Useful information
iThis Operator's Manual describes all
models and all standard and optional equip- ment of your vehicle available at the time of
publication of the Operator's Manual.
Country-specific differences are possible.
Please note that your vehicle may not be
equipped with all features described. This
also applies to safety-related systems and
functions.

SmartKey
Important safety notes
GWARNING
If children are left unsupervised in the vehicle,
they could:
R open the doors, thus endangering other
people or road users.
R get out and disrupt traffic.
R operate the vehicle's equipment.
Additionally, children could set the vehicle in
motion if, for example, they:
R release the parking brake.
R shifting the automatic transmission out of
park position P
R Start the engine.
There is a risk of an accident and injury.
When leaving the vehicle, always take the
SmartKey with you and lock the vehicle. Never
leave children or animals unattended in the
vehicle. Always keep the SmartKey out of
reach of children.
GWARNING
If you attach heavy or large objects to the
SmartKey, the SmartKey could be uninten-
tionally turned in the ignition lock. This could
cause the engine to be switched off. There is a risk of an accident.
Do not attach any heavy or large objects to the SmartKey. Remove any bulky key rings before
inserting the SmartKey into the ignition lock.
!Keep the SmartKey away from strong
magnetic fields. Otherwise, the remote
control function could be affected.
Strong magnetic fields can occur in the
vicinity of powerful electrical installations.
Do not keep the SmartKey: R with electronic devices, e.g. a mobile
phone or another SmartKey.
R with metallic objects, e.g. coins or metalfoil.
R inside metallic objects, e.g. a metal case.
Vehicles with KEYLESS-GO start function: do not keep the SmartKey in the cargo com-
partment. Otherwise, the SmartKey may not
be detected, e.g. when starting the engine
using the Start/Stop button.
SmartKey functions
:& To lock the vehicle
;%To unlock the vehicle
If you do not open the vehicle within approx-
imately 40 seconds of unlocking, the vehicle
will lock again.
If you do not open the vehicle within approx-
imately 40 seconds of unlocking:
R the vehicle is locked again.
R protection against theft is reactivated.
X To lock centrally: press button:.

The SmartKey centrally locks/unlocks:R the doors
R the tailgate
R the fuel filler flap
The turn signals flash once when unlocking
and three times when locking.
iWhen the locator lighting is activated in
Audio 20/COMAND, it also lights up when
it is dark after the vehicle is unlocked with
the remote control (see the separate oper- ating instructions).
iYou can also set an audible signal to con-
firm that the vehicle has been locked. The
audible signal can be activated and deacti- vated using the on-board computer( Y page 205).
KEYLESS-GO
General notes
Bear in mind that the engine can be started by
any of the vehicle occupants if there is a
SmartKey in the vehicle.
Locking/unlocking centrally
You can start, lock or unlock the vehicle using
KEYLESS-GO. To do this, you only need carry the SmartKey with you. You can combine the
functions of KEYLESS-GO with those of a con-
ventional SmartKey. Unlock the vehicle by
using KEYLESS-GO, for instance, and lock it
using the &button on the SmartKey.
The driver's door and the door at which the
handle is used, must both be closed. The
SmartKey must be outside the vehicle. When locking or unlocking with KEYLESS-GO, the
distance between the SmartKey and the cor-
responding door handle must not be greater
than 3 ft (1 m). A check which periodically establishes a radio
connection between the vehicle and the
SmartKey determines whether a valid Smart- Key is in the vehicle. This occurs, for example:
R when starting the engine
R whilst driving
R when the external door handles aretouched
R during convenience closing
X To unlock the vehicle: touch the inner
surface of the door handle.
X To lock the vehicle: touch sensor sur-
face :or; .
Make sure that you do not touch the inner
surface of the door handle.
X Convenience closing feature: touch
recessed sensor surface ;for an exten-
ded period.
Further information on the convenience
closing feature ( Ypage 83).
X
To unlock the tailgate: pull the tailgate
handle.

Problems with the SmartKey

X Vehicles without KEYLESS-GO or KEYLESS-GO start func- tion: try again to lock/unlock the vehicle using the remote con-
trol function of the SmartKey. Point the tip of the SmartKey at
the driver's door handle from close range and press the %or
& button.
If this does not work: X Check the SmartKey battery ( Ypage 73) and replace it if nec-
essary ( Ypage 74).
X Unlock ( Ypage 78) or lock ( Ypage 79) the vehicle using the
mechanical key.
There is interference from a powerful source of radio waves.
X Vehicles without KEYLESS-GO or KEYLESS-GO start func- tion: try again to lock/unlock the vehicle using the remote con-
trol function of the SmartKey. Point the tip of the SmartKey at
the driver's door handle from close range and press the %/
& button.
If this does not work: X Unlock ( Ypage 78) or lock ( Ypage 79) the vehicle using the
mechanical key.
The SmartKey is faulty.
X Unlock ( Ypage 78) or lock ( Ypage 79) the vehicle using the
mechanical key.
X Have the SmartKey checked at a qualified specialist workshop.
You can no longer lock
or unlock the vehicle
using KEYLESS-GO.The SmartKey battery is discharged or nearly discharged.
X Check the SmartKey battery ( Ypage 73) and replace it if nec-
essary ( Ypage 74).
If this does not work:
X Unlock ( Ypage 78) or lock ( Ypage 79) the vehicle using the
mechanical key.
There is interference from a powerful source of radio waves.
X Unlock ( Ypage 78) or lock ( Ypage 79) the vehicle using the
mechanical key.

