Engine:The engine speed in your hybrid is not directly tied to your
vehicle speed. Your vehicle’s engine and transmission are designed to
deliver the power you need at the most efficient engine speed. During
heavy accelerations, your hybrid may reach high engine speeds (up to
6000 RPM). This is characteristic of the Atkinson cycle engine
technology helping to maximize your hybrid’s fuel economy.
In prolonged mountainous driving, you may see the engine tachometer
changing without your input. This is intentional and maintains the
battery charge level. You may also notice during extended downhill
driving that your engine continues to run instead of shutting off.
During this “engine braking”, the engine stays on, but it’s not using any
fuel. You may also hear a slight whine or whistle when operating your
vehicle. This is the normal operation of the electric generator in the
hybrid system.
During certain events (such as vehicle servicing) your low voltage
(underhood) battery may become disconnected or disabled. When this
occurs, and after reconnecting the low voltage (underhood) battery and
driving the vehicle, the engine may continue to operate for 3-5 seconds
after the key is turned to the off position. This is a normal condition, as
the vehicle’s computers are relearning the operating characteristics of
your particular engine in order to operate it at maximum efficiency.
Braking:Your hybrid is equipped with standard hydraulic braking and
regenerative braking. Regenerative braking is performed by your
transmission and it captures brake energy and stores it in your high
voltage battery.
Driving to optimize fuel economy
Your fuel economy should improve throughout your hybrid’s break-in
period. As with any vehicle, fuel economy can be significantly impacted
by your driving habits and accessory usage. For best results, keep in
mind these tips:
Tire Inflation:Keep tires properly inflated and only use recommended
size.
Drive Habits:Aggressive driving increases the amount of energy
required to move your vehicle. In general, better fuel economy is
achieved with mild to moderate acceleration and deceleration. Moderate
braking is particularly important since it allows you to maximize the
energy captured by the regenerative braking system.

Low tire pressure warning:
Illuminates to warn you when your
tire pressure is low. If the telltale
remains on solid at start up or while
driving, the tire pressure should be
checked. The message center will also display LOW TIRE PRESSURE
when one or more tires on your vehicle have low tire pressure.
The telltale can also warn you when the system is malfunctioning. If the
telltale begins to flash, when the ignition is first turned on or while
driving, contact your authorized dealer as soon as possible. The message
center will also display TIRE PRESSURE SENSOR FAULT or TIRE
PRESSURE MONITOR FAULT when the system is malfunctioning.
Please note that if your spare tire is in use, the damaged road tire must
be re-installed on your vehicle to restore system functionality. For more
information on this system, refer toTire pressure monitoring system
(TPMS)in theTires, Wheels and Loadingchapter.
Low fuel (RTT):Displays when
the fuel level in the fuel tank is at
or near empty. The fuel gage will
turn yellow and then red depending
on fuel level. A message may also display in the message center. Refer to
Fuel gaugein this chapter.
Speed control (RTT):The speed
control system indicator light
changes color to indicate what mode
the system is in:
•On (amber light):Illuminates
when the speed control system is turned on. Turns off when the speed
control system is engaged or turned off.
•Engaged (green light):Illuminates when the speed control system is
engaged. Turns off when the speed control system is disengaged.

SERVICE POWER STEERING NOW— The power steering system
has detected a condition within the power steering system that requires
service immediately.
SERVICE ADVANCETRAC— Displayed when the AdvanceTrac
system has detected a condition that requires service.
DRIVER DOOR AJAR— Displayed when the driver’s door is not
completely closed.
PASSENGER DOOR AJAR— Displayed when the passenger side door
is not completely closed.

Replacing fog lamp bulbs
1. Make sure the fog lamp switch is
in the off position.
2. From underneath the vehicle,
partially remove the tire splash
shield by removing four drive
screws.
After removing to allow free access
to the front fog lamp bulb and
electrical wire harness, the splash shield flap can be repositioned.
3. Rotate the harness/bulb assembly
counterclockwise to remove from
the fog lamp.
4. Carefully disconnect the bulb
from the harness assembly via the
two snap clips.
Install the new bulb in reverse order.

