BEFORE STARTING THE ENGINE
1. Check the area around the vehicle before entering it.
2. Adjust seat position, seatback angle, headrest height and
steering wheel angle.
3. Adjust inside and outside rear view mirrors.
4. Lock all doors.
5. Fasten seat belts.
Remember to check that the service reminder, indicators
function when turning the key to “ON”, and check the fuel
gauge to see that you have sufficient fuel.
IGNITION SWITCH WITH STEERING
LOCK
“START” − Starter motor on. The key will return to the
“ON” position when released. For starting tips, see page 121.
“ON” − Engine on and all accessories on.
This is the normal driving position.
NOTICE:
Do not leave the key in the “ON” position if the engine is
not running. The battery will discharge and the
electronic ignition system / distributor ignition system
could be damaged.
“ACC” − Accessories such as the radio operate, but the
engine is off.
If you leave the key in the “ACC” or “LOCK” position and open
the driver’s door, a buzzer will remind you to remove the key.
“LOCK” − Engine is off and the steering wheel is locked.
The key can be removed only at this position.
To turn the key from “ACC” to the “LOCK” position, you must
put the transmission selector lever in the “P” position.

The indicator light shows the selector switch is in
“SPORT” position. When the indicator light is not on, this
means the selector switch is in “NORMAL” position.
When you turn the ignition key to the “ON” position, the
indicator lights will come on for two seconds.
HEIGHT CONTROL SYSTEM
(U. S. A. ONLY)
The height control system adjusts the vehicle height. This
adjustment is automatically made in response to the
driving conditions to provide good riding comfort and
stability in all driving conditions.
(a) Vehicle height adjustment
Push the selector switch to select one of the following modes:
“NORMAL” mode − For driving on roads with a normal
surface.
“HIGH” mode − For driving on rough roads which are
unsurfaced or continually bumpy.
To change the mode, push the selector switch.
“NORMAL” mode
The vehicle height remains at normal height at all driving
speeds.

STARTING AND DRIVING
133 “HIGH” mode
The vehicle height switches between the following two vehicle
heights according to the driving conditions:
Vehicle height
Driving condition
NormalHigh-speed driving
HighLow and medium speed driving
The indicator light shows the vehicle height is high.
When you turn the ignition key to the “ON” position, the
indicator light will come on for 2 seconds.
(b) Height control ON / OFF switch
OnOff
This switch is located inside the tool storage section on the left
side of the trunk compartment. Sliding the switch to the OFF
position will turn off the height control system. When the switch
is turned off, the “HI” display plinks.
NOTICE:
Before jacking up, towing or hoisting the vehicle, always
turn the height control ON / OFF switch to OFF. If this is
not done, the vehicle height automatic adjustment
function will operate, causing imbalance of the vehicle
and contact of the bumper, etc. with the road surface.
(c) Malfunction warning
If the “HI” display blinks when the height control ON / OFF
switch is turned on, there is a malfunction in the Lexus ride
control system or height control system.

STARTING AND DRIVING
134If the “HI” display is blinking and you suspect a malfunction,
first check that the height control ON / OFF switch is actually
turned on.
If you then confirm that the switch is blinking in the malfunction
mode, have the system checked by your Lexus dealer at the
first opportunity.
TRACTION CONTROL SYSTEM
The traction control system automatically controls
spinning of the rear wheels which may occur when
accelerating on slippery road surfaces, thus maintaining
vehicle stability and driving power to the rear wheels.
When you turn the ignition switch on, this system always
turns on. Leave the system on during ordinary driving so
that it can operate when needed. When traction control is
applied, the “TRAC” indicator / warning light blinks.
Vehicles without headlight cleaner
Vehicles with headlight cleaner
You can turn off the traction control system by pushing
the “TRAC-OFF-” switch. The “TRAC OFF”
indicator / warning light will then come on. Pushing the
“TRAC-OFF-” switch a second time turns the system back
on and extinguishes the “TRAC OFF” indicator / warning
light.
You may hear a slight clicking noise in the engine compartment
when the engine is started. This means that the traction control
system is in the self-check mode, and does not indicate
malfunction. When the traction control system is operating,
you may feel vibration of your vehicle, caused by operation of
the brakes. This indicates the system is functioning properly.
When getting the vehicle out of mud or new snow, etc. the
traction control system will operate to prevent the wheels from
spinning. Even though the accelerator pedal is fully depressed,
the engine speed will be restrained to a certain level.

STARTING AND DRIVING
136Always maintain a safe distance from the vehicle in front of
you. Compared with vehicles not fitted with an anti-lock brake
system, your vehicle requires a longer stopping distance in the
following cases:
Driving on rough, gravel or snow-coverd roads.
Driving with tire chains installed.
Driving on roads where the road surface is pitted or has
other differences in surface height.
Avoid high speeds on wet roads. The anti-lock brake system
cannot eliminate the risk of aquaplaning.
Anti-lock brake system warning light
This light comes on when the ignition key is turned to the
“ON” position. After a few seconds, the light will go off.If either of the following conditions occurs, this indicates a
malfunction somewhere in the parts monitored by the warning
light system. Contact Your Lexus dealer as soon as possible
to service the vehicle.
The light does not come on as described above, or remains
on.
The light comes on while driving.
Even if the anti-lock brake system should fail, the brake system
will still operate conventionally. Have your vehicle checked by
your Lexus dealer as soon as possible.
Drum-in-disc type parking brake system
Your vehicle has a drum-in-disc type parking brake system.
This type of brake system needs bedding-down of the brake
shoes periodically or whenever the parking brake shoes
and / or drums are replaced.
Have your Lexus dealer perform the bedding-down.