X Lock/unlock the vehicle using the remote control function of
the SmartKey.
X Have the vehicle and SmartKey checked at a qualified specialist

If the vehicle can also not be locked/unlocked using the remote
control function: X Unlock ( Ypage 78) or lock ( Ypage 79) the vehicle using the
mechanical key.
X Have the vehicle and SmartKey checked at a qualified specialist
workshop.
The engine cannot be
started using the
SmartKey.The on-board voltage is too low.
X Switch off non-essential consumers, e.g. seat heating or interior
lighting, and try to start the engine again.
If this does not work:
X Check the starter battery and charge it if necessary (Y page 291).
or
X Jump-start the vehicle ( Ypage 293).
or
X Consult a qualified specialist workshop.
The engine cannot be
started using the Start/
Stop button. The
SmartKey is in the vehi-
cle.The vehicle is locked.
X Unlock the vehicle and try to start the vehicle again.
The SmartKey battery is discharged or nearly discharged.
X Check the SmartKey battery ( Ypage 73) and replace it if nec-
essary ( Ypage 74).
If this does not work:
X Start your vehicle with the SmartKey in the ignition lock.
There is interference from a powerful source of radio waves.
X Start your vehicle with the SmartKey in the ignition lock.

the case if you are not depressing the brake
pedal.
If you depress the brake pedal and press the
Start/Stop button, the engine starts immedi-
ately.
To start the vehicle without actively using the
SmartKey:
R the Start/Stop button must be inserted in
the ignition lock.
R the SmartKey must be in the vehicle.
R the vehicle must not be locked with the
SmartKey or KEYLESS-GO ( Ypage 71).
Do not keep the KEYLESS-GO key:
R with electronic devices, e.g. a mobile
phone or another SmartKey.
R with metallic objects, e.g. coins or metal
foil.
R inside metallic objects, e.g. a metal case.
This can affect the functionality of KEYLESS-
GO.
If you lock the vehicle with the SmartKey's
remote control or with KEYLESS-GO, after a
short time:
R you will not be able to switch on the ignition
with the Start/Stop button.
R you will not be able to start the engine with
the Start/Stop button until the vehicle is
unlocked again.
If you lock the vehicle centrally using the but-
ton on the front door ( Ypage 78), you can
continue to start the engine with the Start/
Stop button.
The engine can be switched off while the vehi-
cle is in motion by pressing and holding the
Start/Stop button for three seconds. This
function operates independently of the ECO
start/stop automatic engine switch-off func-
tion. Key positions with the Start/Stop button
:Start/Stop button
;Ignition lock
As soon as the ignition is switched on, all the
indicator lamps in the instrument cluster light up. Further information on situations where
an indicator lamp either fails to go out after
starting the engine or lights up while driving( Y page 237).
If Start/Stop button :has not yet been
pressed, this corresponds to the key being
removed from the ignition.
X To switch on the power supply: press
Start/Stop button :once.
The power supply is switched on. You can
now activate the windshield wipers, for
example.
The power supply is switched off again if:
R the driver's door is opened and
R you press Start/Stop button :twice when
in this position
X To switch on the ignition: press Start/
Stop button :twice.
The ignition is switched on.
The ignition is switched off when:
R the driver's door is opened and
R you press Start/Stop button :twice when
in this position
Removing the Start/Stop button
You can remove the Start/Stop button from
the ignition lock and start the vehicle as nor-
mal using the SmartKey.

Important safety notes
GWARNING
When you operate or program the garage doorwith the integrated garage door opener, per-
sons in the range of movement of the garage
door can become trapped or struck by the
garage door. There is a risk of injury.
When using the integrated garage door
opener, always make sure that nobody is
within the range of movement of the garage
door.
GWARNING
Combustion engines emit poisonous exhaust
gases such as carbon monoxide. Inhaling
these exhaust gases leads to poisoning. There is a risk of fatal injury. Therefore never leave
the engine running in enclosed spaces with-
out sufficient ventilation.
Programming
Programming buttons
Pay attention to the "Important safety notes"
( Y page 264).
Garage door remote control Ais not inclu-
ded with the integrated garage door opener.
X Turn the SmartKey to position 2in the igni-
tion lock ( Ypage 135).
X Select one of buttons ;to? to use to
control the garage door drive. X
To start programming mode: press and
hold one of buttons ;to? on the inte-
grated garage door opener.
The garage door opener is now in program-
ming mode. After a short time, indicatorlamp :lights up yellow.
Indicator lamp :lights up yellow as soon
as button ;,= or? is programmed for
the first time. If the selected button has
already been programmed, indicatorlamp :will only light up yellow after ten
seconds have elapsed.
X Release button ;,= or? . Indicator
lamp :flashes yellow.
X To program the remote control: point
garage door remote control Atowards
buttons ;to? on the rear-view mirror at
a distance of 2 to 8 inches (5 to 20 cm).
X Press and hold button Bon remote control
A until indicator lamp :lights up green.
When indicator lamp :lights up green:
programming is finished.
When indicator lamp :flashes green: pro-
gramming was successful. The next step is to synchronize the rolling code ( Y page 264).
X Release button Bon remote control Afor
the garage door drive system.
If indicator lamp :lights up red: repeat the
programing procedure for the correspond-
ing button on the rear-view mirror. When
doing so, vary the distance between remote control Aand the rear-view mirror.
The required distance between remote
control Aand the integrated garage door
opener depends on the garage door drive
system. Several attempts might be neces-
sary. You should test every position for at
least 25 seconds before trying another
position.
Synchronizing the rolling code
Pay attention to the "Important safety notes"
( Y page 264).
If the garage door system uses a rolling code,
you will also have to synchronize the garage
