Centring pin Threade dmetal pin. Tool for precise
positioning of the wheel on the wheel
hub when changing a tyre. Chassis number
Number determined by the manufac-
turerand affixed to the body, by which
each vehicle can be clearly identified.
Child seat rec ognition
Special child seats are available for ve-
hicles with automatic child seat recog-
nition on the front-passenger seat. If
you have fitted a child seat of this kind
to the front-passenger seat, the front-
passenger airbag is automatically disa-
bled (thePASSENGER AIRBAG OFF/7
warning lamp on the centre console
lights up).
Cockpit All the instruments, switches, buttons
and warning and indicator lamps within
the driver's reach, which are necessary
for monitoring and controlling the vehi-

Emergency spare wheel Narrow spare wheel which is lighter
and takes up less space than a full-
sized spare wheel.
EN 228 European standard for unleaded petrol.
Engine control system Controls the various engine functions,
e.g. the engine speed.
Engine number Number determined by the manufac-
turer and marked on the cylinder
crankcase, by which each engine can
be clearly identified.
Engine oil viscosity Measure of the internal oil friction (vis-
cosity) at different temperatures. The
higher the temperature the oil can tol-
erate without thinning too much, or the
lower the temperature it can tolerate
without thickening too much, the bet-
ter the viscosity characteristics of the

gram)
Improves driving stability and ->trac-
tion when cornering and in emergency
situat ions, e.g. when there is a risk of

Syste mfor determining geographical
location. A GPS unit located in the vehi-
cle receives satellite signals, compares
them to a digital map (e.g. on CD ROM)
and uses them to det ermine the posi-
tion of the vehicle and for navigation
pur poses.

ba l S ystem for M obile Communica-
tions)
International communication standard
for mob ile phones. Thanks to this uni-
form standard, you can also use your
mobile phone abroad. The transmis-
sion method is digital. Head/thorax airbag
This ty peofairbag isloca tedin the
backrests of the front seats and behind
the side panel inthe rear of the vehicle
and pr otects the occupants in the
event ofa side impact. It provides pro-
tection to the head area inaddition to
that provided by the sidebag.
Headlam p range control
Adjusts the headlamps according to ve-
hicle load, so that onco ming traffic is
not dazzled.
Heat erbooster system
Provides additional heat in the vehicle
interior on vehicles with a diesel en-
gine.
Instrum ent cluster
Displays and indicator lamps in the
driver's field of vision, e.g. the rev
counter, the speedometer and the fuel

Interior motion sen sor*
Anti-theft system which triggers an
alarm if the side windows are smashed
and someone reaches into the vehicle
when the vehicle is locked.
IRS* (->Interior motion sensor)
KEYLESS GO* System for operating the vehicle with-
out a key.
Ki ck down
On vehicles with ->automatic transmis-
sion*, the transmission is shifted down
to a lower gear when the accelerator
ped alis depressed beyond the pres-
sure point. This increases the rate of
vehicle acceleration. Knock
resistance
Resistance of petrol against uncon-
trolled self-ignition of th egas-air mix-
ture in the cylinder head (knocking).
The octane number is a measure of
knock res istance. The higher the oc-
tane number, the higher the knock re-
sistance.
Lamp Spreads and forms the beam of light
from a ->bulb, e.g. headlamps.
LED (L ig
ht -E mitting D iode);
Semiconductor element that converts
electr icity directly into light.

Speed index Part of the tyre designation; indicates

SRS (S upplemental R estraint S ystem)

Position of the dipped-beam head-

evenly between the inside and the out-

TIR EFIT kit
Accessories for temp orary repairs to
flat tyres. The TIREFIT kit consists of a
filler bottle with sealant, a filler hose,
and a valve core extractor with valve
and an electric air pump.
To rque
Force exerted around a central axis of
rotation, e.g. when a wheel bolt is tight-
ened. For engines, the torque isthe
force transferred to the ->transmission.
To rque conver ter
This has the same function on vehicles
with ->autom atic tra nsmission as the
clutch has on vehicles with manual
->transmission.
Tr ac tion
Force which is transferred from the ve-
hicle to the road via the tyres and
whi chdescribes the grip. Traction mode
Acti veacceleration of the vehicle by
adding more throttle.
Transmission Component of the ->drive train that
converts the high speed of the engine
tolower rotation speeds at the drive
wheels and thus optimises the transfer
of engine ->torque to the wheels.
Wheel Term used in everyday language to de-
note ->rim, wheel disc and tyre.
Xe non headlamps*
Headlamps whi chuse an electric arc
in stead of a heated fil ament to gener-
