Warning sticker
G
WARNING
Various warning labels are attached to your
vehicle. These warning labels are intended to
make you and others aware of various risks.
Do not remove any of these warning labels
unless explicitly instructed to do so by
information on the label itself.
Removing warning labels may cause you and
others to be unaware of certain risks which
may result in an accident and/or personal
injury.
Danger of electric shock The components of the hybrid system are
marked with yellow warning stickers that
warn you of high voltage. The electrical wires
for the vehicle's high-voltage electrical
system are orange in color. G
WARNING
The hybrid system operates at high voltage.
You could be seriously or even fatally injured
if you:
R tamper with components or the high-
voltage cables of the hybrid system
R touch components or high-voltage cables
in the hybrid system of a vehicle which has
been involved in an accident
R touch damaged components of the hybrid
system
Do not remove the hybrid system component
covers that are marked with warning stickers.
Do not tamper with components or the orange
high-voltage cables of the hybrid system. Engine compartment
Before opening the hood:
X Apply the parking brake and use the
DIRECT SELECT lever to shift the
transmission to P.
X Switch the ignition off.
The green or yellow READ Yindicator
(Y page 21) in the instrument cluster
goes out.
X Remove the SmartKey from the ignition or

X
Switch on the ignition.
X Start the vehicle.
READY indicator :lights up in the
multifunction display .The vehicle is ready
to drive.
X Depress the brake pedal and select a gear.
i The first time the brake pedal is
depressed, braking resistance is reduced
and brake pedal travel is greater than usual.
Noiseless start
When you start the vehicle, electric operation
mode can be used. The engine starts up when
the power required by the driver exceeds the
power currently available from the electric
motor.
Noiseless start is dependent on the outside
temperature and the operating temperature
of the hybrid system.
If the hybrid system has been started using
noiseless start, green READY indicator :
lights up in the multifunction display.
Pulling away If you are depressing the brake pedal when
shifting the transmission from
Pto Dor Rand
still see the Apply Brake to Shift from 'P' display message in the multifunction
display:
X Depress the brake pedal more firmly and
select the desired transmission position.
i For further information about pulling
away, see the vehicle Operator's Manual. ECO start/stop function Important safety notes
G
WARNING
When the vehicle is stationary and the green
READY indicator in the instrument cluster is
lit, this means that the engine has been
switched off automatically. All of the vehicle's
systems remain active.
If you remove your foot from the brake pedal
while in transmission position DorR, the
vehicle may pull away automatically.
There is a risk of an accident.
Exit the vehicle only if:
R both the green and yellow READY
indicators in the instrument cluster are off
R you have secured the vehicle to preven tit
from rolling away.
General notes
The ECO start/stop function automatically
switches off the engine at higher speeds
(Y page 23) and whe nthe vehicle comes to
a stop.
The ECO start/stop function is only available
in drive program E.
The system is operational when READY
indicator :turns green in the multifunction
display.
All vehicle systems remain active, e.g. the
automatic climate control.
Automatic engine switch-off
The engine is switched off automatically,
including when:
R the driver releases the accelerator pedal
and does not exceed a speed of 90 km/h
(140 km/h) (Y page 23) or
R the engine has reached its operating
temperature
R the driver’s seat belt is fastened and the
driver’s door is closed
R the driver only slightly depresses the
accelerator pedal
R the hood is closed and engaged properly 22

system is malfunctioning.
X
Switch off the ignition and turn it back on.
X Try to start the internal combustion engine again.
X If the internal combustion engine does not start, consult a
qualified specialist workshop. You wish to pull away
and the ECO start/stop

Problem Possible causes/consequences and
M Solutions
Braking resistance is
reduced and brake
pedal travel is longer
than usual. RBS system tes
trequired.
The first time the brake pedal is depressed after switching on the
engine, braking resistance is reduced and brake pedal travel is
greater than usual. When you release the brake pedal, pedal travel
then returns to normal. G
Risk of accident
RBS is malfunctioning.
X Observe any additional display messages in the multifunction
display ( Ypage 31) and the indicator and warning lamp
messages in the instrument cluster (Y page 34).The brake pedal
pulsates. RBS assists you when braking with an electronically-controlled

R
you cannot restart the internal combustion engine after several
seconds.
R red SRS warning lamp 6in the instrument cluster is lit.
X Consult a qualified specialist workshop. The hybrid system was
deactivated
automatically. The
multifunction display

G
WARNING
Vehicles with an electric motor generate
much less driving noise than vehicles with
internal combustion engines. As a result, your
vehicle may not be heard by other road users
in certain situations, for example when
parking or when your vehicle has not been
seen by other road users.
This requires you to adopt aparticularly
anticipatory driving style, as it is necessary to
allow for the possibility that other road users
may behave erratically. G
WARNING
When the vehicle is stationary and the green
READY indicator in the instrument cluster is
lit, this means that th eengine has been
switched off automatically. All of the vehicle's
systems remai nactive.
If you remove your foot from the brake pedal
while in transmission position DorR, the
vehicle may pull away automatically.
There is a risk of an accident. Exit the vehicle only if:
R
both the green and yellow READY
indicators in the instrument cluster are off
R you have secured the vehicle to preven tit
from rolling away.
X Apply the parking brake.
The red $indicator lamp in the
instrument cluster lights up.
X Use the DIRECT SELECT lever to shift the
transmission to P.
X Switch the ignition off.
The green or yellow READY indicator in the
instrument cluster goes out.
