Before driving
■Regenerative braking
The motor generator converts kinetic energy to electric energy when:
●The accelerator pedal is released.
●The brake pedal is depressed with the shift lever in “D” or “S”.
■Conditions in which the gasoline engine may not stop
The gasoline engine starts and
stops automatically. However, it may not stop auto -
matically in the following conditions:
●During gasoline engine warm-up
●During hybrid battery (traction battery) charging
●During low or high hybrid battery (traction battery) temperature
■Charging the battery
●As the gasoline engine charges the hybrid battery (traction battery), the battery
does not need to be charged from an outside source. However, if the vehicle is
left parked for a long time the hybrid battery will slowly discharge. For this rea -
son, be sure to drive the vehicle at least once every few months for at least 30
min
utes or 10 miles (16 km). If the hybrid battery becomes fully discharged and
you are unable to jump-start the vehicle with the 12 volt battery, contact your
Lexus dealer.
●If the shift lever is in “N”, the hybrid battery (traction battery) will not be
charged. When driving in heavy traffic, operate the vehicle with the shift lever in
“D” or “S” to avoid discharging the battery.
■ During normal driving
The gasoline engine is predomina ntly used. The electric motor
(traction motor) charges the hybrid battery as necessary.
■ When acceler
ating sharply
The power of the hybrid battery (tr action batter

tric motor (traction motor) to th at of the gasoline engine.
■ When br

■After the 12 volt battery has discharged or has been changed or removed
The gasoline engine may not stop even if the vehicle is running on the hybrid battery
(traction battery). If this continues for a few days, contact your Lexus dealer.
■Sounds and vibrations specific to a hybrid vehicle
There may be no engine sounds or vibrat ion even though the vehicle is able to
move. Always put the shift lever in “P” when parked.
The following sounds or vibrations may occu r when the hybrid system is operating,
and are not a malfunction.
●Motor sounds may be heard fr om the engine compartment.
●Sounds may be heard from the hybrid ba ttery (traction battery) behind the rear
seat when the hybrid system starts or stops.
●Sounds may be heard from the transmissi on when the hybrid system starts or
stops.
●Engine sounds may be heard when accelerating sharply.
●Sounds may be heard from the regenerative brake when you press the brake
pedal.
●Vibration may be felt when the gasoline engine starts or stops.
●You may hear cooling fan sounds coming from the air intake vents behind the
rear seat.
■Maintenance, repair, recycling, and disposal
Contact your Lexus dealer regarding main tenance, repair, recycling and disposal.
Do not dispose of the vehicle yourself.

Hybrid battery air vent
There is an air intake vent on the
package tray for the purpose of
cooling the hybrid battery (trac-
tion battery). If the vent becomes
block
ed, the hybrid battery may
overheat, leading to a reduction in
hybrid battery output.
Emergency shut off system
The emergency shut off system blocks off the high voltage current and
stops the fuel pump to minimize the risk of el ectrocution and fuel leakage
when a certain level of impact is detected by the impact sensor. If the
emergency shut off system activates, yo ur vehicle will not restart. To
restart the hybrid system, contact your Lexus dealer.
Energy monitor/consumption screen
You can view the status of your h ybrid system on the multi-information
display ( P. 117) and the touch screen( P. 1 8 2 ). The following images
are examples only, and may vary slightly from actual conditions.

Deactivating or stopping the alarm
Do one of the following:
●Unlock the doors or trunk using the smar
t access system with push-
button start or the wireless remote control.
● St
art the hybrid system. (The alarm wi ll be deactivated or stopped after
a few seconds.)
■Items to check before locking the vehicle
To prevent unintended triggering of the alar m
, check that there is no one in the vehi-
cle, and that all windows and moon roof ar
e closed before locking the vehicle.
The alarm warns of forcible entry using the horn and lights.
To arm the alarm, exit the vehi-
cle, make sure that the doors,
trunk and hood ar
e closed, and
lock all the doors. 
The system will operate auto -
matically once the indicator
changes fr
om lit to flashing.

Driving the vehicle
Starting on a steep incline
Firmly set the parking brake and shift the shift lever to “D”.
Gently depress the accelerator pedal.
Release the parking brake.
The following procedures should be observed to ensure safe driving.

