B750A02A-AAT How Car Audio Works AM and FM radio signals are broad- cast from transmitter towers located around your city. They are intercepted by the radio antenna on your car. Thissignal is then received by the radio and sent to your car speakers. When a strong radio signal has reachedyour vehicle, the precise engineering of your audio system ensures the best possible quality reproduction. However,in some cases the signal coming to your vehicle may not be strong and clear. This can be due to factors suchas the distance from the radio station, closeness of other strong radio sta- tions or the presence of buildings, bridges or other large obstructions inthe area.

AM broadcasts can be received at greater distances than FM broadcasts.This is because AM radio waves are transmitted at low frequencies. These long, low frequency radio waves canfollow the curvature of the earth rather than travelling straight out into the ionosphere. In addition, they curvearound obstructions so that they can provide better signal coverage. FM broadcasts are transmitted at highfrequencies and do not bend to follow the earth's surface. Because of this,FM broadcasts generally begin to fade at short distances from the station. Also, FM signals are easily affected bybuildings, mountains, or other obstruc- tions. These can result in certain lis- tening conditions which might lead youto believe a problem exists with your radio. The following conditions are nor- mal and do not indicate radio trouble:

o Fading - As your car moves away
from the radio station, the signal will weaken and sound will begin to fade. When this occurs, we suggest thatyou select another stronger station.
o Flutter/Static - Weak FM signals or
large obstructions between thetransmitter and your radio can dis- turb the signal causing static or flut- tering noises to occur. Reducing thetreble level may lessen this effect until the disturbance clears. o Station Swapping - As an FM signal
weakens, another more powerfulsignal near the same frequency may begin to play. This is because yourradio is designed to lock onto the clearest signal. If this occurs, select another station with a stronger sig-nal.
o Multi-Path Cancellation - Radio sig-
nals being received from severaldirections can cause distortion or fluttering. This can be caused by a direct and a reflected signal fromthe same station, or by signals from two stations with close frequencies. If this occurs, select another stationuntil the condition has passed. B750B02Y-AAT Using a cellular phone or a two- way radio When a cellular phone is used inside the vehicle, noise may be producedfrom the audio equipment. This does not mean that something is wrong with the audio equipment. In such a case,use the cellular phone at a place as far as possible from the audio equipment.
CAUTION:
When using a communication sys-tem such as a cellular phone or a radio inside the vehicle, a separateexternal antenna must be fitted. When a cellular phone or a radio set is used by using an internal an-tenna alone, it may interfere with the vehicle's electrical system and adversely affect safe operation ofthe vehicle.
WARNING:
Don't use a cellular phone when you are driving. You must stop at a safe place to use a cellular phone.!

B870A01A-GAT Fixed Rod Antenna Your car uses a fixed rod antenna to receive both AM and FM broadcast signals.This antenna is a removable type. To remove the antenna, turn the antenna counterclockwise. To install the an-tenna, turn the antenna clockwise.
CAUTION:
Be sure to remove the antenna be-fore washing the car in an auto- matic car wash or the antenna may be damaged.
o The playback head, capstan and pinch rollers will develop a coating of tape residue that can result in deterioration of sound quality, such as a wavering sound. They should be cleaned monthly using a com-mercially available head cleaning tape or special solution available from audio specialty shops. Followthe supplier's directions carefully and never oil any part of the tape player unit.
o Always be sure that the tape is tightly wound on its reel before in-serting in the player. Rotate a pencilin the drive sprockets to wind up any slack. NOTE: Look at a tape before you insert it. If the tape is loose, tighten it byturning one of the hubs with a pen- cil or your finger. If the label is peeling off, do not putit in the player. It may cause the tape jam in the drive mechanism when you try to eject it.Do not leave tape sitting where they are exposed to hot warm or, high humidity, such as on top of thedashboard or in the player. If a tape is exposed to excessively hot or cold, let it reach a moderatetemperature before putting it in the player.B860A03L

o Do not clean the inner side of the rear quarter glass with an abra-sive type of glass cleaner or use a scraper to remove foreign de- posits from the inner surface ofthe glass as this may cause dam- age to the antenna elements.
