Note:You may have to press the pushbutton ignition switch twice to switch theignition on.
Start: Starts the engine.
•Press the brake pedal, and then pressthe button for any length of time. Anindicator light on the button illuminateswhen then ignition is on and when theengine starts.
STARTING A GASOLINE ENGINE
When you start the engine, the idle speedincreases, this helps to warm up the engine.If the engine idle speed does not slow downautomatically, have your vehicle checked byan authorized dealer.
Note:If your vehicle is equipped with remotestart, you can start your vehicle with theremote, and then drive away by pressing thebrake pedal and pushing a button on thetransmission. This allows you to drive awaywithout pressing the engine start button.
Before starting the engine, check thefollowing:
•Make sure all occupants have fastenedtheir safety belts.
•Make sure the headlamps and electricalaccessories are off.
•Make sure the parking brake is on.
•Put the transmission in P.
Note:Do not touch the accelerator pedal.
1. Fully press the brake pedal.
2. Press the button.
The system does not function if:
•The key frequencies are jammed.
•The key battery has no charge.
If you are unable to start the engine, do thefollowing:
1. Open the center console lid.
2. Slide the remote into the back-up slot.
3. With the key in this position, press thebrake pedal, then the START button toswitch the ignition on and start yourvehicle.
Fast Restart
The fast restart feature allows you to restartthe engine within 20 seconds of switching itoff, even if a valid key is not present.

•You can reset the timer by interactingwith your vehicle (such as pressing thebrake pedal or accelerator pedal).
•You can temporarily switch off theshutdown feature any time the ignition ison (for the current ignition cycle only).Use the information display to do so. SeeInformation Displays (page 109).
•During the countdown before engineshutdown, you are prompted to press OKor RESET (depending on your type ofinformation display) to temporarily switchthe feature off (for the current ignitioncycle only).
Stopping the Engine When YourVehicle is Stationary
1. Put the transmission in position P.
2. Press the button once.
3. Apply the parking brake.
Note:This switches off the ignition, allelectrical circuits, warning lamps andindicators.
Note:If the engine is idling for 30 minutes,the ignition and engine automatically shutdown.
Stopping the Engine When YourVehicle is Moving
WARNING
Switching off the engine when thevehicle is still moving will result in aloss of brake and steering assistance. Thesteering will not lock, but higher effort willbe required. When the ignition is switchedoff, some electrical circuits, including airbags, warning lamps and indicators may alsobe off. If the ignition was turned offaccidentally, you can shift into neutral (N) andre-start the engine.
1. Put the transmission in position N anduse the brakes to bring your vehicle to asafe stop.
2. When your vehicle has stopped, put thetransmission in position P.
3. Press and hold the button for onesecond, or press it three times within twoseconds.
4. Apply the parking brake.
Guarding Against Exhaust Fumes
WARNING
If you smell exhaust fumes inside yourvehicle, have your vehicle checked byyour authorized dealer immediately. Do notdrive your vehicle if you smell exhaust fumes.Carbon monoxide is present in exhaustfumes. Take precautions to avoid itsdangerous effects.
Important Ventilating Information
If you stop your vehicle and the leave theengine idling for long periods, werecommend that you do one of the following:
•Open the windows at least 1 in (2.5 cm).
•Set your climate control to outside air.

