Unlocking and opening doors from
the inside
You can open a door from inside the vehicle
even if it has been locked. You can only open the
rear doors from inside the vehicle if they are notsecured by the child-proof locks (
Ypage 57). If
the vehicle has previously been locked with the
SmartKey, opening a door from the inside will
trigger the anti-theft alarm system. Switch off
the alarm (
Ypage 62).
Only open the door when the traffic situation
permits.
XFront doors: pull door handle ;.
If the door is locked, locking knob :pops up.
The door is unlocked and can be opened.
XRear doors: pull the locking knob of the rear
door up.
The door is unlocked.
XPull the door handle on the rear door.
Centrally locking and unlocking the
vehicle from the inside
You can centrally lock or unlock the vehicle from
the inside.
The central locking button does not lock or
unlock the fuel filler flap.
The switches are on the driver’s door.
XTo unlock: press button :.
XTo lock:press button ;.
If all the doors are closed, the vehicle locks.
The doors can be opened from the inside. You
can only open the rear doors from inside the
vehicle if they are not secured by the child-proof
locks (
Ypage 57)
You cannot unlock the vehicle centrally from the
inside if the vehicle has been locked with the
SmartKey.
If a locked door is opened from the inside, the
previous unlock status of the vehicle will be
taken into consideration if:
Rthe vehicle was locked using the locking but-
ton for the central locking, or
Rlocked automatically
The vehicle will be fully unlocked if it had previ-
ously been fully unlocked. If only the driver's
door had been previously unlocked, only the
door which has been opened from the inside is
unlocked.

XTo deactivate:press and hold button :for
approximately five seconds until a tone
sounds.
XTo activate: press and hold button ;for
approximately five seconds until a tone
sounds.
If you press one of the two buttons and do not
hear a tone, the relevant setting has already
been selected.
The vehicle is locked automatically when the
ignition is switched on and the wheels are turn-
ing.
You could therefore be locked out if:
Rthe vehicle is being pushed.
Rthe vehicle is being towed.
Rthe vehicle is being tested on a dynamometer.
You can also switch the automatic locking func-
tion on and off using the on-board computer
(
Ypage 170).
Locking/unlocking the driver's door
with the mechanical key
XInsert the mechanical key into the lock of the driver's door as far as it will go.
XTo unlock: turn the mechanical key counter-
clockwise as far as it will go to position 1.
XTo lock:turn the mechanical key clockwise as
far as it will go to position 2.
If you use the mechanical key to unlock and
open the driver's door, the anti-theft alarm sys-
tem will be triggered. Switch off the alarm
(
Ypage 62).
Rear door
Important safety notes
GWARNING
Combustion engines emit poisonous exhaust
gases such as carbon monoxide. If the rear
door is open when the engine is running, par-
ticularly if the vehicle is moving, exhaust
fumes could enter the passenger compart-
ment. There is a risk of poisoning.
Turn off the engine before opening the rear
door. Never drive with the rear door open.
GWARNING
If objects, luggage or loads are not secured or
not secured sufficiently, they could slip, tip
over or be flung around and thereby hit vehicle
occupants. There is a risk of injury, particu-
larly in the event of sudden braking or a sud-
den change in direction.
Always store objects so that they cannot be
flung around. Secure objects, luggage or
loads against slipping or tipping before the
journey.
!The tailgate swings out to the side when
opened. Therefore, make sure that there is
sufficient clearance.
Do not leave the SmartKey in the cargo com-
partment. Otherwise, you could lock yourself
out.
You should preferably place luggage or loads in
the cargo compartment. Observe the loading
guidelines (
Ypage 209).
Opening
The rear door must be unlocked before it can be opened.
XPress the %button on the SmartKey.

