Activating the softwareupdate
Restartthe system.
Function of important system updatesImportant system updates may be necessaryforthe security ofyour multimedia system's data.Please installthese updates, or elsethe securityofyour multimedia system cannotbe ensured.
If automatic software updates are activated,the system updates will be downloaded auto‐matically (→page 266).
As soon as an update isavailablefor download,a corresponding message appearsonthe mediadisplay.
You havethefollowing selection options:
RDownload
The update will be downloaded inthe back‐ground.
RDetails
Information aboutthe pending systemupdate is displayed.
RLater
The update can be downloaded manually at alater time (→page 266).
Ifthe download is completed andthe update isreadyfor installation,you will be informed ofthisafterthe next ignition cycle,forexample.
Parkthevehicle safely in a suitable locationbeforestartingthe installation.
Requirementsforthe installation:
RThe ignition is switched on.
RThe engine is notrunning.
RNotes andwarnings havebeenread andaccepted.
RThe parking brake is applied.
If allrequirements are met,the update will beinstalled. The multimedia system cannotbeoperated whilethe update is being installed andvehicle functions arerestricted.
If errorsshould occur duringthe installation,themultimedia system automatically attemptstorestorethe previousversion. Ifrestoration ofthepreviousversion is not possible, a symbolappears onthe center console display.Pleaseconsult aqualified specialistworkshoptoresolvethe problem.

\nWARNINGRisk of entrapment ifthewindshield wipers are switched on whilethe windshield is being cleaned
Ifthe windshield wipers are set in motionwhileyou are cleaningthe windshield orwiper blades,you can be trappedbythewiper arm.
Always switch offthe windshield wipersandthe ignition before cleaningthewindshield or wiper blades.
\nWARNINGRisk of burning fromthetail‐pipe ortailpipe trim
Thetailpipe andtailpipe trim can becomeveryhot. Ifyou come into contact withthesecar parts,you could burnyourself.
Always be particularlycareful when inthe vicinity ofthetailpipe andtailpipetrims and supervisechildrenveryclosely when inthis area.
Before any contact, allowthe car partstocool down.

Notes on cleaning and careAvoidingvehicle damage
Wheels/rimsUsewater and acid-free wheel cleaners.RDo not use acidic wheel cleanerstoremovebrake dust.This could damage wheel bolts and brake components.
RToavoid corrosion ofthe brake discs and brakepads, drivethevehiclefor afew minutes after cleaning before parkingit. The brake discs and brakepadswarmup and dry out.
WindowsCleanthe windowsonthe inside and outside using a dampclothand cleaning agentsrecommendedbyMercedes-Benz.Do not use dry cloths or abrasive or solvent-based cleaningagentstocleanthe inside of windows.
Wiper bladesFold outthe wiper blades and cleanthem using a damp cloth.Do not cleanthe wiper bladestoo often.

Towingthevehicle with bothaxles ontheground
Observethe notes onthe permittedtowingmethods (→page375).
Makesurethatthe battery is connected andcharged.
Observethefollowing points whenthe battery isdischarged:

RVehicles with automatic transmission:The automatic transmission cannot be shif‐tedtoposition \\or ].
Vehicles with automatic transmission:Ifthe automatic transmission cannotbe shif‐tedtoposition \\, orthe multifunction dis‐play inthe instrument cluster does not showanything, havethevehicle transportedaway(→page378).Atowingvehicle with liftingequipment isrequiredforvehicle transporta‐tion.
NOTEDamagedueto towingawayatexcessively high speeds orover long dis‐tances
The drivetrain could be damaged whentow‐ing atexcessively high speeds orover longdistances.
Atowing speed of 30mph (50 km/h)must not beexceeded.
Atowing distance of 30 miles (50 km)mustnot beexceeded.
\nWARNINGRisk of accident whentowingavehicle which istoo heavy
Ifthevehicle beingtow-started ortowedawayis heavierthanthe permissible grossmass ofyourvehicle,thefollowing situationscan occur:
RThetowingeye may become detached.
RThevehicle/trailer combination mayswerveorevenoverturn.
If anothervehicle istow-started ortowedaway, itsweight must notexceed
the permissible gross mass ofyourownvehicle.
If avehicle must betowstarted ortowedaway,its permissible gross mass must notexceedthepermissible gross mass ofthetowingvehicle. Information onthe permissible gross mass ofthevehicle can befound onthevehicle iden‐tification plate (→page417).
Vehicles with automatic transmission:Donot openthe driver's door or front passengerdoor,otherwisethe automatic transmissionautomatically shiftstoposition ]. Installingthetowingeye (→page 380).

