Occupant restraint systems
Lexus encourages you and your family to take the time to read
Section 1±6 of this Owner's Manual carefully. In terms of
helping you understand how you can receive the maximum
benefit of the occupant restraint systems this vehicle provides,
Section 1±6 of this Owner's Manual is the most important
section for you and your family to read.
Section 1±6 describes the function and operation concerning
seats, seat belts, SRS airbags and child restraint systems of
this vehicle and some potential hazards you should be aware
of. These systems work together along with the overall
structure of this vehicle in order to provide occupant restraint
in the event of a crash. The effect of each system is enhanced
when it is used properly and together with other systems. No
single occupant restraint system can, by itself, provide you or
your family with the equal level of restraint which these
systems can provide when used together. That is why it is
important for you and your family to understand the purpose
and proper use of each of these systems and how they relate
to each other. The purpose of all occupant restraint systems is to help reduce
the possibility of death or serious injury in the event of a
collision. None of these systems, either individually or
together, can ensure that there is no injury in the event of
collision. However, the more you know about these systems
and how to use them properly, the greater your chances
become of surviving an accident without death or serious
injury.
Seat belts provide the primary restraint to all occupants of the
vehicle, and every occupant of the vehicle should wear seat
belts properly at all times. Children should always be secured
in child restraint systems that are appropriate for their age and
size. SRS (Supplemental Restraint System) airbags are, as
their names imply, designed to work with, and be supplemental
to, seat belts and are not substitutes for them. SRS airbags can
be very effective in reducing the risk of head and chest injuries
by preventing contact of the head and chest with interior
portions of the vehicle.
In order to be effective, the SRS airbags must deploy with
tremendous speed. The rapid deployment of the SRS airbags
makes the SRS airbags themselves potential sources of
serious injury if an occupant is too close to an airbag, or if an
object or some part of
his or her body has been placed between
the occupant and the airbag at the time of deployment. This is
just one example of how the instructions in Section 1±6 of this
Owner's Manual will help ensure proper use of the occupant
restraint systems, and increase the safety they can provide to
you and your family in the event of an accident.
Lexus recommends you to read the provisions in Section 1±6
carefully and refer to them as needed during your time of
ownership of this vehicle.

Event data recorder
Your vehicle has computers that monitor and control certain
aspects of your vehicle. These computers assist in driving and
maintaining optimal vehicle performance. Besides storing data
useful for troubleshooting, there is a system to record data in
a crash or a near car crash event. This is called an Event Data
Recorder (EDR).
The SRS airbag sensor assembly contains the EDR. In a crash
or a near car crash event, this device records some or all of the
following information:

Engine speed

Whether the brake pedal was applied or not

Vehicle speed

To what extent the accelerator pedal was depressed

Position of the transmission selector lever

Whether the driver and front passenger wore the seat belts
or not

Driver's seat position

Front passenger's occupant classification

SRS airbag deployment data

SRS airbag system diagnostic data
The information above is intended to be used for the purpose
of improving vehicle safety performance. Unlike general data
recorders, the EDR does not record sound data such as
conversation between passengers. Lexus will not disclose the data recorded in an EDR to a third
party except when:


An agreement from the vehicle's owner (or the leasing
company for a leased vehicle) is obtained

Officially requested by the police or other authorities

Used as a defense for Lexus in a law suit

Ordered by the court
However, if necessary Lexus will:

Use the data for research on Lexus vehicle safety
performance

Disclose the data to a third party for research purposes
without disclosing details of the vehicle owner, and only when it is deemed necessary

Disclose summarized data cleared of vehicle identification
information to a non±Lexus organization for research
purposes

Locking with power door lock switch

To lock all the doors simultaneously, push the power door
lock switch down on the front side. Pushing down on the
rear side will unlock them.
The same switch is also located on the front passenger's side.
Setting the auto door locking and unlocking
functions
You can set the following auto door locking and unlocking
functions.
(a) Locking linked with the shift position (Automatic
transmission only)
All the doors are locked automatically when the selector lever
is moved out of the ªPº position with the engine running.(b) Unlocking linked with the shift position (Automatic
transmission only)
All the doors are unlocked automatically when the selector
lever is moved to the ªPº position with the ignition switch in the
ªONº position.*
NOTE:
*This function is the default setting for new vehicles.
(c) Locking linked with the vehicle speed
All the doors are locked automatically when the vehicle speed
reaches 20 km/h (12 mph) or higher. However, if any door is
unlocked during driving, this auto locking function will not
operate until the unlocked door is opened once.*
NOTE:*This function is the default setting for new vehicles.
(d) Unlocking linked with opening the driver's door
All the doors are unlocked automatically when the driver's door
is opened within 10 seconds after the ignition switch is turned
from ªONº to the ªACCº or ªLOCKº position.*
NOTE:*This function is the default setting for new vehicles.
Setting the functions
1. Close all the doors.
2. Turn the ignition switch to the ªONº position.
3. Within 10 seconds after the ignition switch is turned to the
ªONº position;

