PRINCIPLE OF OPERATION
WARNING: Always drive and ridewith your seatback upright and the lap beltsnug and low across the hips.
WARNING: Children must always beproperly restrained.
WARNING: Never let a passengerhold a child on his or her lap while thevehicle is moving. The passenger cannotprotect the child from injury in a crash.
WARNING: All occupants of yourvehicle, including the driver, should alwaysproperly wear their seatbelts, even whenan airbag supplemental restraint system isprovided. Failure to properly wear yourseatbelt could seriously increase the riskof injury or death.
WARNING: It is extremely dangerousto ride in a cargo area, inside or outside ofa vehicle. In a crash, people riding in theseareas are more likely to be seriouslyinjured or killed. Do not allow people toride in any area of your vehicle that is notequipped with seats and seatbelts. Makesure everyone in your vehicle is in a seatand properly using a seatbelt. Failure tofollow this warning could result in seriouspersonal injury or death.
WARNING: In a rollover crash, anunbelted person is significantly more likelyto die than a person wearing a seatbelt.
WARNING: Each seating position inyour vehicle has a specific seatbeltassembly made up of one buckle and onetongue designed to be used as a pair. Usethe shoulder belt on the outside shoulderonly. Never wear the shoulder belt underthe arm. Never use a single seatbelt formore than one person.
WARNING: Even with advancedrestraints systems, properly restrainchildren 12 and under in a rear seatingposition. Failure to follow this couldseriously increase the risk of injury ordeath.
WARNING: Seatbelts and seats maybe hot in a vehicle that is in the sunshine.The hot seatbelts or seats may burn a smallchild. Check seat covers and bucklesbefore you place a child anywhere nearthem.
All seating positions in your vehicle have lapand shoulder seatbelts. All occupants of thevehicle should always properly wear theirseatbelts, even when an airbag supplementalrestraint system is provided.
The seatbelt system consists of:
•Lap and shoulder seatbelts.
•Shoulder seatbelt with automatic lockingmode, (except driver seatbelt and rearinflatable seatbelt).

How to Disengage the Automatic LockingMode
Unbuckle the combination lap and shoulderbelt and allow it to retract completely todisengage the automatic locking mode andactivate the vehicle sensitive (emergency)locking mode.
Rear Inflatable Seatbelt (If Equipped)
WARNING: Do not attempt to service,repair, or modify the supplementaryrestraint system or associated components.Failure to follow this instruction could resultin personal injury or death.
The rear inflatable seatbelts are in theshoulder portion of the seatbelts of thesecond-row outermost seating positions.
Note:The rear inflatable seatbelts arecompatible with most infant and child safetycar seats and belt positioning booster seatswhen you properly install them. This isbecause they are designed to fill with acooled gas at a lower pressure and at aslower rate than traditional airbags. Afterinflation, the shoulder portion of the seatbeltremains cool to the touch.
The rear inflatable seatbelt consists of thefollowing:
•An inflatable bag in the shoulder seatbeltwebbing.
•Lap seatbelt webbing with automaticlocking mode.
•The same warning light, electroniccontrol and diagnostic unit as used forthe front seatbelts.
•Impact sensors in various parts of thevehicle.
How does the rear inflatable seatbeltsystem work?
WARNING: If a supplementaryrestraint system component has deployed,it will not function again. Have the systemand associated components inspected assoon as possible. Failure to follow thisinstruction could result in personal injuryor death.
The rear inflatable seatbelts function likestandard restraints in everyday usage.

Make sure that:
•You set the parking brake.
•The transmission is in park (P).
•The ignition is off.
•You close all vehicle doors.
•You unbuckle the driver and frontpassenger seatbelts.
1. Switch the ignition on. Do not start theengine.
2.Wait until the seatbelt warning lamp turnsoff (about one minute). After Step 2, waitan additional five seconds beforeproceeding with Step 3. Once you startStep 3, you must complete the procedurewithin 60 seconds.
3.For the seating position you are switchingoff, buckle then unbuckle the seatbeltthree times at a moderate speed, endingin the unbuckled state. After Step 3, theseatbelt warning lamp turns on.
4. When the seatbelt warning lamp is on,buckle then unbuckle the seatbelt. AfterStep 4, the seatbelt warning lamp flashesfor confirmation.
•This switches the feature off if it iscurrently on.
•This switches the feature on if it iscurrently off.
CHILD RESTRAINT AND SEATBELT
MAINTENANCE
Inspect the vehicle seatbelts and child safetyseat systems periodically to make sure theywork properly and are not damaged. Inspectthe vehicle and child restraint seatbelts tomake sure there are no nicks, tears or cuts.Replace if necessary. All vehicle seatbeltassemblies, including retractors, buckles,front seatbelt buckle assemblies, bucklesupport assemblies (slide bar-if equipped),shoulder belt height adjusters (if equipped),shoulder belt guide on seat backrest (ifequipped), child safety seat LATCH andtether anchors, and attaching hardware,should be inspected after a crash. Read thechild restraint manufacturer's instructions foradditional inspection and maintenanceinformation specific to the child restraint.
We recommend that all seatbelt assembliesin use in vehicles involved in a crash bereplaced. However, if the crash was minorand an authorized dealer finds that the beltsdo not show damage and continue tooperate properly, they do not need to bereplaced. Seatbelt assemblies not in useduring a crash should also be inspected andreplaced if either damage or improperoperation is noted.

