ECO mode LINCOLN MKZ 2018 Owner's Manual

The keyless starting system has threemodes:
•Off: Turns the ignition off.
•Without applying the brake pedal,press and release the button oncewhen the ignition is in the on mode,or when the vehicle is running but isnot moving.
•On: All electrical circuits are operationaland the warning lamps and indicatorsilluminate.
•Without applying the brake pedal,press and release the button once.
•Start: Starts the vehicle. The engine maynot start when the vehicle starts.
•Press the brake pedal, and then pressthe button until the vehicle starts. Anindicator light on the buttonilluminates when the ignition is onand when the vehicle starts.
STARTING A GASOLINE ENGINE
When you start the engine, the idle speedincreases, this helps to warm up the engine.If the engine idle speed does not slow downautomatically, have your vehicle checked byan authorized dealer.
Before starting the engine, check thefollowing:
•Make sure all occupants have fastenedtheir safety belts.
•Make sure the headlamps and electricalaccessories are off.
•Make sure the parking brake is on.
•Put the transmission in P.
Note:Do not touch the accelerator pedal.
1. Fully press the brake pedal.
2. Press the button.
The system does not function if:
•The key frequencies are jammed.
•The key battery has no charge.
If you are unable to start the engine, do thefollowing:
1. Remove the rubber covering (A) in thecupholder. With the buttons facingupward and the unlock button facing thefront of your vehicle, place the firstintelligent access key into the backupslot (B).
2. With the key in this position, press thebrake pedal, then the START button toswitch the ignition on and start yourvehicle.
Fast Restart
The fast restart feature allows you to restartthe engine within 20 seconds of switching itoff, even if a valid key is not present.

2. A message will appear in yourinformation display screen prompting youto press the neutral (N) button.
3. Press the neutral (N) button again toenter Stay in Neutral mode.
A message will appear in your informationdisplay screen when your vehicle hasentered Stay in Neutral mode.
Note:During this mode the neutral (N) buttonwill flash continuously and your instrumentcluster will display N as the selected gear.
Exiting Stay in Neutral mode
To disable Stay in Neutral mode selectanother gear. See the Putting the Vehiclein Gear for instructions on how to do this.
Entering a Carwash
Note:Always put your vehicle in Stay inNeutral mode when entering an automaticcar wash. Failure to do this could result invehicle damage not covered by warranty.
Drive (D)
The normal driving position for the best fueleconomy.
Sport (S)
Putting the vehicle in sport (S):
•Provides additional engine braking andextends lower gear operation to enhanceperformance for uphill climbs, hilly terrainor mountainous areas. This will increaseengine RPM during engine braking
•Provides additional lower gear operationthrough the automatic transmission shiftstrategy
•Provides gear selection more quickly andat higher engine speeds
SelectShift Automatic™ Transmission
Your SelectShift Automatic transmissiongives you the ability to change gearsmanually.
Paddle Shifters
With your vehicle in drive (D), the paddleshifters provide temporary manual control.They allow you the ability to shift gearsquickly, without taking your hands off thesteering wheel.
You can achieve extensive manual controlby pressing the sport (S) button.
•Pull the right paddle (+) to upshift.
•Pull the left paddle (–) to downshift.

Operating AWD Vehicles With Spareor Mismatched Tires
WARNING
Only use replacement tires and wheelsthat are the same size, load index,speed rating and type (such as P-metricversus LT-metric or all-season versusall-terrain) as those originally provided byFord. The recommended tire and wheel sizemay be found on either the SafetyCompliance Certification Label (affixed toeither the door hinge pillar, door-latch post,or the door edge that meets the door-latchpost, next to the driver’s seating position), orthe Tire Label which is located on the B-Pillaror edge of the driver’s door. If thisinformation is not found on these labels, thenyou should contact your authorized dealeras soon as possible. Use of any tire or wheelnot recommended by Ford can affect thesafety and performance of your vehicle,which could result in an increased risk of lossof vehicle control, vehicle rollover, personalinjury and death.
A spare tire of a different size other than thetire provided should never be used. TheAWD system may disable automatically andenter front-wheel drive only mode to protectdriveline components if a non-full sized tireis installed. This condition may display anAWD OFF message in the informationdisplay. If there is an AWD OFF message inthe information display from using a non-fullsized spare tire, this indicator should turn offafter reinstalling the repaired or replacednormal road tire and cycling the ignition offand on. It is recommended to reinstall therepaired or replaced road tire as soon aspossible.
Major dissimilar tire sizes between the frontand rear axles (for example, 17 inch lowprofile tires on the front axle and 22 inch highprofile tires on the rear axle) could cause theAWD system to stop functioning and defaultto front-wheel drive or damage the AWDsystem. However, the AWD system iscapable of tolerating any combination of newand worn tires of the same original tire size.For example, using 3 worn tread tires and 1new tread tire all of the same original tiresize, can be tolerated by the AWD system.
Driving In Special Conditions With All-Wheel Drive (AWD)
AWD vehicles are equipped for driving onsand, snow, mud and rough roads and haveoperating characteristics that are somewhatdifferent from conventional vehicles, both onand off the highway.
When driving at slow speeds in deep sandunder high outside temperatures, use a lowgear when possible. Lower gear operationwill maximize the engine and transmissioncooling capability.
Under severe operating conditions, the A/Cmay cycle on and off to protect overheatingof the engine.
Basic operating principles in specialconditions
•Drive slower in strong crosswinds whichcan affect the normal steeringcharacteristics of your vehicle.
•Be extremely careful when driving onpavement made slippery by loose sand,water, gravel, snow or ice.

