GWARNING
Due to the high center of gravity, the vehicle
may start to skid and roll over in the event of
an abrupt steering maneuver and/or when
the vehicle's speed is not adapted to the road
conditions. There is arisk of an accident.
Always adapt your speed and driving style to
the vehicle's driving characteristics and to the
prevailing road and weather conditions.
Utility vehicles have asignificantly higher roll-
over rate than other types of vehicles.
Failure to operate this vehicle safely may result
in an accident, rollover of the vehicle, and severe
or fatal injury.
In ar ollover crash, an unbelted person is signif-
icantly more likely to die than aperson wearing
as eat belt.
You and all vehicle occupants should always
wear your seat belts.
Operating safety
Important safety notes
GWARNING
If you do not have the prescribed service/
maintenance work or any required repairs
carried out, this can result in malfunction sor
system failures. There is arisk of an accident.
Always have the prescribed service/mainte-
nance work as well as any required repairs
carried out at aqualified specialist workshop.
GWARNING
Flammable material such as leaves, grass or
twigs may ignite if they come into contact with
hot parts of the exhaust system. There is arisk
of fire.
When driving off road or on unpaved roads,
check the vehicle's underside regularly.I n
particular, remove parts of plants or other
flammable materials which have become
trapped. In the case of damage, contact a
qualified specialist workshop.
GWARNING
Modifications to electronic components, their software as well as wiring can impair their
function and/or the function of other net-
worked components. In particular, systems
relevant to safety could also be affected. As a
result, these may no longer function as inten-
ded and/or jeopardize the operating safety of
the vehicle. There is an increased risk of an
accident and injury.
Never tamper with the wiring as well as elec-
tronic components or their software. You
should have all work to electrical and elec-
tronic equipment carried out at aqualified
specialist workshop.
!There is arisk of damage to the vehicle if:
Rthe vehicle becomes stuck ,e.g. on ahigh
curb or an unpaved road
Ryou drive too fast over an obstacle, e.g. a
curb, aspeed bump or apothole in the road
Rah eavy object strikes the underbody or
parts of the chassis
In situations like this, the body, the under-
body, chassis parts, wheels or tires could be
damaged without the damage being visible.
Components damaged in this way can unex-
pectedly fail or, in the case of an accident, no
longer withstand the loads they are designed
to.
If the underbody paneling is damaged, com-
bustible materials such as leaves, grass or
twigs can gather between the underbody and
the underbody paneling. If these materials
come in contact with hot parts of the exhaust system, they can catch fire.
In such situations, have the vehicle checked
and repaired immediately at aqualified spe-
cialist workshop. If on continuing your jour-
ney you notic ethat driving safety is impaired,
pull over and stop the vehicle immediately,
paying attention to road and traffic condi-
tions. In such cases, consult aqualified spe-
cialist workshop.

flap is open, the yellow reserve fuel warning
lamp and the =(USA only) or ;(Can-

XRemove the SmartKey from the ignition lock.
XTurn the fuel filler cap counterclockwise and
remove it.
XInser tthe fuel filler cap into the holder
bracket on the inside of filler flap ?.
XCompletely insert the filler neck of the fuel
pump nozzle into the tank and refuel.
XOnly fill the tank until the pump nozzle
switches off.
Do not add any more fuel after the pump stops
filling for the first time. Otherwise, fuel may leak
out.
Closing the fuel filler flap
XReplace the cap on the filler neck and turn
clockwise until it engages audibly.
XClose the fuel filler flap.
Close the fuel filler flap before lockin gthe vehi-
cle. If you are driving with the fuel filler cap open, the

reservef uel warning lamp flashes. Ames-
sage appears in the multifunction display
(
Ypage 179).
Fuel filler flap emergency release
The emergency release is located in the cargo
compartment ,onthe right-hand side when
viewed in the direction of travel, behind the rear
panel trim.
The vehicle walls in the area around the emer-
genc yrelease have sharp edges. There is arisk
of injury. Avoid contact with the edges on the
inside of the vehicle body.
XOpen the rear door.
XPull off edge protection ;.
XRemove rear wall trim:.
XPull emergency release =in the direction of
the arrow.
The fuel filler flap is unlocked.

For safety reasons, Mercedes-Benz recom-
mends only installing the following brake disks
and brake pads/linings:
Rbrake disks that havebeena pproved by
Mercedes-Benz
Rbrake pads/lining sthat hav ebeena pproved
by Mercedes-Benz or that are of an equivalent
standard of quality
Other brake disks or brake pads/lining scan
compromise the safety of your vehicle.
Alway sreplace al lbrake disks and brake pads/
linings on an axl eatthe sam etime. Always
install new brake pads/lining swhenr eplacing
brake disks.
The vehicle is equipped with lightweight brake
disks to which the wheel assembly with rim and
threaded connectio nismatched.
The use of brake discs other than those
approved by Mercedes-Benz may alter track
width and is subject to approval ,ifapplicable.
Shock-typ eloads whe nhandling the brake
discs, such as whe nchanging wheels ,can lead
to areduction in comfortw hend riving with light-
weigh tbrake discs. Avoid shock-type loads on
the lightweight brake disks, particularly on the
brake plate.
Mercedes-Benz recommends that yo uonly use
brake fluid that has bee nspeciall yapproved for
your vehicle by Mercedes-Benz, or which corre-
sponds to an equivalent quality standard .Brake
fluid which has not bee napproved for
Mercedes-Benz vehicles or which is not of an
equivalent quality could affect your vehicle's
operating safety.
High-performance brake (Mercedes-
AMG vehicles)
The AMG brake systems are designe dfor heavy

