NOTE
Always stop the engine and lock the
doors. In addition, to prevent theft of
valuables, do not leave them inside the
cabin.
If the key is left in the following areas
and you leave the vehicle, the doors may
be locked depending on the radio wave
conditions even if the key is left in the
vehicle.
Around the dashboard
In the storage compartments such as
the glove compartment or the center
console
Next to a communication device such
as a mobile phone
When the ignition is switched to ACC or
ON, the vehicle lock-out prevention
feature prevents you from locking
yourself out of the vehicle.
All doors and the liftgate/trunk lid will
automatically unlock if they are locked
using the power door locks with any
door open.
The vehicle lock-out prevention feature
does not operate while the ignition is
switched off.
When all doors and the liftgate/trunk lid
are locked using the power door lock
with any door or the liftgate/trunk lid
open, the closed doors and the liftgate/
trunk lid are locked. After that, when all
doors and the liftgate/trunk lid are
closed, all doors and the liftgate/trunk
lid are locked. However, if the key is
inside the vehicle, all doors and the
liftgate/trunk lid are automatically
unlocked.
(With the advanced keyless function)
The beep sound is heard for about 10
seconds to notify the driver that the key
has been left in the vehicle.
(Without the advanced keyless
function)
The horn sound is heard twice to notify
the driver that the key has been left in
the vehicle.
(Door unlock (control) system with
collision detection)
This system automatically unlocks the
doors and the liftgate/trunk lid in the
event the vehicle is involved in an
accident to allow passengers to get out
of the vehicle immediately and prevent
being trapped inside. While the ignition
is switched ON and in the event the
vehicle receives an impact strong
enough to inflate the air bags, all the
doors and the liftgate/trunk lid are
automatically unlocked after about 6
seconds have elapsed from the time of
the accident.
The doors and the liftgate/trunk lid may
not unlock depending on how an impact
is applied, the force of the impact, and
other conditions of the accident.
If door-related systems or the battery is
malfunctioning, the doors and the
liftgate/trunk lid will not unlock.

Break-In Period
No special break-in is necessary, but a few
precautions in the first 1,000 km (600
miles) may add to the performance,
economy, and life of the vehicle.
Do not race the engine.
Do not maintain one constant speed,
either slow or fast, for a long period of
time.
Do not drive constantly at full-throttle or
high engine rpm for extended periods of
time.
Avoid unnecessary hard stops.
Avoid full-throttle starts.
Saving Fuel and Protection of the Environment
How you operate your Mazda determines
how far it will travel on a tank of fuel. Use
these suggestions to help save fuel and
reduce CO
2.
Avoid long warm-ups. Once the engine
runs smoothly, begin driving.
Avoid fast starts.
Drive at lower speeds.
Anticipate when to apply the brakes
(avoid sudden braking).
Follow the maintenance schedule (page
6-4) and have an Authorized Mazda
Dealer perform inspections and
servicing.
Use the air conditioner only when
necessary.
Slow down on rough roads.
Keep the tires properly inflated.
Do not carry unnecessary weight.
Do not rest your foot on the brake pedal
while driving.
Keep the wheels in correct alignment.
Keep windows closed at high speeds.
Slow down when driving in crosswinds
and headwinds.

Never stop the engine when going down a
hill:
Stopping the engine when going down a
hill is dangerous. This causes the loss of
power steering and power brake control,
and may cause damage to the drivetrain.
Any loss of steering or braking control
could cause an accident.

Shift-Lock System
The shift-lock system prevents shifting out
of P unless the brake pedal is depressed.

To shift from P:
1. Depress and hold the brake pedal.
2. Start the engine.
3. Press and hold the lock-release button.
4. Move the selector lever.
NOTE
When the ignition is switched to ACC or
the ignition is switch ed off, the selector
lever cannot be shifted from P.
The ignition cannot be switched to OFF
if the selector lever is not in P.
▼ Shift-Lock Override
If the selector lever will not move from P
using the proper shift procedure, continue
to hold down the brake pedal.
1. Remove the shift-lock override cover
using a cloth-wrapped flat head
screwdriver.
2. Insert a screwdriver and push it down.