Electronic Stability Control
The system enhances your vehicle’s abilityto prevent skids or lateral slides by applyingbrakes to one or more of the wheelsindividually and, if necessary, reducingengine power.
Traction Control
The system enhances your vehicle’s abilityto maintain traction of the wheels bydetecting and controlling wheel spin. SeeUsing Traction Control (page 201).

USING STABILITY CONTROL
The system automatically turns on each timeyou switch the ignition on.
The electronic stability control portion of thesystem disables when the transmission is inreverse (R) or, on some models, if you pressand hold the stability control button for morethan five seconds when you apply the brakesand the vehicle is at a stop.
You can switch the traction control systemoff or on independently.

Note:Stability control fully off can only occurwhen you put the Active Suspension System(CCD) in sport mode. If you are not in sportmode or change from sport mode to anothermode, the stability control enables.
Note:Do not use Sport mode on publicroadways.
Your vehicle, if equipped with sport modeallows you to reduce normal stability andtraction control system intervention andprovide a more spirited driving experience.To enter sport mode, press the stabilitycontrol button twice rapidly. A messageappears in the information display that thesystem is now in sport mode.

Switching Cruise Control Off
Note:You erase the set speed when youswitch the system off.
Press OFF when the system is in stand bymode, or switch the ignition off.
USING ADAPTIVE CRUISE
CONTROL (If Equipped)
WARNINGS
Always pay close attention to changingroad conditions when using adaptivecruise control. The system does not replaceattentive driving. Failing to pay attention tothe road may result in a crash, serious injuryor death.
Do not use the adaptive cruise controlwhen entering or leaving a highway,on roads with intersections or roundaboutsor non-vehicular traffic or roads that arewinding, slippery, unpaved, or steep slopes.
Do not use the system in poor visibility,for example fog, heavy rain, spray orsnow.
WARNINGS
Do not use the system when towing atrailer with aftermarket trailer brakecontrols. Aftermarket trailer brakes will notfunction properly when you switch thesystem on because the brakes areelectronically controlled. Failing to do so mayresult in loss of vehicle control, which couldresult in serious injury.
Do not use tire sizes other than thoserecommended because this can affectthe normal operation of the system. Failureto do so may result in a loss of vehiclecontrol, which could result in serious injury.
Adaptive cruise control may not detectstationary or slow moving vehiclesbelow 6 mph (10 km/h).
Adaptive cruise control does not detectpedestrians or objects in the road.
Adaptive cruise control does not detectoncoming vehicles in the same lane.
Adaptive cruise control is not a crashwarning or avoidance system.
Note:It is your responsibility to stay alert,drive safely and be in control of the vehicleat all times.
The system adjusts your vehicle speed tomaintain the set gap between you and thevehicle in front of you in the same lane. Youcan select four gap settings.
The system uses a radar sensor that projectsa beam directly in front of your vehicle.
The adaptive cruise controls are on thesteering wheel.

Switching to Normal Cruise Control
WARNING
Normal cruise control will not brakewhen your vehicle is approachingslower vehicles. Always be aware of whichmode you have selected and apply thebrakes when necessary.
You can change from adaptive cruise controlto normal cruise control through theinformation display.
The cruise control indicator lightreplaces the adaptive cruisecontrol indicator light if you selectnormal cruise control. The gap setting doesnot display, and the system does not respondto lead vehicles. Automatic braking remainsactive to maintain set speed.

