Keys
A code number is stamped on the plate
attached to the key set; detach this plate
and store it in a safe place (not in the
vehicle) for use if you need to make a
replacement key (auxiliary key).
Also write down the code number and
keep it in a separate safe and convenient
place, but not in the vehicle.
If your key (auxiliary key) is lost, consult
your Authorized Mazda Dealer and have
your code number ready.
NOTE
The driver must carry the key to ensure the
system functions properly.

To use the auxiliary key, pull out the
auxiliary key from the transmitter while
pressing the knob.

Keyless Entry System
This system uses the key buttons to
remotely lock and unlock the doors and
the liftgate, and opens/closes the liftgate.
The system can start the engine without
having to take the key out of your purse or
pocket.
It can also help you signal for attention or
help.
Operating the theft-deterrent system is
also possible on theft-deterrent system-
equipped vehicles.
System malfunctions or warnings are
indicated by the following warning lights
or beeps.
For vehicles with the type A instrument
cluster, check the displayed message for
more information and, if necessary, have
the vehicle inspected at an Authorized
Mazda Dealer, according to the indication.

Panic button
If you witness from a distance someone
attempting to break into or damage your
vehicle, press and hold the panic button
to activate the vehicle's alarm. Call
emergency services if necessary.
N O T E
The panic button will work whether any
door or the liftgate is open or closed.
(Turning on the alarm)
Pressing the panic button for 1 second or
more will trigger the alarm for about 2
minutes and 30 seconds, and the following
will occur:
y The horn sounds intermittently.
y The hazard warning lights À ash.
(Turning off the alarm)
The alarm stops by pressing any button on
the key.
Operational Range
The system operates only when the driver
is in the vehicle or within operational
range while the key is being carried.
Starting the Engine
N O T E
y Starting the engine may be possible
even if the key is outside of the vehicle
and extremely close to a door and
window, however, always start the
engine from the driver's seat.
If the vehicle is started and the key
is not in the vehicle, the vehicle will
not restart after it is shut off and the
ignition is switched to off.
y The luggage compartment is out of the
assured operational range, however,
if the key (transmitter) is operable the
engine will start.

Engine Exhaust (Carbon monoxide)
WARNING
Do not drive your vehicle if you smell exhaust gas inside the vehicle:
Engine exhaust gas is dangerous. This gas contains carbon monoxide (CO), which is
colorless, odorless, and poisonous. When inhaled, it can cause loss of consciousness and
death. If you smell exhaust gas inside the vehicle, keep all windows fully open and contact
an Authorized Mazda Dealer immediately.
Do not run the engine when inside an enclosed area:
Running the engine inside an enclosed area, such as a garage, is dangerous. Exhaust
gas, which contains poisonous carbon monoxide, could easily enter the cabin. Loss of
consciousness or even death could occur.
Open the windows or adjust the heating or cooling system to draw fresh air when
idling the engine:
Exhaust gas is dangerous. When the vehicle is stopped with the windows closed and
the engine running for a long time even in an open area, exhaust gas, which contains
poisonous carbon monoxide, could enter the cabin. Loss of consciousness or even death
could occur.
Clear snow from underneath and around your vehicle, particularly the tail pipe, before
starting the engine:
Running the engine when a vehicle is stopped in deep snow is dangerous. The exhaust
pipe could be blocked by the snow, allowing exhaust gas to enter the cabin. Because
exhaust gas contains poisonous carbon monoxide, it could cause loss of consciousness or
even death to occupants in the cabin.

Jam-safe window
If a person's hands, head or an object
blocks the window during the manual
closing operation or the auto-closing
operation, the window will stop and open
halfway.
WARNING
Make sure nothing blocks the window
just before it reaches the fully closed
position or while fully holding up the
power window switch:
Blocking the power window just before
it reaches the fully closed position
or while fully holding up the power
window switch is dangerous.
In this case, the jam-safe function
cannot prevent the window from
closing all the way. If fi ngers are
caught, serious injuries could occur.
N O T E
y Depending on driving conditions, a
closing power window could stop and
start opening when the window feels
a shock that is similar to something
blocking it.
In the event the jam-safe function
activates and the power window cannot
be closed automatically, pull and hold
the switch fully and the window will
close.
y The jam-safe window function does not
operate until the system has been reset.
Engine-off power window operation
The power window can be operated for
about 40 seconds after the ignition is
switched from ON to off with all doors
closed. If any door is opened, the power
window will stop operating.

For engine-off operation of the power

Jam-safe Moonroof
If a person's hands, head or an object
blocks the moonroof while it is closing,
the moonroof will stop and move in the
reverse direction.
WARNING
Make sure nothing blocks the moonroof
just before it reaches the fully closed
position:
Blocking the moonroof just before
it reaches the closed position is
dangerous.
In this case, the jam-safe function
cannot prevent the moonroof from
closing. If fi ngers are caught, serious
injuries could occur.
N O T E
y Depending on driving conditions, a
closing moonroof could stop and start
opening when the moonroof feels a
shock that is similar to something
blocking it.
y The moonroof's jam-safe function does
not function while the moonroof is
initializing.
Sunshade
The sunshade can be opened and closed
by hand.
The sunshade opens automatically when
the moonroof is opened, but must be
closed by hand.
Sunshade
CAUTION
¾ The sunshade does not tilt. To avoid
damaging the sunshade, do not push up
on it.
¾ Do not close the sunshade while the
moonroof is opening. Trying to force the
sunshade closed could damage it.

