GENERAL INFORMATION

Use only recommended fuels, lubricants,fluids and service parts conforming tospecifications. Motorcraft® parts aredesigned and built to provide the bestperformance in your vehicle.
Precautions
•Do not work on a hot engine.
•Make sure that nothing gets caught inmoving parts.
•Do not work on a vehicle with the enginerunning in an enclosed space, unless youare sure you have enough ventilation.
•Keep all open flames and other burningmaterial (such as cigarettes) away fromthe battery and all fuel related parts.
Working with the Engine Off
1. Set the parking brake and shift thetransmission to park (P).
2. Switch off the engine.
3. Block the wheels.

ENGINE OIL CHECK
WARNING: Do not work on a hotengine.
To check the engine oil level consistentlyand accurately, do the following:
1.Make sure the parking brake is on. Makesure the transmission is in park (P) orneutral (N).
2. Run the engine until it reaches normaloperating temperature.
3. Make sure that your vehicle is on levelground.
4.Switch the engine off and wait 15 minutesfor the oil to drain into the oil pan. Checking the engine oil level too soonafter you switch the engine off may resultin an inaccurate reading.
5. Open the hood. See Opening andClosing the Hood (page 287).
6. Remove the dipstick and wipe it with aclean, lint-free cloth. See Under HoodOverview (page 288).
7.Replace the dipstick and remove it againto check the oil level. See Engine OilDipstick (page 290).
8. Make sure that the oil level is betweenthe maximum and minimum marks. If theoil level is at the minimum mark, add oilimmediately. See Capacities andSpecifications (page 350).

9. If the oil level is correct, replace thedipstick and make sure it is fully seated.
Note:Do not remove the dipstick when theengine is running.
Note: If the oil level is between themaximum and minimum marks, the oil levelis acceptable. Do not add oil.
Note:The oil consumption of new enginesreaches its normal level after approximately3,000 mi (5,000 km).
Adding Engine Oil
WARNING: Do not add engine oil whenthe engine is hot. Failure to follow thisinstruction could result in personal injury.
WARNING: Do not remove the fillercap when the engine is running.
Do not use supplemental engine oil additivesbecause they are unnecessary and couldlead to engine damage that may not becovered by the vehicle Warranty.
Only use oils certified for gasoline enginesby the American Petroleum Institute (API). An oil with this trademark symbol conformsto the current engine and emission systemprotection standards and fuel economyrequirements of the International LubricantsSpecification Advisory Committee (ILSAC).
To top up the engine oil level do thefollowing:
1. Clean the area surrounding the engineoil filler cap before you remove it.
2. Remove the engine oil filler cap. SeeUnder Hood Overview (page 288). Turnit counterclockwise and remove it.
3. Add engine oil that meets Fordspecifications. See Capacities andSpecifications (page 350). You may haveto use a funnel to pour the engine oil intothe opening.
4. Recheck the oil level.
5. If the oil level is correct, replace thedipstick and make sure it is fully seated.
6. Replace the engine oil filler cap. Turn itclockwise until you feel a strongresistance.
Note: Do not add oil further than themaximum mark. Oil levels above themaximum mark may cause engine damage.
Note:Make sure you install the oil filler capcorrectly.
Note:Soak up any spillage with anabsorbent cloth immediately.
OIL CHANGE INDICATOR RESET
Use the information display controls on thesteering wheel to reset the oil changeindicator.

ENGINE COOLANT CHECK
Checking the Engine Coolant
WARNING: Do not add engine coolantwhen the engine is hot. Steam and scaldingliquids released from a hot cooling systemcan burn you badly. Also, you can be burnedif you spill coolant on hot engine parts.
WARNING: Do not put engine coolantin the windshield washer fluid container. Ifsprayed on the windshield, engine coolantcould make it difficult to see through thewindshield.
WARNING: To reduce the risk ofpersonal injury, make sure the engine is coolbefore unscrewing the coolant pressure reliefcap. The cooling system is under pressure;steam and hot liquid can come out forcefullywhen the cap is loosened slightly.
WARNING: Do not add coolant furtherthan the MAX mark.
Note:Automotive fluids are notinterchangeable. Do not use engine coolantor windshield washer fluid outside of itsspecified function and vehicle location.
Note:Do not use stop leak pellets, coolingsystem sealants, or additives as they cancause damage to the engine cooling orheating systems. This damage would not becovered under your vehicle’s warranty.

