Service Data Recording
Service data recorders in your vehicle arecapable of collecting and storing diagnosticinformation about your vehicle. Thispotentially includes information about theperformance or status of various systemsand modules in the vehicle, such as engine,throttle, steering or brake systems. In orderto properly diagnose and service yourvehicle, Ford Motor Company (Ford ofCanada in Canada), and service and repairfacilities may access or share among themvehicle diagnostic information receivedthrough a direct connection to your vehiclewhen diagnosing or servicing your vehicle.Additionally, Ford Motor Company (Ford ofCanada, in Canada) may, where permittedby law, use vehicle diagnostic informationfor vehicle improvement or with otherinformation we may have about you, (forexample, your contact information), to offeryou products or services that may interestyou. Data may be provided to our serviceproviders such as part suppliers that mayhelp diagnose malfunctions, and who are
similarly obligated to protect data. We retainthis data only as long as necessary toperform these functions or to comply withlaw. We may provide information whererequired in response to official requests tolaw enforcement or other governmentauthorities or third parties acting with lawfulauthority or court order, and such informationmay be used in legal proceedings. For U.S.only (if equipped), if you choose to useconnected apps and services, such as SYNCVehicle Health Report or MyFord Mobile App,you consent that certain diagnosticinformation may also be accessedelectronically by Ford Motor Company andFord authorized service facilities, and thatthe diagnostic information may be used toprovide services to you, personalizing yourexperience, troubleshoot, and to improveproducts and services and offer you productsand services that may interest you, wherepermitted by law. Event Data Recording
This vehicle is equipped with an event datarecorder. The main purpose of an eventdata recorder is to record, in certain crashor near crash-like situations, such as anairbag deployment or hitting a roadobstacle; this data will assist inunderstanding how a vehicle’s systemsperformed. The event data recorder isdesigned to record data related to vehicledynamics and safety systems for a shortperiod of time, typically 30 seconds or less.
The event data recorder in this vehicle isdesigned to record such data as:
•How various systems in your vehiclewere operating;
•Whether or not the driver andpassenger safety belts werebuckled/fastened;

•How far (if at all) the driver wasdepressing the accelerator and/or thebrake pedal; and
•How fast the vehicle was traveling; and
•Where the driver was positioning thesteering wheel.
This data can help provide a betterunderstanding of the circumstances inwhich crashes and injuries occur.
Note:Event data recorder data is recordedby your vehicle only if a non-trivial crashsituation occurs; no data is recorded by theevent data recorder under normal drivingconditions and no personal data orinformation (e.g., name, gender, age, andcrash location) is recorded (see limitationsregarding 911 Assist and Traffic, directionsand Information privacy below). However,parties, such as law enforcement, couldcombine the event data recorder data withthe type of personally identifying dataroutinely acquired during a crashinvestigation.
To read data recorded by an event datarecorder, special equipment is required,and access to the vehicle or the event datarecorder is needed. In addition to thevehicle manufacturer, other parties, suchas law enforcement, that have such specialequipment, can read the information if theyhave access to the vehicle or the event datarecorder. Ford Motor Company and Fordof Canada do not access event datarecorder information without obtainingconsent, unless pursuant to court order orwhere required by law enforcement, othergovernment authorities or other thirdparties acting with lawful authority. Otherparties may seek to access the informationindependently of Ford Motor Company andFord of Canada.
Note:Including to the extent that any lawpertaining to Event Data Recorders appliesto SYNC or its features, please note thefollowing: Once 911 Assist (if equipped) isenabled (set ON), 911 Assist may, throughany paired and connected cell phone,disclose to emergency services that thevehicle has been in a crash involving thedeployment of an airbag or, in certainvehicles, the activation of the fuel pumpshut-off. Certain versions or updates to 911Assist may also be capable of being usedto electronically or verbally provide to 911operators the vehicle location (such aslatitude and longitude), and/or other detailsabout the vehicle or crash or personalinformation about the occupants to assist911 operators to provide the mostappropriate emergency services. If you donot want to disclose this information, donot activate the 911 Assist feature. SeeSYNC™ 3 (page 368).