SEATBELT EXTENSION
WARNING: Persons who fit into thevehicle's seatbelt should not use anextension. Unnecessary use could resultin serious personal injury in the event of acrash.

The dealer will providean extension designed specifically for thisvehicle, model year and seating position.The use of an extension intended foranother vehicle, model year or seatingposition may not offer you the fullprotection of your vehicle’s seatbeltrestraint system.
WARNING: Never use seatbeltextensions to install child restraints.
WARNING: Do not use a seatbeltextension with an inflatable seatbelt.
WARNING: Do not use extensionsto change the fit of the belt across thetorso, over the lap or to make the seatbeltbuckle easier to reach.
If, because of body size or driving position,it is not possible to properly fasten theseatbelt over your lap and shoulder, anextension that is compatible with theseatbelts is available free of charge fromLincoln Motor Company dealers. Only Lincolnseatbelt extensions made by the samecompany which made the original equipmentseatbelts, should be used with Lincolnseatbelts. Ask your authorized dealer if yourextension is compatible with your Lincolnvehicle restraint system.

WARNING: Airbags do not inflateslowly or gently, and the risk of injury froma deploying airbag is the greatest close tothe trim covering the airbag module.
WARNING: All occupants of yourvehicle, including the driver, should alwaysproperly wear their seatbelts, even whenan airbag supplemental restraint system isprovided. Failure to properly wear yourseatbelt could seriously increase the riskof injury or death.

WARNING: Keep the areas in frontof the airbags free from obstruction. Donot affix anything to or over the airbagcovers. Objects could become projectilesduring airbag deployment or in a suddenstop. Failure to follow this instruction couldresult in personal injury or death.
WARNING: Airbags can kill or injurea child in a child restraint. Never place arear-facing child restraint in front of anactive airbag. If you must use aforward-facing child restraint in the frontseat, move the seat upon which the childrestraint is installed all the way back.

WARNING: Several airbag systemcomponents get hot after inflation. Toreduce the risk of injury, do not touch themafter inflation.

The airbags are a supplemental restraintsystem and are designed to work with theseatbelts to help protect the driver and rightfront passenger from certain upper bodyinjuries. Airbags do not inflate slowly; thereis a risk of injury from a deploying airbag.
Note:You will hear a loud bang and see acloud of harmless powdery residue if anairbag deploys. This is normal.

Supplementary Restraints System

The airbags inflate and deflate rapidly uponactivation. After airbag deployment, it isnormal to notice a smoke-like, powderyresidue or smell the burnt propellant. Thismay consist of cornstarch, talcum powder (tolubricate the bag) or sodium compounds (forexample, baking soda) that result from thecombustion process that inflates the airbag. Small amounts of sodium hydroxide may bepresent which may irritate the skin and eyes,but none of the residue is toxic.
While the system is designed to help reduceserious injuries, contact with a deployingairbag may also cause abrasions or swelling.Temporary hearing loss is also a possibilityas a result of the noise associated with adeploying airbag. Because airbags mustinflate rapidly and with considerable force,there is the risk of death or serious injuriessuch as fractures, facial and eye injuries orinternal injuries, particularly to occupantswho are not properly restrained or areotherwise out of position at the time of airbagdeployment. Thus, it is extremely importantthat occupants be properly restrained as faraway from the airbag module as possiblewhile maintaining vehicle control.
Routine maintenance of the airbags is notrequired.
DRIVER AND PASSENGER
AIRBAGS
WARNING: Do not place your armson the airbag cover or through the steeringwheel. Failure to follow this instructioncould result in personal injury.

