For loading conditions other than those listed below, adjustthe switch position so that the beam level may be the nearest as the condi- tion obtained according to the list.

o If your Hyundai is equipped with a manual transmission, place the shift lever in neutral and depress the clutch pedal fully.
o If your Hyundai has an automatic transmission, place the shift lever in"P" (park).
o To start the engine, insert the igni- tion key and turn it to the "START"position. Release it as soon as the engine starts. Do not hold the key inthe "START" position for more than 15 seconds.
NOTE: For safety, the engine will not start if the shift lever is not in "P" or "N" Position (Automatic Transmission).

o "START" The engine is started in this position. It will crank until you release the key. NOTE: Do not hold the key in the "START" position for more than 15 seconds.
o "ON" When the key is in the "ON" position, the ignition is on and all accessories may be turned on. If the engine is not running, the key should not be left inthe "ON" position. This will discharge the battery and may also damage the ignition system.
o "ACC" With the key in the "ACC" position, some electrical accessories (radio, etc.)may be operated.
o "LOCK" The key can be removed or inserted in this position.To protect against theft, the steering wheel locks by removing the key.STARTING

o Never move the gear selector lever
from "P" or "N" to any other position with the accelerator pedal de- pressed.
o Never move the gear selector lever into "P" when the vehicle is in mo-tion.
o Be sure the car is completely stopped before you attempt to shift into "R".
o Never take the car out of gear and
coast down a hill. This may be ex- tremely hazardous. Always leave the car in gear when moving.
o Do not "ride" the brakes. This can cause them to overheat and mal-function. Instead, when you are driv- ing down a long hill, slow down andshift to a lower gear. When you do this, engine braking will help slow the car.
o Slow down before shifting to a lower gear. Otherwise, the lower gear maynot be engaged.
o Always use the parking brake. Do not depend on placing the transmis-sion in "P" to keep the car frommoving. o Exercise extreme caution when driv-

Turn the overdrive switch backon immediately afterward.
o Optimum vehicle performance and
economy is obtained by smoothlydepressing and releasing the accel- erator pedal.

During the rocking operation the vehicle may suddenly move forward of back-ward as it becomes unstuck, caus- ing injury or damage to nearby people or objects.

2. Transfer shift knob operation By turning the transfer shift knob(4H, 4L), both axles of the vehicle are rigidlyconnected with each other. This im- proves the traction characteristics. 2H

Turn the transfer shift knob from the 2H mode to the 4H mode at speed below 80 km/h. It is not necessary to depress the clutch pedal (ManualTransmission) or put the shift lever into "N(neutral)" position (Automatic Trans- mission). Perform this operation whendriving straight. 4H

o The driving posture should be more
upright and closer to the wheel than usual; adjust the seat to a good position for easy steering and pedal operation.
o Be sure to wear the seat belt.
o Drive carefully when off the road
and avoid dangerous areas.
o 4WD has higher ground clearance and a narrower track to make them capable of performing in a widevariety of off road applications. Spe- cific design characteristics give them a higher center of gravity than ordi-nary cars. An advantage of the higher ground clearance is a better view of the road allowing you toanticipate problems. They are not designed for cornering at the same speeds as conventional 2-wheeldrive vehicles any more than low- slung sports cars are designed to perform satisfactorily under off-roadconditions. If at all possible, avoid sharp turns or abrupt maneuvers.

Driving on dry paved road and highway Select 2H(2WD) to drive on dry paved roads. Especially on dry highway, neverselect the 4H or 4L(4WD). Driving on snowy or icy roads Select the 4H or 4L in accordance with the road conditions, and then gradu- ally depress the accelerator pedal for a smooth start. Driving on sandy or muddy roads Select the 4H or 4L and then gradually depress the accelerator pedal for a smooth start. Keep the pressure on the accelerator pedal constant as pos-sible, and drive at low speed. Climbing sharp grades Select the 4L to maximize use the engine torque. Descending sharp grades Select 4L, use the engine brake and descend slowly. Driving in Water
Select the 4L mode and drive throughslowly. The maximum advisable wading depthis approximately 40cm (15.7 in.). Before driving through water, such as when crossing shallow streams, firstcheck the depth of the water and the bottom of the river bed for firmness. Drive slowly at the speed of 5 km/h(3mph) and avoid deep water. Take all necessary safety measures to ensure that water damage to the en-gine or other vehicle parts does not occur. 40cm

o Do not grip the inside or spokes of
the steering wheel when driving off-road. The steering wheel could jerk and injure your hands. Always firmlyhold the outer steering wheel when you are driving off-road.
o Drive at lower speeds in strong crosswinds. Because of yourvehicle's high center of gravity, its stability will be affected in cross-winds. Slower speeds ensure better vehicle control.
o Check your brake condition once you are out of mud or water. Pressthe brake several times as you move slowly until your feel normal brakingforces return.
o Four-wheel driving on flat and nor-
mal roads can result in a severebinding condition when turning the steering wheel.