The wear of individua lbrake system compo-
nents such as the brake pads/lining sorbrake
discs depends on individua ldriving styl eand

For this reason, it is impossible to state amile-
ag ethat will be valid under al lcircumstances. An
aggressive driving styl ewilll ea dtoh ighw ear. You can obtain more information on this from a
qualified specialist workshop.
New and replaced brake pads and discs only
reach theiro
ptimum braking effect afte rseveral
hundred kilometers of driving. Compensate for
this by applying greater force to the brake pedal. Keept his in mind ,and adap tyou rd riving and
braking accordingly during this break-in period.
Excessive heavy braking results in correspond-
ingl yhighb rake wear. If the brake pads/linings
hav ereached theirw earlim it, the multifunction
displa yshowsac orresponding message. Espe-
ciall yfor hig hperformance driving, it is impor-
tant to maintain and hav ethe brake system
checked regularly.

When towingatrailer, your vehicle's handling

The vehicle/trailer combination:

Ris restricted in its acceleration and gradient-
climbing capability
Rhas an increased braking distance
Ris affected more by stron gcrosswinds
Rdemands more sensitive steering

This could impair the handling characteristics.
Adapt your driving style accordingly. Maintain a
safe distance. Drive carefully.
When towing atrailer, alwaysa djust your speed
to the currentr oad and weather conditions. Do
not exceed the maximum permissible speed for
your vehicle/trailer combination.
Notes on towing atrailer
General notes
RDo not exceed the maximum permissible
speed for vehicle/trailer combinations in the
relevant country.
This lowers the risk of an accident.
ROnly install an approved trailer coupling on
your vehicle.
Further information on availability and on
installation is available from any authorized
Mercedes-Benz Center.
RThe bumpers of your vehicle are not suitable
for installing detachable trailer couplings.
RDo not install hired trailer couplings or other
detachable trailer couplings on the bumpers
of your vehicle.
RIf you do not need the ball coupling, remove
the ball coupling from the ball coupling
recess. This will reduce the risk of damage to
the ball coupling.
When towing atrailer, set the tire pressure on
the rear axle of the towing vehicle for the max-
imum load. Further information on the tire pres-
sure table in the fuel filler flap (
Ypage 119).
Please not ethat when towing atrailer,
PARKTRONIC (
Ypage 140) and Blind Spot
Assist (Ypage 137) availability is limited or not
available at all. The height of the ball coupling changes with the
load of the vehicle. If necessary, use
atrailer
with aheight-adjustable drawbar.
You will find permissible trailer loads under
"Technical data" (
Ypage 284).
Driving tips
XObserve the notes on ESP®trailer stabiliza-
tion (Ypage 60).
XOn long and steep downhill gradients ,select
shift range 1,2or 3(Ypage 114) in good time.
This also applies if you have activated cruise
control or the speed limiter.
XIf necessary, shift the transfer case to LOW
RANGE (Ypage 146).
This will use the braking effect of the engine, so that less braking will be required to main-
tain the speed. This relieves the load on the
brake system and preventst he brakes from
overheatin gand wearing too quickly. If you
need additional braking, depress the brake
pedal repeatedly rather than continuously.
The maximum permissible speed for vehicle/
trailer combinations depends on the type of
trailer. Beforeb eginningthe journey, check the
trailer's document stosee what the maximum
permitted speed is. Observe the maximum per-
missible speed in the relevant country.
For certain Mercedes-Benz vehicles, the maxi-
mum permissible rear axle load is increased
when towing atrailer. See the "Technical data"
section to find out whether this applies to your
vehicle (
Ypage 284). In the event of increased
rear axle load, the car/trailer combination may
not exceed amaximum speed of 60 mph
(100 km/ h)for reasons concerning the operat-
ing permit. This als oapplie sinc ountries in
which the maximu mpermissible speedf or car/
trailer combinations is greater than 60 mph
(100 km/h).
When towing atrailer, you rvehicle's handling
characteristics wil lbedifferent in comparison to
when driving without atrailer and it wil lcon-
sume more fuel.

rough and cracked.
ROnly use leather care agent sthat have

It exhibit snatural surface characteristics, for

Seat covers of other materials

Cleaning the seat belts
GWARNING
Seat belts can become severely weakened if
bleached or dyed. This could cause the seat
belts to tear or fail, for instance, in the event of an accident. This poses an increased risk of
injury or fatal injury.
Never bleach or dye the seat belts.
!Do not clean the seat belts using chemical
cleanin gagents. Do not dry the seat belts by
heating at temperatures above 176 ‡(80 †)
or in direct sunlight.