Additionally, when you connect to Traffic,Directions and Information (if equipped,U.S. only), the service uses GPS technologyand advanced vehicle sensors to collectthe vehicle’s current location, traveldirection, and speed (“vehicle travelinformation”), only to help provide you withthe directions, traffic reports, or businesssearches that you request. If you do notwant Ford or its vendors to receive thisinformation, do not activate the service. The Personal Safety System provides animproved overall level of frontal crashprotection to front seat occupants and isdesigned to help further reduce the risk ofairbag-related injuries. The system is able toanalyze different occupant conditions andcrash severity before activating theappropriate safety devices to help betterprotect a range of occupants in a variety offrontal crash situations.
The Vehicle Personal Safety System consistsof:
•Driver and passenger dual-stage airbagsupplemental restraints.
•Front seat outboard seatbelts withpretensioners, energy managementretractors and seatbelt usage sensors.
•Driver seat position sensor.
•Passenger seat position sensor.
•Front passenger sensing system.
•Passenger airbag off and on indicatorlamp.
•Front crash severity sensors.
•Restraints control module with impactand safing sensors.
•Restraint system warning lamp and tone.
•The electrical wiring for the airbags, crashsensors, seatbelt pretensioners, frontseatbelt usage sensors, driver seatposition sensor, front passenger sensingsystem and indicator lights.
How Does the Personal Safety SystemWork?
The Personal Safety System can adapt thedeployment strategy of the safety devicesaccording to crash severity and occupantconditions. A collection of crash andoccupant sensors provides information tothe restraints control module. During a crash,the restraints control module may deploy theseatbelt pretensioners, one or both stagesof the dual-stage airbags based on crashseverity and occupant conditions.

FRONT PASSENGER SENSING
SYSTEM
WARNINGS
Even with advanced restraints systems,properly restrain children 12 and underin a rear seating position. Failure to followthis could seriously increase the risk of injuryor death.
Sitting improperly, out of position orwith the seatback reclined too far cantake weight off the seat cushion and affectthe decision of the passenger sensingsystem, resulting in serious injury or deathin the event of a crash. Always sit uprightagainst your seat back, with your feet on thefloor.
Any alteration or modification to thefront passenger seat may affect theperformance of the front passenger sensingsystem. This could seriously increase the riskof injury or death.
This system works with sensors that are partof the front passenger seat and seatbelt todetect the presence of a properly-seatedoccupant and determine if the frontpassenger frontal airbag should be enabled(may inflate) or not.
The front passenger sensing system uses apassenger airbag status indicator thatilluminates indicating that the frontpassenger frontal airbag is either ON(enabled) or OFF (disabled).
The indicator lamp is in the center stack ofthe instrument panel.
Note:The passenger airbag status indicatorOFF and ON indicator lamps illuminate fora short period of time when you first switchthe ignition on to confirm they are functional.
The front passenger sensing system isdesigned to disable (will not inflate) the frontpassenger frontal airbag when the frontpassenger seat is unoccupied, or a rearfacing infant seat, a forward-facing childrestraint, or a booster seat is detected. Evenwith this technology, parents are stronglyencouraged to always properly restrainchildren in the rear seat. The sensor alsoturns off the passenger front airbag andseat-mounted side airbag when thepassenger seat is empty.
•When the front passenger sensingsystem disables (will not inflate) the frontpassenger frontal airbag, the passengerairbag status indicator illuminates theOFF lamp and stays lit to remind you thatthe front passenger frontal airbag isdisabled.
•If you have installed the child restraintand the passenger airbag status indicatorilluminates the ON lamp, then switch thevehicle off, remove the child restraintfrom the vehicle and reinstall the restraintfollowing the child restraintmanufacturer's instructions.

The front passenger sensing system isdesigned to enable (may inflate) the frontpassenger frontal airbag anytime the systemsenses that a person of adult size is sittingproperly in the front passenger seat.
•When the front passenger sensingsystem enables the front passengerfrontal airbag (may inflate), the passengerairbag status indicator illuminates the ONlamp and remains illuminated.
If a person of adult size is sitting in the frontpassenger seat, but the airbag off indicatorlamp is lit, it is possible that the person is notsitting properly in the seat. If this happens:
•Switch the vehicle off and ask the personto place the seat backrest in an uprightposition.
•Have the person sit upright in the seat,centered on the seat cushion, with theperson’s legs comfortably extended.
•Restart the vehicle and have the personremain in this position for about twominutes. This allows the system to detectthat person and enable the passengerfrontal airbag.
•If the indicator OFF lamp remains lit evenafter this, advise the person to ride in therear seat.

