its name implies, the SRS is designed to work with, and besupplemental to, the driver's andthe passenger's three point seat belt systems and is not a substi- tute for them. Therefore your seatbelts must be worn at all times whilst the vehicle is in motion. In addition, the airbags deploy onlyin certain frontal impact condi- tions severe enough to likely cause significant injury to the ve-hicle occupants.
o The SRS is designed to deploy
the airbags only when an impactis sufficiently severe and when the impact angle is less than 30° from the forward longitudinal axisof the vehicle and will not deploy in side, rear or rollover impacts. Additionally, the airbags will onlydeploy once. Thus, seat belts must be worn at all times.

The SRS service reminder indicator (SRI) on the instrument panel will blinkfor approximately 6 seconds after the ignition key is turned to the "ON" posi- tion or after the engine is started, afterwhich the SRI should go out. The airbag modules are located both in the centre of the steering wheel and in the front passenger's panel above the glove box. When the SRSCM detects a considerable impact to the front of the vehicle, it will automatically deploy the airbags. Upon deployment, tear seams molded directly into the pad covers will sepa- rate under pressure from the expansion of the airbags. Further opening of thecovers then allows full inflation of the airbags. A fully inflated airbag in combination with a properly worn seat belt slows the driver's or the passenger's forward mo- tion, thus reducing the risk of head or chest injury. After complete inflation, the airbag im- mediately starts deflating, enabling thedriver to maintain forward visibility.

CAUTION:
Do not install or place any accesso- ries (drink holder, cassette holder, sticker, etc) on the front passenger's panel above the glove box in a ve-hicle with passenger's side air bag. Such objects may become danger- ous projectiles and cause injury ifthe passenger's side air bag inflates.

o If components of the airbag sys-
tem must be discarded, or if the vehicle must be scrapped, certain safety precautions must be ob- served. Your Hyundai authorisedrepairer knows these precautions and can give you the necessary information. Failure to follow theseprecautions and procedures could increase the risk of personal in- jury.
o If you sell your vehicle, be sure to inform the new owner of theseimportant points and make cer-tain that this manual is transferred to the new owner.
o If your car was flooded and has soaked carpeting or water on floor-ing, you shouldn't try to start en- gine; have the car towed to Hyundaiauthorised repairer.
o Do not replace the bumper or the
bumper guard with the one otherthan the Hyundai genuine parts. Otherwise, it can adversely affect SRS performance and lead to un-expected injury.
o For cleaning the airbag pad cov-
ers, use only a soft, dry cloth orone which has been moistenedwith plain water. Solvents or clean- ers could adversely affect the airbag covers and proper deploy-ment of the system.
o No objects should be placed over
or near the airbag modules on thesteering wheel, instrument panel, and the front passenger's panel above the glove box, because anysuch object could cause harm if the vehicle is in a crash severe enough to cause the airbags toinflate.
o If the airbags inflate, they must be
replaced by an Hyundai authorisedrepairer.
o Do not tamper with or disconnect
SRS wiring, or other componentsof the SRS system. Doing so could result in injury, due to accidental firing of the airbags or by render-ing the SRS inoperative.

SB340B3-E Interior Light The interior courtesy light has a button of three positions. The three positions are:
oDR In the "DR" position, the interior cour- tesy light comes on when any door is opened regardless of the ignition key position. The light goes out when thedoor is closed.
oON In the "ON" position, the light stays on at all times.
2. Turn the hexagonal bolts with a socket
wrench counterclockwise to removethe front overhead console.
3. Insert the hexagonal head wrench
provided with the vehicle into thesocket. This wrench can be found in the vehicle's luggage room or glove box.

INTERIOR LIGHT
The two map lights are located at each side of the interior light. The lights may be operated by depress- ing the switch to turn on the light andpressing again to turn off the light. This light produces a spot beam for conve- nient use as a map light at night or asa personal light for the driver or the passenger.

The outside rear view mirror can be adjusted in any direction to give the maximum rear view vision. The remote control outside rear view mirror switch controls the adjustments for passenger side door mirror. To adjust the position of either mirror:
1. Move the selecting switch to the "L" (or "R") position to activate the ad- justable mechanism for the adjust-ing door mirror.
2. Adjust mirror angle by depressing
the appropriate directional switch asillustrated.

o Replace the filter every 10,000 miles or once a year. If the car is being driven in severe conditionssuch as dusty, rough roads, more frequent air filter inspections and changes are required.