Closing
XPush the rear door closed from outside the
vehicle.
XLock the vehicle with the &button on the
SmartKey.
Side windows
Important safety notes
GWARNING
While opening the side windows, body parts
could become trapped between the side win-
dow and the door frame as the side window
moves. There is a risk of injury.
Make sure that nobody touches the side win-
dow during the opening procedure. If some-
body becomes trapped, release the switch or
pull the switch to close the side window again.
GWARNING
While closing the side windows, body parts in
the closing area could become trapped. There is a risk of injury.
When closing make sure that no parts of the
body are in the closing area. If somebody
becomes trapped, release the switch or press
the switch to open the side window again.
GWARNING
If children operate the side windows they
could become trapped, particularly if they are left unsupervised. There is a risk of injury.
Activate the override feature for the rear side
windows. When leaving the vehicle, always
take the SmartKey with you and lock the vehi-
cle. Never leave children unsupervised in the
vehicle.
Opening and closing the side win-
dows
The switches for all side windows are located on
the driver's door. There is also a switch on each
door for the corresponding side window.
The switches on the driver's door take prece-
dence.
:Front left
;Front right
=Rear right
?Rear left
XTurn the SmartKey to position 1or2 in the
ignition lock.
XTo open manually: press and hold the cor-
responding switch.
XTo open automatically: press the corre-
sponding switch beyond the point of resist-
ance and release it.
Automatic operation is started.
XTo interrupt automatic operation: press/
pull the corresponding switch again.
XTo close manually: pull the corresponding
switch and hold it.
You can continue to operate the side windows
after you switch off the engine or remove the

SmartKey. This function remains active for five
minutes or until you open a front door.
The side windows cannot be operated from the
rear when the override feature for the side win-
dows is activated (
Ypage 57).
Convenience opening
i
The convenience opening feature can only
be operated using the SmartKey. The Smart-
Key must be close to the driver's door handle.
You can ventilate the vehicle before you start
driving. To do this, the SmartKey is used to carry
out the following functions simultaneously:
Runlock the vehicle
Ropen the side windows
Ropen the sliding sunroof
Rswitch on the seat ventilation for the driver's
and front-passenger seat
XPoint the tip of the SmartKey at the driver's
door handle.
XPress and hold the %button on the Smart-
Key until the side windows and the sliding
sunroof are in the desired position.
XTo interrupt convenience opening: release
the % button.
Convenience closing feature
Important safety notes
GWARNING
When the convenience closing feature is oper- ating, parts of the body could become trapped
in the closing area of the side window and the
sliding sunroof. There is a risk of injury.
Observe the complete closing procedure
when the convenience closing feature is oper-
ating. Make sure that no body parts are in
close proximity during the closing procedure.
Operation
iThe "convenience closing feature" can only
be operated using the SmartKey. The Smart-
Key must be close to the driver's door handle.
When you lock the vehicle, you can simultane-
ously:
Rclose the side windows
Rclose the sliding sunroof
XPoint the tip of the SmartKey at the driver's
door handle.
XPress and hold the &button on the Smart-
Key until the side windows and the sliding
sunroof are fully closed.
XMake sure that all the side windows and the
sliding sunroof are closed.
XTo interrupt convenience closing: release
the & button.
Problems with the side windows
GWARNING
Closing the side windows with increased force or without the anti-entrapment feature could lead to serious or even fatal injury. Make sure that nobody can become trapped when closing the side
windows.

workshop.
Sliding sunroof
Important safety notes
GWARNING
While opening and closing the sliding sunroof, body parts in close proximity could become
trapped. There is a risk of injury.
Make sure that no body parts are in close
proximity during the opening and closing pro-
cedures.
If somebody becomes trapped:
Rrelease the switch immediately, or
Rduring automatic operation, push the
switch briefly in any direction
The opening or closing procedure will be stop- ped.
GWARNING
If children operate the sliding sunroof they
could become trapped, particularly if they are left unsupervised. There is a risk of injury.
When leaving the vehicle, always take the
SmartKey with you and lock the vehicle. Never
leave children unsupervised in the vehicle.
!Only open the sliding sunroof if it is free of
snow and ice. Otherwise, malfunctions may
occur.
Do not allow anything to protrude from the
sliding sunroof. Otherwise, the seals could be
damaged.
!The weather can change abruptly. It could
start to rain or snow. Make sure that the slid- ing sunroof is closed when you leave the vehi-
cle. The vehicle electronics can be damaged if
water enters the vehicle interior.
Resonance noises can occur in addition to the
usual airflow noises when the sliding sunroof is
open. They are caused by minor pressure fluc-
tuations in the vehicle interior. Change the posi-
tion of the sliding sunroof or open a side window
slightly to reduce or eliminate these noises.

