Shift Positions
The electronic transfer case switch is located on the center
console next to the gear selector lever.
2WD
Rear Wheel Drive High Range - Normal street and
highway driving. Dry hard surfaced roads.4WD Auto
4-Wheel-Drive Auto High Range ± This active on-
demand position makes available optimum traction for a
wide range of conditions, while maximizing driver con-
venience. This position is always in 4-wheel drive mode,
with a normal 42% front axle, 58% rear axle torque split.
The system also anticipates and prevents slip by redirect-
ing torque as necessary, up to 100% to the front or rear
axle, if needed.
4WD Low
4-Wheel-Drive Low Range - Low speed 4-wheel drive
that locks the front driveshaft and rear driveshaft to-
gether and forces the front and rear wheels to rotate at the
same speed. Additional traction and maximum pulling
power for loose or slippery road surfaces only. Do not
exceed 25 mph (40 km/h). This position allows engine
starting without depressing the clutch pedal on vehicles
equipped with a manual transmission. Refer to ªClutch
4WD Control Switch

position, make certain all shift requirements have been
met, wait five (5) seconds, and try the shift again.
2WD to 4WD Auto
Move the 4WD Control Switch to the desired position.
Shifts between 2WD and 4WD Auto can be done with the
vehicle stopped or in motion. If the vehicle is stopped,
the ignition switch must be in the ON position with the
engine either OFF or RUNNING. This shift cannot be
completed if the ignition switch is in the ACC position.
2WD or 4WD Auto to 4WD Low
When shifting into or out of 4WD LOW, some gear noise
may be heard. This noise is normal and is not detrimental
to the vehicle or its occupants.
Shifting can be performed with the vehicle rolling 2-3
mph (3-5 km/h) using the ªPreferred Procedureº or
completely stopped using the ªAlternate Procedures.ºPreferred Procedure
1. With the engine RUNNING, slow the vehicle speed to
2-3 mph (3-5 km/h).
2. Shift the transmission into ªNº (Neutral) (automatic
transmission), or depress the clutch pedal (manual trans-
mission).
3. While still rolling, move the 4WD Control Switch to
the desired position.
4. After the desired position indicator light is ON (not
flashing), shift the transmission into gear (automatic
transmission), or release the clutch pedal (manual trans-
mission).
Alternate Procedure
1. Bring the vehicle to a complete stop.

2. With the ignition switch in the ON position and the
engine OFF or RUNNING, shift the transmission into
ªNº (Neutral) (automatic transmission), or depress the
clutch pedal (manual transmission).
3. Move the 4WD Control Switch to the desired position.
4. After the desired position indicator light is ON (not
flashing), shift the transmission into gear (automatic
transmission), or release the clutch pedal (manual trans-
mission).
NOTE:
²Steps 1 and 2 in the ªPreferred Procedureº and the
ªAlternate Procedureº are requirements for shifting
the transfer case. If these requirements are not met
prior to attempting the shift or while the shift attempt
is in process, then the indicator light will flash, and the
current transfer case position will be maintained. To
retry a shift, move the 4WD Control Switch back to theoriginal position, make certain all shift requirements
have been met, wait five (5) seconds, and try the shift
again.
²The ignition switch must be in the ON position for a
shift to take place and for the position indicator lights
to be operable. If the ignition switch is not in the ON
position, then the shift will not take place, and no
position indicator lights will be on or flashing.
ON-ROAD DRIVING TIPS
Utility vehicles have higher ground clearance and a
narrower track to make them capable of performing in a
wide variety of off-road applications. Specific design
characteristics give them a higher center of gravity than
ordinary cars.
An advantage of the higher ground clearance is a better
view of the road, allowing you to anticipate problems.
They are not designed for cornering at the same speeds as

3. Apply the parking brake.
4. Start the engine.
5. Release the clutch pedal (manual transmission).
6. Rotate the steering wheel
1¤2turn to the left.
7. Press the ªESP OFFº button located in the lower
switch bank below the climate control four times within
twenty seconds. The ªESP/TCS Indicatorº light should
turn on and turn off two times.
8. Rotate the steering wheel back to center and then an
additional
1¤2turn to the right.
9. Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position and then
back to the ON position. If the sequence was completed
properly, the ªESP/TCS Indicatorº light will blink sev-
eral times to confirm HSA is disabled.
10. Repeat these steps if you want to return this feature
to its previous setting.
HDC (Hill Descent Control) ± If Equipped
HDC is only intended for low speed off-road driving.
HDC maintains vehicle speed while descending hills in
off-road driving conditions by applying the brakes when
necessary.
When enabled, HDC senses the terrain and activates
when the vehicle is descending a hill. HDC speed may be
adjusted by the driver to suit the driving conditions. The
speed corresponds to the transmission gear selected.
Gear Approximate HDC Set Speed
1st 1 mph (1.5 km/h)
2nd 3 mph (4.5 km/h)
D (Drive) 7.5 mph (12 km/h)
R (Reverse) 1 mph (1.5 km/h)
N (Neutral) 3 mph (4.5 km/h)
However, the driver can override HDC operation by
applying the brake to slow the vehicle down below the