How Fail-Safe Cooling Works
If the engine begins to overheat, the enginecoolant temperature gauge will move to thered (hot) area and:
A high engine temperaturemessage will appear in theinformation display.
The service engine soon indicatorwill light.
If the engine reaches a presetover-temperature condition, the engine willautomatically switch to alternating cylinderoperation. Each disabled cylinder acts as anair pump and cools the engine.
When this occurs the vehicle will still operate.However:
•The engine power will be limited.
•The air conditioning system will bedisabled.
Continued operation will increase the enginetemperature and the engine will completelyshut down, causing steering and brakingeffort to increase.
Once the engine temperature cools, theengine can be re-started. Take your vehicleto an authorized dealer as soon as possibleto minimize engine damage.
When Fail-Safe Mode Is Activated
WARNING: Fail-safe mode is for useduring emergencies only. Operate yourvehicle in fail-safe mode only as long asnecessary to bring your vehicle to rest in asafe location and seek immediate repairs.When in fail-safe mode, the vehicle will havelimited power, will not be able to maintainhigh-speed operation, and may completelyshut down without warning, potentially losingengine power, power steering assist, andpower brake assist, which may increase thepossibility of a crash resulting in seriousinjury.
WARNING: Never remove the coolantreservoir cap while the engine is running orhot.
You have limited engine power when in thefail-safe mode, so drive your vehicle withcaution. Your vehicle will not be able tomaintain high-speed operation and theengine will run rough. Remember that theengine is capable of completely shuttingdown automatically to prevent enginedamage, therefore:
1. Pull off the road as soon as safelypossible and switch the engine off.
2. Arrange for your vehicle to be taken toan authorized dealer.
3.If this is not possible, wait a short periodfor the engine to cool.
4. Check the coolant level and replenish iflow.
5.Re-start the engine and take your vehicleto an authorized dealer.
Note:Driving your vehicle without repairingthe engine problem increases the chance ofengine damage. Take your vehicle to anauthorized dealer as soon as possible.

AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION
FLUID CHECK
The automatic transmission does not havea transmission fluid dipstick.
The automatic transmission does notconsume fluid. However, the fluid levelshould be checked if the transmission is notworking properly, for example if thetransmission slips or shifts slowly or if younotice some sign of fluid leakage.
Note:Transmission fluid should be checkedby an authorized dealer. If required, fluidshould be added by an authorized dealer.
Do not use supplemental transmission fluidadditives, treatments or cleaning agents. Theuse of these materials may affecttransmission operation and result in damageto internal transmission components.
BRAKE FLUID CHECK
WARNING: Do not use any fluid otherthan the recommended brake fluid as thiswill reduce brake efficiency. Use of incorrectfluid could result in the loss of vehiclecontrol, serious personal injury or death.
WARNING: Only use brake fluid froma sealed container. Contamination with dirt,water, petroleum products or other materialsmay result in brake system damage or failure.Failure to adhere to this warning could resultin the loss of vehicle control, seriouspersonal injury or death.
WARNING: Do not allow the fluid totouch your skin or eyes. If this happens, rinsethe affected areas immediately with plentyof water and contact your physician.
WARNING: A fluid level between theMAX and MIN lines is within the normaloperating range and there is no need to addfluid. A fluid level not in the normal operatingrange could compromise the performanceof the system. Have your vehicle checkedimmediately.
To avoid fluid contamination, the reservoircap must remain in place and fully tight,unless you are adding fluid.
Only use fluid that meets Ford specifications.See Capacities and Specifications (page344).
WASHER FLUID CHECK
WARNING: If you operate your vehiclein temperatures below 41.0°F (5°C), usewasher fluid with antifreeze protection.Failure to use washer fluid with antifreezeprotection in cold weather could result inimpaired windshield vision and increase therisk of injury or accident.

Note:The front and rear washer systemsare supplied from the same reservoir.
Add fluid to fill the reservoir if the level is low.Only use a washer fluid that meets ourspecifications. See Capacities andSpecifications (page 344).
State or local regulations on volatile organiccompounds may restrict the use of methanol,a common windshield washer antifreezeadditive. Washer fluids containingnon-methanol antifreeze agents should beused only if they provide cold weatherprotection without damaging the vehicle’spaint finish, wiper blades or washer system.
FUEL FILTER
Your vehicle is equipped with a lifetime fuelfilter that is integrated with the fuel tank.Regular maintenance or replacement is notneeded.
CHANGING THE 12V BATTERY
WARNING: Batteries normally produceexplosive gases which can cause personalinjury. Therefore, do not allow flames, sparksor lighted substances to come near thebattery. When working near the battery,always shield your face and protect youreyes. Always provide correct ventilation.
WARNING: When lifting a plastic-casedbattery, excessive pressure on the end wallscould cause acid to flow through the ventcaps, resulting in personal injury and damageto the vehicle or battery. Lift the battery witha battery carrier or with your hands onopposite corners.
WARNING: Keep batteries out of reachof children. Batteries contain sulfuric acid.Avoid contact with skin, eyes or clothing.Shield your eyes when working near thebattery to protect against possible splashingof acid solution. In case of acid contact withskin or eyes, flush immediately with waterfor a minimum of 15 minutes and get promptmedical attention. If acid is swallowed, call aphysician immediately.
WARNING: Battery posts, terminalsand related accessories contain lead andlead compounds. Wash hands after handling.
WARNING: For vehicles withAuto-Start-Stop the battery requirement isdifferent. You must replace the battery withone of exactly the same specification.
Your vehicle is fitted with a Motorcraftmaintenance-free battery which normallydoes not require additional water.

