to the Forward Sensing Camera
(FSC) or front radar sensor are
being displayed on the

xThe SBS may operate under the
following conditions.
xThere is an object in the road at
the entrance to a curve (including
guardrails and snow banks).
xPassing an approaching vehicle
while rounding a curve.
xWhen crossing a narrow bridge,
and passing through low gates,
narrow gates, car washing
machines, or tunnels.
xWhen passing through a toll gate.xWhen entering an underground
parking area.
xThere is a metal object, bump, or a
protruding object on the road.
xIf you suddenly come close to a
vehicle ahead.
xThere is an animal, wall, or tree.xNotifies the driver with a warning
indication on the multi-information
display and the active driving display
(vehicles with active driving display)
while the system is operating.
xIf a malfunction is detected or the
system temporarily stops the
function due to dirty sensors (such as
radar sensor or Forward Sensing
Camera (FSC)), the i-ACTIVSENSE
warning indication/warning light
turns on and a message is displayed
on the multi-information display.
xOn a manual transmission vehicle,
the engine stops if the clutch pedal is
not depressed when the vehicle is
stopped by the SBS brake operation.
xIf the vehicle is stopped by the SBS
brake operation and the brake pedal
is not depressed, the SBS brake is
automatically released after about 2
seconds.

collision with a vehicle ahead, the
collision warning sound is activated
continuously and a warning is
displayed on the multi-information

(reverse) position.

xThe vehicle speed is between
about 2 to 8 km/h (2 to 4 mph).
xThe SBS-R is not turned off.xThe DSC is not malfunctioning.xIn the following cases, the rear
ultrasonic sensor and rear camera
cannot detect obstructions and the
SBS-R may not operate.
xThe height of the obstruction is
low such as low walls or trucks
with low loading platforms.
xThe height of the obstruction is
high such as trucks with high
loading platforms.
xThe obstruction is small.xThe obstruction is thin such as a
signpost.
xThe surface of the obstruction is
not pointed vertically relative to
the vehicle.
xThe obstruction is soft such as a
hanging curtain or snow stuck to a
vehicle.
xThe obstruction is shaped
irregularly.
xThe obstruction is extremely close.xIn the following cases, the rear
ultrasonic sensor and rear camera
cannot detect obstructions correctly
and the
SBS-R may not operate.
xSomething is stuck on the bumper
near a rear ultrasonic sensor.
xThe brake or accelerator pedal is
operated.
xThere is another obstruction near
one obstruction.
xDuring inclement weather such as
rain, fog and snow.
xHigh or low humidity.xHigh or low temperaturesxStrong winds.xThe path of travel is not flat.xHeavy luggage is loaded in the
luggage compartment or on the
rear seat.
xObjects such as a wireless aerial,
fog light, or illuminated number
plate is installed near a rear
ultrasonic sensor.
xThe orientation of a rear ultrasonic
sensor has deviated for reasons
such as a collision.
xThe vehicle is affected by other
sound waves such as the horn,
engine noise, ultrasonic sensor of
another vehicle.
xIn the following cases, a rear
ultrasonic sensor and rear camera
may detect something as a target
obstruction which could cause the
SBS-R system to operate.
xDriving on a steep slope.xWheel blocks.xHanging curtains, gate poles such
as at toll gates and railroad
crossing.
xWhen travelling near objects such
as foliage, barriers, vehicles, walls,
and fences along a road.
xWhen driving off-road in areas
where there is grass and forage.
xWhen passing through low gates,
narrow gates, car washing
machines, and tunnels.
xA trailer is connected.xA bright light source such as
sunlight hits the rear camera.
xThe surroundings are dark.

xAn exterior accessory such as a
bicycle carrier is installed around a
rear ultrasonic sensor.
x(Manual transmission)
If the vehicle is stopped by the SBS-R
operation and the clutch pedal is not
depressed, the engine stops.
xWhen the system operates, the user
is notified by the multi-information
display.
xThe collision warning beep sounds
intermittently while the SBS-R brake
is operating.
xIf the vehicle is stopped by the SBS-R
operation and the brake pedal is not
depressed, displaying in meter
“Emergency Braking Activated.

xIf a Mazda genuine trailer hitch is
used, the SBS-R is automatically
turned off.
xTurn off the SBS-R system while
pulling a trailer or while an accessory

the rear of the vehicle.