3. Press and hold the lock-release button.
4. Move the selector lever.
Take the vehicle to an Authorized Mazda
Dealer to have the system checked.
Transaxle Ranges
The shift position indication in the
instrument cluster illuminates. Refer to
Warning/Indicator Lights on page 4-23.
The selector lever must be in P or N to
operate the starter.
P (Park)
P locks the transaxle and prevents the
front wheels from rotating.
WA R N I N G
Always set the selector lever to P and set
the parking brake:
Only setting the selector lever to the P
position without using the parking brake to
hold the vehicle is dangerous. If P fails to
hold, the vehicle could move and cause an
accident.
CAUTION
 Shifting into P, N or R while the vehicle is
moving can damage your transaxle.
 Shifting into a driving gear or reverse
when the engine is running faster than
idle can damage the transaxle.
R (Reverse)
In position R, the vehicle moves only
backward. You must be at a complete stop
before shifting to or from R, except under
rare circumstances as explained in
Rocking the Vehicle (page 3-47).

CAUTION
Each tire, including the spare (if provided), should be checked monthly when cold and
inflated to the inflation pressure recommended by the vehicle manufacturer on the vehicle
placard or tire inflation pressure label. (If your vehicle has tires of a
different size than the
size indicated on the vehicle placard or tire in flation pressure label, you should determine
the proper tire inflation pressure for those tires.)
As an added safety feature, your vehicle has been equipped with a tire pressure monitoring
system ( TPMS) that illuminates a low tire pressu re telltale when one or more of your tires is
significantly
under-inflated. Accordingly, when the low tire
pressure telltale illuminates, you
should stop and check your tires as soon as possible, and inflate them to the proper
pressure. Driving on a significantly under-infla ted tire causes the tire to overheat and can
lead to tire failure. Under-inflation also reduces fuel
efficiency and tire tread life, and may
affect the vehicle's handling and stopping ability.
Please note that the TPMS is not a substitu te for proper tire maintenance, and it is the
driver's responsibility to maintain correct tire pressure, even if under-inflation has not
reached the level to trigger illumination of the TPMS low tire pressure telltale.
Your vehicle has also been equipped with a TPMS malfunction indicator to indicate when
the system is not operating properly.
The TPMS malfunction indicator is combined wi th the low tire pressure telltale. When the
system detects a malfunction, the telltale will flash for approximately one minute and then
remain continuously illuminate d. This sequence will continue upon subsequent vehicle
start-ups as long as the malfunction exists. When the malfunction indicator is illuminated,
the system may not be able to detect or signal low tire pressure as intended. TPMS
malfunctions may occur for a variety of reasons, including the installation of replacement
or alternate tires or wheels on the vehicle that prevent the TPMS from functioning properly.
Always check the TPMS malfunction telltale after replacing one or more tires or wheels on
your vehicle to ensure that the replacement or alternate tires and wheels allow the TPMS to
continue to function properly.
 To avoid false readings, the system samples for a little while before indicating a problem. As
a result it will not instantane ously register a rapid tire
deflation or blow out.
NOTE
Because this system detects slight changes in tire conditions, the timing of the warning may
be faster or slower in the following cases:
The size, manufacturer, or the type of
tires is different from the specification.
The size, manufacturer, or the type of a tire is different from the others, or the level of tire
wear is excessively different between them.
A run-flat tire, studless tire, snow tire, or tire chains are used.

