STARTING AND STOPPING THE
ENGINE – PRECAUTIONS
WARNING: Extended idling at highengine speeds can produce very hightemperatures in the engine and exhaustsystem, creating the risk of fire or otherdamage.
WARNING: Do not park, idle or driveyour vehicle on dry grass or other dryground cover. The emission system heatsup the engine compartment and exhaustsystem, creating the risk of fire.
WARNING: Do not start the enginein a closed garage or in other enclosedareas. Exhaust fumes are toxic. Alwaysopen the garage door before you start theengine. Failure to follow this instructioncould result in personal injury or death.
WARNING: Do not use starting fluid, for example ether, in the air intake system.Such fluid could cause immediateexplosive damage to the engine andpossible personal injury.
WARNING: Exhaust leaks may resultin entry of harmful and potentially lethalfumes into the passenger compartment. Ifyou smell exhaust fumes inside yourvehicle, have your vehicle inspectedimmediately. Do not drive if you smellexhaust fumes.
The powertrain control system meets allCanadian interference-causing equipmentstandard requirements regulating theimpulse electrical field or radio noise.
Note:If you use your vehicle regularly abovethe altitude of 7,500 ft (2,286 m) and underthe temperature of -4.0°F (-20°C), it isrecommended to use the alternative engineoil. See Capacities and Specifications(page 495).
If you stop your vehicle and leave the engineidling for long periods, we recommend thatyou do one of the following:
•Open the windows at least 1 in (2.5 cm).
•Set your climate control to outside air.
PUSH BUTTON IGNITION SWITCH
Switching the Ignition Off
When the ignition is on or in accessory mode, press the push button ignition switch oncewithout your foot on the brake pedal.
Switching the Ignition to AccessoryMode

The engine may not start because yourvehicle has a silent key start feature. Thisfuel saving feature allows your vehicle to beready to drive without requiring the gasengine to be running.
The indicator remains on when your vehicleis on, whether the engine is running or not,to indicate your vehicle is capable ofmovement using the electric motor, gasengine or both.
Typically, the engine does not start unlessthe vehicle is cold, a climate control changeis requested or you press the acceleratorpedal.
WHAT IS LOW ENGINE USE MODE
Low engine use mode maintains properengine lubrication at sufficient temperatureand activates when you drive your vehiclewith limited engine operation.
HOW DOES LOW ENGINE USE MODEWORK
When in low engine use mode, your vehicleruns the engine as necessary. When lowengine use mode begins, a message appearsin the information display. If low engine usemode does not complete before you switchyour vehicle off, it continues the next timeyou start your vehicle and the messagereappears.
Note:Pure EV now mode is not availablewhen in low engine use mode.
Note:Cold temperatures affect the enginewarm up time and the low engine use modemay operate more frequently.
Note:An oil change is not required but givesyou the option of not running a low engineuse cycle. Resetting the oil life monitoringsystem suspends the low engine use mode.
PLUG-IN HYBRID ELECTRIC VEHICLE
INFORMATION – TROUBLESHOOTING
PLUG-IN HYBRID ELECTRIC VEHICLEINFORMATION – WARNING LAMPS
Illuminates if your vehicle'selectrical system requires serviceto identify the cause for yourvehicle to shut down or enter a limitedoperating mode. A message may appear inthe instrument cluster display. Have yourvehicle checked as soon as possible.

•Idling: The vehicle is running and in park(P). The engine and, or the high voltagebattery are on.
•Electric driving: The vehicle is runningand in drive (D) or neutral (N). The highvoltage battery provides power to thewheels.
•Hybrid driving: The vehicle is running andin drive (D) or neutral (N). The engine andthe high voltage battery provide powerto the wheels.
•Regenerative braking: The vehicle isrunning in drive (D) and is slowing down. The regenerative braking systemcaptures power and sends it back to thehigh voltage battery.
•Charging: The vehicle is plugged in andthe high voltage battery is being charged.
Engine On Due To
The following conditions help explain whythe engine is on and what you can do toallow all electric operation.
•Drive power: The engine is on due toaccelerator pedal pressure or speedcontrol activation. Reduce pressure onthe accelerator pedal or switch off thespeed control to return to full electricmode.
•High speed: The engine is on becausethe vehicle speed exceeds the level forfull electric operation. Reduce the speedto return to electric operation.
•Heater setting: The engine is on becauseof the heater setting. Reduce or switchoff the heater setting to return to electricoperation.
•Neutral gear: The engine is on becausethe vehicle is in neutral (N). Shift out ofneutral gear to return to electricoperation.
•Engine cold: The engine is on becauseit is cold. The vehicle returns to electricoperation once the engine is sufficientlywarm.
•Battery charging: The engine is on tocharge the high voltage battery. Thevehicle returns to electric operation oncethe battery is sufficiently charged.
•Low gear: The engine is on because thevehicle is in low (L). Shift out of low (L) toreturn to electric operation.
•Normal operation: The engine is on tooptimize vehicle operation. The vehiclereturns to electric operation whenpossible.
•Low use: The engine is on to maintainengine oil quality. The vehicle returns toelectric operation when low engine usemode is complete. See How Does LowEngine Use Mode Work (page 216).
•Engine braking active: The engine is onto provide increased powertrain braking. This can occur when you turn on thegrade assist feature, when speed controlis on or when driving with your foot offthe accelerator pedal. Turning off gradeassist or speed control may allow thevehicle to return to electric operation.