21ANTI-LOCK BRAKE SYSTEM (ABS)

C120A02A-AAT (If Installed) The Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) is designed to prevent wheel lock-upduring sudden braking or on hazard- ous road surfaces. The ABS control module monitors the wheel speed andcontrols the pressure applied to each brake. Thus, in emergency situations or on slick roads, ABS will increasevehicle control during braking. NOTE: During ABS operation, a slight pul- sation may be felt in the brake pedal when the brakes are applied. Also, a noise may be heard in the enginecompartment while braking. These conditions are normal and indicate that the anti-lock brake system isfunctioning properly.!WARNING:
ABS will not prevent accidents due to improper or dangerous drivingmaneuvers. Even though vehicle control is improved during emer- gency braking, always maintain asafe distance between you and ob- jects ahead. Vehicle speeds should always be reduced during extremeroad conditions. The braking distance for cars equipped with an anti-lock brakingsystem may be longer than for those without it in the following road con- ditions. During these conditions thevehicle should be driven at reduced speeds.
o Rough, gravel or snow-covered roads.
o With tire chains installed.
o Roads where the road surface is pitted or has different surfaceheight.
The safety features of an ABSequipped vehicle should not betested by high speed driving or cornering. This could endanger the safety of yourself or others.

C160H01A-AAT Use Approved Anti-Freeze in Window Washer System To keep the water in the window washer system from freezing, add an approvedanti-freeze solution in accordance with instructions on the container. Window washer anti-freeze is available fromHyundai dealers and most auto parts outlets. Do not use engine coolant or other types of anti-freeze as thesemay damage the finish. C160I01HP-GAT Don't Let Your Parking Brake Freeze Under some conditions your parking brake can freeze in the engaged posi- tion. This is most likely to happen whenthere is an accumulation of snow or ice around or near the rear brakes or if the brakes are wet. If there is a risk theparking brake may freeze, apply it only temporarily while you put the gear selec- tor lever in "P" (automatic) or in first orreverse gear (manual transmission) and block the rear wheels so the car cannot roll. Then release the parking brake. C160K01A-AAT Carry Emergency Equipment Depending on the severity of the weather where you drive your car, you should carry appropriate emergencyequipment. Low tire inflation pres- sures will result in overheating and possible failure of the tires.Avoid using worn or damaged tires which may result in reduced traction or tire failure. 2. Fuel, engine coolant and engine oil:
High speed travel consumes more fuel than urban motoring. Do not forget to check both engine coolant and engineoil. 3. Drive belt: A loose or damaged drive belt may result in overheating of the engine.
C160J01A-AAT Don't Let Ice and Snow Accumu- late Underneath Under some conditions, snow and ice can build up under the fenders andinterfere with the steering. When driv- ing in severe winter conditions where this may happen, you should periodi-cally check underneath the car to be sure the movement of the front wheels and the steering components is notobstructed.

1. Before towing, check hitch and safety chain connections as well as proper operation of the trailer running lights, brake lights, and turn signals.
2. Always drive your vehicle at a mod- erate speed (Less than 100 km/h).
3. Trailer towing requires more fuel than normal conditions.
4. To maintain engine braking effi-
ciency, do not tow a trailer with thetransmission in fifth gear (manual transmission) or an overdrive gear (automatic transmission).
5. Always secure items in the trailer to prevent load shift while driving.
6. Check the condition and air pres- sure of all tires on the trailer and your car. Low tire pressure can seriously affect the handling. Alsocheck the spare tire.

7. The vehicle/trailer combination is more affected by crosswind and buffeting. When being passed by a large vehicle, keep a constant speed and steer straight ahead. Ifthere is too much wind buffeting slow down to get out of the other vehicle's air turbulence.
8. When parking your car and trailer, especially on a hill, be sure to fol-low all the normal precautions. Turnyour front wheel into the curb, set the parking brake firmly, and put the transmission in 1st or Reverse(manual) or Park (automatic). In addition, place wheel chocks at each of the trailer's tires.
9. If the trailer has electric brakes, start your vehicle and trailer mov-ing, and then apply the trailer brakecontroller by hand to be sure the brakes are working. This lets you check your electrical connection atthe same time.
10. During your trip, check occasion-
ally to be sure that the load issecure, and that the lights and any trailer brakes are still working.
