Treadwear indicators(TWI) are required by
law. Six indicatorsare positioned on the tire
tread. Theyare visible once the treaddepth
is approximatelyin (1.6 mm). If this is the
case,the tire is so worn that it mustbe
replaced.
Selecting, mounting and replacing
tires
ROnly mount tires and wheels of the same
type and make.
Exception: it is permissible to install a
different type or make in the event ofaflat
tire. Observe the "MOExtended tires (tires
with run-flat characteristics" section
(Ypage321).
ROnly mount tires of the correct size onto
the wheels.
RBreak in new tires at moderate speeds for
the first 60 miles(100 km).They only reach
their full performance after this distance.
RDo not drive with tires which have too little
tread depth, as this significantly reduces
the traction on wet roads (hydroplaning).
RReplace the tires after six years at the
latest, regardless of wear.
Observe the notes on the emergency spare
wheel (Ypage 367).
MOExtended tires (tires with run-flat
properties)
With MOExtended tires (tires with run flat
characteristics), you can continue to drive
your vehicle even if there isatotal loss of
pressure in one or more tires.
MOExtended tires may only be used in
conjunction with an active tire pressure loss
warning system or with an active tire pressure
monitor and on wheels specifically tested by
Mercedes-Benz.

aflat tire (Ypage 321).
iVehicles equipped with MOExtended tires
are not equipped withaTIREFIT kit at the
factory. It is therefore recommended that
you additionallyequip your vehicle with a
TIREFIT kit if you mount tires that do not
feature run-flat properties, e.g. winter tires.
ATIREFIT kit can be obtained from a
qualified specialist workshop.
Winter operation
General notes
Have your vehicle winterproofed ataqualified
specialist workshop at the onset of winter.
Observe the notes in the "Changingawheel"
section (Ypage 357).
Driving with summer tires
At temperatures below 45‡(+7 †), summer
tires lose elasticity significantly,and
therefore traction and braking power as well.
Change the tires on yourvehicle to
M+S tires. Using summer tires at very cold
temperatures could cause crackstoform,
thereby damaging the tires permanently.
Mercedes-Benz cannot accept responsibility
for this type of damage.
M+S tires
GWARNING
M+S tires withatiretread depthofless than
in (4 mm)are notsuitable for use in winter
and do notprovide sufficient traction.There
isariskofanaccident.
M+S tires withatread depthofless than
in (4 mm)must be replacedimmediately.
At temperatures below 45‡(+7 †), use
winter tires or all-weather tires. Both typesof
tireare identified by theM+S marking.

Only winter tires bearing thesnowflake
symbol in addition to the M+S marking
provide the best possiblegrip in wintry road
conditions.
Only these tires will allowdriving safety
systems such as ABS and ESP®to function
optimally in winter. These tires have been
developedspecificallyfor driving in snow.
Use M+S tires of the same make and tread on
all wheels to maintain safe handling
characteristics.
Alwaysobserve the maximum permissible
speed specified for the M+S tires you have
mounted.
Once the winter tires are mounted:
XCheck the tire pressures (Ypage 341).
XVehiclesfor Canada:restart the tire
pressure loss warning system
(Ypage 342).
XRestart the tire pressure monitor
(Ypage 342).

Snow chains
GWARNING
If snow chains are installed to the front
wheels, they may drag against the vehicle
body or chassis components. This could
cause damage to the vehicle or the tires.
There isarisk of an accident.
To avoid hazardous situations:
Rnever install snow chains to the front
wheels
Ralways install snow chains in pairs to the
rear wheels.
!On vehicles with AIRMATIC, you must
drive at raised vehicle level if snow chains
have been mounted. The vehicle may
otherwise be damaged.
!On some tire sizes there is not enough
space for snow chains. To avoid damage to
the vehicle or tires, observe the "Wheel and
tire combinations" section under "Tires and
wheels".
For safety reasons, Mercedes-Benz
recommends that you only use snow chains
that have been speciallyapproved for your
vehicle by Mercedes-Benz,orare of a
corresponding standard of quality.
If you intend to mount snow chains, please
bear the following points in mind:
RSnow chains may not be mounted on all
wheel/tire combinations. Permissible
wheel-tire combinations (Ypage 362).
ROnly use snow chains when driving on
roads completely covered by snow.
Remove the snow chains as soon as
possiblewhen you come toaroad that is
not snow-covered.
RLocal regulations may restrict the use of
snow chains. Observe the appropriate
regulations if you wish to mount snow
chains.
RDo not exceed the maximum permissible
speed of 30 mph (50 km/h).
iYou may wish to deactivate ESP®when
pulling away with snow chains installed
(Ypage 69). This way you can allow the
wheels to spin inacontrolled manner,
achieving an increased driving force
(cutting action).

