In order to maintain the appropriate distance
to the vehicle in front and thus prevent a
crash, you must apply the brakes yourself. G
Risk of accident
Pay particular attention to the traffic condi-
tions if the distance warning lamp ·in the
instrument cluster lights up or an intermittent
warning tone sounds.
If necessary, brake or manoeuvre to avoid an
obstacle.
X To activate/deactivate: activate or deac-
tivate the distance warning function in the
on-board computer (Y page 109).
After activation, the Äsymbol is dis-
played in the lower multi-function display.

(Y page 119). Anti-theft systems
Immobiliser
The immobiliser prevents your vehicle from
being started without the correct key.
Activating the immobiliser X
With the key: remove the key from the
ignition lock.
X With KEYLESS GO*: press the start/stop
button on the dashboard.
The engine switches off.
Deactivating the immobiliser X
With the key: turn the key to position 2in
the ignition lock.
X With KEYLESS GO*: press the start/stop
button on the dashboard twice without
depressing the brake.
i The immobiliser is always deactivated
when you start the engine. ATA* (anti-theft alarm system)
A visual and audible alarm is triggered when
the alarm system is primed and you open:
R a door
R a door using the emergency key element
R the tailgate
R the bonnet
The alarm is not switched off even if you close
an open door again. X
To prime: lock the vehicle using the key.
On vehicles with KEYLESS GO*, the locking
button on the door handle can also be used.
Indicator lamp :flashes. The alarm sys-
tem is primed after approximately 10 sec-
onds.
X To deactivate: unlock the vehicle using the
key. On vehicles with KEYLESS GO*, you
can also unlock the vehicle by grasping the
door handle.
Deactivating the alarm X
With the key: insert the key into the igni-
tion lock.
The alarm is deactivated.

X Press the %or& button on the key.

With KEYLESS GO*: grasp the door han-
dle. The key must be outside the vehicle.
The alarm is deactivated.
or
X Press the Start/Stop button on the dash-
board. The key must be inside the vehicle.
The alarm is deactivated. Tow-away protection*
An audible and visual alarm is triggered if the
vehicle's angle of inclination is altered while
tow-away protection is primed. For example,
this occurs if the vehicle is jacked up on one
side.
Priming tow-away protection X
Make sure that all the doors and the tail-
gate are closed.
X Lock the vehicle with the key or, on vehicles
with KEYLESS GO*, with the locking button
on the door handle.
Tow-away protection is primed after
approximately 30 seconds.
Deactivating tow-away protection When you unlock your vehicle using the key
or KEYLESS GO*, tow-away protection is
automatically deactivated.
Deactivate tow-away protection manually to
prevent a false alarm if your vehicle:
R is being transported
R is being loaded, e.g. onto a ferry or car
transporter
R is parked on a movable surface, e.g. split-
level garages
It is possible to switch off tow-away protec-
tion on the on-board computer for the next
time the vehicle is locked (Y page 109). Tow-
away protection remains deactivated until
you unlock and lock the vehicle again.
If you select Tow-away protection in the
"Display with ignition switched off" function contained in the
Vehiclesubmenu,
(Y page 107) the following message appears
in the multi-function display after switching
off the ignition: X
Press X.
The Tow-away protection off message
appears in the multi-function display.
i If you press W, tow-away protection
will remain primed.
X Lock the vehicle with the key or, on vehicles
with KEYLESS GO*, also using the locking
button on the door handle.
Tow-away protection remains deactivated
until:
R the vehicle is unlocked again.
R a door is opened and closed again.
R the vehicle is locked again. Interior motion sensor*
If the interior motion sensor is primed, a vis-
ual and audible alarm is triggered when move-
ment is detected in the vehicle interior while
the vehicle is locked. This occurs, for exam-
ple, if someone breaks the side windows of
your vehicle or reaches into the vehicle's inte-
rior.
Priming the interior motion sensor X
Make sure that:
R
the side windows are closed
R the hinged side windows* are closed Anti-theft systems

