You can also switch the automatic locking
function on and off using the on-board com-
puter ( Y
page 285).
Power closingPower closing pulls the doors and trunk lid
into their locks automatically even if they are
only partly closed. X
To power close a door: push the door into
the lock up to the first detent position.
Power closing will pull the door fully closed. X
To power close the tailgate: lightly press
the tailgate downwards.
Power closing will pull the tailgate fully
closed.
Unlocking the driver's door (mechan-
ical key)
If the vehicle can no longer be locked or
unlocked with the SmartKey or KEYLESS-GO,
use the mechanical key.
If you use the mechanical key to unlock and
open the driver's door, the anti-theft alarm
system will be triggered ( Y
page 78).X
Take the mechanical key out of the Smart-
Key ( Y
page 85).X
Insert the mechanical key into the lock of
the driver's door as far as it will go. X
Turn the mechanical key counter-clockwise
to position G .
The door is unlocked. X
Turn the mechanical key back and remove
it. X
Insert the mechanical key into the Smart-
Key.
Locking the vehicle (mechanical key) If the vehicle can no longer be locked with the
SmartKey, use the mechanical key. X
Open the driver's door. X
Close the front-passenger door, the rear
doors and the tailgate. X
Press the locking button ( Y
page 91).X
Check whether the locking knobs on the
front-passenger door and the rear doors
are still visible. Press down the locking
knobs by hand, if necessary. X
Close the driver's door. X
Take the mechanical key out of the Smart-
Key ( Y
page 85). X
Insert the mechanical key into the lock of
the driver's door as far as it will go.92
Doors
Opening and closing

If the transmission is in position R , the trunk
lid must be closed.
If your seat belt is not fastened, the following
conditions must be fulfilled to automatically
release the electric parking brake: R
the driver's door is closed. R
you have shifted out of transmission posi-
tion P or you have previously driven faster
than 2 mph (3 km/h).
i Ensure that you do not depress the accel-
erator pedal unintentionally. Otherwise the
parking brake will be released and the vehi-
cle will start to move.
Emergency braking
The vehicle can also be braked during an
emergency by using the electric parking
brake. X
While driving, push handle C of the electric
parking brake.
The vehicle is braked for as long as the
handle of the electric parking brake is
pressed. The longer the electric parking
brake handle is depressed, the greater the
braking force.
During braking: R
a warning tone sounds R
the Release Park. Brake message
appears R
the red I (USA only) or $ (Canada
only) indicator lamp in the instrument clus-
ter flashes When the vehicle has been braked to a stand-
still, the electric parking brake is engaged.
Parking the vehicle for a long period If you leave the vehicle parked for longer than
four weeks, the battery may be damaged by
exhaustive discharging.
If you leave the vehicle parked for longer than
six weeks, the vehicle may suffer damage as a
result of lack of use. X
Visit a qualified specialist workshop and
seek advice.

General notes
Important safety notes
G WARNING
If you switch off the ignition while driving,
safety-relevant functions are only available
with limitations, or not at all. This could affect,
for example, the power steering and the brake
boosting effect. You will require considerably
more effort to steer and brake. There is a risk
of an accident.
Do not switch off the ignition while driving.
G WARNING
If you operate mobile communication equip-
ment while driving, you will be distracted from
traffic conditions. You could also lose control
of the vehicle. There is a risk of an accident.
Only operate this equipment when the vehicle
is stationary.
Observe the legal requirements for the coun-
try in which you are driving. Some jurisdic-
tions prohibit the driver from using a mobile
phone while driving a vehicle.192

i On the rear fenders, it is recommended to
position the antenna on the side of the
vehicle closest to the center of the road.
Use the Technical Specification ISO/TS
21609 when retrofitting RF transmitters
(Road Vehicles - EMC guidelines for installa-
tion of aftermarket radio frequency transmit-
ting equipment). Observe the legal require-
ments for retrofittings.
If your vehicle has installations for two-way
radio equipment, use the power supply or
antenna connections intended for use with
the basic wiring. Be sure to observe the man-
ufacturer's additional instructions when
installing.
Deviations with respect to wavebands, maxi-
mum transmission outputs or antenna posi-
tions must be approved by Mercedes-Benz.
The maximum transmission output (PEAK) at
the base of the antenna must not exceed the
following values:

There is no restriction for antenna positions
on the outside of the vehicle for the following
