No passenger should ride inthe cargo area or sit or lie on
folded seatbacks while the
vehicle is moving. All passen-
gers must be properly seated
in seats and restrained prop-
erly while riding.
When resetting the seatback to the upright position, make
sure it is securely latched by
pushing it forward and back-
wards.
To avoid the possibility of burns, do not remove the car-
pet in the cargo area.
Emission control devices
beneath this floor generate
high temperatures.WARNING
After adjusting the seat, always
check that it is securely locked
into place by attempting to
move the seat forward or back-
ward without using the lock
release lever. Sudden or unex-
pected movement of the dri-
ver's seat could cause you to
lose control of the vehicle
resulting in an accident.
WARNING
Do not adjust the seat whilewearing seat belts. Moving the
seat cushion forward may
cause strong pressure on the
abdomen.
Use extreme caution so that hands or other objects are not
caught in the seat mecha-
nisms while the seat is mov-
ing.
Do not put a cigarette lighter on the floor or seat. When you
operate the seat, gas may
gush out of the lighter and
cause fire.

Pre-tensioner seat belt
Your vehicle is equipped with driver's
and front passenger's pre-tensioner
seat belts. The purpose of the pre-
tensioner is to make sure that the
seat belts fit tightly against the occu-
pant's body in certain frontal colli-
sions (or side collisions or rollovers).
The pre-tensioner seat belts can be
activated in certain frontal collisions
as well as certain side impacts and
rollover accidents, where the frontal
collision (or side collisions or
rollovers) is severe enough, together
with the air bags. When the vehicle stops suddenly, or
if the occupant tries to lean forward
too quickly, the seat belt retractor will
lock into position. In certain frontal
collisions (or side collisions or
rollovers), the pre-tensioner will acti-
vate and pull the seat belt into tighter
contact against the occupant's body.
If the system senses excessive seat
belt tension on the driver or passen-
ger's seat belt when the pre-tension-
er activates, the load limiter inside
the pre-tensioner will release some
of the pressure on the affected seat
belt.
✽ ✽
NOTICE
The pre-tensioner will activate not
only in a frontal collision but also in
a side collision or rollover, if the
vehicle is equipped with a side or
curtain air bag.

The front air bag modules are locat-
ed both in the center of the steering
wheel and in the front passenger's
panel above the glove box. When the
SRSCM detects a sufficiently severe
impact to the front of the vehicle, it
will automatically deploy the front air
bags.Upon deployment, tear seams mold-
ed directly into the pad covers will
separate under pressure from the
expansion of the air bags. Further
opening of the covers then allows full
inflation of the air bags.

WARNING
If any of the following condi-
tions occurs, this indicates a
malfunction of the SRS. Have an
authorized Kia dealer inspect
the air bag system as soon as
possible.
The light does not turn on
briefly when you turn the igni-
tion ON.
The light stays on after illumi- nating for approximately 6
seconds.
The light comes on while the vehicle is in motion.
The light blinks when the igni- tion switch is in ON position.

fluid warning light
Parking brake warning
This light is illuminated when the
parking brake is applied with the igni-
tion switch in the START or ON posi-
tion. The warning light should go off
after a few seconds when the park-
ing brake is released.
Low brake fluid level warning
If the warning light remains on, it may
indicate that the brake fluid level in
the reservoir is low.
If the warning light remains on:
1.Drive carefully to the nearest safe location and stop your vehicle.
2.With the engine stopped, check the brake fluid level immediately and
add fluid as required. Then check
all brake components for fluid
leaks.
CAUTION
If the engine is not stoppedimmediately after the engine oilpressure warning light is illumi-nated, severe damage couldresult.
CAUTION
If the oil pressure warning lightstays on while the engine is run-ning, serious engine damagemay result. The oil pressurewarning light comes on when-ever there is insufficient oilpressure. In normal operation, itshould come on when the igni-tion switch is turned on, then goout when the engine is started. If the oil pressure warning lightstays on while the engine is run-ning, there is a serious malfunc-tion.
If this happens, stop the vehicleas soon as it is safe to do so,turn off the engine and checkthe oil level. If the oil level is low, fill the engine oil to the properlevel and start the engine again. If the light stays on with theengine running, turn the engineoff immediately. In any instancewhere the oil light stays onwhen the engine is running, theengine should be checked by anauthorized Kia dealer before thevehicle is driven again.