Note:When the passenger airbag statusindicator OFF light illuminates, the passenger(seat mounted) side airbag may be disabledto avoid the risk of airbag deploymentinjuries.
After all occupants have adjusted their seatsand put on seatbelts, it is very important thatthey continue to sit properly. A properlyseated occupant sits upright, leaning againstthe seat backrest, and centered on the seatcushion, with their feet comfortably extendedon the floor. Sitting improperly can increasethe chance of injury in a crash event. Forexample, if an occupant slouches, lies down,turns sideways, sits forward, leans forwardor sideways, or puts one or both feet up, thechance of injury during a crash greatlyincreases.
If you think that the status of the passengerairbag off indicator lamp is incorrect, checkfor the following:
•Objects lodged underneath the seat.
•Objects between the seat cushion andthe center console.
•Objects hanging off the seat backrest.
•Objects stowed in the seat backrest mappocket.
•Objects placed on the occupant's lap.
•Cargo interference with the seat
•Other passengers pushing or pulling onthe seat.
•Rear passenger feet and knees restingor pushing on the seat.
The conditions listed above may cause theweight of a properly seated occupant to beincorrectly interpreted by the front passengersensing system. The person in the frontpassenger seat may appear heavier or lighterdue to the conditions described in the listabove.
Make sure the front passengersensing system is operatingproperly. See Crash Sensors andAirbag Indicator (page 51).
If the airbag readiness light is lit, do thefollowing:
The driver and adult passengers shouldcheck for objects lodged underneath thefront passenger seat, or cargo interferingwith the seat.
If there are lodged objects, or cargo isinterfering with the seat, take the followingsteps to remove the obstruction:
•Pull the vehicle over.
•Switch the vehicle off.
•Driver and adult passengers shouldcheck for any objects lodged underneaththe front passenger seat or cargointerfering with the seat.
•Remove the obstruction(s) (if found).
•Restart the vehicle.
•Wait at least two minutes and verify thatthe airbag readiness light is no longerilluminated.
•If the airbag readiness light remainsilluminated, this may or may not be aproblem due to the front passengersensing system.
Do not attempt to repair or service thesystem. Take your vehicle immediately to anauthorized dealer.

Note:Some warning indicators appear inthe information display and operate thesame as a warning lamp but do notilluminate when you start your vehicle.
Adaptive Cruise Control Indicator (If
Equipped)
It illuminates when you switch thesystem on.
It illuminates white when thesystem is in standby mode. It illuminatesgreen when you set the adaptive cruisespeed.

Airbag Warning Lamp
If it does not illuminate when youswitch the ignition on, continuesto flash or remains on when theengine is running, this indicates amalfunction. Have your vehicle checked assoon as possible.
Anti-Lock Brake System Warning Lamp
If it illuminates when you aredriving, this indicates amalfunction. Your vehiclecontinues to have normal braking withoutthe anti-lock brake system function. Haveyour vehicle checked as soon as possible.
Auto Hold Active
It illuminates when the systemholds your vehicle stationary.
Auto Hold Unavailable
It illuminates when the system ison, but unavailable to hold yourvehicle stationary.
Automatic Headlamp High BeamIndicator (If Equipped)
It illuminates when the systemautomatically turns the headlamphigh beam on.

Auto-Start-Stop Indicator (If Equipped)
It will illuminate to inform you whenthe engine shuts down or inconjunction with a message.
Battery
If it illuminates while driving, itindicates a malfunction. Switch offall unnecessary electricalequipment and have the system checked byan authorized dealer immediately.
Blind Spot Information SystemIndicator (If Equipped)
It illuminates when you switch thesystem off.

SITTING IN THE CORRECT
POSITION
WARNINGS
Sitting improperly, out of position orwith the seatback reclined too far cantake weight off the seat cushion and affectthe decision of the passenger sensingsystem, resulting in serious injury or deathin the event of a crash. Always sit uprightagainst your seat back, with your feet on thefloor.
Do not recline the seatback as this cancause the occupant to slide under thesafety belt, resulting in serious injury in theevent of a crash.
Do not place objects higher than theseatback to reduce the risk of seriousinjury in the event of a crash or during heavybraking.
When you use them properly, the seat, headrestraint, safety belt and airbags will provideoptimum protection in the event of a crash.
We recommend that you follow theseguidelines:
•Sit in an upright position with the base ofyour spine as far back as possible.
•Do not recline the seatback more than30 degrees.
•Adjust the head restraint so that the topof it is level with the top of your head andas far forward as possible. Make sure thatyou remain comfortable.
•Keep sufficient distance betweenyourself and the steering wheel. Werecommend a minimum of 10 in (25 cm)between your breastbone and the airbagcover.
•Hold the steering wheel with your armsslightly bent.
•Bend your legs slightly so that you canpress the pedals fully.
•Position the shoulder strap of the safetybelt over the center of your shoulder andposition the lap strap tightly across yourhips.
Make sure that your driving position iscomfortable and that you can maintain fullcontrol of your vehicle.
HEAD RESTRAINTS
WARNINGS
Fully adjust the head restraint beforeyou sit in or operate your vehicle. Thiswill help minimize the risk of neck injury inthe event of a crash. Do not adjust the headrestraint when your vehicle is moving.