4. On the wall or screen, you will observea flat zone of high intensity light locatedat the top of the right hand portion of thebeam pattern. If the top edge of the highintensity light zone is not at the horizontalreference line, you will need to adjust theheadlamp.
5. Locate the vertical adjuster on eachheadlamp. Turn the adjuster eitherclockwise or counterclockwise in orderto aim the headlamp.
6.Close the hood and switch off the lamps.
Horizontal Aim Adjustment
Horizontal aim is not required for this vehicleand is non-adjustable.
REMOVING A HEADLAMP
To gain access to the headlamp securingbolts and to remove the headlamp assembly,you must first remove the front fascia andfront bumper assemblies. We recommendyou see an authorized dealer.
CHANGING A BULB
WARNING: Switch all of the lamps andthe ignition off. Failure to follow this warningcould result in serious personal injury.
WARNING: Bulbs can become hot. Letthe bulb cool down before removing it.Failure to do so could result in personalinjury.
Install in the reverse order unless otherwisestated.

High Intensity Discharge Headlamp (If
Equipped)
These lamps operate at a high voltage. Seean authorized dealer if they fail.
Front Direction Indicator
1. Remove the headlamp. See Removinga Headlamp (page 301).
2. Turn the bulb holder counterclockwiseand remove it.
3.Remove the bulb by pulling it straight out.
LED Lamps
LED lamps are not serviceable items. See anauthorized dealer if they fail.
The following lamps are LED:
•Side direction indicators.
•Approach lamp.
•Brake and rear lamps.
•Rear direction indicators.
•Reversing lamps.
•Central high mounted brake lamp.
License Plate Lamp
1. Use a suitable tool, for example ascrewdriver, to carefully remove thelamp.
2. Remove the lamp.
3. Turn the bulb holder counterclockwiseand remove it.
4.Remove the bulb by pulling it straight out.
CHANGING THE ENGINE AIR
FILTER
WARNING: To reduce the risk ofvehicle damage and personal burn injuries,do not start your engine with the air cleanerremoved and do not remove it while theengine is running.
When changing the air filter element, useonly the air filter element listed in theMotorcraft Parts table. See Motorcraft Parts(page 346).

Note: Do not use razor blades or othersharp objects to clean or remove decals fromthe inside of the heated rear window. Thevehicle warranty does not cover damagecaused to the heated rear window grid lines.
CLEANING THE INTERIOR
WARNING: Do not use cleaningsolvents, bleach or dye on the vehicle'sseatbelts, as these actions may weaken thebelt webbing.
WARNING: On vehicles equipped withseat-mounted airbags, do not use chemicalsolvents or strong detergents. Such productscould contaminate the side airbag systemand affect performance of the side airbag ina crash.
Note:Follow the same procedure forcleaning leather seats when cleaning leatherinterior. See Cleaning Leather Seats (page311).
Note:Do not use household cleaningproducts or glass cleaners, which can stainand discolor the fabric and affect the flameretardant abilities of the seat materials.
For fabric, carpets, cloth seats, safety beltsand seats equipped with side airbags:
•Remove dust and loose dirt with avacuum cleaner.
•Remove light stains and soil withMotorcraft® Professional Strength Carpet& Upholstery Cleaner.
For grease or tar stains:
•Spot clean the area with Motorcraft® Spotand Stain Remover. In Canada, useMotorcraft® Multi-Purpose Cleaner.
•If a ring forms on the fabric after spotcleaning, clean the entire areaimmediately, but do not oversaturate orthe ring will set.
Cleaning Black Label or PresidentialInterior (If Equipped)
Note:Alcantara microfiber cloth fabric ismade of polyester microfiber withmicro-porous polyurethane. Usingcommercially available fabric cleaners cancause permanent damage.
Note:Do not use commercially availableleather and vinyl cleaning products onAlcantara microfiber cloth fabric.
Note:Lincoln Black Label or Presidentialvehicles may have Alcantara microfiber clothfabric on the seats, headliner, floor mats anddoor panels.
Depending on the type of stain, use water,lemon juice or pure ethyl alcohol whencleaning. For cleaning Alcantara microfibercloth, refer to the following chart:
