6CHECKING THE ENGINE OIL

Recommended Oil Gasoline Engine Engine oil is essential to the perfor- mance and service of the engine. It is suggested that you check the oil level at least once a week in normal useand more often if you are on a trip or driving in severe conditions. The engine oil quality should meet the following classification: API SJ, SL or ABOVE, ILSAC GF-3 or ABOVE G030B01JMNOTE:
o For good fuel economy, SAE 5W- 20 (5W-30), ILSAC GF-3 engine oilis preferred regardless of regional option and engine variation.
o If SAE 5W-20, ILSAC GF-3 engine oil is not available, secondaryrecommended engine oil for cor- responding temperature rangecan be used.

mance and service of the engine. It is suggested that you check the oil levelevery 500km or before starting a long trip and more often if you are driving in severe conditions.
The engine oil quality should meet

To Check the Oil Level

Before checking the oil, warm up the
engine to normal operating tempera- ture and be sure your vehicle is parkedon level ground. Turn the engine off. G030C02FC
Diesel engine
!WARNING:
Be very careful not to touch the radiator hose when checking the engine oil as it may be hot enough to burn you.
Wait about five minutes, then removethe dipstick, wipe it off, fully reinsertthe dipstick and withdraw it again. Then note the highest level the oil has reached on the dipstick. It should bebetween the upper "F" and lower "L" range.

WARNING:
Do not remove the radiator cap
when the engine is hot. When the engine is hot, the engine coolant is under pressure and may eruptthrough the opening if the cap is removed. You could be seriously burned if you do not observe thisprecaution. Do not remove the radiator cap until the radiator is cool to the touch.
10. Start the engine and check to be
sure no oil is leaking from thedrain plug or oil filter.
11.Shut off the engine and recheck
the oil level.
NOTE:
o It is recommended that the en- gine oil and filter should be changed by an authorized Hyundai dealer.
o Always dispose of used engine oil in an environmentally accept-able manner. It is suggested that it be placed in a sealed container and taken to a service station formaybe reclaimation. Do not pour the oil on the ground or put it into the household trash.
WARNING:
Used motor oil may cause irrita- tion or cancer of the skin if left in contact with the skin for prolongedperiods of time. Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and warm water as soon as possible afterhandling used oil.
8. After mounting a new centerpipe O-
ring, new oil filter element and newO-ring to upper cap, install the up- per cap to oil filter housing and retighten by turning it clockwise.Do not over-tighten. Tightening torque : 2.5 kgf.m
CAUTION:
Don't use old oil filter upper cap O-ring and centerpipe O-ring
9. Refill the crankcase with the rec- ommended engine oil. Refer to the specification in chapter 9 for engine oil capacity.
CAUTION:
Slowly pour the recommended oilby into a funnel. Do not overfill not to damage the engine.

CAUTION:
o Radiator antifreeze (engine cool- ant) should not be used in the washer system because it will damage the car's finish.
o The washer should not be oper- ated if the washer reservoir isempty. This can damage the washer fluid pump.

transaxle is 2.15 liters (2.3 U.S. quarts) (2.0 liters, (2.11 U.S. quarts) -1.5 CRDi). Drain plug

o Windshield washer fluid is poi- sonous to humans and animals.Do not drink windshield washerfluid. Serious injury or death could occur.
The washer fluid reservoir supplies
fluid to the windshield washer sys- tem.
A good quality washer fluid should be
used to fill the washer reservoir. Thefluid level should be checked more frequently during inclement weather or whenever the washer system is inmore frequent use. The capacity of the washer reservoir
is 3.0 liters (3.2 U.S. quarts).

The fluid in the battery contains a
strong solution of sulfuric acid, which is poisonous and highly corrosive. Be careful not to spill it on yourself or the car. If you do spill battery fluid onyourself, immediately do the follow- ing:
o If battery fluid is on your skin, flush
the affected areas with water for at least 15 minutes and then seek medical assistance.
o If battery fluid is in your eyes, rinse out your eyes with water and getmedical assistance as soon as possible. While you are being drivento get medical assistance, continue to rinse your eyes by using a sponge or soft cloth saturated withwater.
o If you swallow battery fluid, drink a large quantity of water or milk fol- lowed by milk of magnesia, eat a raw egg or drink vegetable oil. Getmedical assistance as soon as possible. While batteries are being charged (either by a battery charger or by thevehicle's alternator), they produce explosive gases. Always observe these warnings to prevent injuries fromoccurring:
o Charge batteries only in a well ventilated area.
o Do not permit flames, sparks or smoking in the area.
o Keep children away from the area.

To check the power steering fluid level, be sure the ignition is "OFF",then check to make certain that the power steering fluid level is between the "MAX" and "MIN" level markingson the fluid reservoir. NOTE: Grinding noise from the power steering pump may be heard im- mediately after the engine is startedin extremely cold conditions (be- low - 20°C). If the noise stops dur- ing warm up, there is no abnormalfunction in the system. It is due to a power steering fluid characteris- tic in extremely cold conditions. Recommended Fluid Use PSF-3 type fluid NOTE: Do not start the engine when the power steering oil reservoir is empty.

CHECKING ELECTRIC COOLING FANS

The cooling fan is controlled by engine coolant temperature and may sometimes operate even whenthe engine is not running. Use extreme caution when working near the blades of the cooling fan,so that you are not injured by a rotating fan blade. The engine oil level should be checked with the engine at normal operating temperature and the vehicle parkedupon level ground. If the indicated oil level is at or below the lower mark of the dipstick, oil should be added until the level is at orbelow the upper mark.
WARNING:
Be very careful not to touch the
radiator hose when checking the engine oil as it may be hot enough to burn you. Prior to checking the level, the vehicle
should be allowed to stand for severalminutes after the engine has been switched off to allow the oil to drain back to the sump.
Withdraw the dipstick and wipe it with
a clean rag. Replace the dipstick fullyand withdraw again when the oil levelmay be read from the stick. Normal oil level is indicated when the oil is present between the two marks on the stick. Itis not necessary to add oil if the level is above the lower mark and in any case, oil must not be added to thedegree that the level exceeds the up- per mark. Replace the dipstick fully after checking the level.