AUTO-START-STOP (If Equipped)
WARNINGS
Always fully apply the parking brake.Make sure you shift into park (P) forvehicles with an automatic transmission.Switch the ignition off and remove the keywhenever you leave your vehicle.
Before opening the hood or performingany maintenance, fully apply theparking brake, shift into park (P) or neutral(N) and switch the ignition off.
Always switch the ignition off beforeleaving the vehicle. If the ignition isswitched on an automatic restart may occurat any time.
The system may require the engine toautomatically restart when theauto-start-stop indicator illuminates green orflashes amber. Failure to follow thisinstruction could result in personal injury.
The system helps reduce fuel consumptionby automatically shutting off and restartingthe engine while your vehicle is stopped.The engine will restart automatically whenyou release the brake pedal. In somesituations, your vehicle may restartautomatically, for example:
•To maintain interior comfort
•To recharge the battery
Note:Power assist steering is turned offwhen the engine is off.
The Auto-Start-Stop system status isavailable at a glance within the informationdisplay. See Information Displays (page109).
Enabling Auto-Start-Stop
The system is automatically enabled everytime you start your vehicle if the followingconditions are met:
•The Auto-Start-Stop button is not pressed(not illuminated).
•Your vehicle exceeds an initial speed of3 mph (5 km/h) after the vehicle has beeninitially started.
•Your vehicle is stopped.
•Your foot is on the brake pedal.
•The transmission is in drive (D).
•The driver's door is closed.
•There is adequate brake vacuum.
•The interior compartment has beencooled or warmed to an acceptable level.
•The front windshield defroster is off.
•The steering wheel is not turned rapidlyor is not at a sharp angle.
•The vehicle is not on a steep road grade.
•The battery is within optimal operatingconditions (battery state of charge andtemperature in range).
•The engine coolant is at operatingtemperature.
•Elevation is below approximately10,000 ft (3,048 m).
•Ambient temperature is moderate.
The green Auto-Start-Stopindicator light on the instrumentcluster will illuminate to indicatewhen the automatic engine stop occurs.

6. When you finish refueling slightly raisethe fuel pump nozzle and slowly removeit.
7. Fully close the fuel filler door.
Do not attempt to start the engine if you havefilled the fuel tank with incorrect fuel.Incorrect fuel use could cause damage notcovered by the vehicle Warranty. Have yourvehicle immediately checked.
Refueling System Warning (If Equipped)
If the fuel tank filler valve does not fully close,a message may appear in the informationdisplay.
Message
Check Fuel Fill Inlet
If the message appears, do the following:
1.Stop your vehicle as soon as it is safe todo so and switch the engine off.
2. Shift into park (P) or neutral (N).
3. Apply the parking brake.
4. Fully open the fuel filler door.
5. Check the fuel tank filler valve for anydebris that may be restricting itsmovement.
6. Remove any debris from the fuel tankfiller valve.
7.Fully insert a fuel pump nozzle or the fuelfiller funnel provided with your vehicleinto the fuel filler pipe. See Fuel FillerFunnel Location (page 165). This actionshould dislodge any debris that may bepreventing the fuel tank filler valve fromfully closing.
8.Remove the fuel pump nozzle or fuel fillerfunnel from the fuel filler pipe.
9. Fully close the fuel filler door.
If this action corrects the problem themessage may not immediately reset. If themessage remains and a warning lampilluminates, have your vehicle checked assoon as possible.
FUEL CONSUMPTION
The advertised capacity is the maximumamount of fuel that you can add to the fueltank after running out of fuel. Included in theadvertised capacity is an empty reserve. Theempty reserve is an unspecified amount offuel that remains in the fuel tank when thefuel gauge indicates empty.
Note:The amount of fuel in the emptyreserve varies and should not be relied uponto increase driving range.

AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION
WARNINGS
Always fully apply the parking brakeand make sure you shift into park (P).Failure to follow this instruction could resultin personal injury or death.
Do not apply the brake pedal andaccelerator pedal simultaneously.Applying both pedals simultaneously formore than a few seconds will limit engineperformance, which may result in difficultymaintaining speed in traffic and could leadto serious injury.
Note:Under certain conditions, you may notbe able to shift out of park (P) unless theintelligent access key is inside the vehicle.
Push Button Shift Transmission
Your vehicle is equipped with an electronictransmission. The shift buttons are locatedon the instrument panel next to thetouchscreen. The gears are selected bypressing and releasing the PRNDS buttons.
Every time a gear is selected, the selectedbutton will light up. You will also see the gearselected appear in the instrument cluster.
Understanding the Positions of yourElectronic Transmission
Note:Always come to a complete stopbefore putting your vehicle into and out ofpark (P).
Putting your vehicle in gear:
1. Fully press down the brake pedal.
2. Press and release the button on theinstrument panel of the gear you want toselect.

