Essential Safety Equipment
Seat Belt Systems
Do not operate a vehicle with a damaged seat belt:
Using a damaged seat belt is dangerous. An accident could damage the belt webbing
of the seat belt in use. A damaged seat belt cannot provide adequate protection in a
collision. Have an Authorized Mazda Dealer inspect all seat belt systems in use during an
accident before they are used again.

Have your seat belts changed immediately if the pretensioner or load limiter has been
expended:
Always have an Authorized Mazda Dealer immediately inspect the seat belt pretensioners
and air bags after any collision. Like the air bags, the seat belt pretensioners and load
limiters will only function once and must be replaced after any collision that caused them
to deploy. A seat belt with an expended pretensioner or load limiter is still better than
wearing no seat belt at all; however, if the seat belt pretensioners and load limiters are
not replaced, the risk of injury in a collision will increase.

Positioning the Shoulder Portion of the Seat Belt:
Improper positioning of the shoulder portion of the seat belt is dangerous. Always make
sure the shoulder portion of the seat belt is positioned across your shoulder and near your
neck, but never under your arm, on your neck, or on your upper arm.

Positioning the Lap Portion of the Seat Belt:
The lap portion of the seat belt worn too high is dangerous. In a collision, this would
concentrate the impact force directly on the abdominal area, causing serious injury. Wear
the lap portion of the belt snugly and as low as possible.

In a rollover crash, an unbelted person is signifi cantly more likely to die than a person
wearing a seat belt.


CAUTION
Belt retraction may become diffi cult if the belts and rings are soiled, so try to keep them
clean. For more details about cleaning the seat belts, refer to "Seat Belt Maintenance"
(page 6-69 ).

To open the window to the desired
position, lightly hold down the switch.
To close the window to the desired
position, lightly pull up the switch.

Auto-opening/closing
To fully open the window automatically,
press the switch completely down.
To fully close the window automatically,
pull the switch completely up.

To stop the window partway, pull or press
the switch in the opposite direction and
then release it. Power window system initialization
procedure
If the battery was disconnected during
vehicle maintenance, or for other reasons
(such as a switch continues to be operated
after the window is fully open/closed),
the window will not fully open and close
automatically.
Resetting of the automatic function can
be performed using the master control
switches or each passenger door switch.
The power window auto function reset
procedure can be done on all door
switches. The power window auto function
will only resume on the power window
that has been reset.

1. Switch the ignition ON.
2. Make sure that the power window lock
switch located on the driver's door is
not depressed.
3. Press the switch and fully open the
window.
4. Pull up the switch to fully close the
window and continue holding the
switch for about 2 seconds after the
window fully closed.
5. Repeat Steps 3-4 for the front
passenger power window while seated
in the front passenger seat.
6. Repeat Steps 3-4 for both the left and
right rear power windows while seated
in the rear seat.
7. Make sure that the power windows
operate correctly using the door
switches.

After the system has been re-initialized,
each passenger window can be fully
opened or closed automatically using the
master control switches.

Operating the Driver's Side Power
Window (Type B)
Normal opening/closing
To open the window to the desired
position, lightly hold down the switch.
To close the window to the desired
position, lightly pull up the switch.

Jam-safe window
If a person's hands, head or an object
blocks the window during the auto-closing
operation, the window will stop and open
halfway.
WARNING
Make sure nothing blocks the window
just before it reaches the fully closed
position or while holding up the power
window switch:
Blocking the power window just before
it reaches the fully closed position or
while holding up the power window
switch is dangerous.
In this case, the jam-safe function
cannot prevent the window from
closing all the way. If fi ngers are
caught, serious injuries could occur.

Break-In Period
No special break-in is necessary, but a
few precautions in the ¿ rst 1,000 km
(600 miles) may add to the performance,
economy, and life of the vehicle.
 


y Do not race the engine.



y Do not maintain one constant speed,
either slow or fast, for a long period of
time.
 


y Do not drive constantly at full-throttle or
high engine rpm for extended periods of
time.
 


y Avoid unnecessary hard stops.



y Avoid full-throttle starts.



y Do not tow a trailer.
Saving Fuel and
Protection
of the Environment
How you operate your Mazda determines
how far it will travel on a tank of fuel. Use
these suggestions to help save fuel and
reduce CO2.
 


y Avoid long warm-ups. Once the engine
runs smoothly, begin driving.
 


y Avoid fast starts.



y Drive at lower speeds.



y Anticipate when to apply the brakes
(avoid sudden braking).
 


y Follow the maintenance schedule
(page 6-4 ) and have an Authorized
Mazda Dealer perform inspections and
servicing.
 


y Use the air conditioner only when
necessary.
 


y Slow down on rough roads.



y Keep the tires properly inÀ ated.



y Do not carry unnecessary weight.



y Do not rest your foot on the brake pedal
while driving.
 


y Keep the wheels in correct alignment.



y Keep windows closed at high speeds.



y Slow down when driving in crosswinds
and headwinds.

WARNING
Never stop the engine when going down
a hill:
Stopping the engine when going
down a hill is dangerous. This causes
the loss of power steering and power
brake control, and may cause damage
to the drivetrain. Any loss of steering
or braking control could cause an
accident.

Turbocharger Information
CAUTION
 


¾ After driving at freeway speeds or up a long hill, idle the engine at least 30 seconds before
stopping it. Otherwise, the turbocharger could be damaged.
 


¾ Racing or over-revving the engine, particularly after it's just been started, can damage the
turbocharger.
 


¾ To protect the engine from damage, the engine is designed so that it cannot be raced just
after starting it in extremely cold weather.

The turbocharger greatly enhances engine power. Its advanced design provides improved
operation and requires minimum maintenance.

To get the most from it, observe the following.

1. Change engine oil and ¿ lter according to Scheduled Maintenance (page 6-4 ).
2. Use only recommended engine oil (page 6-26 ). Extra additives are NOT
recommended.

Towing
Parking
Always make sure the tires of the trailer and the tow vehicle are blocked while parked.
Apply the parking brake ¿ rmly and put the transaxle in P.
Avoid parking on an incline, but if you must, follow these instructions:
1. Depress and hold down the brake pedal.
2. Have a helper put wheel blocks against the downhill side of all vehicle and trailer tires.
3. Then release the brake pedal slowly until the blocks bear the load.
 

y
 If the grade is downhill, turn the steering wheel so that the front of the front tires face
the curb.
 

y
 If it is uphill, face the rear of the front tires against the curb.
4. Firmly apply the parking brake.
5. Shift the transaxle into P, and stop the engine.

To restart after parking on an incline:
1. With the transaxle in P, start the engine. (Be sure to depress and hold the brake pedal.)
2. Shift into gear.
3. Release the parking brake (also the foot brake) and pull away from the wheel blocks.
Stop; apply the parking brake and shift into P.
4. Have a helper retrieve the wheel blocks.

Fuel consumption
Trailer towing causes higher fuel consumption.
Maintenance
If you tow a trailer frequently, have your vehicle serviced as shown in Scheduled
Maintenance (page 6-4 ).
