If a fire breaks out during refuel-ing, leave the vicinity of the vehi-
cle, and immediately contact the
manager of the gas station and
then contact the local fire depart-
ment or 911. Follow any safety
instructions they provide.CAUTION
Make sure to refuel your vehicle
according to the "Fuel require-ments" suggested in section 1.
If the fuel filler cap requires replacement, use only a genuineHYUNDAI cap or the equivalentspecified for your vehicle. An
incorrect fuel filler cap can result in a serious malfunction of thefuel system or emission control
system.
Do not spill fuel on the exterior surfaces of the vehicle. Any typeof fuel spilled on painted surfaces
may damage the paint.
After refueling, make sure the fuel cap is installed securely to pre-
vent fuel spillage in the event ofan accident.

Fuel gauge
The fuel gauge indicates the approxi- mate amount of fuel remaining in the fueltank.
The fuel tank capacity is given in sec-
tion 8.The fuel gauge is supplemented by
a low fuel warning light, which will illumi-
nate when the fuel tank is near empty.
On inclines or curves, the fuel gauge
pointer may fluctuate or the low fuel
warning light may come on earlier than
usual due to the movement of fuel in the tank. The bottom segment will flash as the fuel
level approaching empty.
Trip computer
The trip computer is a microcomputer-
controlled driver information system that
displays information related to driving,
including odometer, tripmeter, distance
to empty, average fuel consumption,
average speed, driving time and ECOON/OFF mode (if equipped) on the dis-
play when the ignition switch is in the ON
position. All stored driving information
(except odometer and distance to empty)
is reset if the battery is disconnected.
WARNING- Fuel gauge
Running out of fuel can expose
vehicle occupants to danger.
You must stop and obtain addition-
al fuel as soon as possible after the warning light comes on or when the
gauge indicator comes close to the
E level.
CAUTION
Avoid driving with a extremely low
fuel level. Running out of fuel couldcause the engine to misfire, damag- ing the catalytic converter.

The odometer is always displayed until
the display is turned off.
Push the TRIP button for less than 1 sec-
ond to select tripmeter, distance to
empty, average fuel consumption, aver-
age speed, driving time and ECO
ON/OFF mode* function as follows:Odometer The odometer indicates the total dis-
tance the vehicle has been driven.
You will also find the odometer useful to
determine when periodic maintenance
should be performed.Tripmeter This mode indicates the distance of indi-
vidual trips selected since the last trip-meter reset.
The meter's working range is from 0.0 to 999.9 miles (0.0 to 999.9 km).
Pressing the TRIP button for more than 1
second, when the tripmeter is being dis-
played, clears the tripmeter to zero (0.0).

Distance to empty This mode indicates the estimated dis- tance to empty based on the current fuelin the fuel tank and the amount of fuel
delivered to the engine. When the
remaining distance is below 30 miles (50
km), “----” will be displayed and the dis-
tance to empty indicator will blink.
The meter’s working range is from 30 to 990 miles (50 to 990 km). Average fuel consumption
This mode calculates the average fuel consumption from the total fuel used and
the distance since the last average con-
sumption reset. The total fuel used is cal-culated from the fuel consumption input.
For an accurate calculation, drive more than 0.03 miles (50 m).
Pressing the TRIP button for more than 1
second, when the average fuel consump-
tion is being displayed, clears the average
fuel consumption to zero (--.-).

NOTICE
 If the vehicle is not on level ground or the battery power has been interrupt-
ed, the “Distance to empty” function
may not operate correctly.
The trip computer may not register
additional fuel if less than 1.6 gallons (6
liters) of fuel are added to the vehicle.
 The fuel consumption and distance to empty values may vary significantly
based on driving conditions, driving
habits, and condition of the vehicle.
 The distance to empty value is an esti-
mate of the available driving distance.
This value may differ from the actual
driving distance available.

