NOTICE
Hybrid battery air vent
Do not put foreign objects near the air vent. The hybrid battery (traction
battery) may overheat and be damaged.
Clean the air vent regularly to prevent the hybrid battery (traction battery)
from overheating.
Do not wet or allow foreign substances to enter the air vent as this may
cause a short circuit and damage the hybrid battery (traction battery).
Do not carry large amounts of water such as water cooler bottles in the
vehicle. If water spills onto the hybrid battery (traction battery), the bat-
tery may be damaged. Have the vehicle inspected by any authorized
Lexus dealer or repairer, or another duly qualified and equipped profes-
sional.

Hybrid vehicle driving tips
For economical and ecological driving, pay attention to the following
points:
Using Eco drive mode
When using Eco drive mode, the torque corresponding to the accel-
erator pedal depression amount can be generated more smoothly
than it is in normal conditions. In addition, the operation of the air
conditioning system (heating/cooling) will be minimized, improv-
ing the fuel economy.

Use of Hybrid System Indicator
The Eco-friendly driving is possible by keeping the indicate of
Hybrid System Indicator within Eco area. (P. 222)
When braking the vehicle
Make sure to operate the brakes gently and in good time. A greater
amount of electrical energy can be retained when slowing down.
Delays
Repeated acceleration and deceleration, as well as long waits at
traffic lights, will lead to bad fuel consumption. Check traffic
reports before leaving and avoid delays as much as possible. When
encountering a delay, gently release the brake pedal to allow the
vehicle to move forward slightly while avoiding overuse of the
accelerator pedal. Doing so can help control excessive gasoline
consumption.
Highway driving
Control your speed and keep at a constant speed. Also, before stop-
ping at a toll booth or similar, allow plenty of time to release the

CAUTION
When taking a nap in the vehicle
Always turn the hybrid system off. Otherwise, if you accidentally move the
shift lever or depress the accelerator pedal, this could cause an accident or
fire due to hybrid system overheating. Additionally, if the vehicle is parked
in a poorly ventilated area, exhaust gases may collect and enter the vehicle,
leading to death or a serious health hazard.
When braking
When the brakes are wet, drive more cautiously.
Braking distance increases when the brakes are wet, and this may cause
one side of the vehicle to brake differently than the other side. Also, the
parking brake may not securely hold the vehicle.
If the electronically controlled assist function does not operate, do not fol-
low other vehicles closely and avoid downhill or sharp turns that require
braking.
In this case, braking is still possible, but the brake pedal should be
depressed more firmly than usual. Also, the braking distance will
increase.
The brake system consists of 2 individual hydraulic systems; if one of the
systems fails, the others will still operate. In this case, the brake pedal
should be depressed more firmly than usual and the braking distance will
increase. If this happens, do not continue to drive the vehicle. If the brake
system warning light (red indicator) comes on together with the buzzer
sound while driving, immediately stop the vehicle in a safe place and con-
tact any authorized Lexus dealer or repairer, or another duly qualified and
equipped professional.

Operation of the air conditioning system in Eco drive mode (without navi-
gation system)
Eco drive mode controls the heating/ cooling operations and fan speed of
the air conditioning system to enhance fuel efficiency. (P. 326) To
improve air conditioning performance, adjust the fan speed or turn off Eco
drive mode.
Operation of the air conditioning system in Eco drive mode (with navigation
system)
Eco drive mode controls the heating/cooling operations and fan speed of the
air conditioning system to enhance fuel efficiency. To improve air condi-
tioning performance, adjust the fan speed or turn off Eco drive mode. (Refer
to the “Navigation System Owner’s Manual”.)
For the shift positions
When the “POWER” switch is off, the shift position cannot be changed.
When the “POWER” switch is in ON mode (the hybrid system is not
operating), the shift position can only be changed to N. The shift position
will be changed to N even if the shift lever is shifted to D or R and held
in that position.
When the “READY” indicator is on, the shift position can be changed
from P to D, N or R.
When the “READY” indicator is flashing, the shift position cannot be
changed from P to another position even if the shift lever is operated.
Wait until the “READY” indicator changes from a flashing to a solid
light, and then operate the shift lever again.
The shift position can only be changed to B directly from D.

Parking brake
Parking brake engaged warning buzzer
The buzzer sounds to indicate that parking brake is still engaged (with the
vehicle having reached a speed of 5 km/h [3 mph]). (P. 584)

Before driving
Fully release the parking brake.
Driving the vehicle with the parking brake set will lead to brake components
overheating, which may affect braking performance and increase brake
wear.
To set the parking brake,
fully depress the parking
brake pedal with your left
foot while depressing the

foot.

NOTICE
To prevent damage to the engine and its components
Vehicles with tachometer: Do not let the indicator needle of the tachome-
ter enter the red zone, which indicates the maximum engine speed.
The engine may be overheating if the high coolant temperature warning
light comes on or flashes. In this case, immediately stop the vehicle in a
safe place, and check the engine after it has cooled completely. (P. 6 3 9 )

When the VSC/TRC systems are operating

Sounds and vibrations caused by the ABS, brake assist, VSC and TRC
A sound may be heard from the engine compartment when the hybrid
system is started, just after the vehicle begins to move, if the brake pedal
is depressed forcefully or repeatedly, or 1-2 minutes after the hybrid sys-
tem is stopped. This sound does not indicate that a malfunction has
occurred in any of these systems.
Any of the following conditions may occur when the above systems are
operating. None of these indicates that a malfunction has occurred.
• Vibrations may be felt through the vehicle body and steering.
• A motor sound may be heard after the vehicle comes to a stop.
• The brake pedal may pulsate slightly after the ABS is activated.
• The brake pedal may move down slightly after the ABS is activated.
EPS operation sound
When the steering wheel is operated, a motor sound (whirring sound) may
be heard. This does not indicate a malfunction.
Reduced effectiveness of the EPS system
The effectiveness of the EPS system is reduced to prevent the system from
overheating when there is frequent steering input over an extended period of
time. The steering wheel may feel heavy as a result. Should this occur,
refrain from excessive steering input or stop the vehicle and turn the hybrid
system off. The EPS system should return to normal within 10 minutes.

Window defogger feature
Recirculated air mode may automatically switch to (outside air)
mode in situations where the windows need to be defogged.
Pollen removal mode
In order to prevent the windshield from fogging up when the outside air
is cold, the following may occur:
• Outside air mode does not switch to (recirculated air) mode.
• The air conditioning system operates automatically.
• The operation cancels after 1 minute.
In rainy weather, the windows may fog up. Press .
When outside air temperature is below 0 C (32 F)
The cooling and dehumidification function may not operate even when
is pressed.
Operation of the air conditioning system in Eco drive mode
In the Eco drive mode, the air conditioning system is controlled as follows
to prioritize fuel efficiency:
Engine speed and compressor operation controlled to restrict heating/
cooling capacity
Fan speed restricted when automatic mode is selected
To improve air conditioning performance, perform the following operations:
Adjust the fan speed
Turn off Eco drive mode
Customize the air conditioning control of Eco drive mode. (P. 667)

Burns
Care should be taken to prevent injury if anyone in the following catego-
ries comes in contact with the steering wheel when the heated steering
wheel is on:
• Babies, small children, the elderly, the sick and the physically chal-
lenged
• Persons with sensitive skin
• Persons who are fatigued
• Persons who have taken alcohol or drugs that induce sleep (sleeping
drugs, cold remedies, etc.)
Do not use the heated steering wheel more than necessary. Doing so may
cause minor burns or overheating.
NOTICE
To prevent 12-volt battery discharge
Turn the heater off when the hybrid system is off.
