Airbags and EmergencyTensioning Devices,aswell as control units and sensorsfortherestraint systems, may be installed inthefol‐lowing areas ofyourvehicle:
RDoors
RDoor pillars
RDoor sills
RSeats
RCockpit
RInstrument cluster
RCenter console
RLateralroof frame
Do not install accessory parts such asaudio systems inthese areas.
Do not carryoutrepairs orwelding.
Haveaftermarket installation of acces‐sories carried out at aqualified special‐istworkshop.
You could jeopardizethe operating safety ofyourvehicle ifyou use parts, tires and wheels aswellas accessoriesrelevanttosafety which havenotbeen approvedbyMercedes-Benz. Safety-rele‐vant systems, e.g.the brake system, may mal‐function. This Operator's Manual describes all models andallstandard and optional equipmentavailableforyourvehicle atthe time ofthis Operator's Man‐ual goingtopress. Country-specific differencesare possible. Notethatyourvehicle may not beequipped with allfeatures described. This is alsothe casefor systems and functionsrelevanttosafety.Therefore,the equipment onyourvehiclemay differ fromthat inthe descriptions and illus‐trations.
The original purchase agreementforyourvehiclecontains a list of all ofthe systems inyourvehi‐cle.

RIfthis isthe case,thevehicle occupantwould beforced intothe seat beltbytherear benchseat/rear seat orbythe seatbackrest. The seat belt cannotprotect asintended and couldresult in additionalinjury.
RObjects or loads inthe trunk/cargo com‐partment cannotberestrainedbytheseat backrest.
Make surethatthe seat backrest andtherear benchseat/rear seat areengaged beforeeverytrip.
Ifthe left andright seat backrests are notengaged and locked,this will be shown onthemultifunction display ofthe instrument cluster. Awarningtone will also sound.
Ifthe center seat backrest is not engaged andlocked,thered lockverification indicator will bevisible.The center and outer seat backrests can befol‐dedforwards separately.

You can lockthe center seat backrestreleasecatchifyouwanttosecurethe trunk againstunauthorized access. The center seat backrestcanthen befoldedforwards onlytogether withthe left seat backrest.
Foldthe center and left seat backrestsfor‐wards.
Tolock:slide catch1upwards.Therelease catchofthe center seat backrestwill be locked.
Tounlock:slide catch1downwards.

You can switchoffthe engine while drivingbypressing button1for aboutthree seconds orbypressing button1three times within a sec‐ond. Be suretoobservethe safety notes under"Driving tips".

Electric parking brake function (applyingautomatically)
\nWARNINGRisk of accident and injuryduetochildren and animals left unatten‐ded inthevehicle
Ifyou leavechildren and animals unattendedinthevehicle,theymay be abletosetthevehicle in motion,forexampleby:
RReleasingthe parking brake.
RShiftingthe automatic transmission outof park position].
RStartingthe engine.
In addition,theymay operatevehicle equip‐ment and become trapped.
Never leavechildren and animals unat‐tended inthevehicle.
When leavingthevehicle, alwaystakethe SmartKeywithyou and lockthevehicle.
The electric parking brake is applied ifthe trans‐mission is in position]and one ofthefollow‐ing conditions is fulfilled:
RThe engine is switched off.
RThe seat belttongue is not inserted intheseat belt buckle ofthe driver's seat andthedriver's door is opened.
Toprevent application: pullthe handle oftheelectric parking brake.
Inthefollowing situations,the electric parkingbrake is also applied:
RActive Distance AssistDISTRONIC is bringingthevehicletoastandstill.
RThe HOLD function iskeepingthevehiclesta‐tionary.
RActiveParking Assist iskeepingthevehiclestationary.
This isthe case if one ofthefollowing conditionsis also fulfilled:
RThe engine is switched off.
RThe seat belttongue is not inserted intheseat belt buckle ofthe driver's seat andthedriver's door is opened.
RThere is a system malfunction.
RThe power supply is insufficient.
RThevehicle isstationaryfor a lengthyperiod.
Whenthe electric parking brake is applied,theredI(USA) or$(Canada) indicator lampappears inthe instrument cluster.
The electric parking brake is not automaticallyapplied ifthe engine is switched offbythe ECOstart/stop function.
Electric parking brake function (releasingautomatically)
The electric parking brake isreleased whenthefollowing conditions are fulfilled:
RThe engine isrunning.
RThe seat belttongue is inserted intothe seatbelt buckle ofthe driver's seat.
RThe transmission is in position[or^andyou depressthe accelerator pedal oryou