Warnings and indicators
All warning lights are checked by turning
the ignition switch ON (do not start the
engine). Any light that does not illuminate
should be checked by an authorized
HYUNDAI dealer.
After starting the engine, check to make
sure that all warning lights are off. If any are still on, this indicates a situation that
needs attention. When releasing the
parking brake, the brake system warning
light should go off. The fuel warning light
will stay on if the fuel level is low.
ECO indicator (if equipped)
The ECO indicator is a system that helps
you to drive economically.
It is displayed if you drive fuel efficiently
to help you improve fuel efficiency.
The ECO indicator (green) will turn on
when you are driving fuel efficiently in
the ECO ON mode.
If you don't want the indicator dis-
played, you can turn the ECO ON
mode to OFF mode by pressing the
TRIP button.
As per ECO ON/OFF Mode operation,
refer to the previous page.
The fuel-efficiency can be changed by the driver's driving habit and road con-dition.
The ECO indicator does not function in P (Park), N (Neutral), and R (Reverse).
Air bag warning light
This warning light will illuminate for
approximately 6 seconds each time you
turn the ignition switch to the ON posi- tion. This light also comes on when the
Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) is
not working properly. If the AIR BAG
warning light does not come on, or con-
tinuously remains on after operating for
about 6 seconds when you turned the
ignition switch to the ON position or start-
ed the engine, or if it comes on while
driving, have the SRS inspected by an
authorized HYUNDAI dealer.
ECO
WARNING
Don't keep watching the indicator
while driving. It will distract you while driving and cause an acci-
dent that results in severe personal
injury.

Shift pattern indicator
(if equipped)
The indicator displays which automatic
transaxle shift position is selected.
Manual transaxle shift
indicator (if equipped)
This indicator informs you which gear is
desired while driving to save fuel.
For example
: Indicates that shifting up to the 3rdgear is desired (currently the shift
lever is in the 2nd gear).
: Indicates that shifting down to the 3rd gear is desired (currently the
shift lever is in the 4th gear).
✽✽ NOTICE
When the system is not working proper-
ly, up & down arrow indicator and Gear
are not displayed.
Charging system warning light
This warning light indicates a malfunction
of either the generator or electricalcharging system.
If the warning light comes on while the
vehicle is in motion:
1. Drive to the nearest safe location.
2. With the engine off, check the genera- tor drive belt for looseness or break-
age.
3. If the belt is adjusted properly, a prob- lem exists somewhere in the electrical
charging system. Have an authorized
HYUNDAI dealer correct the problem
as soon as possible.
Door ajar warning light
This warning light illuminates when a door is not closed securely with the igni-
tion switch in any position.
Tailgate open warning light
This warning light illuminates when the tailgate is not closed securely with the
ignition switch in any position.
Low fuel level warning light
This warning light indicates the fuel tank
is nearly empty. When it comes on, you
should add fuel as soon as possible.
Driving with the fuel level warning light on
or with the fuel level below “E” can causethe engine to misfire and damage the
catalytic converter.

Malfunction indicator (MIL)(check engine light)
This indicator light is part of the Engine
Control System which monitors various
emission control system components. If
this light illuminates while driving, it indi- cates that a potential malfunction has
been detected somewhere in the emis- sion control system. This light will also illuminate when the
ignition switch is turned to the ON posi-
tion, and will go out in a few seconds
after the engine is started. If it illuminates
while driving, or does not illuminate when
the ignition switch is turned to the ON
position, take your vehicle to your near-
est authorized HYUNDAI dealer and
have the system checked.
Generally, your vehicle will continue to be
drivable, but have the system checked by
an authorized HYUNDAI dealer promptly.
ESC indicator (ElectronicStability Control)
(if equipped)
The ESC indicator will illuminate when
the ignition switch is turned ON, but
should go off after approximately 3 sec-
onds. When the ESC is on, it monitors
the driving conditions and under normal
driving conditions, the ESC indicator will
remain off. When a slippery or low trac- tion condition is encountered, the ESC
will operate, and the ESC indicator will
blink to indicate the ESC is operating. If the ESC system malfunctions the indica-
tor illuminates and stays on. Take your
vehicle to an authorized HYUNDAI deal-
er and have the system checked.
ESC OFF indicator (if equipped)
The ESC OFF indicator will illuminate
when the ignition switch is turned ON,
but should go off after approximately 3
seconds. To switch to ESC function off,
press the ESC OFF button. The ESCOFF indicator will illuminate indicating
the ESC is deactivated.
CAUTION
Prolonged driving with the
Emission Control SystemMalfunction Indicator Light illumi-
nated may cause damage to theemission control systems whichcould effect drivability and/or fueleconomy.

