tionally turnedinthe ignition lock.This
could cause theengine tobe switched off.

Do not attach anyheavy orlarge object sto
the SmartK ey.Remove anybulky keyrings
before insertin gthe SmartK eyinto theigni-
tion lock.
! Keep
theSmartK eyaway fromstrongmag-
netic fields. Otherwise, theremote control
funct ioncould beaffected.

If you donot open thevehicle withinapprox-

The SmartK eycent rally locks/un locks:
R the doors
R the tailgate
R the fuel filler flap
The turn signals flashonce when unlocking
and three times whenlocking.
When thelocator lighting isactivated viathe
multimedia system,itlights upwhen itis dark
after thevehicle isunlocked withtheremote
cont rol;see Digital Operator's Manual.
You canalso setanaudib lesignal toconfirm
that thevehicle hasbeen locked. Theaudib le
signal canbeactivated anddeactivated using
the on-board computer (Ypage 200).

start theengine usingtheSmartKey instead
of the Start/St opbutton, pullthe Start/St op
button outofthe ignition lock.
X Turn theSmartKey topositio n0049 inthe igni-
tion lock (Ypage 125)andrelea seitas
soon asthe engine isrunning.
Start ingprocedure withtheStart /
Stop button The
Start/St opbutton canbeused tostart the
vehicle manuallywithou tinserting theSmart-
Key into theignition lock.TheStart/St opbut- ton
must beinserted inthe ignition lockand
the SmartKey mustbeinthe vehicle .This
mode forstarting theengine operatesinde-
pendently ofthe ECO start/stop automatic
engine startfunction.
You canstart theengine ifavali dSmartKey is
in the vehicle .Switch offthe engine and
alw ays take theSmartKey withyouwhen leav-
ing the vehicle ,even ifyou only leaveitfor a
short time.Payattention tothe important
safety notes.
X Depress thebrake pedaland keep it
depres sed.
X Press theStart/St opbutton once
(Y page 125).

You canalso start yourengine viayou rsmart-
phone fromoutsid ethe vehicle .In this case,
the previou slyselected climatecontrolsetting
is activated. Inthis way youcan cool orheat
the interior ofthe vehicle beforestarting the
journey.
Only start theengine viayou rsmartphone ifit
is safe tostart andruntheengine whereyour
vehicle isparked.
Observe thelega lstipul ations inthe area
where yourvehicle isparked. Enginestartvia
smartphone maybelimi ted tocertain coun-
tries orregions.
You canexecute amaximum oftwo consecu-
tive starting attempts viayou rsmartphone. If
you insert theSmartKey intotheignition lock,
you can carry outtwo more starting attempts.
Once youhave started theengine, youcan
switch theengine offvia you rsmartphone at
any time.
You canonly start theengine viayou rsmart-
phone if:
R the SmartKey isin the ignition lock
R park positio n005D isselected
R the accelera torpeda lis not depres sed
R the alarm for the anti-theft alarm system is
not set
R the panic alarm isnot activated

current gearisreached. Whentheengine
limiting speedisreached, thefuel supply is
cut toprevent theengine fromoverrevving.
Always makesurethattheengine speed
does notreach thered area ofthe tachome-
ter. There isotherwise arisk ofengine dam-
age. X
To shift up:pull steering wheelpaddle
shifter 0044.
The automatic transmissionshiftsuptothe
next gear. All
vehicles (exceptMercedes-AMG vehi-
cles) :if the maximum enginespeedonthe
current lyengaged gearisreached andyou
cont inue toaccelerate, theautomatic trans-
mission automatically shiftsupinorder to
prevent enginedamage.
X To shift down: pullsteering wheelpaddle
shifter 0043.
The automatic transmissionshiftsdownto
the next gear.
Automatic downshifting occurswhencoast-
ing.
If the engine exceeds themaximum engine
speed whenshifting down,theautomatic
transm issionprotect sagainst enginedam-
age bynot shifting down.

In
manual mode,theautomatic transmis-
sion does notshift upautomatically even
when theengine limiting speedforthe cur-
rent gear isreached. Whentheengine limit-