To open: pull remote operating switch :
until the tailgate opens.
X To close: turn the key to position 1or 2in
the ignition lock.
X Press remote operating switch for tail-
gate :until the tailgate is closed. Limiting the tailgate opening angle*
You can limit the opening angle of the tailgate
in the top half of its opening range. This could
be useful, for example, when there is insuffi-
cient space above the tailgate.
! Make sure there is sufficient clearance to
open the tailgate fully when setting the
opening angle. The tailgate could otherwise
be damaged. Ideally, limit the opening
angle outside.
Activating X
To open the tailgate: pull the handle on
the tailgate.
X To stop the opening procedure at the
desired position: press the closing button
(Y page 62) in the tailgate or pull the handle
on the outside of the tailgate again.
X Press and hold the closing button in the
tailgate until you hear a short tone.
The opening angle limiter is activated. The
tailgate will now stop in the stored position
when opening. Deactivating X
Press and hold the closing button
(Y page 62) in the tailgate until you hear

The ignition is not switched on. The engine

If you press the Start/Stop button repeatedly
without depressing the brake pedal, its func-
tion corresponds to the different key posi-
tions in the ignition lock.
If you depress the brake pedal and press the
Start/Stop button, the engine starts immedi-

Position 0: if Start/Stop button :has not
yet been pressed, this corresponds to "key
removed".
X Position 1: press Start/Stop button :
once.
It is now possible to switch on the wind-
screen wipers, for example.
i If you press Start/Stop button :in this
position twice, the power supply is discon-
nected again.
X Position 2(ignition): press Start/Stop but-
ton :twice.
i If you press Start/Stop button :in this
position, the power supply is disconnected
again.
Removing the Start/Stop button You can remove the Start/Stop button from
the ignition lock and start the vehicle with a
key as usual.
i You do not need to remove the Start/
Stop button from the ignition lock when you
leave the vehicle.
i Switching between KEYLESS GO mode
and key mode is only possible when the
transmission is in position P. X
Remove Start/Stop button :from ignition
lock ;.
i If you switch from key mode to KEYLESS
GO mode, the system requires a two-sec-
ond recognition period before you can use
the Start/Stop button. Seats

Risk of injury
The seats can still be adjusted when there is
no key in the ignition lock. For this reason,
children should never be left unsupervised in
the vehicle. They could become trapped when
adjusting a seat. G
Risk of accident
Only adjust the driver's seat when the vehicle
is stationary. You will otherwise be distracted
from the road and traffic conditions and you
could lose control of the vehicle as a result of
the seat moving. This could cause an acci-
dent. G
Risk of injury
Make sure that nobody can become trapped
when you adjust the seat.
Observe the notes concerning the airbag sys-

X Pull the light switch out to the second stop.
The R yellow indicator lamp on the light
switch lights up.
X To switch off: press the light switch in as
far as it will go.
The R yellow indicator lamp on the light
switch goes out.
On vehicles without foglamps
X Turn the key to position 2in the ignition
lock.
X To switch on: turn the light switch to
L. When the light switch is set to
à you cannot switch on the rear fog-
lamp.
X Pull the light switch out to the stop.
The R yellow indicator lamp on the light
switch lights up.
X To switch off: press the light switch in as
far as it will go.
The R yellow indicator lamp on the light
switch goes out. Main-beam headlamps X
Turn the ignition key to position 2in the
ignition lock or start the engine.
X Turn the light switch to Lorà 16
.
X To activate: press the combination switch
in the direction of arrow Epast the point
of resistance (Y page 80).
The K indicator lamp in the instrument
cluster lights up.
X To deactivate: move the combination
switch back to its normal position.
The K indicator lamp in the instrument
cluster goes out.
Turn signal lamp X
To indicate a minor change of direc-
tion: push the combination switch in the
direction of arrow ForH (Ypage 80).
The corresponding turn signal flashes three
times.
X To indicate: push the combination switch
in the direction of arrow ForH past the
point of resistance (Y page 80).
The corresponding turn signal indicator
lamp ! or# in the instrument clus-
ter flashes.
Hazard warning lamps 16

