seat belt on there ar seat &
WARNING Risk of accident if there ar
ben chseat, rear seat and seat backrest
are not engaged
The rear ben chseat, rear seat and seat back‐
re st may fold forw ards, even while theve hi‐
cle is in motion.
R As a result, theve hicle occupant will be
pressed into the seat belt with increased
fo rc e. The seat belt will not be able to
pr otect as intended and could cause
additional injur y. R
Objects or loads in the boot or load com‐
partment cann otbe restra ined bythe
seat backrest. #
Make sure that there ar ben chseat, the
re ar seat and the seat backrest are
engaged before everytrip. If
th e left and right seat backrests are not
engaged and loc ked in place, this will be shown
on the multifunction display on the instrument
clus ter.
If th e cent reseat backrest is not engaged and
loc ked in place, there d lock verification indica‐
to r will be visible.
When fitting a belt-secured child restra int
sy stem, obser vethefo llowing:
O Alw
ays comply with the manufacturer's
ins tallation and operating instructions for
th ech ild restra int sy stem used.
O Fo
r a child restra int sy stem in the "Univer‐
sal" or "Semi-Universal" categor y,make
sure that the sy stem has been appr oved for
th eve hicle seat. Obser
vethe no tes under "Suitability of
seats for attaching belt-secu redch ild
re stra int sy stems" (/ page61).
O When using a
weight category 0/0+
baby car seat and a weight category I
re ar wa rd-facing child restra int sy stem
on a rear seat: adjustthe front seat so that
th e seat does not touch thech ild restra int
sy stem.
O When using a
weight category I forw ard-
fa cing child restra int sy stem: remo vethe
head restra int from there spective seat, if
possible.
Af terth ech ild restra int sy stem has been
re mo ved, replace the head restra ints again
immediately and adjust them cor rectly.
O The ba
ckrest of thefo rw ard-facing child
re stra int sy stem must, as far as possible, be
re sting on the seat backrest of there ar
seat.
O If
th e head restra int of thech ild seat cannot
be fully extended when it is ins talled in the

th e front seat. If necessar y,mo vethe front
seat slightly forw ards. #
Install thech ild restra int sy stem.
The entire base of thech ild restra int sy stem
must alw aysre st on the sitting sur face of the
re ar seat. #
Alw ays make sure that the shoulder belt
st ra p is cor rectly routed from the seat belt outlet of
theve hicle tothe shoulder belt
guide on thech ild restra int sy stem.
The shoulder belt stra p must be routed
fo rw ard from the seat belt outlet.

using a rear wa rd-facing child restra int
sy stem while the front passenger airbag
is enabled
If yo u secure a child in a rear wa rd-facing
ch ild restra int sy stem on the front passenger
seat and thePA SSENGER AIR BAG OFF indi‐
cator lamp is off, the front passenger airbag
can deploy in theev ent of an accident.
The child could be stru ck bythe airbag.
Alw ays ensure that the front passenger air‐
bag is disabled. The PASSENGER AIR BAG
OFF indicator lamp must be lit.
NEVER use a rear wa rd-facing child restra int
sy stem on a seat with an ENABLED FRONT
AIRB AG. This can result in the DEAT H of or
SERIOUS INJU RYtotheCH ILD. Obser
vethe specific instructions forth ere ar‐
wa rd-facing and forw ard-facing child restra int

Alw ays obser vethest atus of the front passenger
airbag on thePA SSENGER AIR BAG OFF indica‐

R If it is absolutely necessary tofit a child
re stra int sy stem tothe front passenger seat,
alw ays obser vethe information on automatic
front passenger airbag shutoff (/ page 43).
R When using a rear wa rd-facing child restra int
sy stem on the front passenger seat, the front passenger airbag must alw
ays be disabled.
This is only the case if thePA SSENGER AIR
BA G OFF indicator lamp is lit continuously
(/ page 45).
R Ifth ePA SSENGER AIR BAG OFF indicator
lamp is off, the front passenger airbag is ena‐
bled. The front passenger airbag may deploy
during an accident.
Securing thech ild restra int sy stem with the
seat belt on the front passenger seat
When fitting a belt-secu redch ild restra int sys‐
te m on the front passenger seat, alw ays obser ve
th efo llowing:

Fully retract the seat cushion length adjust‐
ment. #
Adjust the seat cushion inclination so that
th e front edge of the seat cushion is in the
highest position and there ar edge of the
seat cushion is in the lo west position. #
Set the seat backrest tothe most vertical
position possible. #
Installth ech ild restra int sy stem.
The entire base of thech ild restra int sy stem
must alw aysre st on the sitting sur face of the
front passenger seat. #
Alw ays make sure that the shoulder belt
st ra p is cor rectly routed from the seat belt
outlet of theve hicle tothe shoulder belt
guide on thech ild restra int sy stem.
The shoulder belt stra p must be routed for‐
wa rds and down wards from the seat belt out‐
let. #
If necessar y,adjust the seat belt outlet and
th e front passenger seat according ly.66
Occupant saf ety

There are
child saf ety loc ksforth ere ar doors
and there ar side wind ows.
The child saf ety lock on there ar doors secures
each door separatel y.The doors can no longer
be opened from the inside. #
Press the le ver in direction 1(activate) or
2 (deactivate). #
Make sure that thech ild saf ety loc ksare
wo rking properly. Ac

position, pull it upwards. Release it as soon
as it begins toopen.
If an obs tacle obstructs theta ilgate during the
automatic opening process, bloc kage detection
will stop theta ilgate. The automatic bloc kage
de tection function is only an aid. It is not a sub‐
st itute foryo ur attentiveness. Closing

If objects, luggage or loads are not secured
or not secured suf ficientl y,they could slip,
tip ove r or be throw n around and thereby hit
ve hicle occupants.
There is a risk of injur y,particularly in the
ev ent of sudden braking or a sudden change
in direction. #

equipped with automatic keyre cognition. If a key
belonging totheve hicle is de tected in theve hi‐
cle, theta ilgate will not be loc ked.
No tethat theta ilgate will not be loc ked in the
fo llowing situation:
R You ha veloc kedth eve hicle and close the
ta ilgate while a key belonging totheve hicle
is inside theve hicle.
and
R A second key belonging totheve hicle is not
de tected outside theve hicle.
Au tomatic keyre cognition is only an aid and is
not a substitu teforyo ur attentiveness. #
Before locking, ensure that at least one key
belonging totheve hicle is outside theve hi‐
cle. #
Toclose the tailgate: pulltheta ilgate down‐
wa rds with the handle and let it drop into the
loc k.
Ve hicles with an EASY -PAC K tailgate &
WARNING Risk of becoming trapped
du ring au tomatic closing of theta ilgate
Body parts may become trapped. There may
be people in the closing area. #
Make sure that nobody is in the vicinity
of the closing area.
Use one of thefo llowing options tostop the
closing process:
R Press thep button on thekey.
R Press or pull there mo teoperating switch
on the driver's door.
R Press the closing or locking button on the
ta ilgate.
R Press theto p of the Mercedes star on the
ta ilgate. #
Vehicles with HANDS-FREE ACCESS: it is
also possible tostop the closing process by
making a kicking mo vement below there ar
bumper. #
Pull theta ilgate down wards slightly. Release
it as soon as it begins toclose. #