Rbulges on tires
Rdeformation or severe corrosion on wheels
Regularly checkt he tire tread depth and the
condition of the tread across the whole width of
the tire (
Ypage 252). In order to inspec tthe
inne rside of the tire surface, turn the steering
wheel to full lock.
All wheels must have avalve cap to protect the
valve against dirt and moisture. Do not install
anythin gontot he valve other than the standard
valve cap or avalve cap approved by Mercedes-
Benzf or your vehicle. Do not use any other valve
caps or systems ,e.g. tire pressure monitoring
systems.
You should regularly checkt he pressure of all
your tires includin gthe spare wheel, particularly
prior to long trips. Adjust the tire pressure as
necessary (
Ypage 254).
The servicel ife of tires depends, among other
things, on the following factors:

GWARNING
Insufficientt ire tread will reduce tire traction.
The tire is no longer able to dissipate water.
This means that on wet road surfaces,t he risk
of hydroplaning increases, in particular where speed is not adapted to suit the driving con-
ditions. There is arisk of accident.
If the tire pressure is too high or too low, tires
may exhibit differentl evels of wear at differ-
ent location sonthe tire tread. Thus, you
should regularly checkt he tread depth and
the condition of the tread across the entire
width of all tires.
Minimum tire tread depth for:
RSummer tires: âin (3 mm)
RM+S tires: ãin (4 mm)
For safety reasons ,replace the tires before
the legally prescribed limit for the minimum
tire tread depth is reached.
Marking :shows where the bar indicator
(arrow) for tread wear is integrated int othe tire
tread.
Treadwear indicators (TWI) are required by law. Six indicators are positioned on the tire tread.
They are visible onc eatread depth of approx-
imately áin (1.6 mm) has been reached. If this
is the case, the tire is so worn that it must be
replaced.
Selecting, mounting and replacing
tires
ROnly mount tires and wheels of the same type
and make.
ROnly mount tires of the correct size ont othe
wheels.
RBreak in new tires at moderates peeds for the
first 60 miles (100 km). The new tires only
reach their full performanc eafter this dis-
tance.
RDo not drive with tires which have too little
tread depth, as this significantly reduces the
traction on wet roads (hydroplaning).
RReplace the tires after six years at the latest,
regardless of wear. This also applies to the
spare wheel.
Winter operation
General notes
Have your vehicle winter-proofed at aqualified
specialist workshop at the onset of winter.
Observe the notes in the "Changing awheel"
section (
Ypage 269).

Drivingwiths ummer tires
At temperature sbelo w45‡( +7 †), elasticity in
summe rtires is significantly lower and thus also
traction and braking power. Change the tires on
you rvehicle to M+S tires .Using summe rtires at
very cold temperatures coul dcause cracks to
form, therebyd amaging the tires permanently.
Mercedes-Benz cannot accep tresponsibility for
this type of damage.
GWARNING
Damaged tires can cause tire inflation pres-
sure loss.Asar esult, you couldlose control of
you rvehicle. There is arisk of accident.
Check the tires regularly for signs of damage
and replace any damaged tires immediately.
M+S tires
GWARNING
M+S tires with atire tread depth of less than
ã in (4 mm )are not suitabl efor use in winter
and do not provide sufficient traction. There is
ar isk of an accident.
M+S tires with atread depth of less than ãin
(4 mm) must be replaced immediately.

that differs from the wheel to be replaced.
Ronly use aspare wheel that differs from the
wheel to be replaced for ashort time.
Rdo not deactivate ESP®.
Rhave aspare wheel that differs from the
wheel that has beenc hangedreplaced at
the nearest qualified specialist workshop.
You must observe the correct wheel and
tire dimensions as wel lasthe wheel type.
Do not exceed amaximu mspeedof50m ph
(80 km/h) if aspare wheel of adifferent size is
installed.
At temperatures below 45 ‡(+7 †), use winter
tires or all-season tires. Both type softire are
identified by the M+S marking.
Only winter tires bearing the isnowflake
symbol in addition to the M+S marking provide
the best possibleg rip in wintry road conditions.
Only these tires wil lallow driving safety systems
such as ABS and ESP
®to function optimally in
winter. Theset ires have beend eveloped specif-
ically for driving in snow.
Use M+S tires of the same make and tread on all
wheels to maintain safe handling characteris-
tics.
Always observe the maximu mpermissible
speeds pecified for the M+S tires you have
mounted.
When you have mounted the M+S tires:
XCheck the tire pressures (Ypag e257).
XRestart the tire pressure monitor
(Ypag e259).

If you drive too fast with snow chains moun-
ted, they may snap. As aresult, you could
injure others and damage the vehicle. There is
ar isk of an accident.
Observe the maximu mpermissible speedf or
operation with snow chains.
!Information about the use of snow chain
compatibleA MG winter tires is applicable for
AMG tires. Use of snow chains is only per-
missible with these tires.
!On some tire sizes there is not enoug hspace
for snow chains. To avoi ddamage to the vehi-
cle or tires, observe the "Wheel and tire com-