WA R N I N G
Never touch the glass portion of a halogen
bulb with your bare hands and always
wear eye protection when handling or
working around the bulbs:
When a halogen bulb breaks, it is
dangerous. These bulbs contain
pressurized gas. If one is broken, it will
explode and serious injuries could be
caused by the flying glass.
If the glass portion is touched with bare
hands, body oil could cause the bulb to
overheat and explode when lit.
Always keep halogen bulbs out of the reach
of children:
Playing with a halogen bulb is dangerous.
Serious injuries could be caused by
dropping a halogen bulb or breaking it
some other way.
CAUTION
When removing the lens or lamp unit using
a flathead screwdriver, make sure that the
flathead screwdriver does not contact the
interior terminal. If the flathead screwdriver
contacts the terminal, a short circuit may
occur.
NOTE
To replace the bulb, contact an
Authorized Mazda Dealer.
If the halogen bulb is accidentally
touched, it should be cleaned with
rubbing alcohol before being used.
Use the protective cover and carton for
the replacement bulb to dispose of the
old bulb promptly and out of the reach
of children.
▼Replacing Exterior Light Bulbs
Headlights (With LED headlights),
Daytime running lights/Parking lights
(With LED headlights), Fog lights*
The LED bulb cannot be replaced as a
single unit because it is an integrated unit.
The LED bulb has to be replaced with the
unit. We recommend an Authorized
Mazda Dealer when the replacement is
necessary.
Headlights (With halogen headlights)
Low-beam bulbs
1. If you are changing the right bulb, start
the engine, turn the steering wheel all
the way to the left, and turn off engine.
If you are changing the left bulb, turn
the steering wheel to the right, and turn
off engine.
2. Make sure the headlight switch is off.
3. Pull the center of each plastic retainer and remove the retainers.

License plate lights
4–Door
1. Make sure the ignition is switched off,and the headlight switch is off.
2. Pull the center of each plastic retainer
and remove the retainers.
3. Peel back the trunk lid trim.

4. Disconnect the connector from the unit by pressing the tab on the connector
with your finger and pulling the
connector.

5. Turn the socket and bulb assembly
counterclockwise and remove it.
6. Disconnect the bulb from the socket.
7. Install the new bulb in the reverseorder of the removal procedure.
5–Door
1. Make sure the ignition is switched off, and the headligh t switch is off.
2. Wrap a flathead screwdriver with a
soft cloth to prevent damage to the
lens, and then remove the lens by
carefully prying on the edge of the lens
with a flathead screwdriver.
3. Disconnect the bulb by pulling it out.
4. Install the new bulb in the reverse
order of the removal procedure.

Trunk light (4–Door)
1. Press both sides of the lens cap to
remove it.
2. Disconnect the bulb by pulling it out.
3. Install the new bulb in the reverseorder of the removal procedure.
Luggage compartment light (5–Door)
1. Wrap a small flathead screwdriver with a soft cloth to prevent damage to the
lens and remove the lens by carefully
prying on the edge of the lens with the
flathead screwdriver.

2. Disconnect the connector from the unit
by pressing the tab on the connector
with your finger and pulling the
connector.

3. Disconnect the bulb by pulling it out.
4. Install the new bulb in the reverseorder of the removal procedure.

To remove the spare tire
1. Lift the trunk/luggage compartmentmat.

Store the spare tire in the reverse order of
removal. After storing, verify that the
spare tire is stored securely.
Changing a Flat Tire
NOTE
If the following occurs while driving, it
could indicate a flat tire.
Steering becomes difficult.
The vehicle begins to vibrate
excessively.
The vehicle pulls in one direction.
If you have a flat tire, drive slowly to a
level spot that is well off the road and out
of the way of traffic to change the tire.
Stopping in traffic or on the shoulder of a
busy road is dangerous.
WA R N I N G
Be sure to follow the directions for
changing a tire:
Changing a tire is dangerous if not done
properly. The vehicle can slip off the jack
and seriously injure someone.
No person should place any portion of their
body under a vehicle that is supported by a
jack.
Never allow anyone inside a vehicle
supported by a jack:
Allowing someone to remain in a vehicle
supported by a jack is dangerous. The
occupant could cause the vehicle to fall
resulting in serious injury.
NOTE
Make sure the jack is well lubricated
before using it.
1. Park on a hard, level surface off the right-of-way and firml y set the parking
brake.

Fold the rear seatback forward on the
right side of the rear seat.

Unlock the rear seatback on the left
side and assure a clearance to pass the
belt.
(One-piece folding type seat)
Unlock the rear seatback and assure a
clearance to pass the belt.
11. Pass the belt through the rear seatback as shown in the figure.
After passing the be lt through, return
the rear seatback to the original
position.