The switches for all side windows are located
on the driver's door. There is also a switch on
each door for the corresponding side window.
X Turn the key to position 2in the ignition
lock.
i You can continue to operate the side win-
dows when you switch off the engine. This
function remains active for five minutes or
until one of the front doors is opened.
X To open: press the corresponding switch.
X To close: pull the corresponding switch.
i If you press the switch beyond the point
of resistance, an automatic opening/clos-
ing process is started in the corresponding
direction. You can stop automatic opera-
tion by pressing again.
Closing with increased force and with-
out the anti-entrapment feature G
Risk of injury
Closing the side windows with increased force
or without the anti-entrapment feature could lead to serious or even fatal injury. Make sure
that nobody can become trapped when clos-
ing the side windows.
If a side window blocks during closing and
reopens slightly:
X Immediately after the window blocks, pull
on the corresponding switch again until the
side window has closed.
The side window is closed with increased
force.
If a side window blocks again during closing
and reopens slightly:
X Immediately after the window blocks, pull
on the corresponding switch again until the
side window has closed.
The side window is closed without the anti-
entrapment feature. Resetting the windows
You must reset each side window if:
R the battery has been disconnected or has
become discharged.
R the side window no longer opens or closes
fully.
R the side windows open again slightly after
being closed fully.
X Turn the key to position 2in the ignition
lock.
X Pull the corresponding switch until the side
window is closed.
X Hold the switch for an additional second.
If the side window opens again slightly:
X Pull the corresponding switch again imme-
diately and hold it for approx. one second. Opening and closing the hinged side
windows*
You can operate the hinged side windows

Starting the engine using the key i
You can also use the "touch-start" func-
tion. To do this, turn the key to position 3
and release it immediately. The engine then
starts automatically.
X To start a petrol engine: turn the key to
position 3in the ignition lock (Y page 63)
and release it.
The engine starts automatically.
X To start a diesel engine: turn the key to
position 2in the ignition lock (Y page 63).
The % preglow indicator lamp in the
instrument cluster lights up.
X When the %preglow indicator lamp
goes out, turn the key to position 3
(Y page 63) and release it as soon as the
engine is running.
i You can start the engine without preglow
if the engine is warm. Starting the engine using KEYLESS
GO* G
Risk of injury
Your vehicle can be started using a valid KEY-
LESS GO* key. For this reason, children
should never be left unsupervised in the vehi-
cle. Always take the key with you when leaving
the vehicle, even if you are only leaving it for
a short time.
i The Start/Stop button can be used to
start the vehicle without inserting the key
in the ignition lock. X
Depress the brake pedal and keep it
depressed.
X Petrol engine: press Start/Stop but-
ton :once.
The engine starts.
X Diesel engine: press Start/Stop but-
ton :once.
Preglow is activated and the engine starts. Pulling away
! Warm up the engine quickly. Do not use
the engine's full performance until it has
reached operating temperature.
Only shift into reverse gear when the vehi-
cle is stationary.
Where possible, avoid spinning the drive
wheels when pulling away on slippery
roads. Otherwise, you could damage the
drive train. Driving and parking

To apply: depress parking brake ;firmly.

cluster lights up if the engine is running.
X To release: depress the brake pedal and
keep it depressed.
The parking lock is released.
X Pull release handle :.

Risk of accident
If the engine is not running, there is no power
assistance for the steering and brakes. Steer-
ing and braking will then require significantly
greater effort.
As a result, you might lose control of the vehi-
cle, cause an accident and injure yourself and
others.
Therefore, do not switch off the engine while
you are driving.
X Move the transmission to position P.
Using the key
X Turn the key to position 0(Y page 63) in
the ignition lock and remove it.
The immobiliser is activated. i
If you switch the engine off with the trans-
mission in position Ror D, the automatic
transmission automatically shifts to N.
If you then open the driver's door or the
front-passenger door or remove the key
from the ignition, the automatic transmis-
sion shifts to P.
If you shift the automatic transmission to
N before switching off the engine, the auto-
matic transmission remains in Neven when
a door is opened.
Using KEYLESS GO*
X Press the Start/Stop button (Y page 63).
The engine stops and all the indicator
lamps in the instrument cluster go out
(Y page 25).
i If you use the Start/Stop button to switch
off the engine, the automatic transmission
automatically shifts to N. If you open the
driver's or front-passenger door, the auto-
matic transmission shifts to P.
i The engine can be turned off while the
vehicle is in motion by pressing and holding
the Start/Stop button for three seconds. Transmission
Notes on the transmission

Risk of accident
The movement of the pedals must not be
impaired in any way. Do not keep any objects
in the driver's footwell. Make sure that floor-
mats or carpets are correctly secured and
that there is sufficient clearance for the ped-
als.
Do not place several floormats on top of one
another. G
Risk of accident
Do not change down for additional engine
braking on a slippery road surface. This could
cause the drive wheels to lose their grip and
the vehicle could skid. This could cause you Transmission