WINDSHIELD WIPER AND WASHERSWITCH

To turn the windshield wipers on, move the lever down
until you reach the desired speed setting.
The ignition key must be in the ªONº position.
There are 3 settings:
ªINTº position: Intermittent operation
ªLOº position: Low speed operation
ªHIº position: High speed operation
Twist the interval adjuster upward to increase the wiping
time interval between sweeps, and downward to decrease
it.
The wiper lever must be in the ªINTº position. For mist wiper operations (a single wipe), pull the lever
toward you and release it.
To make the washer squirt, push the button on the end of
the lever.
For information on adding washer fluid, see ªAdding washer
fluidº on page 386.
Some m
odels: If you push the windshield washer switch with
the headlights on, the headlight cleaner operates once
automatically.
In cold weather, warm the windshield with the defroster before
using the washer. This will help prevent icing, which could
block your vision.
The rear window and outside rear view mirror defogger
automatically turns on when you operate the wipers.
NOTICE
Do not operate the windshield wipers if the windshield is dry. It may scratch the glass.
When waxing your vehicle, make sure that the washer nozzles
do not become blocked. If a nozzle becomes blocked, contact
your Lexus dealer to have the vehicle serviced.
NOTICE
If a nozzle becomes blocked, do not try to clear it with
a pin or other object. The nozzle will be damaged.

To turn the wipers on, twist the knob at the end of the lever.
The ignition key must be in the ªONº position.
There are 2 settings:
ªINTº position: Intermittent operation
ªONº position: Low speed operation
To make the washer squirt, twist the knob downward to
position 2.
To make the washer squirt while operating in ªONº
position, twist the knob upward to position 1.
The knob automatically returns from these positions after you
release it. For information on adding washer fluid, see ªAdding washer
fluidº on page 386.
NOTICE
Do not operate the rear window wiper if the rear window
is dry. It may scratch the glass.

ENGINE COOLANT TEMPERATUREGAUGE

Normal range
The gauge indicates the engine coolant temperature when
the ignition switch is on. The engine operating
temperature will vary with changes in weather and engine
load.
If the needle points to the red zone or higher, stop your vehicle
and allow the engine to cool.
Your vehicle may overheat during severe operating conditions,
such as:
 Driving up a long hill on a hot day.
 Reducing speed or stopping after high speed driving.
 Idling for a long period with the air conditioning on in
stop±and±go traffic.
NOTICE
Do not remove the thermostat in the engine cooling
system as this may ca use the engine to overheat. The
thermostat is designed to control the flow of coolant to keep the temperature of the engine within thespecified operating range.
Do not continue driving with an overheated engine.See ªIf your vehicle overheatsº on page 285.

The momentary fuel consumption is calculated and
indicated based on the driving distance and the fuel
consumption with the engine running.
If you are driving at low speeds just before stopping, the
accurate figure may not be shown.
TACHOMETER
SV13016
The tachometer indicates engine speed in thousands of
rpm (revolutions per minute). Use it while driving to
prevent engine over±revving.
Driving with the engine running too fast causes excessive
engine wear and poor fuel economy. Remember, in most
cases the slower the engine speed, the greater the fuel
economy.
NOTICE
Do not let the indicator needle get into the red zone. This
may cause severe engine damage.

(i) Malfunction Indicator Lamp
This lamp comes on when the ignition key is turned to the
ªONº position and goes off after the engine starts. This
means that the warning light system is operating properly.
If the lamp remains on, or the lamp comes on while
driving, first check the followings.
 Empty fuel tank
If the fuel tank is empty, refuel immediately.
 Loose fuel tank cap
If the fuel tank cap is loose, securely tighten it.
These cases are temporary malfunctions. The malfunction
indicator lamp will go off after taking several driving trips.
If the lamp does not go off even after several trips, contact your
Lexus dealer as soon as possible.
If the fuel tank is not empty or the fuel tank cap is not
loose...
 There is a problem somewhere in the engine, emission
control system, electronic throttle control system, automatic
transmission electrical system or warning light system itself.
Contact your Lexus dealer as soon as possible to service the
vehicle.
If engine speed does not increase when the accelerator pedal
is depressed, there may be a problem somewhere in the
electronic throttle control system. At this time, if you depress the accelerator pedal more firmly
and slowly, you can drive your vehicle at low speeds. Have
your
Lexus checked by your Lexus dealer as soon as possible.
Even if the abnorma lity of the electronic throttle control system
is corrected during low speed driving, the system may not be
recovered until the engine is stopped and the ignition key is
turned to ªACCº or ªLOCKº position.
CAUTION
Be especially careful to prevent erroneous pedal
operation.
Emissions Inspection and Maintenance (I/M) programs
Your vehicle may not pass a state emission inspection if the
malfunction indicator lamp remains on. Contact your Lexus
dealer to check your vehicle's emission control system and
OBD (On±Board Diagnostics) system before taking your
vehicle for the inspection.
For details, see ªEmissions Inspection and Maintenance (I/M)
programsº on page 313.
(j) ªABSº Warning Light
The light comes on when the ignition key is turned to the ªONº
position. If the anti±lock brake system and the brake assist
system work properly, the light turns off after a few seconds.
Thereafter, if either of the systems malfunctions, the light
comes on again.