WARNINGS
When doing this procedure, you needto take the transmission out of park (P)which means your vehicle can roll freely. Toavoid unwanted vehicle movement, alwaysfully apply the parking brake prior to doingthis procedure. Use wheels chocks ifappropriate.
If the parking brake is fully released,but the brake warning lamp remainsilluminated, the brakes may not be workingproperly. Have your vehicle checked as soonas possible.
Note:See your authorized dealer as soonas possible if this procedure is used.
Note:For some markets this feature isdisabled.
Note:This feature will only function if your12-volt battery has power. If vehicle batteryvoltage is not sufficient, an external 12-voltpower source (for example, jumper cables,battery charger or jump pack) may berequired to function the interlock overrideswitch.
Use the brake-shift interlock override tomove your transmission from the parkposition in the event of an electricalmalfunction. If your vehicle has a deadbattery, an external power source will berequired.
1. Apply the parking brake and turn yourignition off before performing thisprocedure.
2. Locate your brake-shift interlock accessslot. The slot is located in your centerconsole storage bin. The access slotdoes not have a label.
Note:Make sure that you correctly identifythe access hole as not to damage the mediahub.
3. Using a tool, press and hold the brakeshift interlock switch. The shift buttonson the instrument panel will flash whenyour vehicle is in override mode.
4. With the override switch still held, pressthe neutral button (N) to shift from park.
5. Release the override button.
6.Your vehicle will remain in Stay in Neutralmode for wrecker towing purposes orcan be shifted to the desired gear anddriven (if possible).
7. Release the parking brake.

GENERAL INFORMATION
Note: Occasional brake noise is normal. Ifa metal-to-metal, continuous grinding orcontinuous squeal sound is present, thebrake linings may be worn-out and anauthorized dealer should check them. If thevehicle has continuous vibration or shudderin the steering wheel while braking, anauthorized dealer should check your vehicle.
Note:Brake dust may accumulate on thewheels, even under normal drivingconditions. Some dust is inevitable as thebrakes wear and does not contribute tobrake noise. See Cleaning the Wheels(page 312).
See Warning Lamps andIndicators (page 104).
Wet brakes result in reduced brakingefficiency. Gently press the brake pedal afew times when driving from a car wash orstanding water to dry the brakes.
Brake Over Accelerator
In the event the accelerator pedal becomesstuck or entrapped, apply steady and firmpressure to the brake pedal to slow thevehicle and reduce engine power. If youexperience this condition, apply the brakesand bring your vehicle to a safe stop. Switchthe engine off, move the transmission to park(P) and apply the parking brake. Inspect theaccelerator pedal and the area around it forany items or debris that may be obstructingits movement.If none are found and thecondition persists, have your vehicle towedto the nearest authorized dealer.
Emergency Brake Assist
Emergency brake assist detects when youbrake heavily by measuring the rate at whichyou press the brake pedal. It providesmaximum braking efficiency as long as youpress the pedal. Emergency brake assistcan reduce stopping distances in criticalsituations.
Anti-lock Brake System
This system helps you maintain steeringcontrol during emergency stops by keepingthe brakes from locking.
This lamp momentarily illuminateswhen you switch the ignition on. Ifthe light does not illuminate duringstart up, remains on or flashes, the anti-lockbraking system may be disabled. Have thesystem checked by an authorized dealer. Ifthe anti-lock brake system is disabled,normal braking is still effective.
If the brake warning lampilluminates with the parking brakereleased, have your brake systemserviced immediately.
It also illuminates momentarily when youswitch the ignition on to confirm the lamp isfunctional. If it does not illuminate when youswitch the ignition on, or begins to flash atany time, have the system checked by anauthorized dealer.

HINTS ON DRIVING WITH ANTI-
LOCK BRAKES
The anti-lock braking system does noteliminate the risks when:
•You drive too closely to the vehicle infront of you.
•Your vehicle is hydroplaning.
•You take corners too fast.
•The road surface is poor.
Note: If the system activates, the brakepedal may pulse and may travel further. Maintain pressure on the brake pedal. Youmay also hear a noise from the system. Thisis normal.
ELECTRIC PARKING BRAKE
The electric parking brake replaces theconventional handbrake. The operatingswitch is located on the instrument panel tothe left of the steering wheel.
WARNING
Always set the parking brake and leaveyour vehicle with the transmission inposition P.
Note:When you apply the electric parkingbrake in certain conditions, for example ona steep hill, the electric parking brake mayreapply the brakes within three to tenminutes.
Note:You may notice various noises whenyou apply and release the electric parkingbrake. This is normal and no cause forconcern.
Applying the electric parking brake
WARNING
The brake system warning lamp willflash during an electric brake apply. Ifthe brake system warning lamp continues toflash there could be a problem with yourelectric parking brake. Have the systemchecked by an authorized dealer as soon aspossible.
Note:The brake system warning lamp willilluminate for ten seconds if you have turnedthe ignition off after the electric parkingbrake has been applied, or the electricparking brake has been applied after theignition has been turned off.
Note:The electric parking brake will notautomatically apply. You must apply theelectric parking brake using the electricparking brake switch.
Pull the switch to apply the electric parkingbrake.