▼Stopping the Smart Brake Support
[Rear] (SBS-R) System Operation
The SBS-R can be changed to
inoperable.
Refer to the Settings section in the
Mazda Connect Owner's Manual.
When the SBS-R is cancelled, the SBS
OFF indicator light turns on.
NOTE
xWhen the ignition is switched OFF
while the SBS-R is cancelled, the
SBS-R is automatically enabled the
next time the ignition is switched
ON.
xWhen the SBS-R is cancelled, the
Smart Brake Support [Rear Crossing]
(SBS-RC) is also cancelled.

¾If cracks or damage caused by flying
gravel or debris is visible around a
rear radar and rear camera, stop
using the SBS-RC system
immediately and have your vehicle
inspected by an expert repairer (we
recommend an Authorised Mazda
Repairer). If the vehicle continues to
be driven with cracks or scratch
marks left around an ultrasonic
sensor, the system may operate
unnecessarily and cause an
unexpected accident.

¾Consult an expert repairer (we
recommend an Authorised Mazda
Repairer) for rear bumper
replacement.
Do not modify the suspension:
If the vehicle height or inclination is
changed, the
SBS-RC system may not
operate correctly because it cannot
detect obstructions correctly.
Do not apply a strong force to a rear
radar and rear camera:
When washing the vehicle, do not
spray highly pressurised water against a
rear radar and rear camera, or rub it
strongly. In addition, do not hit the rear
bumper forcefully when loading and
unloading cargo. Otherwise, the
sensors may not detect obstructions
correctly which could cause the
SBS-RC system to not operate
normally, or it could operate
unnecessarily.
NOTE
xThe SBS-RC system will operate
under the following conditions.
xThe engine is running.
xThe shift lever (manual
transmission vehicle) or the
selector lever (automatic
transmission vehicle) is in the R
(reverse) position.
xi-ACTIVSENSE warning indication/
warning light is not displayed in the
multi-information display.
xThe vehicle speed is under about
10 km/h (6 mph).
xThe vehicle speed of an
approaching vehicle is about 3
km/h (2 mph) or faster.
xThe SBS-R is not turned off.xThe DSC is not malfunctioning.xIn the following cases, the
i-ACTIVSENSE warning indication/
warning light turns on and operation
of the system is stopped. If the
i-ACTIVSENSE warning indication/
warning light remains illuminated,
have the vehicle inspected at an
expert repairer (we recommend an
Authorised Mazda Repairer) as soon
as possible.
xSome problem with the system
including the SBS-RC system.
xA large deviation in the installation
position of a rear side radar sensor
on the vehicle has occurred.
xThere is a large accumulation of
snow or ice on the rear bumper
near a rear side radar sensor.
xDriving on snow-covered roads for
long periods.
xThe temperature near the radar
sensors becomes extremely hot
due to driving for long periods on
slopes during the summer.
xThe battery voltage has decreased.xUnder the following conditions, the
rear side radar sensor cannot detect
target objects or it may be difficult to
detect them.

Operation
The SBS-RC can be changed to

To temporarily cancel the system, use
one of these methods:
xSlightly depress the brake pedal.xPress the CANCEL switch.x(Manual transmission)
Depress the clutch pedal.
If the RES switch is pressed when the
vehicle speed is 30 km/h (19 mph) or
higher, the system reverts to the
previously set speed.
NOTE
xIf any of the following conditions
occur, the cruise control system is
temporarily cancelled.
xEven when the brake pedal is
slightly depressed.
xThe DSC is operating.xThere is a problem in the system.xAny of the doors is opened.xThe driver's seat belt is unfastened.xThe parking brake is applied.x(Automatic transmission)
The selector lever is in the P or N

x(Manual transmission)
The shift lever is in the neutral
position.
xWhen the cruise control system is
temporarily cancelled by even one of
the applicable cancel conditions, the
speed cannot be re-set.
x(Automatic transmission)
The cruise control cannot be
cancelled while driving in manual
mode (selector lever shifted from D
to M position). Therefore, engine
braking will not be applied even if
the transmission is shifted down to a
lower gear. If deceleration is
required, lower the set speed or
depress the brake pedal.

The petrol particulate filter collects and
removes most of the particulate matter
(PM) in the exhaust gas of a petrol
engine.
PM collected by the petrol particulate
filter is cleared during normal driving ,
however, PM may not be removed and
the petrol particulate filter warning
indication/warning light may
illuminate under the following
conditions:
xIf the vehicle is driven at 20 km/h
(12 mph) or less continuously.
xIf the vehicle is repeatedly driven for
a short period of time (30 minute or
less) or driven while the engine is
cold.
xIf the vehicle is idled for a long time.

