The central locking button does not lock or
unlock the fuel filler flap.

i You cannot unlock the vehicle centrally
from the inside if the vehicle has been
locked from the outside using the key.
i It is only possible to lock the vehicle cen-
trally if all doors are closed. Automatic locking feature

for about five seconds until a tone sounds.
X To activate: press and hold button ;for
about five seconds until a tone sounds.
i If you press one of the two buttons and
do not hear a tone, the relevant setting has
already been selected. The vehicle is locked automatically when the
ignition is switched on and the wheels are
turning.
You could therefore be locked out if:
R
the vehicle is being pushed.
R the vehicle is being towed.
R the vehicle is being tested on a dynamom-
eter.
You can also switch the automatic locking
function on and off using the on-board com-
puter (Y page 223). Unlocking the driver's door (emer-
gency key element)
If the vehicle can no longer be centrally
unlocked with the key, use the emergency
key element.
If you use the emergenc ykey element to
unlock and open the driver's door, the anti-
thef talarm system will be triggered
(Y page 64).
Take the emergency key elemen tout of the
key (Y page 70). X
Inser tthe emergency key element into the
lock of the driver's door as far as it will go.
X Turn the emergency key element anti-
clockwise to position 1.
The door is unlocked.
i On right-hand-drive vehicles, turn the
emergency key element clockwise. 74

The climate control system switches to the
following functions:
R
cooling with air dehumidification (only
with engine running)
R high airflow (depending on the outside
temperature)
R high temperature (depending on the out-
side temperature)
R air distribution to the windscreen and
fronts ide windows
R air-recirculation mode off
X To deactivate: press the¬button.
The indicator lamp in the ¬button goes
out. The previous settings are reactivated.
The cooling with air dehumidification func-
tion remains on. Air-recirculation mode
remains deactivated.

X Press the Ãbutton.
The indicator lamp in the ¬button goes
out. Airflow and air distribution are set to
automatic mode.

X Turn controls :orB clockwise or anti-
clockwise (Y page 125).

X Press the KorI button. Demisting the windows

Activate the Ácooling with air dehu-

Turn the key to position 2(Ypage 143) in
the ignition lock.

Indicator lamp :lights up.

i At outside temperatures above 10 †, the
windscreen heating cannot be activated.
Indicator lamp :lights up briefly when you
attempt to activate it and then goes out
again.
i The windscreen heating has a high cur-
rent draw. You should therefore switch it
off as soon as the windscreen is clear. The
windscreen heating otherwise switches
itself off automatically after 10 minutes.
i If the battery voltage is too low, the wind-
screen heating may switch off. If the wind-
screen heating is automatically deactiva-
ted, indicator lamp :flashes. The wind-
screen heating will automatically switch 132

In order for the battery to achieve the maxi-
mum possible service life, it must always be
sufficiently charged.
Comply with safety precautions and take pro-
tective measures when handling batteries. WARNING
Avoid the creation of sparks and
heat.
Avoid fire, naked flames and smok-
ing. Creation of sparks.
Battery acid is caustic.
Avoid contact with the skin, eyes
or clothing.
Wear eye protection.
Keep childre
naway. Observe this Owner's Manual.
The vehicle battery, like other batteries, can
discharge over time if you do not use the
vehicle. In such cases, have the battery dis-
connected at a qualified specialist workshop.
You can also charge the battery with a
charger recommended by Mercedes-Benz.

Explosive gases are created during charging
and jump-starting.
For safety reasons, Mercedes-Benz recom-
mends that you only use batteries which have
been tested and approved for your vehicle by
Mercedes-Benz .These batteries provide
increased impact protection to prevent vehi-
cle occupants from suffering acid burns
should the battery be damaged in the event
of an accident.
Have the battery charge checked more fre-
quently if you use the vehicle mainly for short trips or if you leave it standing idle for a
lengthy period. Consult a qualified specialist
workshop if you wish to leave your vehicle
parked up for a long period of time.

When you park the vehicle, remove the
key if you do not require any electrical con-
sumers. The vehicle will then use very little
energy, thus conserving battery power.
i If the power supply has been interrupted,
e.g. due to a discharged battery, you will
have to:
R set the clock. Information on setting the
clock can be found in the separate oper-
ating instructions.
On vehicles with COMAND Online and a
navigation system, the clock is set auto-
matically.
R reset the head restraints on the front
seats (Y page 93).
R reset the function for folding the exterior
mirrors in/out automatically, by folding
the mirrors out once (Y page 100). Charging the battery

During charging and jump-starting, explosive
gases can escape from the battery. There is a
risk of an explosion.
Particularly avoid fire, naked flames, creating
sparks and smoking. Ensure there is sufficient
ventilation while charging and jump-starting.
Do not lean over a battery. G

Battery acid is caustic. There is a risk of injury.
Avoid contact with the skin, eyes or clothing.
Do not inhale any battery gases. Do not lean
over the battery. Keep children away from
batteries. Wash battery acid immediately with