Example: tire pressure table with tire dimensions
Ifatire size precedesatire pressure, the tire
pressure informationfollowing is only valid
for that tire size. The load conditions "partially
laden" and "fully laden" are defined in the
table for different numbers of occupantsand
amounts of luggage. The actual number of
seats may differ.
Some tire pressure tables show only the rim
diameters instead of the full tire size, e.g.
R18.The rim diameter is part of the tire size
and can be found on the tire sidewall
(Ypage 351).
If the tire pressures have been set to the
lower values for lighter loads and/or lower
road speeds, the pressures should be reset
to the higher values:
Rif you want to drive with an increased load
and/or
Rif you want to drive at higher road speeds.
iThe tire pressures for increased loads
and/or higher road speeds, shown in the
tire pressure table, may haveanegative
effect on driving comfort.
If the tire pressure is not set correctly, this
can lead to an excessive build up of heat and
asudden loss of pressure.

Important notes on tire pressure
GWARNING
If the tire pressure drops repeatedly, the
wheel, valve or tire may be damaged. Tire
pressure that is too low may result inatire
blow-out. There isarisk of an accident.
RCheck the tire for foreign objects.
RCheck whether the wheel is losing air or the
valve is leaking.
If you are unable to rectify the damage,
contactaqualified specialist workshop.
GWARNING
If you fit unsuitable accessories onto tire
valves, the tire valves may be overloaded and
malfunction, which can cause tire pressure
loss. Due to their design, retrofitted tire
pressure monitors keep the tire valve open.
This can also result in tire pressure loss. There
isarisk of an accident.
Only screw the standard valve cap or other
valve caps approved by Mercedes-Benz for
your vehicle onto the tire valve.
Useasuitable pressure gauge to check the
tire pressure. The outer appearance ofatire
does not permit any reliable conclusion about
the tire pressure. On vehicles equipped with
the electronic tire pressure monitoring
system, the tire pressure can be checked
using the on-board computer.
The tire temperature and pressure increase
when the vehicle is in motion.This is
dependent on the driving speed and the load.
Therefore, you should only correct tire
pressures when the tires are cold.

Important safety notes
GWARNING
Each tire,including the spare (ifprovided),
should be checked at least once every two
weeks when cold and inflated to the pressure
recommended by the vehiclemanufacturer
on the Tire and Loading Information placard
on the driver'sdoor B-pillar or the tire
pressure label on the inside of the fuel filler
flap.Ifyour vehicle has tires ofadifferent size
than the size indicated on the Tire and Loading
Information placard or, if available, the tire
pressure label, you should determinethe
proper tire pressure for those tires.
As an added safety feature, your vehicle has
been equipped withatire pressure monitoring
system (TPMS) that illuminatesalow tire
pressure telltale when one or more of your
tires are significantly underinflated.
Accordingly, when the low tire pressure
telltale lights up, you should stop and check
your tires as soon as possible, and inflate
them to the proper pressure. Drivingona
significantly underinflated tire causes the tire
to overheat and can lead to tire failure.
Underinflation also reduces fuel efficiency
and tire tread life, and may affect the vehicle's
handling and stopping ability. Please note that
the TPMS is notasubstitute for proper tire
maintenance, and it is the driver's
responsibility to maintain correcttire
pressure, even if underinflation has not
reached the level to trigger illumination of the
TPMS low tire pressure telltale.
Your vehicle has also been equipped with a
TPMS malfunction indicator to indicate when
the system is not operating properly. The
TPMS malfunction indicator is combined with
the low tire pressure telltale. When the
system detectsamalfunction, the warning
lamp will flash for approximatelyaminute and
then remain continuously illuminated. This
sequence will be repeated every time the
vehicle is started as long as the malfunction
exists. When the malfunction indicator is
illuminated, the system may not be able to
detect or signal low tire pressure as intended.
TPMS malfunctions may occur foravariety of
reasons, including the installation of
incompatible replacement or alternate tires
or wheels on the vehicle that prevent the
TPMS from functioning properly. Always
check the TPMS malfunction telltale after
replacing one or more tires or wheels on your
vehicle to ensure that the replacement or
alternate Tires and wheels allow the TPMS to
continue to function properly.
It is the driver's responsibility to set the tire
pressure to that recommended for cold tires
which is suitable for the operating situation
(Ypage 338). Note that the correcttire
pressure for the current operating situation
must first be taught-in to the tire pressure
monitor. If there isasubstantial loss of
pressure, the warning threshold for the
warning message is aligned to the reference
values taught-in.Restart the tire pressure
monitor after adjustingthe pressure of the
cold tires (Ypage 345). The current
pressures are saved as new reference values.
Asaresult,awarning message will appear if
the tire pressure drops significantly.
The tire pressure monitor does not warn you
of an incorrectly set tire pressure. Observe
the notes on the recommended tire pressure
(Ypage 338).
The tire pressure monitor is not able to warn
you ofasudden loss of pressure, e.g. if the
tire is penetrated byaforeign object. In the
event ofasudden loss of pressure, bring the
vehicle toahalt by brakingcarefully. Avoid
sudden steering movements

