!When testing the parking brake, operate the
vehicle only briefly (for amaximum of ten sec-
onds) on abrake test dynamometer. When
doing this, turn the SmartKey to position 0or
1 in the ignition. Failure to do this can cause
damage to the drive train or the brake system.
!Af unction or performance test should only
be carried out on atwo-axle dynamometer.
Before you operate the vehicle on such a
dynamometer, please consult aqualified
workshop. You could otherwise damage the
drive train or the brake system.
The all-wheel drive system ensures that all four
wheels are permanently driven. The all-wheel
drive system improves vehicle traction together
with ESP
®and 4ETS if adrive wheel spins due to
insufficient grip.
If ad rive wheel spins due to insufficient grip:
ROnly depress the accelerator pedal as far as
necessary when pulling away.
RTake your foot off the accelerator, slowly,
while the vehicle is in motion.
Only when you use winter tires (M+S tires) and, if necessary, snow chains in wintry driving con-
ditions (
Ypage 253). Only in this way can the
maximum effect of all-wheel drive be achieved.
For information on driving off-road, see
(
Ypage 127).
PARKTRONIC
Important safety notes
PARKTRONIC is an electronic parking aid with
ultrasonic sensors. It monitors the area around
your vehicle using six sensors in the front
bumper and four sensors in the rear bumper.
PARKTRONIC indicates visually and audibly the
distance between your vehicle and an object.
PARKTRONIC is only an aid. It is not areplace-
ment for your attention to your immediate sur-
roundings. You are always responsible for safe
maneuvering, parking and exiting aparking
space. Make sure that there are no persons,
animals or objects in the maneuvering area
while maneuvering and parking in parking
spaces.
!When parking, pay particular attention to
objects above or below the sensors, such as
flower pots or trailer drawbars. PARKTRONIC
does not detect such objects when they are in the immediate vicinity of the vehicle. You
could damage the vehicle or the objects.
The sensors may not detect snow and other
objects that absorb ultrasonic waves.
Ultrasonic sources such as an automatic car
wash, the compressed-air brakes on
atruck
or ap neumatic drill could cause PARKTRONIC
to malfunction.
PARKTRONIC may not function correctly on
uneven terrain.
PARKTRONIC is activated automaticallyw hen
you:
Rswitch on the ignition
Rshift the transmission to position D,Ror N
Rrelease the parking brake
PARKTRONIC is deactivated at speeds above
11 mph (18 km/h). It is reactivated at lower
speeds.
Range of the sensors
PARKTRONIC does not take objects into con-
sideration that are:
Rbelow the detection range, e.g. people, ani-
mals or objects.
Rabove the detection range, e.g. overhanging
loads, tail sections or loading ramps of goods
vehicles

After ateach-in process, the tire pressure mon-
itor automaticallyd etects new wheels or new
sensors. As long as aclear allocation of the tire
pressure value to the individual wheels is not
possible,t heTire
PressureMonitorActivedisplaym essage is shown instead of the tire
pressure display. The tire pressures are already
being monitored.
If as pare wheel is mounted, the system may
continue to show the tire pressure of the wheel
that has been removed for afew minutes. If this
occurs, note that the value displayed for the
position where the spare wheel is installed is not
the same as the current tire pressure of the
spare wheel.
Tire pressure monitor warning mes-
sages
If the tire pressure monitor detects apressure
loss in one or more tires, awarning message is
shown in the multifunction display. The yellow
h tire pressure warning lamp then lights up.
RIf the Correct Tire Pressuremessage
appears in the multifunction display, the tire
pressure in at least one tire is too low. The tire
pressure must be corrected at the next oppor-
tunity.
RIf the Check Tiresmessage appears in the
multifunction display, the tire pressure in at
least one tire has dropped significantly. The
tires must be checked.
RIf the Caution -Tire Malfunc.message
appears in the multifunction display, the tire
pressure in at least one tire has dropped sud-
denly. The tires must be checked.
Be sure to observe the instructionsa nd safety
notes in the displaym essages in the "Tires" sec-
tion (
Ypage 183).
If the wheel positions on the vehicle are rotated, the tire pressures may be displayed for the
wrong positions for ashort time. This is rectified
after afew minutes of driving, and the tire pres-
sures are displayed for the correct positions.
Restarting the tire pressure monitor
When you restart the tire pressure monitor, all
existing warning messages are deleted and the
h warning lamp goes out. The monitor uses
the currently set tire pressures as the reference
valuesf or monitoring. In most cases, the tire pressure monitor will automaticallyd
etect the
new reference valuesa fter you have changed
the tire pressure. However, you can also set ref-
erence valuesm anuallyasdescribed here. The
tire pressure monitor then monitors the new tire
pressure values.
XSet the tire pressure to the value recommen-
ded for the corresponding driving situation on
the Tire and Loading Information placard on
the B-pillar on the driver's side.
You can find more tire pressures for various
operating conditions in the tire pressure table
inside the filler flap.
Observe the information on tire pressure
when doing so (
Ypage 254).
XMake sure that the tire pressure is correct on
all four wheels.
XMake sure that the SmartKey is in position 2
in the ignition lock.
XPress the =or; button on the steering
wheel to select the Serv.menu.
XPress the9or: button to select
Tire Pressure.
XPress the abutton.
The multifunction displays hows the current
tire pressure for each tire or the Tire pres‐
surewillbedisplayedafterdrivingafew minutesmessage appears.
XPress the :button.
The UseCurrentPressuresasNewRef‐erenceValuesmessage appears in the mul-
tifunction display.
If you wish to confirm the restart:
XPress the abutton.
The TirePress.MonitorRestartedmes-
sage appears in the multifunction display.
After driving for afew minutes, the system
checks whether the current tire pressures are within the specified range. The new tire pres-
sures are then accepted as reference values
and monitored.
If you wish to cancelt he restart:
XPress the%button.
The tire pressure valuess tored at the last
restart will continue to be monitored.

Uniform Tire QualityG rading Stand-

Overview ofTire QualityG rading Stand-
ards
Uniform Tir eQuality Grading Standards are U.S.
governmen tspecifications. Their purpose is to
provid edriver swithu nifor mreliable information
on tire performance data. Tir emanufacturers
hav etog radetires usin gthree performance fac -
tors: :tread wear grade, ;traction grad eand
= temperature grade. These regulation sdonot
apply to Canada. Nevertheless, all tires sold in
North America are provided wit hthe corre-
sponding qualit ygrading marking sontheside -
wall of th etire.
Quality grades can be found, wher eapplicable,
on th etires idewall between tread shoulder and
maximum section width.
Example:
RTreadwear grade: 200
RTraction grade: AA
RTemperaturegrade: A
All passenger car tires mus tconfor mtot hestat-
utory safet yrequirements in addition to these
grades.