Operating the sliding sunroof man-
ually
The actuator motor for the sliding sunroof is
located on the left-hand side of the cargo com-
partment, behind the rear panel trim.
Removing the rear panel trim
XOpen the rear door.
XRemove edge protection :on door pillar in
the direction of arrow ;.
XPull rear panel trim=in the direction of
arrow ?as far as necessary, so that the
electrical connections can be reached.
XDisconnect the electrical connections.
XCompletely remove rear panel trim =.
Opening/closing the sliding sunroof manually
XRemove lug wrenchAfrom the vehicle tool
kit (Ypage 244).
XPlace lug wrench Aonto the hexagon nut of
the actuator motor.
XTo open: turn lug wrench Acounter-clock-
wise.
XTo close: turn lug wrench Aclockwise.

Problems with the sliding sunroof
GWARNING
You could be severely or even fatally injured when closing the sliding sunroof with increased
closing force or if the anti-entrapment feature is deactivated. Make sure that nobody can become
trapped when closing the sliding sunroof.

Correct driver's seat position

Electrical seat adjustment (

When adjusting the seat, make sure that:
Ryou are as far away from the driver's air bag as
possible
Ryou are sitting in a normal upright position
Ryou can fasten the seat belt properly
Ryou have moved the backrest to an almost
vertical position
Ryou have set the seat cushion angle so that
your thighs are gently supported
Ryou can depress the pedals properly
XCheck whether the head restraint is adjusted
properly (Ypage 76).
When doing so, make sure that you have
adjusted the head restraint so that the back of
your head is supported at eye level by the
center of the head restraint.
XObserve the safety guidelines on steering
wheel adjustment (Ypage 74).
XMake sure that steering wheel :is adjusted
properly.
Adjusting the steering wheel electrically
(
Ypage 80). When adjusting the steering wheel, make sure
that:
Ryou can hold the steering wheel with your
arms slightly bent
Ryou can move your legs freely
Ryou can see all the displays in the instrument
cluster clearly
XObserve the safety guidelines for seat belts
(Ypage 40).
XCheck whether you hav
e fastened seat
belt ;properly (Ypage 41).
The seat belt should:
Rfit snugly across your body
Rbe routed across the middle of your shoulder
Rbe routed across your hips in the pelvic area
XBefore starting off, adjust the rear-view mirror
and the exterior mirrors in such a way that you
have a good view of road and traffic condi-
tions (
Ypage 82).
XVehicles with a memory function: save the
seat, steering wheel and exterior mirror set-
tings with the memory function (
Ypage 84).
Seats
Important safety notes
GWARNING
Children could become trapped if they adjust
the seats, particularly when unattended.
There is a risk of injury.
When leaving the vehicle, always take the
SmartKey with you and lock the vehicle. Never
leave children unsupervised in the vehicle.
The seats can still be adjusted when there is no
SmartKey in the ignition lock.
GWARNING
When you adjust a seat, you or other vehicle
occupants could become trapped, e.g. on the seat guide rail. There is a risk of injury.
Make sure when adjusting a seat that no one
has any body parts in the sweep of the seat.
Observe the safety notes on "Air bags"
(
Ypage 44) and "Children in the vehicle"
(Ypage 50).

XMake sure that the cup holder on the center
console is folded down (Ypage 215).
XMove the seat as far forward as possible andthe head restraint in as far as possible.
Rear seat head restraints
Important safety notes
GWARNING
If the head restraints are not installed or not
adjusted correctly, they cannot provide pro-
tection as intended. There is an increased risk
of injury in the head and neck area, e.g. in the event of an accident or when braking.
Always drive with the head restraints instal-
led. Before driving off, make sure for every
vehicle occupant that the center of the head
restraint supports the back of the head at
about eye level.
Observe the following when adjusting the head
restraints:
XDo not rotate the head restraints of the front
and rear seats.
Otherwise, you cannot adjust the height and
angle of the head restraints correctly.
XAdjust the head restraint so that it is as close
as possible to your head.
Adjusting the rear seat head restraint
height
XOnce the head restraint is fully lowered, press
release catch :.
XTo raise:pull the head restraint up to the
desired position.
XTo lower: press release catch :and push
the head restraint down until it is in the
desired position.
Installing/removing the rear seat head
restraints
XTo remove: pull the head restraint up to the
stop.
XPress release catch :and pull the head
restraint out of the guides.
XTo re-install: place the head restraint in the
guides of the backrest.
iThe notches on the guide rod must be on the
left-hand side when viewed in the direction of
travel.
XPush the head restraint down until you hear it
engage in position.
Adjusting the multicontour seat