Types of garage door openers (rolling code and fixed code)
The Car2UHome Automation System may be programmed to operate
rolling code and fixed code garage door openers.
•Rolling code garage door openers were produced after 1996 and are
code protected. Rolling code means the coded signal is changed every
time your remote control garage door opener is used.
•Fixed code garage door openers were produced prior to 1996. Fixed
code uses the same coded signal every time. It is manually
programmed by setting DIP switches for a unique personal code.
If you do not know if your garage
door opener is a rolling code or
fixed code device, open your garage
door opener’s remote control battery
cover. If a panel of DIP switches is
present your garage door opener is
a fixed code device. If not, your
garage door opener is a rolling code
device.
Note:Programming the Car2Usystem to a community gate will require
a unique set of instructions depending on the gate system model.
Contact the Car2Uhelp line at 1-866-572-2728 to program your Car2U
system.
Note:Accidentally entering the program mode may override previously
programmed buttons. This can happen by pressing and releasing the
outer two buttons, or all three buttons, simultaneously. If this happens,
do not press any button until the module times out after approximately
2.5 seconds and resets to normal mode. When time-out occurs, all three
LEDs will flash rapidly for a few seconds then turn off. Any settings
should remain as previously set.
Rolling code programming
Note:Programming the rolling code garage door opener involves
time-sensitive actions. Read the entire procedure prior to beginning so
you will know which actions are time-sensitive. If you do not follow the
time-sensitive actions, the device will time out and you will have to
repeat the procedure.
Note:Do not program the Car2Usystem with the vehicle in the garage.

Programming spare keys
You can program your own integrated keyhead transmitters or standard
SecuriLockcoded keys to your vehicle. This procedure will program
both the engine immobilizer key code and the remote entry transmitter
portion of the IKT to your vehicle.Note:A maximum of eight coded
keys can be programmed to your vehicle; only four of these eight can be
IKTs with remote entry functionality.
Tips:
•Only use integrated keyhead transmitters (IKTs) or standard
SecuriLockkeys.
•You must have two previously programmed coded keys (keys that
already operate your vehicle’s engine) and the new unprogrammed
key(s) readily accessible.
•If two previously programmed coded keys are not available, you must
take your vehicle to your authorized dealer to have the spare key(s)
programmed.
Please read and understand the
entire procedure before you begin.
1. Insert the first previously
programmedcoded keyinto the
ignition.
2. Turn the ignition from the 1 (off)
position to the 3 (on) position. Keep
the ignition in the 3 (on) position
for at least three seconds, but no more than 10 seconds.
3. Turn the ignition to the 1 (off) position and remove the firstcoded
keyfrom the ignition.
4. After three seconds but within 10 seconds of turning the ignition to
the 1 (off) position, insert the second previouslycoded keyinto the
ignition.
5. Turn the ignition from the 1 (off) position to the 3 (on) position. Keep
the ignition in the 3 (on) position for at least three seconds, but no more
than 10 seconds.
6. Turn the ignition to the 1 (off) position and remove the second
previously programmedcoded keyfrom the ignition.
7. After three seconds but within 20 seconds of turning the ignition to
the 1 (off) position and removing the previously programmedcoded
key,insert the new unprogrammed key (new key/valet key) into the
ignition.

How to use the automatic locking mode
1. Buckle the combination lap and
shoulder belt.
2. Grasp the shoulder portion and
pull downward until the entire belt
is pulled out.
•Allow the belt to retract. As the belt retracts, you will hear a clicking
sound. This indicates the safety belt is now in the automatic locking
mode.
How to disengage the automatic locking mode
Disconnect the combination lap/shoulder belt and allow it to retract
completely to disengage the automatic locking mode and activate the
vehicle sensitive (emergency) locking mode.
WARNING:After any vehicle collision, the safety belt system at
all passenger seating positions must be checked by an authorized
dealer to verify that the “automatic locking retractor” feature for child
seats is still functioning properly. In addition, all safety belts should be
checked for proper function.
WARNING:BELT AND RETRACTOR ASSEMBLY MUST BE
REPLACED if the safety belt assembly “automatic locking
retractor” feature or any other safety belt function is not operating
properly when checked by an authorized dealer. Failure to replace the
belt and retractor assembly could increase the risk of injury in
collisions.