RIfthe transmission is in position^,thetrunk lid mustbe closed.
Ifthe seat belttongue is not inserted intotheseat belt buckle ofthe driver's seat,thefollow‐ing conditions must be fulfilled:

RYou movethe transmission out of transmis‐sion position]oryou havepreviouslydrivenfasterthan 2mph (3 km/h).
RIfthe transmission is in position^,thetrunk lid mustbe closed.
Whenthe electric parking brake isreleased,theredI(USA) or$(Canada) indicator lampinthe instrument cluster goes out.
Applying/releasingthe electric parkingbrake manually

The electric parking brake is only securelyapplied ifthe indicator lamp is lit continu‐ously.

Switchonthe ignition.

Emergency brakingPress and hold handle1.Whenthevehicle has been brakedto astandstill,the electric parking brake isapplied. TheredI(USA) or$(Can‐ada) indicator lamp appears inthe instru‐ment cluster.
Notes on parkingthevehiclefor anextendedperiod
Ifyou leavethevehicle parkedfor longerthanfourweeks,the disconnected battery may bedamagedbydeep discharge.

If ABS intervenes when braking,you willfeel apulsing inthe brake pedal. The pulsating brakepedal can be an indication of hazardousroadconditions and can serveas aremindertotakeextra care while driving.
System limitationsRABS is active from speeds of approx. 5mph(8 km/h).
RABS may be impaired or may not function if amalfunction has occurred andtheyel‐low%ABSwarning lamp lights up contin‐uously inthe instrument cluster aftertheengine isstarted.
Function ofBAS (Brake Assist System)
\nWARNINGRisk of an accident causedbya malfunction inBAS (Brake AssistSys‐tem)
IfBAS is malfunctioning,the braking distancein an emergency braking situation isincreased.
Depressthe brake pedal with fullforcein emergency braking situations. ABSpreventsthe wheels from locking.
BAS supportsyour emergency braking situationwith additional brakeforce.
Ifyou depressthe brake pedalquickly,BAS isactivated:
RBAS automaticallybooststhe brake pres‐sure.
RBAS can shortenthe braking distance.
RABS preventsthe wheels from locking.
The brakes will function as usual onceyoureleasethe brake pedal.BAS is deactivated.
Function of ESP®(ElectronicStability Pro‐gram)
\nWARNINGRisk of skidding if ESP®ismalfunctioning
If ESP®is malfunctioning, ESP®cannot carryoutvehiclestabilization. In addition,otherdriving safety systems are switched off.
Drive on carefully.
HaveESP®checked at aqualified spe‐cialistworkshop.
\nWARNINGRisk of skidding if ESP®isdeactivated
Ifyou deactivate ESP®, ESP®cannot carryoutvehiclestabilization.
ESP®should onlybe deactivated inthefollowing situations.

IfActive Brake Assisthas detected arisk of colli‐sion, awarningtone sounds andtheLdis‐tancewarning lamp lights up inthe instrumentcluster.
Ifyou do notreacttothewarning, autonomousbraking can be initiated in critical situations.
In especially critical situations,Active BrakeAssistcan initiateautonomous braking directly.Inthis case,thewarning lamp andwarningtoneoccur simultaneously with the braking applica‐tion.
Ifyou applythe brakeyourself in a critical situa‐tion or applythe brake during autonomous brak‐ing, situation-dependent braking assistanceoccurs. The brake pressure increases uptomax‐imum full-stop braking if necessary.
If autonomous braking or situation-dependentbraking assistance has occurred, display1appears inthe multifunction display andthenautomatically goes out after a short time.
Ifthe autonomous braking function orthe situa‐tion-dependent braking assistance is triggered,additional preventive measuresfor occupant
protection (PRE-SAFE®) may also be initiated.
\nWARNINGRisk of an accident causedbylimited detection performance ofActiveBrake Assist
Active Brake Assistcannot alwaysclearlyidentify objects and complex traffic situa‐tions.
In suchcases,Active Brake Assistmight:

RNotgive awarning or not brake
Always pay careful attentiontothe traf‐fic situation; do notrely onActive BrakeAssistalone.Active Brake Assistis onlyan aid. The driver isresponsibleformaintaining a suitable distancetothevehicle in front,vehicle speed andforbraking in good time.
Be preparedtobrake or swerveif nec‐essary.