Towing Tips
Before setting out on a trip, practice turning, stopping,
and backing the trailer in an area located away from
heavy traffic.
If using a manual transmission vehicle for trailer towing,
all starts must be in FIRST gear to avoid excessive clutch
slippage.
Towing Tips Ð Automatic Transmission
The ªDº range can be selected when towing. However, if
frequent shifting occurs while in this range, you will
want to activate the TOW/HAUL feature. Refer to ªAu-
tomatic Transmissionº in this section for additional in-
formation.
NOTE:Using the TOW/HAUL feature while operating
the vehicle under heavy operating conditions will im-
prove performance and extend transmission life by re-
ducing excessive shifting and heat build up. This action
will also provide better engine braking.If you REGULARLY tow a trailer for more than 45
minutes of continuous operation, then change the auto-
matic transmission fluid and filter according to the
interval specified for ªpolice, taxi, fleet, or frequent trailer
towingº in the ªMaintenance Scheduleº in this manual.
Towing Tips Ð TOW/HAUL
To reduce potential for automatic transmission overheat-
ing, press the ªTOW HAULº button when driving in
hilly areas or shift the transmission to Drive position ª2º
on more severe grades. Refer to ªAutomatic Transmis-
sionº in this section for additional information.
Towing Tips Ð Electronic Speed Control (If
Equipped)

Don't use in hilly terrain or with heavy loads.
þWhen using the speed control, if you experience speed
drops greater than 10 mph (16 km/h), disengage until
you can get back to cruising speed.

3. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position.
4. Depress the brake pedal.
5. Shift the transmission to ªNº (Neutral) (automatic
transmission), or depress the clutch pedal (manual trans-
mission).
6. Use the point of a ballpoint pen or similar object to
depress the recessed transfer case Neutral (N) button for
4 seconds. After the shift is complete, and the Neutral (N)
light turns on, release the Neutral (N) button.
7. Start the engine.
8. Shift the automatic transmission into ªRº (Reverse).
9. Release the brake pedal for five seconds and ensure
that there is no vehicle movement.
10. Repeat Steps 8 and 9 with the transmission in ªDº
(Drive) (automatic transmission) or 1st gear (manual
transmission).11. Shut OFF the engine.
12. Turn the ignition switch to the unlocked OFF posi-
tion.
13. Shift the transmission into ªPº (Park) (automatic
transmission), or shift into 4th gear (manual transmis-
sion).
14. Attach the vehicle to a tow vehicle with a tow bar.
15. Disconnect the battery negative cable.
NOTE:
²Steps 1 through 5 are requirements for shifting the
transfer case. If these requirements are not met prior to
depressing the Neutral (N) selection button or while
the shift attempt is in process, then the Neutral (N)
indicator light will flash continuously until all require-
ments are met or until the Neutral (N) button is
released.

²The ignition switch must be in the ON position for a
shift to take place and for the position indicator lights
to be operable. If the ignition switch is not in the ON
position, the shift will not take place and no position
indicator lights will be on or flashing.
²Flashing Neutral (N) position indicator light indicates
that shift requirements have not been met.
CAUTION!
Damage to the transmission may occur if the trans-
mission is shifted into ªPº (Park) with the transfer
case in Neutral (N) and the engine RUNNING. With
the transfer case in Neutral (N), ensure that the
engine is OFF prior to shifting the transmission into
ªPº (Park).
Shifting Out of Neutral (N)
Perform the following procedure to prepare your vehicle
for normal usage:
1. Bring the vehicle to a complete stop.
2. Reconnect the battery negative cable.
3. Place the ignition switch in the LOCK position (if it
has been moved or the engine has been started).
4. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position, but do not
start the engine.
5. Depress the brake pedal.
6. Shift the transmission into ªNº (Neutral) (automatic
transmission), or depress the clutch pedal (manual trans-
mission).
7. Use the point of a ballpoint pen or similar object to
depress the recessed transfer case Neutral (N) button.
Release the Neutral (N) button after the Neutral (N)

indicator light turns off (approximately 1 second). After
the Neutral (N) button is released, the transfer case will
shift to the position identified by the selector switch.
8. Start the engine.
9. Shift the transmission into ªDº (Drive) (automatic
transmission) or into 1st gear and momentarily release
the clutch (manual transmission) to verify that the trans-
fer case has engaged.
10. Set the parking brake.
11. Shift the transmission into ªPº (Park) (automatic
transmission), or into ªNº (Neutral) (manual transmis-
sion).NOTE:
²Steps 1 through 6 are requirements for shifting the
transfer case. If these requirements not met prior to
depressing the Neutral (N) selection button or while
the shift attempt is in process, then all of the mode
position indicator lights will flash continuously until
all requirements are met or until the Neutral (N)
button is released.
²The ignition switch must be in the ON position for a
shift to take place and for the position indicator lights
to be operable. If the ignition switch in not in the ON
position, the shift will not take place and no position
indicator lights will be on or flashing.

WARNING!
²Overfilling the brake fluid reservoir can result in
spilling brake fluid on hot engine parts and the
brake fluid catching fire.
²Use of a brake fluid that has a lower initial boiling
point than the recommended product or a brake
fluid that is unidentified as to FMVSS specifica-
tion may result in sudden brake failure during
hard prolonged braking. You could have an
accident.
Use only brake fluid that has been in a tightly closed
container to avoid contamination from foreign matter or
moisture.
CAUTION!
Do not allow petroleum-base fluid to contaminate
the brake fluid. Seal damage may result.
Clutch Hydraulic System Ð Manual Transmission
(If Equipped)
The clutch hydraulic system is fed by a segregated
volume of fluid within the brake system master cylinder
reservoir. In the event of leakage or wear, use only
manufacturer's recommended brake fluid. Refer to ªFlu-
ids, Lubricants, and Genuine Partsº in this section for the
correct fluid type.
