There is a risk of injury, particularly in the
event of sudden braking or abrupt changes in
direction.Always store objects such that they can-
not be thrown around in such situations.Always make sure that objects do not
protrude from storage spaces, parcel
nets or storage nets.Close the lockable storage spaces before
starting a journey.Stow and secure objects that are heavy,
hard, pointed, sharp-edged, fragile or too
large in the cargo compartment.&WARNING Risk of accident from objects in
the driver\bs footwell and front-passenger
footwell
Objects in the driver\bs footwell and front-
passenger footwell may impede pedal travel or
block a depressed pedal.
This jeopardizes the operating and road safety
of the vehicle.
Stow all objects in the vehicle securely so that they cannot get into the driver\bs
footwell or front-passenger footwell.Always install the Ooor mats securely
and as prescribed in order to ensure that
there is always suPcient clearance for
the pedals.Do not use loose Ooor mats and do not
lay multiple Ooor mats on top of one
another.
Vehicles with automatic front-passenger air bag
shutoM: objects trapped under the front-
passenger seat may interfere with the function of
the automatic front-passenger air bag shutoM or
damage the system. Please observe the notes on the function of the automatic front -passenger airbag shutoM ( page 43).
&WARNING !

*NOTE Damage to the rear armrest due to
body weight
When folded out, the rear armrest can be
damaged by body weight.
Do not sit or support yourself on the rear
seat armrest.&WARNING Risk of injury due to an open
cargo compartment Ooor
If you drive with the cargo compartment Ooor
open, objects could be Oung around and hit
vehicle occupants as a result. There is a risk
of injury, particularly in the event of sudden
braking or a sudden change in direction.
Always close the cargo compartment Ooor before a journey.&WARNING Risk of Nre and injury from hot
cigarette lighter
You can suMer burns if you touch the hot heat-
ing element or the hot socket of the cigarette
lighter.
In addition, Oammable materials can catch Nre
if:
= you drop the hot cigarette lighter.
= children e.g. hold the hot cigarette lighter
to objects.Always hold the cigarette lighter by the knob.Always make sure that the cigarette
lighter is out of the reach of children.Never leave children unattended in the vehicle.&WARNING Risk of burns from the tailpipe
and tailpipe trims
The exhaust tailpipe and tailpipe trims can
become very hot. If you come into contact
with these parts of the vehicle, you could burn
yourself.
Always be particularly careful around the tailpipe and the tailpipe trims and super-
vise children especially closely in this
area.Allow vehicle parts to cool down before
touching them.\bLeather is a natural product. It exhibits natural
surface properties such as diMerences in
structure, marks caused by growth and injury or subtle color diMerences. These surface
properties are characteristics of leather and not material faults. Leather is also subject toa natural aging process during which the sur-
face properties change.
The handling characteristics of your vehicle are
dependent on the distribution of the load within the vehicle. You should bear the following in mind
when loading the vehicle:
= Do not exceed the permissible total mass or
the gross axle weight rating of the vehicle
(including load and occupants). The values are
speciNed on the vehicle identiNcation plate on
the vehicle\bs B-pillar.
= The load must not protrude above the upper
edge of the seat backrests.
= Always use the partition net when transporting
objects in the cargo compartment.

=Always place the load behind unoccupied
seats if possible.
= Secure the load using the cargo tie-down rings
and distribute the load evenly.
Notes on driving with a roof load
= Distribute the roof load and the load inside the
vehicle evenly, placing heavy objects at the
bottom. Also comply with the notes on loading
the vehicle.
= Drive attentively, and avoid abrupt starts, brak-
ing and steering as well as rapid cornering.
= When transporting roof loads and when the
vehicle is fully loaded or fully occupied, select
drive programs  and A . These are

q Folding the rear seat backrest forwards
&WARNING Risk of becoming trapped when
adjusting the seats
When you adjust a seat, you may trap yourself
or a vehicle occupant.
When adjusting a seat, make sure that no one has any body parts in the sweep
of the seat.&WARNING Risk of accident if the rear
bench seat, rear seat and seat backrest
are not engaged
The rear bench seat, rear seat and seat back-
rest may fold forwards, even when you are
driving.
= As a result, the vehicle occupant will be
pushed into the seat belt with increased
force. The seat belt will not be able to pro-

tect as intended and could cause addi-
tional injury.
= Objects or loads in the trunk or cargo
compartment will not be restrained by the seat backrest.Make sure that the rear bench seat, therear seat and the seat backrest are engaged before every trip.If the seat backrests are not engaged and locked
in place, the lock veriNcation indicator will be red.
Always ensure that all vehicle occupants have
their seat belts fastened correctly and are sitting
properly. Particular attention must be paid to chil- dren.
If you no longer require the folded-down seat
backrest as a loading area, fold the backrest back into place.
Requirements: = The area into which the seat backrest is folded
is clear.
= To fold the center seat backrest forwards: the
center seat backrest has been unlocked.
= The armrest on the second row of seats is fol-
ded back and the cup holders are empty.
Folding the les and right seat backrests forwards
You can fold the center and outer seat backrests
forwards.If necessary, fully insert the seat backrest
head restraints (  page 101).Pull release lever 1.Folding the center seat backrest forwardsPull release catch 3 for seat backrest 2 for-

