General notes
Hybrid technolog ycombine s afuelefficien t
internal combustion engin ewit h a powerful
electric motor. In HYBRIDmode, thehybrid
drive syste mautomatically selects th emost effi-
cien toperatin gmode fo revery drivin gsituation .
Drive th evehicle in th eusual manner.
To sav efue lin HYBRID mode, thehybrid drive
syste mswitches of fth ecombustion engin eas
ofte nas possible durin gth ejourney when powe r
output requirements are low. Whe npowe rout -
put requirements are low, th eelectric moto r
powers th evehicle. The engin eis switched on ,
eve nwhil eth evehicle is in motion ,when a
higher powe routput is required. The engin eis
usually switched of fwhen th evehicle is station -
ary. Consequently, there is usually no engin e
idlin gas wit hcombustion engin evehicles .
Fo rpulling away and accelerating, th eelectric
moto rsupports th einternal combustion engin e
usin gth epowe rstored in th ehigh-voltage bat -
tery. In addition ,th epowe ris used fo relectric
driving, operation of th eelectric refrigerant
compressor and to supply th e12 Von-boar d
electrical system. In this way th ehybrid drive
s
yste mhelps to reduce your vehicle' sfue lcon-
sumption .

Recuperative Brak eSyste m
If you release th eaccelerator peda lwhen th e
vehicle is in motion ,overrun recuperation is ini-
tiated. The electric moto ris operated as agen -
erato rwhen in overrun mode and when you
brake .Hybrid technolog yconvert sth ekineti c
energ yof th evehicle into electricit yand stores
it in th ehigh-voltage battery.

Vehicles wit han electric moto rgenerate muc h
les sdrivin gnoise than vehicles wit hinternal
combustion engines. As aresult ,your vehicle
may no tbe hear dby other road user sin certain
situations.
Dependin gon th evehicle' sequipmen tand
country-specific regulations, th evehicle can be
equipped wit hAcoustic Vehicle Indication .
Acoustic Vehicle Indication generate s acertain
soun dat aspeed between 0and 20 mph
(30 km/h). Thi shelps other road users, par tic-
u
larly pedestrian sand cyclists, to hear your
vehicle better. The soun dcan also be hear d
insid eth evehicle.
The volume depend son th eengin espeed. The
faste ryou accelerate, th elouder th esoun dis. At
a speed of over 20 mph (30 km/h)the sound is
switched off. Above this speed, the natural
sounds from the vehicle are sufficient that it can
be heard in good time by other road users.

Manual gear shifting
Using the steering wheel paddleshifters, you
can temporar ilychange gears yourself. The
transmission must be inposition D. When you
activate manual gearshifting, the combustion
engine isautomatically switched on.
XTo activate: pullthe left or right steering
wheel paddle shifter.

the veh icleOperator's Manual).
ECO start/stop function
General notes
The ECO start/stop function switches the com-
bustion engine off automatically when the veh i-
cle stops moving and at speeds below 80 mph
(13 0km/ h)(
Ypage 24). All vehicle systems remain active, e.g. the auto-
matic climate control.
The ECO start/stop function is neither available
in the
Sport drive program nor during manual
shifting.
Automatic engine switch-off
The engine is switched off automatically, includ-
ing when:
Rthe driver removes his/her foot from the
accelerator in the Comfortdrive program and
a speed of 80 mph (130 km/h) is not excee-
ded (
Ypage 24)
Rthe engine has reached its operating temper- ature
Rthe driver’s seat belt is fastened and the
driver’s door is closed
Rthe driver only slightly depresses the accel-
erator pedal in order to, for example, maintain
the current speed for a limited distance
Rthe hood is closed and engaged properly
Rthe high-voltage battery is charged suffi-
ciently
Rno malfunctions are present in the hybrid
drive system
The internal combustion engine will not be
switched off automatically, if:
Rthe self-diagnosis function of the engine man-
agement is active
Rthere is a malfunction in the hybrid drive sys-
tem
Rthe climate control of the vehicle requires it
Rthe high-voltage battery is charging
(Ypage 40).
Automatic engine start
The automatically switched-off internal combus-
tion engine starts automatically in certain situa-
tions, if:
Rthe power demand from the driver via the
accelerator pedal is greater than the electric
motor alone can provide
Rthe driver switches to the Sportdrive pro-
gram or to manual gearshifting
Rthe condition of charge of the high-voltage
battery has reached the lower limit
Rthe driver has selected the CHARGE operating
mode