With the brake pedal depressed, shift the shift lever to “D”. 

Gradually release the brake peda l and gently push the accel-
erator pedal to accelerate the vehicle.
■ Stopping
With the shift lever in “D”, push the brake pedal.
If necessary, set the parking brake.
When the vehicle is stopped for an extended period of time, shift the
shift lever to “P”. (

When driving
■Breaking in your new Lexus
To extend the life of the vehicle, the following precautions are recommended to
obser
ve:
●For the first 186 miles (300 km): 
Avoid sudden stops.
●For the first 621 miles (1000 km):
• Do not drive at extremely high speeds.
• Avoid sudden acceleration.
• Do not drive continuously in the low gears.
• Do not drive at a constant speed for extended periods.
■Operating your vehicle in a foreign country
Comply with the relevant vehicle registration laws and confirm the availability of the
co
rrect fuel. ( P. 4 8 2 )
■For efficient use
●Put the shift lever into “D” when driving 
In the “N” position, the gasoline engine operates but electricity cannot be gen -
erated. The hybrid ba tter
y (traction battery) will be discharged requiring unnec-
essary engine power to recharge.
●Drive your vehicle smoothly 
Avoid abrupt acceleration and deceleration. Gradual acceleration and decel -
eration will make more effective use of the traction motor without having to use
g
asoline engine power.
●Avoid repeated acceleration 
Repeated acceleration consumes hybrid battery (traction battery) power,
r
esulting in poor acceleration. Battery power can be restored by driving with
the accelerator pedal slightly released.
●Put the shift lever into “P” when parking 
In the “N” position, the hybrid battery (traction battery) does not recharge. 
Leaving the shift lever in the “N” position for an extended period of the time may
di
scharge the hybrid battery. The vehicle cannot run if the hybrid battery is dis-
charged.
■When starting on an incline

CAUTION
■When starting the vehicle
Always keep your foot on the brake pedal while stopped with the hybrid system
running. This prevents the vehicle from creeping.
■When driving the vehicle
●Do not drive if you are unfamiliar with the location of the brake and accelerator
pedals to avoid depressing the wrong pedal. 
Accidentally depressing the accelerator pedal instead of the brake pedal will
result in sudden acceleration that may lead to an accident that could result in
death or serious injury.
●The driver should pay attention to pedest rians when the vehicle is powered only
by the electric motor (traction motor). Because there is no engine noise, the
pedestrians may misjudge the vehicle’s movement.
●Do not drive the vehicle over or stop the vehicle near flammable materials.
●Do not let the vehicle roll backwards while the shift lever is in a driving position, or
roll forward while the shift lever is in “R”. 
Doing so may cause the hybrid system not to operate or lead to poor brake and
steering performance, resulting in an accident or damage to the vehicle.
●If the smell of exhaust is noticed inside the vehicle, open the windows and check
that the trunk is closed. 
Large amounts of exhaust in the vehicle can cause driver drowsiness and eventu-
ally, death. Have the cause of the problem inspected immediately.

When driving
Starting the hybrid system
Modes can be switched by pressing the power switch when carrying the
electronic key on your person. (The hybrid system can be started in any
mode by operating the switch at the same time as depressing the brake
pedal.)

■Starting the hybrid system
Check that the parking brake is set.
Turn off unnecessary lights and accessories.
Check that the shift lever is set in “P”.
Sit in the driver’s seat and firmly depress the brake pedal.

Press the power switch.
After a few seconds, the
“READY” light will flash and
come on with a beep sound.
The vehicle can move when the
“READ
Y” light is on, even if the
engine is stopped.

When driving
CAUTION
■When starting the hybrid system
Always start the hybrid system while sitting in the driver’s seat. Do not press the
accelerator pedal while starting the hybrid system under any circumstances.
Doing so may cause an accident resu lting in death or serious injury.
■Caution while driving
Do not touch the power switch while driving. 
Pressing and holding the power switch will stop the hybrid system, which may lead
to an accident.
NOTICE
■To prevent 12 volt battery discharge
Do not leave the power switch in “ACC” or “IG-ON” mode for long periods without
the hybrid system on.
■When starting the hybrid system
●Do not race the hybrid system.
●If the hybrid system becomes difficult to start, have the hybrid system checked
immediately.
