If the vehicle has been locked using the lock-
ing button for the central locking, or has been locked automatically, and a door is opened
from the inside:
R the vehicle will be fully unlocked if it had
previously been fully unlocked
R only the door which has been opened form
the inside is unlocked if only the driver's
door had been previously unlocked Automatic locking feature

To deactivate: press and hold button :
for approximately five seconds until a tone sounds.
X To activate: press and hold button ;for
approximately five seconds until a tone
sounds.
i If you press one of the two buttons and do
not hear a tone, the relevant setting has
already been selected.
The vehicle is locked automatically when the
ignition is switched on and the wheels are
turning.
You could therefore be locked out if:
R the vehicle is being pushed.
R the vehicle is being towed.
R the vehicle is being tested on a dynamom-
eter.
You can also switch the automatic locking
function on and off using the on-board com-
puter (Y page 255). Unlocking the driver's door (emer-
gency key element)
If the vehicle can no longer be unlocked with
the key, use the emergency key element.
X Take the emergency key element out of the
key (Y page 85).
X Insert the emergency key element into the
lock of the driver's door as far as it will go. X
Turn the emergency key element anti-
clockwise to position 1.
The door is unlocked.
i On right-hand-drive vehicles, turn the
emergency key element clockwise.
X Turn the emergency key element back and
remove it.
X Insert the emergency key element into the
key.
If you use the emergency key element to
unlock and open the driver's door, the anti-
theft alarm system will be triggered
(Y page 78). Locking the vehicle (emergency key

If the vehicle can no longer be locked with the
key, use the emergency key element.
X Open the driver's door.
X Close the front-passenger door, the rear
doors and the boot lid/tailgate.
X Press the locking button (Y page 89).
X Check whether the locking knobs on the
front-passenger door and the rear doors 90

If KEYLESS-GO detects a second key out-
side the vehicle, the boot lid/tailgate
remains closed. Opening/closing automatically from
the inside
Important safety notes G
WARNING
Parts of the body could become trapped dur-
ing automatic closing of the boot lid or tail-
gate. Moreover, people, e.g. children, may be standing in the closing area or may enter the
closing area during the closing process. There
is a risk of injury.
Make sure that nobody is in the vicinity of the closing area during the closing process.
Use one of the following options to stop the
closing process:
R Press the Fbutton on the key.
R Press the remote operating switch on the
driver's door.
R Press the closing or locking button on the
boot lid/tailgate.
R Pull the handle on the boot lid/tailgate.
! The boot lid/tailgate swings upwards and
to the rear when opened. Therefore, make
sure that there is sufficient clearance
above and behind the boot lid/tailgate.
i Boot lid/tailgate opening dimensions
(Y page 407). Opening and closing X
To open: pull remote operating switch for
boot lid/tailgate :until the boot lid/tail-
gate opens.
X To close (CLS Coupé): press remote oper-
ating switch for boot lid :until the boot lid
is completely closed.
X To close (CLS Shooting Brake): turn the
key to position 1or 2in the ignition lock.
X Press remote operating switch for tail-
gate :until the tailgate is completely
closed.
You will hear a warning tone during the
closing process.
You can open and close the boot lid/tailgate
from the driver's seat when the vehicle is sta-
tionary and unlocked. Limiting the opening angle of the tail-
gate (CLS Shooting Brake)
Important safety notes !
Make sure there is sufficient clearance to
open the tailgate fully when setting the
opening angle. The tailgate could otherwise
be damaged. Ideally, set the opening angle outside.
Activating You can limit the opening angle of the tail-
gate. This is possible in the top half of its
opening range, up to approximately 20 cm
before the stop. 94

X Turn the key to position 1or 2in the ignition
lock.
X To open manually: press and hold the cor-
responding switch.
X To open fully: press the corresponding
switch beyond the point of resistance and
release it.
Automatic operation is started.
X To close manually: pull the corresponding
switch and hold it.
X To close fully: pull the corresponding
switch beyond the pressure point.
Automatic operation is started.
X To interrupt automatic operation:
press/pull the corresponding switch again.
i If you press/pull the switch beyond the
point of resistance, automatic operation is
started in the corresponding direction. You
can stop automatic operation by pressing/ pulling again.
i You can continue to operate the side win-
dows after switching off the engine or
removing the key. This function remains
active for five minutes or until the driver's
or front-passenger door is opened.
i The side windows cannot be operated
from the rear when the override feature for
the side windows is activated (Y page 69). Convenience opening feature
General notes You can ventilate the vehicle before you start
driving. To do this, the key is used to carry out the following functions simultaneously:
R unlock the vehicle
R open the side windows
R open the sliding sunroof
R switch on the seat ventilation for the driv-
er's seat
i The convenience opening feature can
only be operated using the key. The key
must be in close proximity to the vehicle.
Convenience opening feature X
Press and hold the %button until the
side windows and the sliding sunroof are in the desired position.
X To interrupt convenience opening:
release the %button. Convenience closing feature
Important safety notes G
WARNING
When the convenience closing feature is oper- ating, parts of the body could become trapped
in the closing area of the side window and the
sliding sunroof. There is a risk of injury.
Observe the complete closing procedure
when the convenience closing feature is oper-
ating. When closing make sure that no parts of the body are in the closing area.
Proceed as follows if someone is trapped:
With the key:
X Release the &button.
X Press and hold the %button until the
side windows and the sliding sunroof or the
panorama sliding sunroof open again. Side windows

