1-5. Refueling
Closing the fuel tank capWhen replacing the fuel tank cap,
turn it until a clicking sound is
heard.
After releasing your hand, the cap
will turn slightly to the opposite
direction.
â– Fuel types
Use unleaded gasoline. (91 Octane rating [Research Octane Number 96] or
higher)
â– Fuel tank capacity (reference)
17.2 gal. (65 L, 14.3 Imp.gal.)
â– When the fuel filler door opener is inoperable
The lever can be used to open the fuel filler
door if the fuel filler door cannot be opened
using the inside switch because the battery is
discharged or for any other reason.

2-1. Driving procedures
â– Driving in the rain
â—ŹDrive carefully when it is raining, because visibility will be reduced, the windows
may become fogged-up, and the road will be slippery.
â—ŹDrive carefully when it starts to rain, because the road surface will be especially
slippery.
â—ŹRefrain from high speeds when driving on an expressway in the rain, because
there may be a layer of water between the tires and the road surface, preventing
the steering and brakes from operating properly.
â– Breaking in your new Lexus
To extend the life of the vehicle, the following precautions are recommended to
observe:
â—ŹFor the first 186 miles (300 km):
Avoid sudden stops.
â—ŹFor the first 621 miles (1000 km):
• Do not drive at extremely high speeds.
• Avoid sudden acceleration.
• Do not drive continuously in the low gears.
• Do not drive at a constant speed for extended periods.
â– Drum-in-disc type parking brake system
Your vehicle has a drum-in-disc type parking brake system. This type of brake sys-
tem needs bedding-down of the brake shoe s periodically or whenever the parking
brake shoes and/or drum are replaced. Have your Lexus dealer perform the bed-
ding down.
â– Operating your vehicle in a foreign country
Comply with the relevant vehicle registration laws and confirm the availability of the
correct fuel. ( ď‚®P. 4 0 9 )
â– Normal characteristics after turning off the engine
Approximately five hours after the engine is turned off, you may hear sound coming
from under the vehicle for several minutes. This is because fuel evaporation leakage
check is performed. It does not indicate a malfunction.

6-1. Specifications
â– Gasoline quality standards
â—ŹAutomotive manufacturers in the US, Europe and Japan have developed a
specification for fuel quality called World-Wide Fuel Charter (WWFC) that is
expected to be applied worldwide.
â—ŹThe WWFC consists of four categories that are based on required emission
levels. In the US, category 4 has been adopted.
â—ŹThe WWFC improves air quality by lowering emissions in vehicle fleets, and
customer satisfaction th rough better performance.
â– Lexus recommends the use of gasoline containing detergent additives
â—ŹLexus recommends the use of gasoline that contains detergent additives to
avoid build-up of engine deposits.
â—ŹAll gasoline sold in the US contains de tergent additives to clean and/or keep
clean intake systems.
â– Lexus recommends the use of cleaner burning gasoline
Cleaner burning gasoline, including reform ulated gasoline that contains oxygen-
ates such as ethanol or MTBE (Methyl Tertiary Butyl Ether) is available in many
areas.
Lexus recommends the use of cleaner burning gasoline and appropriately blended
reformulated gasoline. These types of gasoline provide excellent vehicle perfor-
mance, reduce vehicle emissions and improve air quality.
â– Lexus does not recommend blended gasoline
â—ŹLexus allows the use of oxygenate blended gasoline where the oxygenate con-
tent is up to 10% ethanol or 15% MTBE.
â—ŹIf you use gasohol in your Lexus, be sure that it has an octane rating no lower
than 87.
â—ŹLexus DOES NOT recommend the use of gasoline containing methanol.
â– Lexus does not recommend gasoline containing MMT
Some gasoline contains oc tane enhancing additive called MMT (Methylcyclopen-
tadienyl Manganese Tricarbonyl).
Lexus DOES NOT recommend the use of gasoline that contains MMT. If fuel con-
taining MMT is used, your emission control system may be adversely affected.
The malfunction indicator lamp on the inst rument cluster may come on. If this hap-
pens, contact your Lexus dealer for service.

NOTICE
â– Notice on gasoline quality
â—ŹDo not use leaded gasoline.
Leaded gasoline can cause damage to your vehicle’s three-way catalytic convert-
ers causing the emission control system to malfunction.
â—ŹDo not use gasohol other than that stated here.
Other gasohol may cause fuel system damage or vehicle performance problems.
â—ŹIS250: Use of unleaded gasoline with an octane rating lower than 91 may result
in engine knocking. Persistent knocking can lead to engine damage and should
be corrected by refueling with higher octane unleaded gasoline.
â—ŹIS350: Use of unleaded gasoline with an octane rating lower than 91 may result
in engine knocking and significantly re duced performance. Persistent knocking
can lead to engine damage and should be corrected by refueling with higher
octane unleaded gasoline.
â– Fuel-related poor driveability
If after using a different type of fuel, poor driveability is encountered (poor hot start-
ing, vaporization, engine knoc king, etc.), discontinue the use of that type of fuel.
â– When refueling with gasohol
Take care not to spill gasohol. It can damage your vehicle's paint.