qFolding the rear seat backrest back&WARNING Risk of becoming trapped when
adjusting the seats
When you adjust a seat, you may trap yourself
or a vehicle occupant.
When adjusting a seat, make sure that no one has any body parts in the sweep

seat belt when folding back the seat back-
rest
The seat belt could become trapped and thus
damaged when the seat backrest is folded
back.
Make sure that the seat belt is not trap-
ped when folding back the seat backrest.Move the driver\bs or front passenger seat for-
wards, if necessary.Fold the corresponding seat backrest 1 back
until it engages.
Vehicles without a movable rear bench seat: if a
rear seat backrest is not engaged and locked in place, red lock veriNcation indicator 2 or 3 will
be visible.
Vehicles with a movable rear bench seat: if the
center rear seat backrest is not engaged and locked in place, red lock veriNcation indicator 3
will be visible. The outer seat backrests lock auto-
matically when they are not in the folded down
position.

q Locking the release catch of the center rear
seat backrest
Requirements: = The les and center seat backrests are
engaged and joined together.
You can lock the center seat backrest. The center
seat backrest can then be folded forwards only
together with the les seat backrest.Seats and stowing113

Fold the center and les seat backrests for-
wards.To lock or unlock: slide catch 1 upwards or
downwards.
q Adjusting the angle of the rear seat backrests&WARNING Risk of an accident from the
rear bench seat and seat backrest not
being engaged
The rear bench seat and seat backrest can
fold forwards, even when the vehicle is in
motion.
= As a result, vehicle occupants will be
pressed more strongly against the seat
belt. The seat belt cannot protect as inten- ded and could cause additional injury.
= Objects or cargo in the trunk/cargo com-
partment cannot be restrained by the seat
backrest.
Before starting every journey, ensure
that the rear bench seat and seat backr-
ests are engaged.
For vehicles with longitudinally adjustable rear
seats, you can also adjust the angle of the rear
seat backrests. There are several possible detent
positions.
*NOTE Damage to the release loops due to
the attachment of objects
The release loops of the seat backrests in the
rear passenger compartment may be dam-
aged due to the attachment of objects.
Only attach objects to the tie-down eyes.114Seats and stowing

Pull right or les release loop 2 forwards in
the direction of the arrow.
Corresponding seat backrest 1 will be
unlocked.Move seat backrest 1 to the desired angle.Let go of the release loop 2.Ensure that the seat backrest is engaged.
Vehicles without a movable rear bench seat: if a
rear seat backrest is not engaged and locked in place, the red lock veriNcation indicator will be
visible.
Vehicles with a movable rear bench seat: if the
center rear seat backrest is not engaged and locked in place, the red lock veriNcation indicator
will be visible. The outer seat backrests lock auto-
matically when they are not in the folded down
position.
Cargo compartment cover

q Installing and removing the cargo compartment
cover
&WARNING Risk of injury or death due to
poorly secured objects
The cargo compartment cover alone cannot
secure or restrain heavy objects, items of lug-
gage or heavy loads.
You could be hit by an unsecured load, partic- ularly in the event of abrupt changes in direc-
tion, sudden braking or an accident.
Always stow objects in such a way that
they cannot be thrown around.Secure objects, luggage or loads against
slipping or tipping over, e.g. by using tie
downs, even if you are using the cargo
compartment cover.
Requirements
= Do not load the cargo compartment cover
with more than 5.5 lb (2.5 kg).
Removing\bPlease note that the cargo compartment
cover must not be pushed further upwards when the tailgate is open.Pull hanger 3 on the tailgate upwards out of
eyelet 1 and unhook it.Swivel the cargo compartment cover down-
wards and pull it evenly out of the guide railsSeats and stowing115

Installing
Place the load compartment cover onto the
guide rails on the les and right.Slide the cargo compartment cover forwards
evenly in the guide rails on the right and les
with both hands until it engages.Swivel the cargo compartment cover upwards and hook hanger 3 through eyelet 2.Pull hanger 3 downwards into eyelet 1 until
it engages.\bPlease ensure that the cargo compartment
cover is lying Oat on the guide rails on the
right and les when the tailgate is closed.
Overview of the tie-down eyes
Observe the notes on loading the vehicle

The bag hooks cannot restrain heavy objects
or items of luggage.
Objects or items of luggage may be Oung
around and hit vehicle occupants.
Only hang light objects on the bag hooks.Never hang hard, sharp-edged or fragile
objects on the bag hooks.
Observe the notes on loading the vehicle
(  page 108).
Subject the bag hooks to a maximum load of 6.6 lbs (3 kg) and do not attach any goods to them.

The clothes hooks are not suitable for hanging
heavy objects as this can cause the tailgate tolower automatically. Use the clothes hooks only
for light objects such as jackets.
Attaching the parcel net&WARNING Risk of injury due to objects
being stowed incorrectly
If objects in the vehicle interior are stowed
incorrectly, they can slide or be thrown around
and hit vehicle occupants. In addition, cup
holders, open storage spaces and mobile
phone receptacles cannot always retain all
objects within.
There is a risk of injury, particularly in the
event of sudden braking or abrupt changes in
direction.
