Activating instrument cluster display
The display for temperature, odometer, oil level
indicator and clock is activated by:
• Opening the driver’s door.
• Pressing button (1) in the instrument cluster (with
key removed or in steering lock position 0).
• Turning the key in steering lock to position 1 or 2. Display illumination
Rotate knob (1) to vary intensity of instrument lamps: • Clockwise - instrument lamp intensity increases.
• Counterclockwise - instrument lamp intensity
decreases.
Odometer/trip odometer
Activate the instrument cluster. • Press knob (1) once to switch to or from odometer to
trip odometer readout.
• Press and hold knob (1) for more than 1 second to
reset trip odometer (with trip odometer displayed).
• Press knob (1) twice to display next scheduled
service.
Clock
Adjusting clock (instrument cluster activated):
Minute: Pull out knob (2) and turn it to the right.
Hour: Pull out knob (2) and turn it to the left.

Therefore, we strongly recommend that you have the
battery charge checked frequently, and corrected if
necessary, especially if you use the vehicle less than
approximately 200 miles (300 km) per month,
mostly for short distance trips, or if it is not used for
long periods of time.
Only charge a battery with a battery charger after the
battery has been disconnected from the vehicle’s
electrical circuit.
Always disconnect the battery negative lead first and
connect last.
When removing and connecting the battery, always
make sure that all electrical consumers are off and the
key is in steering lock position 0. The battery must
always be securely installed when the vehicle is in
operation. During removal and installation always
protect the disconnected battery positive (+) terminal
with the cover attached to the battery.
While the engine is running the battery terminal clamps
must not be loosened or detached, otherwise the
generator and other electronic components would be
damaged. Note:
After reconnecting the battery also set the clock in
instrument cluster (see page 80), set date in trip
computer (see page 83), resynchronize the sliding / pop-
up roof (see page 272), the Skyview Top (see page 273)
and the electronic stability program (ESP) (see
page 206).
Battery recycling
Batteries contain material that can harm the
environment with improper disposal.
Large 12 Volt storage batteries contain lead.
Recycling of batteries is the preferred method of
disposal.
Many states require sellers of batteries to accept old
batteries for recycling.

Pull off electrical connector (2).
Squeeze tabs (3) together and remove bulb holder.
Push bulb into socket, turn counterclockwise and
remove.
Insert new bulb in socket, push in and twist clockwise.
Reinstall bulb holder.
Reinstall electrical connector (2).
Reinstall taillamp. Turn signal lamp, side
(168 [3 cp bulb])
Carefully slide lamp slightly towards rear (arrow), lift
away its front end first, then remove lamp from panel.
Twist bulb socket counterclockwise and pull out. Pull
bulb out of socket.
Insert new bulb in socket. Reinstall bulb socket.
To reinstall lamp, set rear end of lamp into panel and let
front end snap into place.

Emergency operation of sliding/pop-up roof
The sliding / pop-up roof can be opened or closed
manually should an electrical malfunction occur.
The sliding / pop-up roof drive is located behind the
cover between the front interior lamps.
1. Open cover by using a f lat blade screw driver at top edge.
2. Obtain crank (supplied with vehicle) and insert in hexagon drive hole, located at rear end of the open
cover. Note:
Push crank upward while turning it, to disengage the
electric motor.
To slide the roof closed or to raise the roof at the rear:
turn crank clockwise.
To slide the roof open or to lower the roof at the rear:
turn crank counterclockwise.
Important!
After manually operating the sliding / pop-up roof, a
timing synchronization is needed for future electrical
operation of the roof. To do so, remove fuse for sliding/
pop-up roof operation, located in fuse box, for one
second and reinstall. Now push and hold switch until
the sliding / pop-up roof is fully raised. Continue to hold
switch for another second.

DESCRIPTION & OPERATION
All models are equipped with Supplemental Restraint System (SRS). The main components of SRS are driver-
side air bag module, passenger-side air bag module, side impact air bag modules (located in doors), SRS control
module, side air bag sensors, SRS warning light, driver-side knee bolster, passenger-side knee bolster and seat
belt pretensioners or Emergency Tensioning Retractor (ETR) seat belt assembly. Additionally, some vehicles
may be equipped with head impact (curtain type) air bags.
Both SRS and ETR are electronically activated by a single control module. There are 2 thresholds which must
be exceeded to trigger an ETR action, air bag deployment, or both. If a moderately severe frontal collision
occurs exceeding first triggering threshold where protection from seat belt is sufficient, only Emergency
Tensioning Retractor (ETR) is activated if seat belt is buckled. If a moderately severe frontal collision occurs
exceeding first triggering threshold where protection from seat belt is sufficient, but seat belt is not buckled, air
bag is deployed and ETR is not activated.
If a severe frontal collision occurs exceeding second triggering threshold where protection from seat belt is
insufficient, air bag is deployed. ETR is activated if seat belt is buckled. If seat belt is not buckled, ETR is not
activated when second triggering threshold is reached. Passenger air bag will deploy even if passenger seat is
not occupied when a triggering threshold is exceeded. During certain types of collisions, the air bags will be
deploy, but ETRs will not be activated.
The side air bag on the driver-side deploys whenever the driver-side air bag module is deployed and when there
is a substantial side impact crash. The air bag on the passenger-side will activate only when a sensor (Occupied
Seat Recognition Sensor) in the passenger seat sends a signal to the SRS control module that the passenger-side
seat is occupied. Side air bags mounted in rear doors will deploy when side impacts occur that exceed preset
parameters.
Head impact air bag modules will deploy when certain side impacts occur that exceed preset parameters. Head
impact air bag will deploy independently of other air bags on side of impact.

Stop the vehicle.

Make sure the ignition is switched on.
All the lamps in the instrument cluster
light up.

Turn combination switch to
positionM.

Press upper part1 of switch until the
clock, located in the instrument clus-
ter, displays the actual illumination
time.

Press upper part1 of switch again.
Each time the switch is pressed, the
illumination time increases by
15 seconds. You can set the illumina-
tion time between 0 (off) and
60 seconds.
Approximately five seconds after pressing
the switch, the illumination time is set and
the clock is displayed again.Locator lighting

Tachometer
To help protect the engine, the fuel supply
is interrupted if the engine is operated
above its specified limit.
Outside temperature indicator
The outside temperature is displayed in
the instrument cluster (
page 24).
When moving the vehicle into colder ambi-
ent temperatures (e.g. when leaving your
garage), you will notice a delay before the
lower temperature is displayed.
A delay also occurs when ambient temper-
atures rise. This prevents inaccurate tem-
perature indications caused by heat
radiated from the engine during idling or
slow driving.
Setting the clock
Hour
Pull out the right knob2 in the instru-
ment cluster (
page 116) and turn it
counterclockwise.

Pull out the right knob2 in the instru-

The outside temperature indicator is not de-
signed to serve as an ice-warning device and
is therefore unsuitable for that purpose.
Indicated temperatures just above the freez-
ing point do not guarantee that the road sur-
face is free of ice. The road may still be icy,
especially in wooded areas or on bridges.
iTo set the clock by a single hour or a
few minutes, turn knob2 just a few
degrees in the direction indicated for
hours or minutes.