3.Do not drive the vehicle if leaks arefound, the warning light remains on
or the brakes do not operate prop-
erly. Have the vehicle towed to any
authorized Kia dealer for a brake
system inspection and necessary
repairs.
Your vehicle is equipped with dual-
diagonal braking systems. This
means you still have braking on two
wheels even if one of the dual sys-
tems should fail. With only one of the
dual systems working, more than
normal pedal travel and greater
pedal pressure are required to stop
the vehicle. Also, the vehicle will not
stop in as short a distance with only
a portion of the brake system work-
ing. If the brakes fail while you are
driving, shift to a lower gear for addi-
tional engine braking and stop the
vehicle as soon as it is safe to do so.
To check bulb operation, check
whether the parking brake and brake
fluid warning light illuminates when
the ignition switch is in the ON posi-
tion.D150312AAM
Shift pattern indicator (if equipped)
This indicator displays which auto-
matic transaxle shift position is
selected.
Manual transaxle shift indicator (if equipped)
This indicator informs you which
gear is desired while driving to save
fuel.
For example
: Indicates that shifting up to the3rd gear is desired (currently
the shift lever is in the 2nd
gear).
: Indicates that shifting down to the 3rd gear is desired (current-
ly the shift lever is in the 4th
gear).
WARNING
Driving the vehicle with a warn-
ing light on is dangerous. If the
brake warning light remains on,
have the brakes checked and
repaired immediately by an
authorized Kia dealer.P

Auto control (if equipped)
The rain sensor located on the upper
end of the windshield glass senses
the amount of rainfall and controls
the wiping cycle for the proper inter-
val. The more it rains, the faster the
wiper operates. When the rain stops,
the wiper stops. To vary the speed setting, turn the
speed control knob (1).
If the wiper switch is set in AUTO
mode when the ignition switch is ON,
the wiper will operate once to per-
form a self-check of the system. Set
the wiper to OFF position when the
wiper is not in use.
CAUTION
When the ignition switch is ON
and the windshield wiper switchis placed in the AUTO mode, usecaution in the following situa-tions to avoid any injury to thehands or other parts of thebody:
Do not touch the upper end of the windshield glass facingthe rain sensor.
Do not wipe the upper end of the windshield glass with adamp or wet cloth.

Always drive slowly and turncorners carefully when carry-
ing items on the roof rack.
Severe wind updrafts, caused
by passing vehicles or natural
causes, can cause sudden
upward pressure on items
loaded on the roof rack. This
is especially true when carry-
ing large, flat items such as
wood panels or mattresses.
This could cause the items to
fall off the roof rack and cause
damage to your vehicle or
others around you.
To prevent damage or loss of cargo while driving, check fre-
quently before or while driv-
ing to make sure the items on
the roof rack are securely fas-
tened.

2WD roll tester must be used, per-
form the following: 1.Check the tire pressures recom-
mended for your vehicle.
2.Place the front wheels on the roll tester for a speedometer test as
shown in the illustration.
3.Release the parking brake.
4.Place the rear wheels on the tem- porary free roller as shown in the
illustration.
CAUTION - Mud or snow
If one of the front or rear wheelsbegins to spin in mud, snow, etc. the vehicle can sometimesbe driven out by depressing theaccelerator pedal further; how-ever avoid running the enginecontinuously at high rpmbecause doing so could dam-age the 4WD system.
WARNING - Jacked vehicle
While the full-time 4WD vehicle
is being raised on a jack, never
start the engine or cause the
tires to rotate.
There is the danger that rotating
