The mechanism of the ignition lock interlock connects the selector lever of the floor shift with the ETC control
module (N73). See Fig. 163
. It prevents the transmitter key (A8/1) from being withdrawn when the selector
lever is not at position "P".
When the parking lock is not engaged (selector lever position "D", "R", "N"), the locking valve (60) locks the
locking cam (61). The compression spring (62) only pulls the locking valve (60) away from the locking cam
(61) in selector lever position "P". The transmitter key (A8/1) can now be turned to position "0" and removed
from the ignition.

Risk of accident
from vehicle starting off during starting operation (e.g. when testing compression pressure) as a result of gear
engaged or when engine running, or vehicles with automatic transmission as a result of selector lever position
"P" or "N" not engaged (exception: some vehicles do not have a selector lever position "P" ).
Injury hazard
Severe injuries may be caused by unshielded rotating parts in the area of the running engine.
The heat produced by the running engine can result in severe burns if contact is made with individual,
unshielded parts.
Procedural guidelines and safety precautions
As a general rule, carry out work on the running engine only if this is absolutely necessary.
Before starting the engine, apply parking brake .
On models with manual transmission move gearshift lever into Neutral position .
On vehicles with automatic transmission move selector lever into position "P" or "N" (exception:
some vehicles do not have a selector lever position "P" ).
On models which do not have selector lever position "P", secure selector lever to prevent it from
being operated unintentionally .
Wear closed and close-fitting work clothes.
All items of jewelry like chains or rings must be taken off.
Restrain long hair by wearing an appropriate head cover.
Before commencing any work on the running engine, familiarize yourself with the location of potentially
hot parts.
When carrying out work when starting the engine or when engine is running do not touch any hot and
rotating parts .
First aid measures in the event of burns
Do not rub the skin areas affected; flush with plenty of cold water and cover skin with sterile bandages.
Consult a doctor without delay.

Risk of injury when drilling
There is an increased risk of injury to the skin and eyes when drilling gas-filled assemblies due to shavings
being thrown out. The shavings are picked up by the escaping gases and accelerated to a greater or lesser extent
depending on the pressure. The extent of injuries increases as the pressure increases. The pressures involved

The refrigerant compressor driven by the motor compresses the gaseous refrigerant, which is thereby heated up
and routed to the condenser.
The refrigerant's compression heat is then withdrawn on the surface of the condenser. While cooling down, the
refrigerant liquefies.
When the refrigerant flows through the fluid reservoir it is cleansed of any chemical and mechanical impurities.
The water contained in the refrigerant is separated and collected.
The expansion valve sprays the cooled and liquefied refrigerant into the evaporator, which is located in the
fresh-air flow. Here the refrigerant is vaporized. Through this evaporation process heat is extracted from the
fresh air flowing past from outside over the tube and fin system so that air cools down.
The air humidity carried along is converted to condensed water, which escapes into the open. The air dries out.
The refrigerant compressor aspirates the refrigerant which has turned gaseous on account of the heat absorption
and then compresses it yet again.
When the engine is running and the blower switched on, the interior can be supplied with cooled air through the
various air outlets. Cooling intensity is dependent upon the preset in-car temperature and blower setting.

Function
The rotary movement of the belt pulley (1) is transmitted via the refrigerant compressor shaft (13) to the stop
plate (12), which is permanently fastened to the refrigerant compressor shaft (13) by way of a press fit.
The rotation of the stop plate (12) is transmitted to the swash plate (4) by means of a hinged mechanism.
Conversion of the swash plate's (4) rotary motion into the oscillating motion of the seven pistons (6) takes place
via two sliding shoes each (11).
The evaporation tank on the pressure side (5) and evaporation tank on the suction side (7) reduce gas pulsation
in the refrigerant compressor by providing for uniform refrigerant flow. This helps to prevent noise in the
compression process
Volume control
The refrigerant compressor control valve (8) has a corresponding control current applied to it to match the
output requested. This in turn enables the compression volume to be regulated between 2 and 100 %.
The position of the swash plate (4) is determined through monitoring, processing and evaluation of the
following automatic air conditioning controlled variables:

Piezo-electric effect:

A thin quartz plate (c) is coated on two opposing sides with a conductive material (a), (b) (see

illustration). If a tensile or compressive load is applied to the array, an electrical voltage "U" i

produced between the points (d) and (e). The polarity of the generated voltage depends on the

direction of load (compression/tension).

Reversed piezo-electric effect:

If, however, a voltage is applied to the points (d) and (e), the quartz plate increases or decreases


in length.

Task:

Mechanical vibrations can be converted into electrical oscillations using the piezo-electric effect.


For example, for microphones, knock sensors, pressure sensors.

Electrical oscillations can be converted into mechanical vibrations or motion using the reversed

piezo-electric effect: piezo-electric speakers, actuators.

Both effects are combined in the quartz resonator: If an AC voltage whose frequency is roughly

equal to the mechanical resonant frequency (fundamental or harmonic component) of the quartz

plate is applied to the points (d) and (e), the quartz is stimulated to generate resonant vibrations


which stabilize the frequency of the electrical oscillations. For this reason, quartz resonators are


often used where a high degree of frequency stability is required (e.g. in clock generators

(oscillators) for electronic clocks and microprocessors).