Proper Driver and Front PassengerSeating Adjustment
WARNING: National Highway TrafficSafety Administration (NHTSA)recommends a minimum distance of atleast 10 in (25 cm) between an occupant'schest and the driver airbag module.
To properly position yourself away from theairbag:
•Move your seat to the rear as far as youcan while still reaching the pedalscomfortably.
•Recline the seat slightly (one or twodegrees) from the upright position.
After all occupants have adjusted their seatsand put on seatbelts, it is very important thatthey continue to sit properly. Properly seatedoccupants sit upright, lean against the seatback, and center themselves on the seatcushion, with their feet comfortably extendedon the floor. Sitting improperly can increasethe chance of injury in a crash event. Forexample, if an occupant slouches, lies down,turns sideways, sits forward, leans forwardor sideways, or puts one or both feet up, thechance of injury during a crash greatlyincreases.
Children and Airbags
WARNING: Airbags can kill or injurea child in a child restraint. Never place arear-facing child restraint in front of anactive airbag. If you must use aforward-facing child restraint in the frontseat, move the seat upon which the childrestraint is installed all the way back.
Children must always be properly restrained.Accident statistics suggest that children aresafer when properly restrained in the rearseating positions than in the front seatingposition. Failure to follow these instructionsmay increase the risk of injury in a crash.

FRONT PASSENGER SENSING
SYSTEM
WARNING: Even with advancedrestraints systems, properly restrainchildren 12 and under in a rear seatingposition. Failure to follow this couldseriously increase the risk of injury ordeath.
WARNING: Sitting improperly, out ofposition or with the seatback reclined toofar can take weight off the seat cushionand affect the decision of the passengersensing system, resulting in serious injuryor death in the event of a crash. Always situpright against your seat back, with yourfeet on the floor.
WARNING: Any alteration ormodification to the front passenger seatmay affect the performance of the frontpassenger sensing system. This couldseriously increase the risk of injury ordeath.
The front passenger sensing system uses apassenger airbag status indicator whichilluminates indicating that the frontpassenger frontal airbag is either on(enabled) or off (disabled). The indicator lampis in the center stack of the instrument panel.
Note:When you first switch the ignition on,the passenger airbag status indicator off andon lamps illuminate for a short period toconfirm it is functional.
The front passenger sensing system isdesigned to disable (will not inflate) the frontpassenger frontal airbag under certainconditions:
•The front passenger seat is unoccupied.
•The system determines an infant ispresent in a child restraint.
•A passenger takes their weight off of theseat for a period of time.
•If there is a problem with the airbagsystem or the passenger sensing system.
Even with this technology, parents arestrongly encouraged to always properlyrestrain children in the rear seat.
•When the front passenger sensingsystem disables (will not inflate) the frontpassenger frontal airbag, the passengerairbag status indicator illuminates the offlamp and stays lit to remind you that thefront passenger frontal airbag is disabled.
•If you have installed the child restraintand the passenger airbag status indicatorilluminates the on lamp, then switch yourvehicle off, remove the child restraintfrom your vehicle and reinstall therestraint following the child restraintmanufacturer's instructions.

The Safety Canopy deploys during significantside crashes or when a certain likelihood ofa rollover event is detected by the rolloversensor. The Safety Canopy is mounted tothe roof side rail sheet metal, behind theheadliner, above each row of seats. In certainsideways crashes or rollover events, theSafety Canopy will be activated, regardlessof which seats are occupied. The SafetyCanopy is designed to inflate between theside window area and occupants to furtherenhance protection provided in side impactcrashes and rollover events.
The system consists of the following:
•Safety Canopy curtain airbags above thetrim panels over the front and rear sidewindows identified by a label or wordingon the headliner or roof-pillar trim.
•A flexible headliner which opens abovethe side doors to allow air curtaindeployment
· Crash sensors and monitoringsystem with a readiness indicator.See Crash Sensors and AirbagIndicator (page 59).
Properly restrain children 12 years old andunder in the rear seats. The Safety Canopywill not interfere with children restrainedusing a properly installed child or boosterseat because it is designed to inflatedownward from the headliner above thedoors along the side window opening.

Auto-Dimming Mirror
Note: Do not block the sensors on the frontand back of the mirror. A rear centerpassenger or raised rear center headrestraint may also block light from reachingthe sensor.
The mirror dims to reduce the effect of brightlight from behind. It returns to normal whenthe bright light from behind is no longerpresent or if you shift into reverse (R).
CHILDMINDER MIRROR
On overhead consoles, the childmindermirror allows the driver to view the rearseating area.
WARNING: Do not use thechildminder mirror to view rearward traffic,do not allow rear passengers to distractyou from the driving task, and make surethe rear view mirror has a clear view ofrearward traffic. Failure to do so couldincrease the risk of a crash from an unseenvehicle, which may result in serious injury.
Pull down the rear edge of the childmindermirror to open. You can adjust thechildminder mirror to any position up to fullopen to aid in visibility.
TOLL READER
Installing the Toll Reader
Install the toll reader or radio-controlledequipment on the driver side of thewindshield behind the interior mirror.
Note:Follow the manufacturer's installationinstructions.