Safety-related functions are limited or no lon‐geravailable inthefollowing situations:
Rthe ignition is switched off.
Rthe brake system or powersteering sys‐tem is malfunctioning.
Rthe energy supply orthe on-board electri‐cal system is malfunctioning.
Whenyourvehicle isthentowedaway, signif‐icantly more effortmay berequiredtosteerand brakethan is normallyrequired.
Use atow bar.
Make surethatthesteering wheel canmovefreely, beforetowingthevehicleaway.
NOTEDamageduetoexcessive tractivepower
Ifyou pullawaysharply,the tractive powermay betoo high andthevehicles could bedamaged.
Pullawayslowly and smoothly.
Loading thevehiclefor transport
Observethe notes ontowingaway(→page377).

Preparingthevehiclefor a wheelchange
Requirements:RTherequired tire-changetool isavailable. Ifyourvehicle is not equipped withthe tire-changetool kit, consult aqualified specialistworkshoptofind out about suitabletools.
RThevehicle is not on a slope.
RThevehicle is on solid, non-slippery and levelground.
Applythe electric parking brake manually.
Movethe front wheelstothestraight-aheadposition.
Vehicles with automatic transmission:Shift into position ].
Vehicles with level control system:Setthenormalvehicle level (→page192).
Switch offthe engine.
Make surethatthe engine cannotbestarted.
Placechocksorother suitable items underthe front andrear ofthe wheelthat is diago‐nally oppositethe wheelyou wishtochange.
Removethe hub caps if necessary(→page 409).
Raisethevehicle (→page410).
Removing and installing hub caps
Requirements:RThevehicle is preparedfor a wheelchange(→page 409).
Plastic hub cap
Toremove:turnthe center cover ofthe hubcap counter-clockwise andremovethe hubcap.
Toinstall:make surethatthe center cover ofthe hub cap is turned counter-clockwise.
Positionthe hub cap and turnthe centercover clockwise untilthe hub cap engagesphysically and audibly.

Aluminum hub cap
Toremove:position socket2on hub cap1.
The socket can befound inthe tire-changetool kit.
Position wheel wrench3on socket2.
Using wheel wrench3, turn hub cap1counter-clockwise andremoveit.
Toinstall:position hub cap1and turn untilit is completelyflush withthe wheel.
Position socket2on hub cap1.
Attachwheel wrench3tosocket2andtightenthe hub cap clockwise.Specified tighteningtorque:18lb-ft(25 Nm).
Raisingthevehicle whenchanging a wheel
Requirements:RThere are no persons inthevehicle.
RThevehicle has been preparedfor a wheelchange (→page 409).
RThe hub caps havebeenremoved(→page 409).
Important notes on usingthe jack:
RUse onlythevehicle-specific jackthat hasbeentested and approvedbyMercedes-Benztoraisethevehicle.
RThe jack is only designedforraising andholdingthevehiclefor a short time while awheel is beingchanged and notfor mainte‐nanceworkunderthevehicle.
RThe jack must be placed on afirm,flat andnon-slip surface. If necessary,use a large,flat, load-bearing, non-slip underlay.
RThefootofthe jack must be positionedverti‐cally underthe jack support point.
Rules of conduct whenthevehicle israised:
RNever placeyour hands orfeetunderthevehicle.
RNever lie underthevehicle.
RDo notstartthe engine and do notreleasethe electric parking brake.
RDo not open or close any doors orthe trunklid.

Ifthe electric parking brake should not be applied, e.g. whenwashingthevehicle in an automatic carwash or whenhavingthevehicletowed, leavethe ignition switched on. This does not include havingthevehicletowed withtherear axleraised.
Ifthe electric parking brake is not applied automatically:
Switch offthe ignition and switch it back on.
Release andthen applythe electric parking brake manually (→page164).
If it isstill not possibletoapplythe electric parking brake:
Visit aqualified specialistworkshop.