With KEYLESS-GO:
X Release the sensor surface on the door
handle.
X Pull the door handle immediately and hold
it.
The side windows and the sliding sunroof or
the panorama sliding sunroof open.
General notes When you lock the vehicle, you can simulta-
neously:
R close the side windows
R close the sliding sunroof
Using the key X
Vehicles without KEYLESS-GO: point the
tip of the key at the door handle on the
driver's door.
X Vehicles with KEYLESS-GO: the key must
be in close proximity to the vehicle.
X Press and hold the &button until the
side windows and the sliding sunroof are
fully closed.
X Make sure that all the side windows and the
sliding sunroof are closed.
X To interrupt convenience closing:
release the &button.
Using KEYLESS-GO The KEYLESS-GO key must be outside the
vehicle. All the doors must be closed. X
Touch recessed sensor surface :on the
door handle until the side windows and the sliding sunroof are fully closed.
i Make sure you only touch recessed sen-
sor surface :.
X Make sure that all the side windows and the
sliding sunroof are closed.
X To interrupt convenience closing:
release recessed sensor surface :on the
door handle. Resetting the side windows
If a side window can no longer be closed fully, you must reset it.
X Close all doors.
X Turn the key to position 1or 2in the ignition
lock.
X Pull the corresponding switch on the door
control panel until the side window is com-
pletely closed. (Y page 96)
X Hold the switch for an additional second.
If the side window opens again slightly:
X Immediately pull the corresponding switch
on the door control panel until the side win-
dow is completely closed (Y page 96).
X Hold the switch for an additional second.
X If the corresponding side window remains
closed after the button has been released,
the side window has been reset correctly. If
this is not the case, repeat the steps aboveagain. 98

Do not allow anything to protrude from the
sliding sunroof. Otherwise, the seals could
be damaged.
i Resonance noises can occur in addition to
the usual airflow noises when the sliding
sunroof is open. They are caused by minor
pressure fluctuations in the vehicle interior.
To reduce or eliminate these noises:
R change the position of the sliding sunroof
R open a side window
R open the sliding sunroof to the comfort
setting Sliding sunroof reversing feature
The sliding sunroof is equipped with an auto-
matic reversing feature. If an object blocks or restricts the sliding sunroof during the closing
process, the sliding sunroof opens again
automatically. The automatic reversing fea-
ture is however only an aid and is no substi-
tute for your attention when closing the slid-
ing roof. G
WARNING
The reversing function does not react:
R to soft, light and thin objects, e.g. small fin-
gers
R over the last 4 mm of the closing movement
R during resetting
R when closing the sliding sunroof again man-
ually immediately after automatic reversing
This means that the reversing function cannot prevent someone being trapped in these sit-
uations. There is a risk of injury.
When closing make sure that no parts of the
body are in the closing area.
If someone is trapped:
R release the switch immediately or
R during automatic operation, press the
switch briefly in any direction
The closing process is stopped. Operating the sliding sunroof

X Turn the key to position 1or 2in the ignition
lock.
X Press or pull the 3switch in the corre-
sponding direction.
i If you press the
3switch beyond the
point of resistance, an automatic opening/ closing process is started in the corre-
sponding direction. When opening, the slid-
ing sunroof first automatically moves to
comfort setting. If you press it again, the
sliding sunroof opens completely. You can
stop automatic operation by pressing/pull- ing again.
The sun protection cover automatically opens
along with the sliding sunroof. You can open
or close the sun protection cover manually
when the sliding sunroof is raised or closed.
i You can continue to operate the sliding
sunroof after switching off the engine or
removing the key. This function remains
active for five minutes or until you open a
front door. 100

