68 Safety and SecurityOccupant safetyAutomatic comfort-fit feature seat belt
An automatic comfort-fit feature for front
seats reduces the retracting force of the
seat belts when they are in normal use.
Roll bars
The roll bars are integrated into the rear
head restraints.
The roll bars raise automatically in an acci-
dent or in a critical driving situation.
You can manually lower the roll bars again
when the soft top is open (
page 354).
!Do not place objects heavier than 20
lbs (9 kg) on the front passenger seat.
This could cause the front or head-tho-
rax airbag on the front passenger side
to deploy in a crash which exceeds the
system's deployment threshold.
Warning!
G
Make sure nothing is blocking the roll bars’
path of motion. Otherwise someone could
be injured when the roll bars are raised. The
head restraints should therefore always be
in the raised position when the rear seat is
occupied (
page 111).
iWhen the roll bars are raised automati-
cally, you will hear a ratcheting sound
and the rear head restraints will also
rise.
iYou cannot lower the head restraints in
the rear when the roll bars are in the
raised position.Warning!

If the yellow roll bar warning lamp in
the clock does not go out after starting the
engine, or if it comes on while driving, then
the roll bar system is not operating properly
and may not activate in an accident. In this
case, raise the roll bars manually before
continuing to drive (
page 353).
For safety reasons, drive only with the roll
bars raised until the malfunction is repaired.
Have your vehicle checked at an authorized
Mercedes-Benz Center.

88 Controls in detailLocking and unlocking
In the “Controls in detail” section you will
find detailed information on how to oper-
ate the equipment installed on your vehi-
cle. If you are already familiar with the
basic functions of your vehicle, this section
will be of particular interest to you.
To quickly familiarize yourself with the ba-
sic functions of the vehicle, refer to the
“Getting started” section of this manual.
The corresponding page numbers are giv-
en at the beginning of each segment.
Locking and unlocking
SmartKeys
Your vehicle comes supplied with two
SmartKeys, each with remote control and
a removable mechanical key. The locking
tabs for the mechanical key portion of the
two SmartKeys are a different color to help
distinguish each SmartKey unit.
The SmartKey provides an extended oper-
ating range. To prevent theft, however, it is
advisable to only unlock the vehicle when
you are in close proximity to it.
The SmartKey centrally locks and unlocks:

Important notes on using KEYLESS-GO*


You can also use the SmartKey with
KEYLESS-GO like a normal SmartKey
(page 88).


You can combine KEYLESS-GO func-
tions with normal SmartKey functions
(e.g. unlocking with KEYLESS-GO and
locking with the remote control).


Always carry the SmartKey with
KEYLESS-GO with you.


Never store the SmartKey with
KEYLESS-GO together with:

electronic items such as a cellular
phone or another SmartKey with
KEYLESS-GO


metallic objects such as coins or
metal foil

When leaving the vehicle, always remove the
SmartKey from the starter switch, take the
SmartKey with KEYLESS-GO with you and
lock the vehicle. Do not leave children unat-
tended in the vehicle, or with access to an
unlocked vehicle. Unsupervised use of vehi-
cle equipment may cause an accident
and/or serious personal injury.iYou can also open and close the soft
top (
page 222) and the power win-
dows (page 213) using the
SmartKey.
iIf the vehicle has been parked for a
longer period of time, you must pull the
door handle in order to activate the
KEYLESS-GO function.

Seven blower speeds are available.
Press leftM or rightQ s i d e o f a i r
volume control switch until the re-
quested blower speed is attained.
The display “AUTO” disappears and the
automatic mode is switched off. The
selected blower speed is shown in the
display.
Adjusting automatically

Press left or right U button until it
clicks in.
The a, Z, X and Y sym-
bols are no longer visible.
The air volume is adjusted automatical-
ly.
Maximum cooling MAXCOOL
If the left and right air distribution controls
as well as the airflow volume control are
set toU and there is a high need for
cooling, the display “MAXCOOL” appears.
This provides the fastest possible cooling
of the vehicle interior (when windows and
soft top are closed).
Defrosting
Activating
Press buttonP (
page 173).
The indicator lamp on the button
comes on.
Switch off air recirculation, if selected.

Press button, (
page 173).
The indicator lamp on the button goes
out.

Close center air vents.

Adjust side air vents upwards.
Deactivating

Press buttonP (
page 173).
The indicator lamp on the button goes
out. Defrosting is turned off.

Turn SmartKey in the starter switch to
position1 or2 or press the
KEYLESS-GO* start/stop button.Opening the windows

point.
The corresponding window will move
downwards until you release the
switch.
Closing the windows

Pull on switch1 to4 to the resis-
tance point.
The corresponding window will move
upwards until you release the switch.Fully opening the door windows
(Express-open)

Press switch1 or2 past the resis-
tance point and release.
The corresponding window opens com-
pletely.
Fully closing the door windows
(Express-close)

Pull switch1 or2 past the resis-
tance point and release.
The corresponding window closes com-
pletely.

If you pull and hold the switch up when clos-
ing the window, and upward movement of
the window is blocked by some obstruction
including but not limited to arms, hands, fin-
gers, etc., the automatic reversal will not op-
erate.

Stopping windows
Press or pull respective switch again.Opening and closing the windows with
the soft top switch
The soft top switch is located in the center
console.

In addition to the power window switches,
the windows can also be opened or closed
with the soft top switch1.
!If the upward movement of a door win-
dow is blocked during the closing pro-
cedure, the door window will stop and
open slightly.
Remove the obstruction, pull the
switch again past the resistance point
and release.
If the door window still does not close
when there is no obstruction, then pull
the switch and hold it. The door window
will then close without the obstruction
sensor function.
Warning!

Driver's door only:
If within five seconds you again pull the
switch past the resistance point and re-
lease, the automatic reversal will not func-
tion.