▼Diesel Particulate Filter
The diesel particulate filter collects and
removes most of the particulate matter
(PM) in the exhaust gas of a diesel
engine.
PM collected by the diesel particulate
filter is cleared during normal driving ,
however, PM may not be removed and
the diesel particulate filter warning
indication/warning light may
illuminate under the following
conditions:
xIf the vehicle is driven at 15 km/h (9
mph) or less continuously.
xIf the vehicle is repeatedly driven for
a short period of time (10 minute or
less) or driven while the engine is
cold.
xIf the vehicle is idled for a long time.

xThe sensor area is frozen (Returns to normal operation when the ice is thawed).xThe sensor is covered by a hand.xThe sensor is excessively shocked.xThe vehicle is excessively tilted.xUnder extremely hot or cold weather conditions.xThe vehicle is driven on bumps, inclines, gravel, grating , or grass covered roads.xAnything which generates ultrasonic waves such as another vehicle's horn, the
engine sound of a motorcycle, the air brake sound of a large-sized vehicle, or
another vehicle's sensors approaches the vehicle.
xThe vehicle is driven in heavy rain or in road conditions causing water-splash.xA commercially-available wing pole or an aerial for a radio transmitter is
installed to the vehicle.
xThe vehicle is moving towards a tall or square curbstone, or a steep grade.xAn obstruction is too close to the sensor.xThe vehicle is moving towards an uneven wall or stairs.xThere are multiple obstructions.xThe vehicle is driven in a place with low ceilings.xObstructions under the bumper cannot be detected. Obstructions which are
lower than the sensor or thin may not be detected even though they were
detected once.
xThe following types of obstructions may not be detected:
xThin objects such as wire, rope or polesxThings which absorb sonic waves easily such as cotton or snowxAngular shaped objectsxVery tall objects, and those which are wide at the topxSmall, short objectsxAlways have the system inspected at an expert repairer (we recommend an
Authorised Mazda Repairer) if any shock is applied to the bumpers, even in a
minor accident. If the sensors are deviated, they cannot detect obstructions.
xThe system may have a malfunction if the indicator light does not turn on even
when the parking sensor switch is turned on. Have your vehicle inspected by an
expert repairer (we recommend an Authorised Mazda Repairer).
xThe system may have a malfunction if a message indicating a system malfunction is
displayed. Have your vehicle inspected by an expert repairer (we recommend an
Authorised Mazda Repairer).
xA message may be displayed even when the ambient temperature is extremely
cold, or mud, ice, or snow adheres to the sensor area. Remove any foreign matter
from the sensor area.
xWhen installing a trailer hitch, consult an expert repairer (we recommend an
Authorised Mazda Repairer).
xIf a Mazda genuine trailer hitch is used, the rear side of the parking sensor system
is automatically turned
off.

▼Operating Tips
xOperate the air-conditioning system
with the engine running.
xTo prevent the battery from being
discharged, do not leave the fan
control dial/switch on for a long
period of time with the ignition
switched ON when the engine is not
running.
x(With i-stop)
The
airflow amount may decrease
slightly while the i-stop function is
operating.
xClear all obstructions such as leaves,
snow and ice from the bonnet and
the air inlet in the cowl grille to
improve the system efficiency.
xUse the air-conditioning system to
defog the windows and dehumidify
the air.
xThe recirculate mode should be used
when driving through tunnels or
while in a
traffic jam, or when you
would like to shut off outside air for
quick cooling of the interior.
xUse the outside air position for
ventilation or windscreen defrosting.
xIf the vehicle has been parked in
direct sunlight during hot weather,
open the windows to let warm air
escape, then run the air-conditioning
system.
xRun the air conditioner about 10
minutes at least once a month to
keep internal parts lubricated.
xHave the air conditioner checked
before the weather gets hot. Lack of
refrigerant may make the air
conditioner less efficient.
The refrigerant specifications are
indicated on a label attached to the
inside of the engine compartment. If
the wrong type of refrigerant is used,
it could result in a serious
malfunction of the air conditioner.
Consult a professional, government
certified repairer for the inspection
or repair because a special device is
required for the air conditioner
maintenance.