Rain-closing feature
When the key is in position
0in the ignition
lock or is removed, the sliding sunroof closes
automatically:
R if it starts to rain.
R at extreme outside temperatures.
R after six hours.
R if there is a malfunction in the power sup-
ply.
The rear of the sliding sunroof is then raised in order to ventilate the vehicle interior.
i If the sliding sunroof is obstructed when
being closed by the rain-closing feature, it
opens again slightly. The rain-closing fea-
ture is then deactivated.
The sliding sunroof does not close if: R it is raised at the rear.
R it is blocked.
R no rain is falling on the area of the wind-
screen being monitored by the rain sensor. If the vehicle, for example, is under a bridge or in a carport, the field of the sensor may
be covered.
Resetting !
If the sliding sunroof still cannot be
opened or closed fully after resetting, con-
tact a qualified specialist workshop.
Reset the sliding sunroof if it does not operate smoothly.
X Turn the key to position 1or 2in the ignition
lock.
X Raise the sliding sunroof fully at the rear
(Y page 100).
X Keep the 3switch pressed for another
second.
X Make sure that the sliding sunroof can be
fully opened and closed again
(Y page 100).
X If this is not the case, repeat the steps

Adjusting the head restraints electri-
cally X
To adjust the head restraint height: slide
the switch for head restraint adjustment :
up or down in the direction of the arrow.
Adjusting the luxury head restraints X
To adjust the side bolsters of the head
restraint: push or pull right or left-hand
side bolster :into the desired position.
X To adjust the angle of the head
restraint: push or pull the head restraint in
the direction of arrow ;.
i Adjust the head restraint so that the back
of your head is as close to the head

You can adjust the contour of the front seats
individually so as to provide optimum support
for your back and sides.
X Turn the key to position 2in the ignition
lock (Y page 159). Adjusting the active multicontour
seat
Overview :
To adjust the seat cushion length
; To switch the dynamic function on or off
= To adjust the side bolsters of the seat
backrest
? To switch the massage function on or off
A To adjust the contour of the backrest to
increase/decrease support
B To adjust the height/depth of the back-
rest contour
The active multicontour seat automatically
adapts the sides of the backrest to your cur-
rent driving style.
Dynamic function The dynamic function adjusts the air cushions
in the side bolsters of the seat backrests to
ensure ideal lateral support at all times. You
can choose between two levels. X
To switch on: press button;once or
twice until the desired level is set.
One or two indicator lamps in button ;
light up.
X To switch off: press button;repeatedly
until all indicator lamps in button ;go out.
You can select the following levels: Level 1 (one indica-
tor lamp) Standard setting:
slightly increased
lateral support and
slow build-up of air
pressure in the side
bolsters of the seat
backrest.
Level 2 (two indica-
tor lamps) Sport setting:
increased lateral
support and fast
build-up of pressure
in the side bolsters
of the seat backrest.
Massage function (PULSE)
The massage function helps you to prevent
muscle tension on long journeys. You can
choose between two levels.
X To switch on: press button?once or
twice until the desired level is set.
One or two indicator lamps in button ?
light up. The air cushions in the lumbar
region vibrate for approximately

Adjusting the lumbar support
You can adjust the contour of the driver's seat
so as to provide optimum support for your
back.
X Move adjustment lever :in the direction

You can adjust the contour of the front seat
backrests individually to provide optimum
support for your back. Switching the seat heating on/off
Switching on/off G
WARNING
If you repeatedly switch on seat heating, the
seat cushion and backrest padding may
become very hot. The health of vehicle occu-
pants with limited temperature sensitivity or a limited ability to react to excessively high
temperatures may be affected or they may
even suffer burn-like injuries. There is a risk of
injury.
Therefore, do not switch on the seat heating
repeatedly. Driver's and front-passenger seat
The three red indicator lamps in the button
indicate the heating level you have selected.
The system automatically switches from level 3 to level 2after approximately eight
minutes.
The system automatically switches from level
2 to level 1after approximately ten minutes.
The system automatically switches off
approximately 20 minutes after it is set to
level 1.
X Turn the key to position 1or 2in the ignition
lock (Y page 159).
X To switch on: press button:repeatedly
until the desired heating level is set.
X To switch off: press button:repeatedly
until all the indicator lamps go out.
i If the battery voltage is too low, the seat

Problems with the seat heating
Problem
Possible causes/consequences and

turely or cannot be
switched on. The on-board voltage is too low because too many electrical con-
sumers are switched on.
X Switch off electrical consumers that you do not need, such as
the rear window heating or interior lighting.
Once the battery is sufficiently charged, the seat heating will
switch back on automatically. Switching the seat ventilation on/off
Switching on/off Driver's and front-passenger seat
The three blue indicator lamps in the buttons
indicate the ventilation level you have selec-
ted.
X Turn the key to position 1or 2in the ignition
lock (Y page 159).
X To switch on: press button:repeatedly
until the desired ventilation level is set.
X To switch off: press button:repeatedly
until all the indicator lamps go out.
i If the battery voltage is too low, the seat
ventilation may switch off.
i You can open the side windows and the
sliding sunroof using the "Convenience
opening" feature (Y page 97). The seat ven-
tilation of the driver's seat automatically
switches to the highest level. 112