If the EmissionControl System
Malfunction Indicator Light illumi- nates, potential catalytic converterdamage is possible which could result in loss of engine power.
Have the Engine Control Systeminspected as soon as possible byan authorized HYUNDAI dealer.

Driving your vehicle
Downshifting
When you must slow down in heavy traf-
fic or while driving up steep hills, down-
shift before the engine starts to labor.
Downshifting reduces the chance of
stalling and gives better acceleration
when you again need to increase your
speed. When the vehicle is traveling
down steep hills, downshifting helps
maintain safe speed and prolongs brake
life.
This vehicle is geared for improved fuel
economy and may need to be driven in a
lower gear when driving up hills or into
high winds. Using top gear is best for fuel
economy, but you should use the best
gear for the road conditions.
Good driving practices
Never take the vehicle out of gear andcoast down a hill. This is extremely
hazardous. Always leave the vehicle in
gear.
Don't "ride" the brakes. This can cause them to overheat and malfunction.
Instead, when you are driving down a
long hill, slow down and shift to a lower
gear. When you do this, engine braking
will help slow down the vehicle.
Slow down before shifting to a lower gear. This will help avoid over-revving
the engine, which can cause damage.
Slow down when you encounter cross winds. This gives you much better con-
trol of your vehicle.
Be sure the vehicle is completely stopped before you attempt to shift into
reverse. The transaxle can be dam-
aged if you do not. To shift into reverse,
depress the clutch, move the shift lever
to neutral, then shift to the reverseposition.
Exercise extreme caution when driving on a slippery surface. Be especially
careful when braking, accelerating or
shifting gears. On a slippery surface,
an abrupt change in vehicle speed can
cause the drive wheels to lose traction
and the vehicle to go out of control.WARNING
Always buckle-up! In a collision, an unbelted occupant is signifi-
cantly more likely to be seriously
injured or killed than a properly belted occupant.
Avoid high speeds when corner- ing or turning.
Do not make quick steering wheel movements, such as sharp
lane changes or fast, sharp turns.
The risk of rollover is greatly increased if you lose control of
your vehicle at highway speeds.
Loss of control often occurs if two or more wheels drop off the
roadway and the driver over-
steers to reenter the roadway.
In the event your vehicle leaves the roadway, do not steer sharply.
Instead, slow down before pulling
back into the travel lanes.
Never exceed posted speed lim- its.

R (Reverse)
Use this position to drive the vehicle
backward. N (Neutral)
The wheels and transaxle are not
engaged. The vehicle will roll freely even
on the slightest incline unless the parking
brake or service brakes are applied.
D (Drive)
This is the normal forward driving posi-
tion. The transaxle will automatically shift
through a 6-gear sequence, providing the
best fuel economy and power.
For extra power when passing another
vehicle or climbing grades, depress the
accelerator fully, at which time the
transaxle will automatically downshift to
the next lower gear (or gears, as appro-
priate).

Always come to a complete stop before
shifting into D (Drive).
CAUTION
The transaxle may be damaged if you shift into P (Park) while thevehicle is in motion.
CAUTION

before shifting into or out of R(Reverse); you may damage the transaxle if you shift into R whilethe vehicle is in motion, except as
explained in “Rocking the vehicle”in this section.