LANE KEEPING SYSTEM (If Equipped)
WARNINGS
The system is designed to aid thedriver. It is not intended to replace yourattention and judgment. You are stillresponsible to drive with due care andattention.
Always drive with due care andattention when using and operating thecontrols and features on your vehicle.
At all times, you are responsible forcontrolling your vehicle, supervisingthe system and intervening, if required.Failure to take care may result in the loss ofcontrol of your vehicle, serious personalinjury or death.
In cold and severe weather conditionsthe system may not function. Rain,snow and spray can all limit sensorperformance.
The system will not operate if thesensor cannot track the road lanemarkings.
WARNINGS
The sensor may incorrectly track lanemarkings as other structures or objects.This can result in a false or missed warning.
Large contrasts in outside lighting canlimit sensor performance.
The system may not operate properlyif the sensor is blocked. Keep thewindshield free from obstruction.
If damage occurs in the immediate areasurrounding the sensor, have yourvehicle checked as soon as possible.
Note:The system works above 40 mph(64 km/h).
Note:The system works as long as thecamera can detect one lane marking.
Note:The system may not function if thecamera is blocked or there is damage to thewindshield.
Note:When Aid mode is on and the systemdetects no steering activity for a short period,the system will alert you to put your handson the steering wheel. The system maydetect a light grip or touch on the steeringwheel as hands off driving.
The system notifies you to stay in your lanethrough the steering system and theinstrument cluster display when the frontcamera detects an unintentional drift out ofyour lane is likely to occur. The systemautomatically detects and tracks the roadlane markings using a camera mountedbehind the interior rear view mirror.

System Display
When you switch on the system, an overheadgraphic of a vehicle with lane markings willdisplay in the information display. If youselect aid mode when you switch on thesystem, a separate white icon will alsoappear or in some vehicles arrows willdisplay with the lane markings.
When you switch off the system, the lanemarking graphics will not display.
While the system is on, the color of the lanemarkings will change to indicate the systemstatus.
Gray: Indicates that the system is temporarilyunable to provide a warning or interventionon the indicated side(s). This may bebecause:
•Your vehicle is under the activationspeed.
•The direction indicator is active.
•Your vehicle is in a dynamic maneuver.
•The road has no or poor lane markingsin the camera field-of-view.
•The camera is obscured or unable todetect the lane markings due toenvironmental, traffic or vehicleconditions. For example, significant sunangles, shadows, snow, heavy rain or fog,following a large vehicle that is blockingor shadowing the lane, poor headlampillumination.

Green: Indicates that the system is availableor ready to provide a warning or intervention,on the indicated side(s).
Yellow: Indicates that the system is providingor has just provided a lane keeping aidintervention.
Red: Indicates that the system is providingor has just provided a lane keeping alertwarning.
The system can be temporarily suppressedat any time by the following:
•Quick braking.
•Fast acceleration.

Note:If something hits the front end of yourvehicle or damage occurs, the radar sensingzone may change. This could cause missedor false vehicle detections. Contact anauthorized dealer to have the radar checkedfor proper coverage and operation.
Note:If your vehicle detects excessive heatat the camera or a potential misalignmentcondition, a message may display in theinformation display indicating temporarysensor unavailability. This messagedeactivates automatically when operationalconditions are correct. For example, whenthe ambient temperature around the sensordecreases or the sensor automaticallyrecalibrates.

LINCOLN DRIVE CONTROL
Lincoln Drive Control delivers the Lincolndriving experience through a suite ofsophisticated electronic vehicle systems.These systems continuously monitor yourdriving inputs and the road conditions tooptimize ride comfort, steering, handling,
powertrain response and sound. You canpreset your preferences for these systemswithin the information display. Lincoln DriveControl will respond to your preferencesbased on what gear position you select. Thisprovides a single location to control multiplesystems performance settings.
Lincoln Drive Control consists of thefollowing systems:
•Continuously controlled dampingdynamically adjusts the shock absorbersstiffness in real time to match the roadsurface and driver inputs. This systemcontinuously monitors your vehicle’smotion (roll, pitch, bounce), suspensionposition, load, speed, road conditions,and steering to adjust the suspensiondamping for optimal vehicle control.
•Electronically power-assisted steeringadjusts steering effort and feel based onyour vehicle speed and your inputs.
•Active noise control utilizes your vehicleelectronics to enhance the acousticexperience.
•Electronic stability control and tractioncontrol maintain your vehicle control inadverse conditions or high performancedriving.
•Electronic throttle control enhances thepowertrain response to your inputs.
Using Lincoln Drive Control
You can configure which of the Drive Controlmodes are active when your vehicle is indrive (D) or in sport (S). The configurationremains active until modified from the mainmenu on the information display.