The brake system warning lamp will flash forapproximately 2 seconds then illuminate toconfirm that the electric parking brake hasbeen applied. See Instrument Cluster (page103).
Applying the electric parking brake
when the vehicle is moving
WARNINGS
Applying the electric parking brakewhile moving will result in use of theanti-lock braking system. Do not use theelectric parking brake system when thevehicle is moving unless the normal brakesystem is unable to stop the vehicle.
With the exception of emergencyconditions (for example, the brakepedal does not work or is blocked), do notapply the electric parking brake while thevehicle is moving. On bends, or poor roadsurfaces or weather conditions, emergencybraking can cause the vehicle to skid out ofcontrol or off the road.
If you apply the electric parking brake whenyour vehicle is moving, the brake systemwarning lamp will illuminate and a warningchime will sound. See Instrument Cluster(page 103).
If your vehicle speed is above 4 mph (6km/h), the braking force is applied as longas the switch is applied. Release or press theswitch or press the accelerator pedal to stopthe braking force.
Releasing the electric parking brake
You can release the electric parking brakeeither manually by pressing the bottom ofthe switch or automatically.
Manual release
WARNING
If the brake system warning lightremains illuminated or flashes after youhave released the parking brake, there couldbe a problem with you braking system. Havethe system checked by an authorized dealeras soon as possible.
You can manually release the electric parkingbrake by turning the ignition on, pressing thebrake pedal and then pressing the electricparking brake switch down.
When the electric parking brake is released,the brake system warning lamp will turn off.
Driving with a Trailer
Depending on the grade and the weight ofthe trailer, your vehicle and trailer may rollbackwards slightly when you start on a slope.To prevent this from happening, do thefollowing:

1.Pull the switch and hold it in this position.
2. Drive your vehicle, then release theswitch when you notice that the enginehas developed sufficient driving force.
Automatic release - drive away release
Your vehicle will automatically release theparking brake if all of the following conditionsexist:
•The driver door is closed.
•The vehicle is accelerated.
•There are no faults detected in theparking brake system.
Note:The driver door must be closed andthe driver safety belt must be fastenedbefore this feature will operate.
Note:If the electric parking brake warninglamp stays illuminated, the electric parkingbrake will not automatically release. Youmust release the electric parking brake usingthe electric parking brake switch.
Note:The engine must be running and theaccelerator pedal must be pressed beforethe drive away release feature will operate.
The brake system warning lamp will go offto confirm that the electric parking brake hasbeen released.
Note:The electric parking brake drive awayrelease makes starting on a hill easier. Thisfeature will release the parking brakeautomatically when the vehicle has sufficientdrive force to move up the hill. To assuredrive away release when starting uphill,press the accelerator pedal quickly.
Battery With No Charge
WARNING
You will not be able to apply or releasethe electric parking brake if the batteryis low or has no charge.
If the battery is low or has no charge, usejumper cables and a booster battery.
HILL START ASSIST
WARNINGS
The system does not replace theparking brake. When you leave yourvehicle, always apply the parking brake andshift the transmission into park (P) forautomatic transmission or first gear formanual transmission.
You must remain in your vehicle whenthe system turns on. At all times, youare responsible for controlling your vehicle,supervising the system and intervening, ifrequired. Failure to take care may result inthe loss of control of your vehicle, seriouspersonal injury or death.
Note:If the engine is revved excessively, orif a malfunction is detected, the system willbe deactivated.
The system makes it easier to pull awaywhen your vehicle is on a slope without theneed to use the parking brake.
