Before driving
Closing the fuel tank capAfter refueling, turn the fuel tank
cap until you hear a click. Once
the cap is released, it will turn
slightly in the opposite direction.
â– If the fuel filler door opener is inoperable
â– Fuel types
Use unleaded gasoline. (Octane rating 87 [Research Octane Number 91] or
higher)
â– Fuel tank capacity
Approximately 14.5 gal. (55 L, 12.5 lmp. gal.)
â– Use of ethanol blended gasoline in a gasoline engine
Lexus allows the use of ethanol blended gasoline where the ethanol content is up to
10%. Make sure that the ethanol blended gasoline to be used has a Research
Octane Number that follows the above.
The lever can be used to open the fuel filler
door if the fuel filler door cannot be opened
using the inside switch.

5-2. Steps to take in an emergency
If the hybrid system will not start
Reasons for the hybrid system not starting vary depending on the situation.
Check the following and perform the appropriate procedure:
â– The hybrid system will not start even though the correct starting
procedure is being followed. ( ď‚®P. 1 4 7 )
One of the following may be the cause of the problem:
â—Ź The electronic key may not be functioning properly.* (ď‚®P. 540)
● There may not be sufficient fuel in the vehicle’s tank.
Refuel the vehicle.
â—Ź There may be a malfunction in the immobilizer system.* (ď‚®P. 9 8 )
â—Ź There may be a malfunction in the P position control system.*
(ď‚® P. 150, 508)
â—Ź The hybrid system may be malfunc tioning due to an electrical
problem such as an open circ uit or a blown fuse. However,
depending on the type of malfunc tion, an interim measure is avail-
able to start the hybrid system. (ď‚® P. 4 6 1 )
*: It may not be possible to shift out of the P position.
â– The interior lights and headlights are dim, or the horn does not
sound or sounds at a low volume.
One of the following may be the cause of the problem:
â—Ź The 12-volt battery may be discharged. ( ď‚®P. 543)
â—Ź The 12-volt battery terminal co nnections may be loose or cor-
roded.

â– Recommendation of the use of cleaner burning gasoline
Cleaner burning gasoline, including reformulated gasoline that contains oxygen-
ates such as ethanol or MTBE (Methyl Tertiary Butyl Ether) is available in many
areas.
Lexus recommends the use of cleaner burning gasoline and appropriately blended
reformulated gasoline. These types of gasoline provide excellent vehicle perfor-
mance, reduce vehicle emissions and improve air quality.
â– Non-recommendation of the use of blended gasoline
â—ŹLexus allows the use of oxygenate blended gasoline where the oxygenate con-
tent is up to 10% ethanol or 15% MTBE.
â—ŹIf you use gasohol in your vehicle, be sure that it has an octane rating no lower
than 87.
â—ŹLexus does not recommend the use of gasoline containing methanol.
â– Non-recommendation of the use of gasoline containing MMT
Some gasoline contains an octane enhancing additive called MMT (Methylcyclo-
pentadienyl Manganese Tricarbonyl).
Lexus does not recommend the use of gasoli ne that contains MMT. If fuel contain-
ing MMT is used, your emission control system may be adversely affected.
The malfunction indicator lamp on the instrument panel may come on. If this hap-
pens, contact your Lexus dealer for service.
â– If your engine knocks
â—ŹConsult your Lexus dealer.
â—ŹYou may occasionally notice light knocking for a short time while accelerating
or driving uphill. This is normal and there is no need for concern.

NOTICE
â– Notice on fuel quality
â—ŹDo not use improper fuels. If improper fuels are used, the engine will be dam-
aged.
â—ŹDo not use leaded gasoline.
Leaded gasoline can cause damage to your vehicle’s three-way catalytic convert-
ers causing the emission control system to malfunction.
â—ŹDo not use gasohol other than the type previously stated.
Other gasohol may cause fuel system damage or vehicle performance problems.
â—ŹUsing unleaded gasoline with an octane number or rating lower than the level
previously stated will cause persistent heavy knocking.
At worst, this will lead to engine damage.
â– Fuel-related poor driveability
If poor driveability is encountered after using a different type of fuel (poor hot start-
ing, vaporization, engine knoc king, etc.), discontinue the use of that type of fuel.
â– When refueling with gasohol
Take care not to spill gasohol. It can damage your vehicle’s paint.