N O T E
y The theft deterrent system can also be
armed by activating the auto relock
function with all the doors, the liftgate
and the hood closed.
Refer to Transmitter on page 3-4 .
y The system will disarm if one of the
following operations takes place within
20 seconds after pressing the lock
button:
y Unlocking any door.
y Opening any door.
y Opening the hood.
y Switching the ignition ON.
To rearm the system, do the arming
procedure again.
y When the doors are locked by pressing
the lock button on the transmitter
or using the auxiliary key while the
theft-deterrent system is armed, the
hazard warning lights will À ash once to
indicate that the system is armed.
To Turn Off an Armed System
An armed system can be turned off using
any one of the following methods:
y Pressing the unlock button on the
transmitter.
y Starting the engine with the push button
start.
y (With the advanced keyless function)
Pressing a request switch on the doors.
The hazard warning lights will À ash twice.
N O T E
When the doors are unlocked by pressing
the unlock button on the transmitter while
the theft-deterrent system is turned off, the
hazard warning lights will À ash twice to
indicate that the system is turned off.
To Stop the Alarm
A triggered alarm can be turned off using
any one of the following methods:
y Pressing the unlock button on the
transmitter.
y Starting the engine with the push button
start.
y (With the advanced keyless function)
y
Pressing a request switch on the doors.
y
Pressing the electric liftgate opener
while the key is being carried.
y Pressing the power liftgate button on
the transmitter .
The hazard warning lights will À ash twice.

Break-In Period
No special break-in is necessary, but a
few precautions in the ¿ rst 1,000 km
(600 miles) may add to the performance,
economy, and life of the vehicle.
y Do not race the engine.
y Do not maintain one constant speed,
either slow or fast, for a long period of
time.
y Do not drive constantly at full-throttle or
high engine rpm for extended periods of
time.
y Avoid unnecessary hard stops.
y Avoid full-throttle starts.
y Do not tow a trailer.
Saving Fuel and
Protection
of the Environment
How you operate your Mazda determines
how far it will travel on a tank of fuel. Use
these suggestions to help save fuel and
reduce CO2.
y Avoid long warm-ups. Once the engine
runs smoothly, begin driving.
y Avoid fast starts.
y Drive at lower speeds.
y Anticipate when to apply the brakes
(avoid sudden braking).
y Follow the maintenance schedule
(page 6-4 ) and have an Authorized
Mazda Dealer perform inspections and
servicing.
y Use the air conditioner only when
necessary.
y Slow down on rough roads.
y Keep the tires properly in À ated.
y Do not carry unnecessary weight.
y Do not rest your foot on the brake pedal
while driving.
y Keep the wheels in correct alignment.
y Keep windows closed at high speeds.
y Slow down when driving in crosswinds
and headwinds.
WARNING
Never stop the engine when going down
a hill:
Stopping the engine when going
down a hill is dangerous. This causes
the loss of power steering and power
brake control, and may cause damage
to the drivetrain. Any loss of steering
or braking control could cause an
accident.

Turbocharger Information
CAUTION
¾ After driving at freeway speeds or up a long hill, idle the engine at least 30 seconds before
stopping it. Otherwise, the turbocharger could be damaged.
¾ Racing or over-revving the engine, particularly after it's just been started, can damage the
turbocharger.
¾ To protect the engine from damage, the engine is designed so that it cannot be raced just
after starting it in extremely cold weather.
The turbocharger greatly enhances engine power. Its advanced design provides improved
operation and requires minimum maintenance.
To get the most from it, observe the following.
1. Change engine oil and ¿ lter according to Scheduled Maintenance (page 6-4 ).
2. Use only recommended engine oil (page 6-26 ). Extra additives are NOT
recommended.

Trailer Towing Tips
y Verify that your Mazda maintains a near-normal attitude when a loaded or unloaded trailer
is connected. Do not drive if it has an abnormal front-up or front-down position. Inspect
for incorrect tongue load, worn suspension parts, and trailer overloading.
y Make sure the trailer is properly loaded and the cargo is secure to prevent it from shifting.
y Make sure the mirrors conform to all government regulations. If they do not, install
required rear view mirrors appropriate for towing purposes.
The three main causes of vehicle-trailer accidents are driver error, excessive speed, and
improper trailer loading.
Before driving
y Have your cooling and braking system checked by an Authorized Mazda Dealer.
y Before starting out, inspect the operation of all vehicle and trailer lights and all vehicle-
to-trailer connections. Stop and re-inspect all lights and connections after driving a short
distance.
Driving
y Your Mazda will handle differently with a trailer in tow, so practice turning, backing, and
stopping in a traf ¿ c-free area.
y Take time to get accustomed to the extra weight and length.
y Allow more room between your vehicle and the one in front because braking distance
increases with a trailer. For each 16 km/h (10 mph) of speed, allow at least one vehicle
and trailer length between your Mazda and the vehicle ahead.
y Avoid jerky starts or sudden acceleration.
y Avoid sudden braking. It may cause loss of control and result in jackkni ¿ ng, especially so
on wet or slippery roads.
y Shift the shift lever to the D position when towing a trailer in hilly terrain or when heavily
loaded.
The D position will allow operating the vehicle without frequent shifting.
Lane changes and turning
Avoid quick lane changes, sudden turns, and tight turns. Slow down before turning to avoid
the need of sudden braking.
A turning trailer will make a tighter arc than the tow vehicle. Compensate with turns that are
larger than normal.