B-pillar on the driver'sside. The vehicle
identification plate informsyou of the
gross vehicle weight rating. It is made up
of the vehicle weight, all vehicle
occupants, the fuel and the cargo. You
can also find information about the
maximum gross axle weight rating on the
front and rear axle.
The maximum gross axle weight rating is
the maximum weight that can be carried
by one axle (front or rear axle). Never
exceed the maximum load or the
maximum gross axle weight rating for the
front or rear axle.

U.S. tire regulations prescribe that every tire
manufacturer or retreader must imprintaTIN
in or on the sidewall of every tire produced.
The TIN isauniqueidentification number. The
TIN enables the tire manufacturers or
retreaders to inform purchasers of recallsand
other safety-relevant matters. It makes it
possible for the purchaser to easily identify
the affected tires.
The TIN is made up of manufacturer
identification code,tire size$,tire type
code!and manufacturing date.
DOT (Department of Transportation):tire
symbolindicates that the tire complies
with the requirements of the U.S. Department
of Transportation.
Manufacturer identification code:
manufacturer identification codeprovides
detailsonthe tire manufacturer. New tires
haveacode with two symbols. Retreaded
tires haveacode with four symbols.

Tiresize:identifier$describes the tire size.

Date of manufacture:date of manufacture
provides information about the age of a
tire. The first and second positions represent
the week of manufacture, starting with "01"
for the first calendar week. Positions three
and four represent the year of manufacture.
For example,atire that is marked with
"3208", was manufactured in week 32 in
2008.

This information describes the type of tire
cord and the number of layers in

Describes the number of plies or the number
of layers of rubber-coated fabric in the tire
tread and sidewall. These are made of steel,
nylon, polyester and other materials.

Curbweight
The weight ofavehicle with standard
equipment includingthemaximum capacity
of fuel, oil and coolant.Italso includes the air-
conditioningsystem and optional equipment
if these are installed in the vehicle, but does
not include passengers or luggage.
Maximumload rating
The maximum tireload is the maximum
permissible weight in kilograms or lbs for
whichatireisapproved.
Maximumpermissible tirepressure
Maximum permissible tirepressure for one
tire.
Maximumload on one tire
Maximum load on one tire. This is calculated
by dividingthe maximum axle load of one axle
by two.
PSI (pounds per squareinch)
Astandardunitofmeasure for tire pressure.
Aspect ratio
Relationship between tire height and tire
width in percent.
Tirepressure
This is pressure inside the tire applying an
outward forcetoeach square inch of the tire's
surface. The tire pressure is specified in
pounds per square inch (psi), in kilopascal
(kPa) or in bar. The tire pressure should only
be corrected when the tires are cold.
Cold tirepressure
The tires are cold:
Rif the vehicle has been parked without
direct sunlight on the tires for at least three
hours and
Rif the vehicle has been driven for less than
1mile (1.6 km).
Tread
The part of the tire that comes intocontact
with the road.
Bead
The tire bead ensures that the tire sits
securely on the wheel. There are several steel
wires in the bead to preventthe tire from
comingloose from the wheel rim.
Sidewall
The part of the tire between the tread and the
bead.
Weight of optional extras
The combined weight of those optional extras
that weigh more than the replaced standard
parts and more than 2.3 kilograms (5 lbs).
These optional extras, such as high-
performance brakes, level control,aroof rack
orahigh-performancebattery, are not
included in the curb weight and the weight of
the accessories.
TIN (Tire Identification Number)
This isaunique identifier which can be used
byatire manufacturer to identify tires, for
example foraproduct recall, and thus identify
the purchasers. The TIN is made up of the
manufacturer's identity code, tire size, tire
type code and the manufacturing date.
Load bearing index
The load bearing index (also load index) is a
code that contains the maximum load bearing
capacity ofatire.
Traction
Traction is the result of friction between the
tires and the road surface.
Treadwear indicators
Narrow bars (tread wear bars) that are
distributed over the tire tread. If the tire tread
is level with the bars, the wear limit ofin
(1.6 mm) has been reached.
